Wondering why Canada is not carrying the Frontier LTE version - Samsung Gear S3

Can anybody explain to me why Canada isn't getting the Frontier LTE version of this watch? Is it because Canada doesn't have e-sim? I was excited about being able to use my data plan for the LTE version until I found out Canada isnt getting the LTE version. Also for people in the US when they have a smartwatch with data capabilities do they need to pay a bit more to use data on their watch?

I'm not going to wait. Canada doesn't even have the gear s2 classic 3G and it has been out for months.

I'm in the US and with Verizon. I have them a call the other day and they said it would only be $5 a month for the service and that it doesn't count as another phone line and I won't need to have a separate plan for it which is nice because I still have unlimited data.

Thanks for providing that information. I don't think its worth it to pay $5 a month to use data on a smart watch. I probably wouldn't even use my data all that much since I almost always would have my phone on me except the times when I wouldn't. But in Canada the phone plans are outrageous so maybe it could have been $10/month.

True, my plan is $140 USD through Verizon so having just $5 more and it will still receive phone calls and texts isn't much of a concern to me.

That's really high. I have no choice but to just use Bluetooth and get calls and texts that way.

Eliminating the $5 and second line charge

Is it possible. I don't really need the second number. While it may be a nice feature to have. I don't really see myself using the watch without the phone being near me. I just want to use the watch in conjuction with my phone.
It would be nice if we could use the watch without the phone, ON THE SAME NUMBER instead. But i'm good with the BT connection.

Dude I was in the same situation. I got mixed feedback from many different verizon employees. This is what I did, you need to buy the device full retail price. Add on the data plan and monthly line fee. If they do not activate it for you do not accept the activation, skip it. It will never show up on your account as long as it is not activated. If you did or they activated it you need to call in and cancel the service. You should not get an early termination fee because you bought the device at full retail. Luckily they did not activate it for me so I will only activate if it is an emergency. It is kind of an indirect safety feature. Now this is solely based on the feedback I got from a Verizon chat rep. I do not know if this will work the same for other providers. I disabled 3g connectivity completely and will never touch that setting again. The only thing is if I restart the phone it asks if I want to activate it, I just skip it every time. I know it does not show up on the account because I verified with Verizon and they said nothing is on their records. The rep also told me that they it should not be required to to use a data plan for the 3g device but the local Verizon store and website say otherwise. I needed to speak to a manager to buy the device because I told the employee that I was going to cancel the plan right after I purchased the device. He said we can't sell you the device if those are your intentions because that hurts us. I said that is not my problem let me speak to a manager. I wanted the 3g device for the speaker for call forwarding, Qualcomm processor, and bigger battery. In the end I got what I wanted. I hope this helps people trying to do the same thing.
The device is already activated. And shows up on my bill as a second number.
I don't care if it hurts verizon. I could have bought the watch for teh same price from bestbuy or whatever and they would have never known i had it.
Except, i got a $50 discount by buying the watch with the phone at the same time through verizon. $5 a month isn't going to kill me, It's just the idea of paying Verizon MORE then what we should be paying as it is. I mean, DANG. i can get sprint for half the cost i'm paying verizon. And have UNLIMITED services. The only reason i have verizon in the first place is because i'm a traveling man. Once i get a local job, I'm back with sprint.
Thanks for the reply.

I hear you man. Best Buy doesn't offer the Verizon Gear S2 3g yet. So you did not pay for the device at full retail? That's where they got you I think. I'm sure you can complain by calling verizon technical support.
The issue here is the eSIM. The 3G version has no SIM card, but instead the equivalent functionality built-in.
Because of this, the 3G version is only offered through carriers at the moment, because the eSIM must be flashed by Samsung or the carrier to bind it to the carrier. There is no consumer means for doing this, hence the 3G watch is not be sold independent from a carrier.
The eSIM, once programmed for a carrier, can not be changed to a different carrier (of course, this isn't TECHNICALLY accurate, it absolutely can, but this is a business model policy). So, again, no generic version.
I doubt there ever will be.
Just wondering why didn't you just buy the non cellular version if you have no interest in using that feature? Would have saved you money, and the headache of worrying if the line ever gets activated

Thats exactly why I got it. Mostly for the call forwarding feature. I got the bluetooth version for christmas and thought it was really dumb that there is no speaker included. So I returned it to get the 3g version. Luckily they did not activate it for me
i didn't know about the 3g differences. And apparently that's the difference. I thought i was just buying a second gen watch. For $250. Compared to bestbuy $300.
From what you guys are saying, apparently there's more to the specs then what i've been finding on the internet. Even bestbuy isn't listing the full specs. I'm guessing they aren't selling the 3g version.
I did my researching before deciding to buy. But apparently i didn't do enough research.
I guess my watch is on the payment plan with the phone. If i want to ditch the second phone number. I'll have to pay full retail to which i was quoted $500. The guy was speaking so fast he was more mumble jumble then plain and clear. So i have no idea on the actual price. I didn't even see the things listed on verizons websight.
I was also on the fence about extra plan for $5 or classic version. Now I actually was in situations when my phone was either in my car or left home and I was able answer phone call on my wrist watch.
Also I believe that esim can be either reprogrammed or reused by provider as long there is not active reactivation lok on the device.

Can't find anywhere what the difference in specs is for the 3g version.

Monthly cost for 4g S2 on AT&T?

Can someone on a mobile share plan please mention what the monthly cost for an S2 connected to your plan is? AT&T's website is incredibly cryptic about this. FAQ says:
What’s the cost to use NumberSync for wearables?
There’s no additional cost beyond that of the wireless rate plans for your wearable device and smartphone. Note that data rates, rather than messaging rates, apply when you use NumberSync to send and receive text messages.
Not sure what that means. Is it free? Is it $10 extra/month? Getting a straight answer seems to be cloaked in ambiguity. Why aren't they just upfront like "putting this cellular capable wearable on your account will cost you an extra $10/month every month."
EDIT: nevermind, I see it now. $10/month. Nah, not worth paying $240 over 2 years to me. I thought with the numbersync feature, it would have been free since it re-uses your existing number (i.e. no need to occupy a new second number). Oh well.
I called At&t about this. The lady told me that with the 15gb mobile share plan that I have now, the watch's line will cost $15 a month. I told her that I'm planning on going to a 2gb a month plan next billing cycle and she said that the price for the watch will go up to $20 a month. That is ridiculous. Plus the 3g watch is over a 1/2" thick. I'll just get the Bluetooth only version.
I have the Gear S2 3G on AT&T, and I had the LG Watch Urbane 2 before that. The watch plan costs $10/month, but after the administrative and government fees, it's $15.18/month. It's very similar in cost to a tablet plan.
Honestly, I don't use the standalone features of the watch very much, so I'm thinking of canceling the plan. I bought the watch off-contract for $299, and I think it is great. However, it is rarely unpaired from my phone via Bluetooth, so the extra 3G plan just seems like a waste. I would probably use the standalone features more often if Samsung allowed the watch to be paired to a tablet. I have a Samsung Tab S2 with voice capability, so it would be nice to dump the phone and just use my tablet and watch all the time.
If you can get out of contract tmobile advertises it for five more dollars a month.

Will Sprint offer the S3 Frontier with LTE?
I am looking for the same answer...
No

So lame. They're the only carrier that didn't have a 3G plan for the S2, also.

The network has to be able to support the same sim in multiple areas I assume.
Looks like I'll get the Tmobile version then
They're apparently planning to offer it with or without the LTE. I just found this:
https://m.sprint.com/shop/mobile/shop/accessory/ao/accessory_details.jsp?accSKU=108000031
It's an S3 band. It's marked as sold out but it's an indication that they plan to sell the S3. We'll have to see whether they'll support LTE.

Too late, I already ordered the S3 on Tmobile
I'm with VZW and went with the S3 on T-Mobile. $20 unlimited everything wearable plan. I would have paid more on VZW since I still have unlimited data and could not share the data. Happy so far. Seamless connection, call forwarding etc. Paying half of what I would have paid with VZW. I'm glad VZW wasn't on board for the launch or I would have missed out on saving a lot of cash.

I was in the Sprint store upgrading to a Galaxy s7 and asked the rep if they were getting the Gear s3. He said yes, and showed me the press release on his terminal. Also, there is a dummy Gear s3 Frontier (no classic model) on display by the Samsung phones. The question he didnt know, is whether it will be the 4g stand alone model. Fingers crossed.

Whoever you spoke to is wrong. That would be correct if you had a regular shared data plan. They won't let you share if you still have UDP. I had an S2 3G and had to pay $35 for the line.

You are correct, I just called. I assumed the first caller would have looked at my account before rattling off a number. The person I talked to now was saying the same until I specifically said I have unlimited data, then they told me $35/Mo for unlimited talk, text, and 2gb of data...
I plan on waiting for a little while ( a couple of months) to ensure these watches are not exploding or smoking on my wrists... Then it's either Sprint offers the Gear S3 or move to Verizon !! What the #ell Sprint !?
Someone on android central said they saw one at a sprint store. The lte version. I havnt had a time to look myself
its annoying that no one is saying either way. Oh.. we have great deals. "do you have the s3? they suggest you call their customer service. i did and the response i got was they had the s3. but not the lte version. i could go buy at&t or verizon and use it on the sprint network.

I'm on Verizon and went to T-Mobile to purchase the watch for myself. Told them it was for a friend as a gift, I still had to make a plan supposedly because they can't sell it outright. Either that or the guy selling it wanted commission for my purchase. The plan just for the watch is $15-20 through T-Mobile alone if you pay full price for it. Verizon wanted $35 because I'm still on unlimited data.

How many versions of this watch is there?

I pre ordered this watch from Best Buy and bought the Frontier version thinking it would come with LTE. I was just looking and Best Buy says the Frontier watch I ordered doesn't have LTE. Are there two versions of the Frontier watch? I have searched the web and most articles say if you get the Frontier model, you get LTE. Who is telling the truth?

They probably just copied the description for both watches. Best Buy can't be relied on for anything.
I believe there are going to be Classic and Frontier BT versions for sale from standard retailers. My understanding is that the LTE versions (at least in the US) are going to have the exclusive on the Frontier with LTE, at least for a while before Best Buy, Amazon and others get to sell it.
The rumor I have heard is that the Frontier will utilize e-sims. Since no Canadian retailer has the ability to support this, we won't be able to get an LTE connected S3.
I just wish Samsung would stop being so secret about how the LTE will work on the watch. They are so disconnected with their customer lately!

Verizon's plans allow you to put multiple devices on a single data plan. For example, I have my wife's iPhone, my S7 Edge, and a JetPack (mifi) under my 10GB plan. Since I rarely use the JetPack now, I'll probably swap it for the LTE Frontier on the plan, so I'll net out $10 a month for the Frontier. I only use the JetPack when I travel for business, so I can switch between it and the Frontier without too much hassle through VZW's customer portal.

I suspect that the Frontier and Frontier LTE watches are the same watch but the LTE version has an extra piece of firmware in order to handle the e-sim functions. It will be interesting if we find you can load the LTE firmware version onto the non-LTE version. That would explain why the two watches are the same price, it doesn't cost them anything extra to make one vs the other.

Actuall in the U.S, for AT&T it doesn't not need an extra plan. But it requires a post-paid plan that lets your smart watch share the data with your phone plan and use numbersync for them to have the same numbers. The only extra thing cost is the the device you add into the plan, a phone costs 20 bucks and a smart watch costs 10 bucks monthly.

So far, it appears as though the LTE version (at least as offered by AT&T) is selling for $50 more than the non-LTE version. Both are now available for pre-order on the Samsung website, but the LTE model is through AT&T.

If you have shared data that makes sense. I have UDP and would have to fork out $40 for the service on the S3. T-Mo has an unlimited wearables plan for $20. I'm going that route. They didn't have any in store but are expecting them today.

So your phone and watch don't have to have the same service provider to work seamlessly? You call still get calls/texts forwarded to the watch automatically, and reply back like it was from your phone?
I have heard AT&T has true number sync (or something...forgot what they call it) so the watch will show the phone's number. But I have A tmobs watch and VZW LG V20 and all is good here as long as you are connected with BT or Remotely

Yep! No issues. That was my concern prior to going with T-Mo but it's seamless. The Gear app syncs the devices. It doesn't care what network you're on.

That is good to hear. It's tempting, but I'm not sure if it's worth $15 a month. I think you or someone else on here is using a friends T-Mobile account which is only $5 a month, which is worth it.

Only worth it if you have UDP with VZW and the S3 would cost you $35 added to your VZW account. I have my own stand alone wearable plan on T-Mo. Not piggy-backing on anyone's account.
I understand Verizon wanting to protect its customers from the frustration and disappointment Samsung is causing among the earliest adopters...
Does anyone remember how long after initial launch it took Verizon to start selling the S2? I'm just trying to get a feel for whether we're likely to be waiting a few days or several more weeks longer.
