I thought of a few ways to upgrade while keeping unlimited data.
There was..
Add a new line, with the GS3, give that phone to the unlimited data, and then put a basic phone on that line so it doesn't require the data fees...
There's buy a used cracked screen on eBay, replace the cracked screen with a replacement on eBay..
Any ideas anyone?
I would suggest against buying any used phone, especially for verizon phones, only because of the risk that if the person selling it has any remaining balance on that account that the phone was tied to, it would be useless for you and by law Verizon will be unable to add it to your phone line. If you can confirm that it in fact has no left over balance, then this is probably the best way to go.
Better off going with the plan of adding a line with a basic phone and switching the two numbers, but that will cost you another 40$ every bill and verizon will probably still make you pay an arm and a leg for the SGS III essentially at full retail price if you really want to keep that unlimited data plan. So you might as well just pay full price for the phone and then just switch your number to it in order to keep the unlimited data plan.

If I get the GS3 on the extra line and I switch a basic phone onto it, wouldn't it be just 10 dollars a month?
That's basically what I did to keep my unlimited data. Added a line for the GS3, switched it to my line with unlimited data and activated a basic phone I had lying around onto the new line.

How much a month is it for that line? 10 dollars?
Well I have 2 lines that had an upgrade on the same day. Mine had unlimited data, and the other one was my moms who had no data at all. So what we did was use my upgrade to upgrade her line to a sgs3 with 2gb of data a month , then put that phone on my line and put the basic phone back on her line. Then she upgraded with her updrage to a sgs3 for herself

This is what I did as well. Added $10/month to my bill.

I have a question about this. Does the new use of a SIM card change what you're saying about left over fees owed to Verizon? If a person were to buy a phone from Ebay and put their own SIM in would that be Ok even if the original owner owed money on their SIM?
All I did was order online. I originally went into the store to upgrade, but they told me I had to get a new data plan. I went home and ordered the GS3 online that night and it let me keep my unlimited plan. They probably fixed that glitch by now though.

With the new SIM card system that Verizon has started to use, I am not quite sure about that, but when reading past experiences, and one that my cousin had to go through, they all bought used phones from online sites like ebay and amazon, but ended up being unable to apply them to their own plans because of a check that was done on the phone's background. (I know there is a way to do this yourself, but you pretty much have to have the phone in your possession in order to do so.)
When my family had to add a new line to our family plan for my little brother, a basic phone, verizon wanted to charge us $40, and instead we got him a smartphone which was only $30. Verizon is really pushing smartphones, primarily android devices and especially the SGS3. Essentially what they tried to sell us, but we told them no lol.

I got my SGS3 from someone that had left over fees and it didn't effect me at all. I think the SIM card system has made this a thing of the past.

Dude, all u have to do is calling Verizon & give them the imei or serial, they will tell u if the fone legit. Bought mine used but looks like new.

yep or you can use one of the following online service to check the IMEI/MEID, Verizon's is the more accurate one, if it says call customer service then the IMEI is bad:

I upgraded a flip phone line on my plan to the SG3 and gave it 2gb data temporarily. I then had them switch the SG3 to my number, re-enable the flip phone on the upgraded line, and then cancel the 2gb data plan, reverting it back to $10 nondata plan. Verizon will not charge for a data plan that is changed within 24 hours. Worked for me anyhow, but did have to pay the $30 upgrade fee.

Hello all, and first off, let me say congratulations on getting official CM10 and CWM support!
Here's my story (and before anyone asks, I have searched the forums for an answer, but was unsuccessful with finding my specific questions): I am currently on AT&T (was Alltel before they were bought out) with an HTC Aria and my contract for a grandfathered plan was up long ago. It is time for me to upgrade to something a little more modern and I have settled on the Blaze because of its size (I'd like a GNex, but my hands are too small) and a number of reasons. But the biggest reason is that, as I understand, it has full compatibility with both AT&T and T-mobile's 3g (4g for t-mobile) and 2g/EDGE networks.
I don't really like AT&T as a company and I also really like the monthly 4g plans that t-mobile offers. My problem is that according to t-mobile's prepaid coverage map, I won't have data service for most of the area I travel back and forth in (upper midwest USA). And as much as I dislike AT&T, they have good 3g service almost everywhere I go. So, I'd like to be able to take my current sim card and switch it and a t-mobile sim at will while I test out both service providers.
Therefore, my questions are as follows:
1) Where is the best place to buy a blaze off contract? I'd like to get one on ebay because of the price (~$200 is what I have set aside for a new phone), but there aren't that many there, and even fewer that specifically say they are unlocked - which leads to question 2.
2) Can I unlock any phone that is not on a contract (basically anything I would buy used online)? I spoke with a rep from T-mobile and he seemed to indicate that I could only unlock a phone if I was the original purchaser of it and the plan (and account) to go with it. Therefore, according to him, I would have to make sure the phone I bought was already unlocked, otherwise there would be no chance of unlocking it in the future. I would think (possibly incorrectly) that as long as I have a t-mobile account (I plan on buying and activating the $30 monthly 4g plan as soon as I receive the device to compliment my current ATT service), they shouldn't have a problem with giving me the unlock code because they did not subsidize the phone. Could anyone clear this up?
3) There are a number of sites claiming to sell unlock codes for a myriad of devices. I would consider something like that if there was no other way to unlock a second hand phone, but only if I was sure it would work and the site was legit. Are any of these sites legitimate and have you had experience with any of them?
It would be considerably cheaper and easier to find a used device that isn't unlocked, but like I said, I'm not sure if that would bite me in the rear because there is a strong chance that I will stick with AT&T due to them having service where I travel. 1.) Good luck. Not many people are willing to sell their blaze, especially after the past couple weeks three weeks ago you could have had a lot of takers ebay would be your best bet
2.) Tmobile rep led to you like they're supposed to. anybody can request an unlock code for their phone. Naturally if you're on their plan, they'll verify that you are the owner of the account, but still. That being said, just because you can ask doesn't mean they'll give out. If you had a plan (not prepaid) for a year or two in good standings with no late payments and said you were going out of the country for a couple months and want to use your phone on a foreign gsm network, they'd bee more inclined. As a brand new prepaid customer, good luck. Best of buying it unlocked or getting the unlock code elsewhere.

And use paypal when you can, you could always claim you didn't get the service you paid for. Same goes with ebay buyer protection.

Like the other reply. If you bought it from t mobile and said you had to go out of county for work. And would appreciate the unlock code to use other GSM networks. While away. They get commission, so if unlock is the deal breaker, they'll prob give it to you. Or if you ask enough pple. Nicely I'm sure someones bound to give it to you.

Have you considered a carrier like StraightTalk? StraightTalk is a MVNO which resells both T-Mobile AND AT&T service. You can specify what kind of SIM you want when you order it online. Their service prices are pretty good, and in theory their network is basically either AT&T or T-Mo depending on which one you pick.
I've seen mixed reviews on their service and whether or not they'd throttle you on excessive service... some great, some bad, so it'd be caveat emptor, but if your usage pattern doesn't change, you'll likely be fine. Either way, it's up to you to do your own research (as someone else mentioned).

I like eBay. Craigslist can be a little scary because the phone may or may not be stolen. T-Mobile and AT&T have already started disabling phones by their IMEI that have been reported stolen by the user or by the insurance. Soon they'll also start sharing that database, so the phone won't work anywhere in North America if that's the case. There are plenty of scams when it comes to craigslist where a "brand new phone" is purchased and then suddenly reported stolen because it was noticed missing from a back room.
This was my biggest fear in buying my S3. On eBay you get to see things like ratings on the sellers so you can find someone trustworthy, like I did Also, make sure to exercise common sense. If something's too good to be true, it very well may be.

You can unlock any phone you buy, legal or otherwise. T-Mobile has never cared if I was the original purchaser or not, and they shouldn't. They'll only care if it's an original T-Mobile phone or not. T-Mobile will give you an unlock code for a phone as long as you've had 90 days of uninterrupted service. On prepaid they want you to have 60 days (I think) with enough of a balance in your account to pay for another month's service. Not sure about the prepaid requirements, but you can look those up online.
Also, if you just wanna test service, I wouldn't do the monthly 4g $30, I'd do a daily. $3/day gets you relatively unlimited access, and you only need a few days worth to make a decision. Plus, you likely wanna switch to one of the better all-you-can-eat plans, and wouldn't want to be stuck for a month with the cheaper plan. It isn't easy to switch until the month is up.

I've had good luck purchasing codes from eBay. Never had them not work. But with everything eBay, make sure you're using someone reputable.

If it's cheaper to find it locked, then just get it locked and buy an unlock code later. If you aren't going to use AT&T service, then you don't need to SIM unlock the phone anyways. The phone will automatically work on t-mobile, unlocked or not. Finding a good carrier is difficult, I know.
If you decide to try straight talk, you could probably go with a T-Mobile SIM that wouldn't require unlocking the phone. If you find the service lacking, you could switch to an AT&T sim and then deal with unlocking the phone.

As for getting an unlocked device, I'll probably have to buy one whether it's locked or not pretty soon, after seeing how much activity has been going on here lately, lol. Ebay again seems to be the cheapest route for getting an unlock code, and I'll have their buyer protection and Paypal in case the code does not work. (I will first, of course, call and/or online request t-mobile for an unlock after I get my T-mo account setup. Maybe I'll get lucky about unlocking before their traditional 60 days of prepaid service - if not, off to ebay it is cause I need to get my current ATT sim + number on it asap)

They are a lot cheaper than the regular "give us carrier and IMEI and we email code" services also found on ebay and the like. Can I trust this unknown software to be running on my computer and hacking into my phone?

Also, if you think the $30/monthly unlimited text, data, and 100 minutes plan isn't that great, what plan(s) would you recommend? I am certainly never going to sign another contract, so prepaid or monthly is the only long term option if I decide to kill my grandfathered AT&T data plan (which is looking less likely as I know that I can expect good service where I go). I'm thinking you may be pointing me to one of their plans that allows data roaming on T-mobile affiliates? Because their post-paid data map looks a lot better, even comparable to AT&T.
If it's a T-Mobile phone and you have T-Mobile as your carrier, you can call customer care and tell them you just got service with them and are going overseas and need it unlocked so you can use a foreign sim card in it. Thay usually works well.
If not, ask to speak to a supervisor. When transferred, ask the person if they are a supervisor or just an escalation rep. If they are not a supervisor, ask them if they can help you still.
If they won't, ask to speak to an actual supervisor and try again. If all else fails, you do have a window of time to cancel, so you can always tell them you are thinking of canceling and they will probably transfer you to a retention rep. That one's a gamble since you're bluffing.
If retention won't help, hang up in the middle of a sentence and call back. Chances are, you will get a different call center and you can say you got disconnected and try the process again.
That gives you up to 6 potential reps who can help... and they can. I was customer care for a couple years and then in corporate engineering for several years. They are flexible, you just have to play the game.
Probably not the answer you want, but it's what you will have to do to get it unlocked quickly

I have always stayed away from anything that requires a cable. If they can't get you a code based on your IMEI, I don't bother. I used one of those once and I don't remember if it ever worked or not.
The daily plans don't seem to be well advertised on the site. I found them this time around by going to the "no annual contract plans" and then scrolling down to the bottom for daily and other services. Check it out here. I believe their prepaid coverage map hasn't been updated in ages on the site. Supposedly their prepaid coverage map is about 98-99% like their postpaid one. The main difference between the two is that prepaid doesn't allow you to do conditional call forwarding. This is necessary if you want to use another service for voice mail instead of T-Mobile's crappy voicemail.
When I signed up for Tmo they gave me 30 days to confirm if I wanted the contract. You can get a plan and if you dont like it you can just return it before the first 30 days are up and only pay for the minutes you used. This was a big deal for me as I cam from ATT like you, but needed to knwo how well the Tmo service was. I would suggest getting the unlimited everything for $60 a month. Tmo I must say has pretty good customer service. I have had a few problems with them but all it takes is a little social engineering on the phone (saying sprint/whoever will pay your ETF) and you can get some pretty good stuff

nope. there's not many devices out there that support SDXC yet. As time goes on, it'll gain more popularity, but lets face it, as awesome as it is, the blaze is only a mid range device. I wouldnt trade it for any other phone out there, i love my blaze, but still.

Well, that's mildly disappointing, but it doesn't affect my decision making about the phone. I'll have to somehow get by with only 32GB of storage. Speaking of which, how close is a solution to the camera only being able to save to the paltry internal storage? I do like to take lots of pictures with my phone, so this is obviously something I would hope to find a solution to.

Yeah. In a sense, CM9 has a bunch more features. When CM10 started, they basically started from scratch, and the focus was on project butter and some other things. Then they had to start forward porting their CM9 additions into CM10. There are a bunch of things in CM10 now that weren't there just a week or two ago. I think the camera thing will come, just like other features. It seems like the features are starting to come quicker too.
Keep an eye on the changelog. It lists the changes with each release

I bought a 64gig card off Newegg about 3 months ago and it's been working just fine in this phone. In fact, what I read online indicated that just about every "recent" Android phone had no problems reading them at all.
So hey, ther'es that.
And yeah, having 64gigs is nice, especially since this phone has such small amount of user storage on the phone.

all 64gb microsd are categorized as sdxc, and most of recent android phones do work with them.
I just switched to T-Mobile and got 3 Blaze phones. They should arrive today. I only took them because they were free, and I didn't want to pay for GS3's. I'll be selling one right away after the Note 2 is released. If your still looking for one in a couple weeks, lemme know.

Dude, can I ask a HUGE favor? can you not root them immediately?
I'm trying to help the dude that's been helping me with the CM access. He wants to get a copy of a partition in a virgin state (ie... not rooted or modified at all). He's trying to find a way to reset the flash counter. I'm trying to assemble a stock ROM that will be pre-rooted and won't trigger the counter.
If you can avoid rooting 1 (or better yet, 2 in case more testing necessary), I'd really appreciate it. And it'll help the community in the end

With the gear s you had to add another line to your account. For Verizon it was $5 a month. You get a new phone number for the watch. The watch cost $399 off contract and $349 on contract. None of this has anything to do with the e sim. My understanding is its a smaller sim card with no ability to remove. Which is the reason why it is waterproof. I would prefer the waterproof over being able to remove it but that's just me. Some disagree.

Just Google "e-sim", that's what I did . That will quickly answer your main questions, nothing really specific to Gear S2.
With Tmobile, another wearable line is just $5, so it is a nobrainer to either keep /get another Gear S line or disolve it!

So you want 3g (cell service) watch but not to pay any monthly service charges to your phone care provider......... LOL
The way it works is its an add on to your contract for another device. Same as the galaxy gear s.
It's up to your carrier to provide the extra cost for another sim or device. Usually its 5-10 a month but again that depends on your carrier.

Nothing to "LOL" here. I have a phone and a phone number. I buy a 3G enabled smartwatch. I need the flexibility to step out of my house with just the smartwatch and expect to receive my phone calls on the watch. If manufacturers/operators are trying to sell a smartwatch, which is a secondary device to complement your phone, and expect me to buy a new contract with a new number, no matter what the price is; and you are gullible enough to fall for that - then yeah, LOL!

You still need a contract to get NumberSync to work. Note that the article you linked mentions "connected" devices.
Numbersync still means each device has its own number, but the 'server' side connects the two like call/text fowarding.
A device on a network uses resources, why shouldn't a company reclaim the cost of those resources?

That cost should already be built into the monthly plan. If I am paying $60 per month for unlimited talk and text and say 5GB data, I shouldn't have to pay again for another device. But that is how it is in USA with their "device access charge". It's ridiculous for some parts of the world.
In India for example your number/plan is tied only to the SIM card and you are free to switch between devices. My idea of using a smartwatch like LG Urbane 2 is to connect it with my phone using Bluetooth when I am carrying both devices with me; and when I want to leave my phone home, then move the SIM card from my phone to the smartwatch and step out. But that I cannot do in USA unfortunately without adding another line.

Adding a line is not the same as having one line.
One line:
One SIM card, has the ability to only make calls, text, and data from one device at a time. One SIM means one number.
Add a line:
Two SIMS (the watches is embedded). Each can act individually, has two numbers (watch number is hidden and using some back end software AT&T links the phones number with the watch's).
If you want to use one SIM you have to find a watch that you can change out the SIM. The original gear S could. If you really wanted you could swap the Sim out when you left your phone at home, but you wouldn't get notifications from things like what's appwhatsapp since the watch didn't have the app.
Verizon charges $5 for a watch to connect to your plan, that's reasonable to me. $10- $15 is a bit high but not something I would say is ridiculous. If you don't want to pay the price then the service isn't worth it to you and a Bluetooth device might be better.

I'm interested in an answer to the same question but for a different reason. I want to send a Gear S2 3G to my 10 years old brother back in Jordan. Cell service providers over there never heard of e-sims. The only sell sim cards. My brother does not want to carry a phone in addition to the watch fearing losing it.
Is there a way where my parents can buy a regular sim then program its info into the e-sim of the Gear S2. Please let me know if someone managed to do that.

Buy one from whoever you have coverage with. You may have to initially set up a smartwatch plan, but you can cancel it during the first month. If you payed retail for it you now own it.
You should be able to do that with no problem. You will have to pay the full retail price of $299.00 to be able walk away without enabling the 3G. If you decide to activate it, there will probably be some activation fee as well. Better way to do this IMHO is buy it for $199 and commit to 2 years and if you don't like it return it before your 14 day window.
My 3G version has been working great since I got it.

I guess some of my issue, is I have AT&T Unlimited Data Plan which is no longer offered by AT&T. In order to have the Gear S2 on my plan, I have to completely switch to a "shared plan" of which I then have to pick a certain data plan size etc. Its not that I download 60gb a month or something, but I like having the grandfathered unlimited data plan. When I go online to AT&T website there is no option to just buy the phone. They make you sign up for a plan with it, hence the problem. I just wanted to flat out buy it, then see if I want to go with a plan later. Thanks for the replies!

Yeah exactly, why I was thinking for now as a Bluetooth watch, and then later if I want to add the plan, but to lose my unlimited would stick. I think it has to be a share plan, as the watch is an extension of your phone, so they share the data. Not sure though

One is not required to purchase a data plan in order to buy the watch. Just have to pay full price, which is $299. I just walked in an corporate AT&T store & bought it outright.

It has been a nightmare trying to purchase it in a store- att or bestbuy.
Att wanted to charge me $10 /month for just getting the watch while paying the full price for it...
Then I checked on bestbuy's web site, and saw $349 inactivated device (available for pickup same day), so I went to my local store. Needless to say, I was not allowed to purchase it. Wtf... I knew what the att reps are going to say, so I went straight to the Samsung booth, but the poor sales person still had to ask the att reps for permission to sell the watch.. First they said that fir the watch to work, they have to activate it ... Then I pulled the offer on bestbuy's website for the unactivated device... So, they came back telling me that they are out of stock ... LMAO...IDIOTS..
So, I came home and ordered it online from bestbuy.com, mind that it was telling me that I can pick it up the same day from the same local store that "ran out" of it...
I know that att are hungry for every penny they can get their hands on but thought that bestbuy would be smarter...
Regardless, I hate giving them business after all, but my only reasoning is that I want a watch with mic and speaker function, and if something doesn't work right, I can always go back and return it easily rather than dealing with ebay seller's customer service.

Sad to say but I'm tossing my hands in the air with the S6 and Verizon. I can't believe Verizon killed this phone so badly with development while asking such a premium price for their service. Even with a 15% enterprise discount I'm still paying $150+ for 2 phones and 3GB of shared data.
Last night I gave in and ordered a Nexus 6P for myself and a Nexus 5X for the wife and we'll be buying out our phones from Verizon, porting our numbers over to Cricket, and selling the S6's on Swappa. $70 flat per month for 2.5GB per line on Cricket beats the pants of Verizon. Now I know the LTE is capped at 8MB/s and although using ATT network its not quite as good as Verizon, but I'm in WiFi range all day at work and we don't travel across the country much to worry about backwoods coverage.
Anyone else moving to Cricket? Anyone make the move to a Nexus phone, how do you like it?
Good luck getting service anywhere... You may be saving a ton of money, but Cricket sucks terribly.
All traffic goes through a proxy on Cricket and has lower priority than their postpaid customers.
You get what you pay for. Since I use my phone daily, I'd rather err on the side of paying extra to get dependable service. VZW service is second to none. The nexus line works with Version as well.

Please let me know how you like the size and build compared to the s6, im considering doing the same. Also if you dont use data too kuch i recommend considering lycamobile. 23 dollar plan for unlimited talk and text and unlimited 3g data though only 500 mb of 4g. I use it though as i normally have wifi and it saves me so much money and when i do need data its there but a bit slower. Runs on tmobile towers though so if tmobiles bad in your area then avoid it.

Size is definitely bigger but it took me all of 15 minutes to get used to it. With an Otterbox case on my S6 it's not much different for one handed use. I don't use a ton of data but 1.5GB per month is normal usage for me so the 2.5GB Cricket plan is just about right. So far today I've made several calls and texts and no issues. The phone speaker is not quite as loud as the S6 but it gets the job done. The front speakers are way louder than the S6's little downfiring one but the sound quality is not quite as good as the HTC phones with boomsound.

What company allows you to have corporate email on an unlocked phone? That's the entire point of why Verizon and Samsung lock the phones down. That's why Knox is the best security out there, to meet compliance standards. For me it's not even a question, no way to have an unlocked phone with corporate data on it. I have an unlocked S5 Dev model I can switch to if I want to play with ROMs but can't have corporate data on it, security tools will catch me in a second.

Why cricket? Why not T-Mobile? $80/month Unlimited all w/ 7gb Tethering. All at LTE. I currently use it without a contract and use a Droid Turbo for the moment(had a Nexus 5, but I wore it out way too much, getting back to the Nexus line in the next month. Been using all Nexus models since the Nexus S 4G)
Or you can do like Metro PCS or a lower plan on T-Mobile and save alot since it looks like you don't use much data anyways.
If you bought a 6P use project fi. It's really great, plus with wifi you may save even more money. 2 lines would be $40 then you pay for your data at $10/GB. We have 4 lines at $80 and use very very little data. My total bill is under $100 every month!!

Last night I gave in and ordered a Nexus 6P for myself and a Nexus 5X for the wife and we'll be buying out our phones from Verizon, porting our numbers over to Cricket, and selling the S6's on Swappa. $70 flat per month for 2.5GB per line on Cricket beats the pants of Verizon. Now I know the LTE is capped at 8MB/s and although using ATT network its not quite as good as Verizon, but I'm in WiFi range all day at work and we don't travel across the country much to worry about backwoods coverage.
Anyone else moving to Cricket? Anyone make the move to a Nexus phone, how do you like it?

I have 2 lines too. The service fee is $70 plus tax for 4gb shared data. The Go90 app will give you 2gb free data for 3 months. If you want to cheap service, Ringplus maybe the best option in the market. Please check ringplus.net and it has Leonardo free plans available now. I signed up the service using my old Nexus 5 and it was supported by advertisement to cut down the service fee.

Didn't see that. Well my account still only charges me $80/month.
MetroPCS is still $60/Month for Unlim all, so that's a plus at least. Better than Cricket.

Yeah, I'm about to keep T-Mobile as my main and get a Karma with its unlim. plan in the next week or two, since I kinda have 7 phones, a tablet, and 2 laptops....

What company allows you to have corporate email on an unlocked phone? That's the entire point of why Verizon and Samsung lock the phones down. That's why Knox is the best security out there, to meet compliance standards. For me it's not even a question, no way to have an unlocked phone with corporate data on it. I have an unlocked S5 Dev model I can switch to if I want to play with ROMs but can't have corporate data on it, security tools will catch me in a second.

In my experience, companies that require you to have a mobile device AND have it locked down to access corporate e-mail will often times either provide you with a company cell phone or give you the choice to use your own device.
I've yet to work for a company that required I have access to a corporate e-mail and network account and not provided me with a company cell phone. Then, I have the company phone which is all locked down, stock, and only used for company business but the plus side is I do not pay for it. Then I carry my personal cell phone on which I can do whatever I please.

Does the $150 includes the monthly phone payments? I just recently gave up grandfathered unlimited data for the Verizon no contract 24 payments phone purchase. I am paying about $147 monthly with 3 gigs of shared data. That includes about $55 for monthly phone payments. If I purchased the phones outright, a S6 and iPhone 6S, the payments would be around $92 a month. Apparently you puchased your phones outright. I would think another $20 would be worth the much better service you would receive with Verizon.
