Heres a low light pic of my daughters "Rare Shiny" Vaporeon.

I've been prepping for this thing to get into my hands by shooting in a few places that I usually find myself in, some being really low light. (Jazz clubs and art museums with fragile items.) I've shot in these spaces with every camera I've ever owned. (FF DSLR's on down to cellphones)

Up to you . Im going to keep mine and see if it gets rooted. If it doesn't... well, i might keep it quite a few month. after all i only paid 600+ for it, not 800+
I think that the problem relies on the ISO i was using. Let me show you all 3 pictures and zoom them in , you will see that the noise significantly diminishes .

Oh man. Looks like I need to get a case.

Camera on auto mode is AWFUL at any kind of action shots. In a CrossFit competition this weekend and the camera couldn't keep up at all and most shots are BLURRY. I ddn't go into manual mode cuz i figured the phone would keep up, wish i would have viewed the pics before. Disappointed big time with this.

I looked in the modes after the fact and did not see one, may need to find an alternative cam app. Problem was I know exposure and all that but when competing i gave it to my husband to take pics., i could have made corrections shooting manual but honestly, didn't expect to have to do so.

I actually really like how that looks. It's got a quality I really like to work with. Once I actually get my phone in hand and start playing with it, I'll see if I have the same type of noise. If it's the same and I can figure out a workflow on mobile to recreate what I used to do with my old Nikon D80, I'll share the workflow to make that kind of noise work for you.

Check the last post on page number one. There you will see that the noise was reduced alot from left to right. The first one is the same one i posted first, the second and third i lowered the iso and adjusted the aperture. Now, remember, i was using manual mode, if it had been in automatically, maybe it would have adjusted everything itself and reduce the noise on its own.

I'm actually very keen to play with the noise generated off of this sensor. Something to note is that on the Nexus 6, engaging HDR in the Google Camera app cleaned up a lot of the noise from that sensor's files and made them quite usable so I'll be looking into that too. But yeah, if the noise has certain characteristics, it can make for some good photos.

A couple of shots of a photogenic spider from yesterday. Between Google's compression during upload, then redownloading and uploading to XDA only to be compressed again, I think they still look pretty good.
Anybody know how to embed links straight from Google Photos?

On action shots , did you use burst mode. The LG G5, LG G4 and V10 were brilliant using this method. Another option is record in 4K and then extract 8mp stills from the video.

Sense Camera ~Does~ take 8MP Pictures as Advertised!

OK folks, move along, nothing to see here. I hate it when people cover up their retarded mistakes, so I will leave mine out here for any interested parties to see.
Has no one else noticed, or is it just not a big deal to anyone? The Sense camera only takes 3264 x 1840 images! That is at the "8MP" setting!! A simple plug-n-chug in a calculator nets you 6,005,760 pixels, or 6MP, not 8.
A quick check in CameraZoomFX shows images being taken at 3264 x 2448, a much more honest 7.99MP (Which I will call 8 ). Does this not upset anyone?? That rapid-fire shutter was one of the camera's biggest selling points for me, but I don't want to take pictures that are pre-cropped!

if you explore further, turn off widescreen under camera options and you get the same 3264x2448. camerafx doesn't do widescreen photos as far as I know.
Or what the guy above me just said
Is your camera set to widescreen?

Thanks guys. I would tell you how long I looked for that setting... But you might think me even dumber.
So why does it default to wide screen? That seems weird. I didn't realize that I was only taking 6 MP shots til now.

I knew about this...I personally like widescreen. It wouldn't be so bad if they didn't blatantly lie to us by saying that the widescreen setting is 8mp.
Has anyone compared the two settings and notices a difference in image quality? this def explains the smaller picture files thought. I never 'really' thought about it until now.
they need to remove the 8m next to the resolution. thats bull
Sample Pics - Low Light
Real quick comparison showing the differences between the "Widescreen (Fake 8 MP)" mode vs "Normal (Real 8 MP)" mode.
Only editing done to the images is a crop overlay.
Shots taken in my living room that is mostly dark with one lamp bouncing light off the wall. Also manually set the ISO to 200 & 400 for comparison (auto ISO is setting crazy high values and degrading the photos immensely).

No they don't. As your lighting conditions diminish the photo quality degrades and its very noticeable, especially in auto-everything mode.

HTC is probably deliberately setting the ISO high on auto and trying to use the LED flash when ISO cannot get sharp 4 fps capture, I'm guessing their logic is that a noisy photo is better than a blurry mess, seeing as how most people will only use it for uploading to Facebook, they won't be able to tell the difference once FB's compression mangles it anyways.
I didn't find it for a while either... Just a crop, kinda annoying actually. It's awesome to shoot with the screen full, but you're just throwing away pixels.
Off topic a little, but still camera related. Has anyone noticed that if you set you screen brightness to low, open up your camera, take a pic, hit your home button and the darn screen is all jacked up to the brightest level. Is it my phone, a setting or normal?

S4 camera better than lumia 920 and iPhone 5

The s4 has been ranked second after the untouchable Nokia 808. http://bgr.com/2013/05/24/galaxy-s4-camera-test-iphone-5/ funny enough the over hyped HTC one is no where to be found.

Read your post twice. Still desperately trying to find a sense in it that would justify opening yet another camera thread. Camera still superb at good conditions. And really crap at lowlight and fast moving objects. Shutter speed is pathetic. ONEs video/sound recording also way better. And I tested both for weeks. But wait: that's been basically said on every second page here.

I hate the way reviewers just say Galaxy S4......WHICH VERSION????
They are both very very different!
I think Samsung could do better camera. In low light conditions it is crap, shutter speed is still very low and on 1080p videos you've got tearing smearing with picture zoomed in.
You know, low-light (especially with motion) is the weak-spot of the GS4 camera but we have plenty of examples of high shutter speed images in the various camera threads.
Captures of hose water, kids jumping and so on are "frozen" as long as it's medium light or above.

My low light experience with the S4 is superb. It's able to capture, in night mode, even pictures made in a dark room.
Anyway, use the flash if you in a dark place
I would agree, the s4 really has got itself a very good camera. Im an outgoing person and I take most of my photos in high or medium lights. Its very seldom that I would take pictures of something or someone in low lights. I would use a flash if i really want to capture them with as much detail as possible.
Heres my very first shot of my s4 after i got it out of the box. It was very cloudy thst day. I cropped the fountain area only.

All cameras are useless in low light unless you can control the shutter speed and keep the camera stable. Even high end Cannon or Nikon cameras need a good flash or a tripod to get good results in those kinds of conditions. If you have unwanted motion in the framing then it's game over. At the end of the day, if you can't get light through the lens and onto the sensor, you can't expect to get good pictures. There are dirty tricks that can are employed, such as a high ISO speed, merging images, or a large low res sensor, but at the end of the day you're still making sacrifices with the image.
This low light camera business has become a proper skit for selling smart phones.

Shocked at photo quality

OK so im coming from a long line of iPhones and after getting bored of iOS this is my first venture into Samsung. I took this photo at the club I work at last night and seriously, what is going on here? The flash pics were pretty crap too, finding it very hard to focus after pressing the shutter.

I also noticed the pictures weren't what I expected.
They tend to blur quite easily.
I'm hoping a software update will sort it.
It's a 13MP camera, you're either doing something wrong or your camera is bad.

I agree with the poster, ive had many phones and by far the note 3 has the worst photo quality ever, im really dissapointed for a ~750 euro device to have such a bad camera. 13MP looks nice in the specs but numbers is not everything.
To me it looks like there is some kind compression on the image, maybe the firmware has some kind of compression method to keep the camera up to speed for zero shutter lag.
Hope samsung will look into this and give us an update in the camera firmware.

What do you expect? The camera has a 1/3" sensor, a FX SLR has ~28 times the sensor area. This means that you would need 28 times the light (or time) to shoot a photo with same quality.
This is not possible because in the conditions where your photo was shot you would need a tripod and long exposure (which is not useable on moving objects) to make a photo which has comparable quality like an outdoor picture!
Anyhow, I have the N3 for one day now and I am happy with it so far, especially with the better camera!

Well it does have to do with the megapixels because the more you have the less the typical blur will be visibly apparent as a result of movement, which seems to be the case here, whether that be movement by you or the subject.

It isnt blur, it's the denoise that samsung is using. This is a software issue, among other things obviously. Whether or not they fix it I have no idea.

Until manufacturers either quit trying to outdo each other with more megapixels on the same size sensor, lower the megapixels on the same size sensor (like HTC did with the One), or increase the sensor size (such as Apple just did with the 5s), low light photos are going to have more and more noise. The smaller the pixel, the less light it captures, which results in worse low light performance.

For the car stereo photo: The camera is metering for the bright screen. Try HDR, or using a flash. I'm currently on an ASOP rom so I can't recall if there is a way to change the metering mode, but try the others.

Sure you can: Center, Spot and Matrix.
For OP: Try Spot metering. You can also lock on the dashboard and then reframe on the radio display (you can lock exposure and focus, if I recall correctly, by holding the shutter button - but only if burst mode is disabled). But then you'll probably have the display overexposed.
OP I would agree with you, I'm far from impressed with the camera on this phone, I suppose some would say it's not the sort of phone for people who like taking photos and to choose a different phone. However coming from the Note 2, HTC One and Z1 all performed pretty well in lowlight conditions and were pretty quick at taking photos, this is pretty naff in lowlight even with the flash on as there seems to be too much of a delay with the shutter!
Today I took a couple of photo's in good light and I had to hold the phone still for like 3/4 secs otherwise my photo blurred like crazy! Either there is another setting I've turned on by mistake or its just this phone.
I'm glad I have a decent camera and don't really on this as my main camera....

Turn off smart stabilization and set iso to 800. Iso metering to spot.

Don't expect any decent quality on an ISO setting that high..

My suggestion was based on the pictue he posted. With that same situation, I think this setting would produce better results if he doesnt prefer using flash.
If he wants to use flash, I would suggest a different setting.

Btw, the note 3's iso can go up to 1000 if its set to Auto. The quality at that iso level sucks even if theres enough ambient light.
Disagree about the camera, I have taken some superb shots with the note 3 , low light as well as daytime.

The ISO on my EOS 70D can go to 12800 (Nobody in their sane mind uses that). It produces pictures that look like something made with a 2001 VGA camera. :silly: The higher you set the ISO, the worse the noise is going to be. Just because it can doesn't mean it should

I agree that the note 3 camera aint so bad. I actually feel that it takes better shots than an SLR in daylight conditions. For medium to low light, thats when the note 3 starts to lose it edge. I almost always have to resort to using flash, and evenso, if the subjects are far like more than a meter away, the flash just wont cut it.
Dont get me wrong though, I love my note 3. Its not like I take a lot of photos in medium and low lights.

It seems that way because the camera on the Note 3 (and most smartphones) oversaturates the picture. Makes the colours look all bright and shiny, and people like that.
It's when you zoom in past 20% actual-size preview that you start seeing the difference. (Unless you use one of those cheap pointless SLR's that sell for 100-300 quid. Those actually do take worse pictures.)

CAMERA ISSUE, Delayed Photo, Blurred Shot

Hi,
This is really starting to piss me off, especially coming from a Pixel XL which I think arguably had a better camera.
When I press the camera button on my S8+, there is a slight delay before the picture actually gets taken. If someone was moving after I press the camera button, they are completely blurred in my photo! It is not capturing the moment that I actually take the photo.. It is capturing a few milliseconds after.
This is super annoying, is anyone else experiencing this?
Thanks

Try sport shot when capturing kids or moving objects..
I just did a test on my pixel and s8 and both seem to blurry and not be as sharp with a moving subject.... One thing that I did to cut down on photo delay, which is a double edged sword for me because I love the feature... But what I did was cut off motion photo and my photos are instant now.. before that there was a slight delay understandably so as it was recording video as well... Idk if you have that feature eon or not but if you do turn it off.

Thanks for the heads up, it seems my motion photo was off by default. Not sure what's causing the delay still

Ok also do you buy any chance have the battery saver mode on with the option that limits the CPU to 70% that could also be an issue. And I keep HDR on AUTO idk if you leave it on maybe that cause a little delay because of the extra processing. Lol I'm kind of just throwing out suggestion because it's really a great camera so I don't see why your having the issues you are.

Maybe you are using an external microsd to save the images?. Using internal memory will be always faster...
Anyone else noticing a soft washed out look on faces in pictures? Almost like a beauty face filter?

You need to learn something about basics of photography. Lack of good light means longer exposure time and all the objects from frame that are moving will get blurry. You can go to manual and increase the ISO settings to shorten the exposure time.
With a 2000 USD DSRL you will get the same result IF your settings are not right for the scene you try to get.

Thanks, maybe it is just that the Pixel has better default camera settings. Seems the Samsung devices have super soft washed out default settings indoors

Looks to be the case. I used to have a 6P and while it was slower it was sharper and didn't have that looks on faces.

I agree. Not a fan of this soft washed out look. Make sure the skin tone setting is all the way down. It helps a tiny bit.
not good

Glad to see I'm not crazy. This only seems to happen indoors with low light really. Which is unfortunate
