Android Beta Program - Google Pixel Questions & Answers

Has anyone been able to register their Pixel for the Android Beta yet? Or is it not supported yet? (I realize they aren't listed, but since they are the flagships now, I assumed the page just hadn't been updated)

Is it the phone or the account that is registered to Beta? Not on my Pixel right now but my N5x just got the Dev 7.1 and I recall the pull down notification window has a Beta Icon.

Supposed to be the account, then you register the phone. I have the account signed in, but the phone doesn't show up in the list of recognized devices. I'm assuming it's just too new, but was looking for others to confirm.

Think for now Pixels have latest OS so Beta irrelevant maybe?

this is what is stated on the beta website. Pixels will not get 7.1.1 until December. the pixel phones are not dev devices
Here are the milestones for Android 7.1 Developer Preview.
Preview 1 (Android 7.1.1 initial release, beta, final APIs)
Nexus 5X, Nexus 6P, Pixel C
Preview 2 (Android 7.1.1 near-final system images for final testing)
Nexus 6, Nexus 5X, Nexus 6P, Nexus Player, Nexus 9, and Pixel C, General Mobile 4G (Android One)
Final release to AOSP and OEM ecosystem
Nexus 6, Nexus 5X, Nexus 6P, Nexus Player, Nexus 9, and Pixel C, General Mobile 4G (Android One), Pixel, Pixel XL

Where do you see that Pixel phones aren't dev devices?

Well because they really are not. They may not say it but it's kinda clear.
Look at the release schedule. Do you see the Pixel phones getting the beta? Nope

So, since they have publically stated there will be no more Nexus devices, do you supposed Google is done with public development devices now...? The website just says other devices will be included in December.
I'm not saying they are dev devices, just saying it doesn't make sense that Google is completely discontinuing the dev program.

No it says that the pixels will be getting the final release of 7.1.1 not any betas. The nexus phones are still their dev phones for right now. Will they do more next year... Who knows

New Nexus OS?

Hey guys,
I just got to thinking...everyone assumes there'll be a new Nexus later this year but I'm starting to wonder. The "Nexus class" has always been used as a flagship of the most current Android version (Moto Droid = Eclair, Nexus One = Froyo, Nexus S = Gingerbread, Xoom = Honeycomb, GNex = ICS, Nexus 7 = Jelly Bean). But with Jelly Bean already coming out, what would be on a newer one this fall? Would Google really release a 4.2/5.0 update in another 3-4 months? Would the Nexus instead be the poster child for the hot new 4.1.x update?
On the other hand, Google wouldn't want to miss holiday season sales would they? All this makes me unsure of when the next Nexus will come out...what do you all think? I'd personally buy the newer hardware in a heartbeat even if it were "only" running JB...but I'm certainly not an average consumer=/
I think google release new version of Android which name is already out and they will put it in there new nexus device .....

That is a good point but word on the web is that Google will be releasing 5 different nexus devices with 5 different manufactures representing the 5th birthday.

From what I remember, that was about giving the OEMs source way earlier than usual for non-Nexus manufacturers. There was never a guarantee that we'd see stock AOSP devices from these OEMs or that there would be more than one "Nexus" branded device.
Even if it does happen that way, with 5 new Nexus devices, it doesn't say anything about OS. I guess if we're going to be seeing a multitude of stock AOSP devices hitting the market from all major OEMs, it could be signalling the imminent end to custom manufacturer ROMs ("skins"). That would mean Google's strategy is shifting to only really care about (even prefer to have) only Nexus devices as major Android phones. If that's the case, I guess it's feasible that they could release 4.2 or 5.0 this fall since all the devices it cares about will run the new version.
If they release a new Nexus device this year it'll most likely be a 4.1.x version.
I wouldn't concentrate so hard on the OS rather than what the Nexus line means to us XDA'ers.
Unlocked
Pentaband (850,900,1700,1900,2100)
Google Support
I'd say those 3 features alone would sell the phones for anyone that knows of SU. Gnex was a huge deal because of the fact it was the first Nexus-branded Pentaband phone which meant a unified developer front (excluding CDMA carriers of course).

I'm personally hoping for a device that is not only pentaband HSPA+ but also supports multiple LTE frequencies...though I realize that's a pipe dream=/ Still though I'm concentrating on the OS just for what "Nexus" means. I don't know if you've seen the long thread about whether or not the CDMA/LTE Nexus is a "real" Nexus, but it has got me thinking about the topic. Historically, the release of a new Nexus class device has mean a new Android version is upon us...so that should hold true if we see one this fall, no?
Will be interesting..

I remember there was a rumour back before ICS was released, that there would be 3 different ICS Nexus from 3 different companies.

Features (a question)

My friend and I was having a discussion on the Nexus 5 against other smart phones in the current market, and we got on to the discussion on to its features that it has and what other phones don't. I know the nexus 5 was designed with Google in mind but as my friend mentioned I believe you can link your Google up with other phones as well? Or is this Nexus 5 feature? Or are do some features exist on the Nexus 5 that are not available on any other smart phone (android related) through a download?
Cheers

the nexus 5 isnt a phone made for special features to try and sell it. its more or less a developers phone. i guess it has 2 "features" that other android phones dont have. first is hdr+(but other phones have hdr, hdr+ is just better). and the second one is the important one, one that all nexus phones come with that others do not, fastboot oem unlock.

I suppose we can also say Photsphere (although there are other versions of this) and GEL (Even though GPE devices get this).

Yes and no. Not necessarily for root users. We do see commits fixing bugs in AOSP before a Nexus gets a release. So sure, we get the quickest full releases of official updates but some stuff, aosp users on all devices will get before standard n5 users.
I didn't realise this until recently. There was a bug with the window manager on stock where floating windows would not float over other windows. I moved to aosp to get the fix as i was sick of waiting.
Nexus mainly only gets full version releases 4.4.1, 4.4.2 etc but AOSP gets commits that don't increment the version. One benefit of OEM can be as they release fixes for their crappy frameworks, they can also pull fixes from google whilst we're waiting for a new version

so, it sounds like, most of these "features" of the nexus 5 are more like the benefits of owning a nexus 5

[silly question] Will nexus 5 get the final Android L?

This might be silly question, but i have been wondering if we will get the final Android L in fall. I am very new to this how this gets updated and so on, and i wondered if we will be left with only the testing version of Android L or we will get the final thing too in fall as official update to nexus 5?

Nexus devices usually get 18 months of updates after release, so yes.
Thread belongs in Q&A, not General.
The Nexus 5 will get the L update. Even ones after that

No doubt! Wouldn't make much sense giving us a preview and then not giving us an update
Never fear...it will be here!
Of course, that's what the Nexus line of phones were meant for. That's what this OS was built and tested on by google engineers.

The last major update for the Nexus 5 will most probably be the L release. Minor updates will happen like we had 4.4.1, 4.4.2 and such.

No, if L is 5.0, the Nexus 5 will at least get 5.1 as well. It won't be a question until 5.2, but the Nexus 5 will probably get that as well. Heck, we're pretty sure even the Nexus 4 will get L, and the N5 will get updates at least a year longer than the N4.
I see the same question by many Nexus 4 users. "Will we get an official Android L?"
I also think we (Nexus 5) will get an official Android 5.0 too.:silly:
And you really needed to open a new thread for that instead of asking in one of the countless L threads ? Hope the mods will clean up here soon.

Oneplus 6 Oxygen OS updates & Project Treble

Hi guys, Im currently the owner of a Nexus 6P looking for an upgrade. Im torn between the Pixel 2 XL and OnePlus 6!
I love the quick software updates on the pixel line but i've heard that OnePlus is pretty good at getting updates out and with Android 8.1 bringing project treble would it be right to assume the updates could be even faster in the future?
How does oxygen OS compare to stock android? Have people with 5Ts had quick updates?
Thanks

Hey buddy,
I'm currently on the OnePlus 5 and have had it since launch. It's my first OP phone and won't be my last.
In terms of updates, I would say OnePlus is one of the best out there (at least in the first year of a phones release). Having said that, the OP3/T seem to have had pretty decent updates in their second year with them getting an Oreo 8.0 beta before the OP5/T!
With treble being mandatory on any new phone now, it will be there and their release cycle will no doubt be impacted by it. I can only assume this will be to our (as consumers) benefit.
If you want the fastest updates out there after / in line with Pixel then the main other contender is Nokia. They are doing all of the monthly security updates and sometimes before they come to the Pixel phones.

Well it's great to see the OnePlus 6 is being released with the Android P Beta program! Makes me confident that OnePlus will have fast updates due to project treble!!

When will The oneplus 6 receive Android P stable version

I've searched for this everywhere.. but haven't find an answer.
What will happen to the oneplus 6 and the other unpixel devices that support P beta, when the development ends and google releases the public version ?
Will it be instantly updated alongside the pixel devices ?
isnt the whole purpose of treble to make the updates easily available, the rest is up to manufacturers
Android P will be in Beta till the Pixel 3 is released - normally November.
One would assume that a stable kernel and OS will be available for OnePlus to use around that time (maybe as late as Jan 2019 depending on OnePlus's resources). Be patient. If you are apart of the P beta program then get used to the issues associated with beta software

So oneplus will stay in beta months after the official release? This is ridiculous.. it's supposed to get it as soon as it becomes official

No, it's supposed to get it much quicker then other OEMs if a phone is part of Project Treble. The Google Pixel phones will ALWAYS be the first to get it as it's made for the Pixel line... the OEMs like OnePlus will get it sonner then most and it's just much easier to get it to the phones. So expect it roughly a month or so maybe 2 after it's released on the Pixel line.
Become a developer and write yourself a working Android P if you don't want to wait

What?? Why would it not be official until the pixel 3 launch???
Android P will probably be released in August like Android Oreo, and it will probably be official in August/September
Lol. People will never be happy... Whaaaa? No official P at the same time with Pixel 3? Feel blessed that you have Project Treble. Before Treble, OEMs was getting source code only after the final version was released. That was the point when OEMs could start working on their betas. Or to put it on other words: first betas late November (in the best scenario) and final release February, March. Now we have betas in May-June and people are still crying lol.

You asking question about when the beta will be released won't make the update come fast. You'll know when the update will be released. Till then keep researching.

I understand perfectly... Google will never allow another device to have the newest Android version before the pixel line and once it's out on the pixels, they will release it to the other pens when they choose, which likely will be a bit after it's on the pixels for a bit. It's just the way it is, treble or not.
what's the rush anyway?? it's a freaking phone not your life support system... smh

100% agree with this! If you want the latest and greatest first, then Pixel phones are the best options. For me, the latest security updates are the most important thing - any phone manufacturer that doesn't release these on time is dead to me (Huawei is the worst).. I think what OnePlus is doing is better than the average, so if you don't like it, move along..

It's available as a beta.. they're already in the process of customizing it... And that's a first for android and google.. and that's why in my opinion it should be available for the beta supported devices much faster than previous iterations, I Mean..... What's the point of the beta then ?
