Ambient display? - Honor 8 Questions & Answers

Does anyone know how to enable ambient display for notifications at least? Surprised it's left out of the device. Already tried the Xposed module. And it didn't work.

Sadly I don't think EMUI has Ambient Display.
Sent from my honor 5X using XDA Labs

Doesn't the fact that it has an LCD display mean doing so will eat battery life something fierce?

It is better to be away , trying to enable or using apps to do will consume a lot of battery .

not supported

If it's AOSP then there is a way.

Notification display turn on(lollipop)?

Receiving a notification doesn't turn on the display, is there some sort of setting I have to enable?
Anyone?
The nexus 5 doesn't have a AMOLED screen, so Ambient Display is not supported. Catalcysm Rom added it also to the Nexus 5, but I wouldn't use that, since it worsens your battery live.
You need to download a app to make this possible, like Screen Notifications (from Luke Korth) or Ac Display (Artem Chepurnoy)
Yeah thanks.
I guess I'm on an older version of cataclysm.
Got home, and learned proper name of it. Didn't know it was called ambient display. Cheers...

You mention battery life...
How would one turn off vibrate?
Talking with a friend, bzzt, bzzt from 13% to 5% in about 3 min.

Always on display...

Do you guys think it would be possible for the Honor 8 to be getting an Always On display feature? I know the Pixel 2 has it and I just think it would be neat if Huawei incorporated that feature on to the Honor 8, whether it'd be on the (hopefully) upcoming update or some other way. In my opinion I think it would be better to have that feature instead of having your phone turn on normally (with the background and everything) to every notification you get (assuming you have that turned on like I do), plus it saves some battery life in the long run. What do you guys think?

I think that it might eat more battery because honor 8 has lcd display and not amoled. Amoled display is only using battery on those pixels that are on, so blacks don't use any battery. Lcd display needs the whole display to be alight when its using even one pixel on the screen. I think that with lcd displays it's better to use the notification led which we already have.

True, I never actually thought of that. So does that mean the always on feature is only on AMOLED phones?
Lg g6 has always on feature even though it has an LCD panel

Im not saying that AOD would not work on LCD. There are some apps on google playstore that should do the trick. I dont know how well they work but you can try some. See if drain your battery.

Yea those apps drain the battery. I remember trying it out on my old Nexus 5. However having that feature already integrated into the system of the phone and having a separate app are 2 different things as having it integrated into the system allows it to be more optimized, meaning that it could minimally affect battery life unlike having a separate app.
I use an AOD along with macrodroid so it only comes on when charging. My phone sits on a dock next to my bed so it becomes a night clock with the brightness set to low. Works pretty neat actually, but wouldn't recommend it for normal use as it eats the battery

always on display

I am planning to buy one plus 7 Pro.. Had never previously bought one plus device only pixel and Samsung note. Only feature I am concerned is always on display. Is the feature present or only ambient display is there.. Also is there any way through magisk module or anything to get AOD..

No there is no always on display, only ambient display. There was a work around for the 6T but it had a lot of issues. I wouldn't buy it if that's a feature you just have to have.
Ambient only, no module as of now for native AoD, just apps in playstore
Try Always on Amoled from the playstore, pretty straightforward, been using it for a few days now.

Hasn't been too bad, couple extra % here or there but with the rapid charge on the phone I don't worry about it. I would say it's similar to my Note 9/S10 +.
Always on Amoled is what I use and I have zero issues with battery life or the app itself.
Always on amoled is great but breaks lift to wake for stock ambient display functionality. Need to tap the screen or press power to get the fingerprint scanner to appear for a scan. So close to being a perfect AOD solution for OP devices.

Ambient display

Is there a way to keep ambient display on all the time like pixel 3a or Samsung always on display?
I like the tap to wake but would like it always on. Thanks
Not yet. I read some custom roms have it. For now I use Screen Saver with no display Time out ?

As of now its only possible with a ROM like Havoc.
Yes you can. I found out quite easy. Playstore do this app.

Its a big battery drain ?

Aosp AOD vs apps AOD for battery?

Hello
I love OOS + Renovate on my rooted 7 Pro, but I also kinda missed AOD from my s10+, now I have the choice between using a third party app or flash an aosp custom rom that has its own AOD.
Would the AOD of the custom rom save more battery than the third party app?
When we are talking about AOD, we must talk about kernel support AOD. All the way, AOD implementation in kernel and ROM is way better than App

Pretty much 100%. If the AOD is implemented in the ROM (on kernel level), the device can still enter deep sleep state with it on.
Every playstore aod app will always keep the device awake (prevent deep sleep) and cause significantly higher battery drain.

In the app I downloaded there is a superuser option, dunno if it's the same as what you were talking?

I guess this does improve power consumption, but can't quite match with an implementation directly in the system.

I am now using Taichi opaodmod, it's taking about 5 to 10% battery per hour depending on the brightness, I guess it's not optimized too right?
It was my last try before going to aosp like crdroid

Well first hour it was 4-5% per hour, but then I don't know if I abused of my 7 pro because I surfed the web from time to time or it was the app but it was like 10% per hour

Afaik Samsung built in aod is way better, more like 2%. I'm not sure though as I haven't checked into that for a while.
Still 10% is extremely high considering it empties your battery in just 10 hours.

I doubt it was 2% only with my s10+, more like 3-4%.
Now I am using crdroid rom, first test gave me a nice 4%, I will run another 1h test to confirm
If any of you are rooted you should try this out

It works flawlessly. This AOD mod is good

Just started using it so haven't had much time to monitor it yet. But so far not bad at all
I am gonna go back to OOS and try this mod again, I used the beta version so perhaps the final one is better for battery. Crdroid is a great rom and it has AOD but its AOD brightness is too high as it won't use the Auto brightness, I also faced some bugs like instable brightness in low light, double tap to wake that won't work randomly....

Yes the latest version of this mod works good. You don't even need Taichi this time around
