[GUIDE] Sideloading Nougat on your G4+, from any firmware version. (e.g MPJ24.139-48) - Moto G4 Plus Guides, News, & Discussion

NO PC REQUIRED AT ALL FOR THIS TUTORIAL!
READ ME: I am not responsible for bricked/damaged devices from following this procedure. It should be safe, if done right on the supported models. This does not void your warranty, but it is soak test firmware, meaning that it is beta software, and might have bugs/issues. I haven't noticed any myself, however.
Alright, I am aware that there are already videos describing how to install Nougat, but this is a (fairly) easy to follow text tutorial.
Step 1: Make sure your running the latest Marshmallow.
Before you can install the Nougat update, you have to make sure that you are running the latest Marshmallow firmware for your device. If your phone is running the MPJ24.139-63 firmware, you are good to go. Anything lower, and you will have to update your firmware, either manually, or through the OTA checker.
UPDATE: Download this file and flash it in recovery the same way that you install Nougat, to update to the latest Marshmallow firmware, if you are on anything lower than MPJ24.139-63: https://docs.google.com/uc?export=download&confirm=mkUs&id=0BzpjDRtfDv8PdER0cml3VzRHZTA
Step 2: Download the Nougat OTA File.
Follow this link to download the Nougat OTA file: http://downloadmirror.co/Uq5/Blur_Version.24.31.64.athene.retail.en.US.zip
Step 3: Boot into Recovery.
You have to boot into recovery to sideload this OTA file. First, power off the device completely. When it is completely powered down, hold the Volume Down button, and then the power button, not letting go of either button, until an Android appears, with a bunch of text. You are now in Fastboot Mode. Press the Volume Down button until you see Recovery Mode, then hit the power button.
Step 4: Install.
Once you are in Recovery, you may see an Android logo again, with the text "No Command" below it. What you need to do here is hold the power button, and whilst holding the power button, press Volume Up, to access the menu. It is easy from here. You need to select the option to install update from SD Card, using the Volume buttons for navigation, and Power to select. From there, you find where you downloaded the BLUR_VERSION.24.31.64.ATHENE.RETAIL.EN.US.ZIP file, and select it. It will start installing the official Nougat OTA. Give it some time, upwards of 15 minutes to install. Once it has complete, simply select the Reboot system now option, and if all went well, you should see the "Android is upgrading" screen, and now you are running official Nougat soak test on your G4.
NOTES - The install may hang on the "Patching system image after verification." message. Give it around 5-10 minutes, it will eventually pass that stage.
I can't guarantee that this method will work on all G4 variants. I can confirm it works on a UK Retail XT1622, however.
This may make it harder to install the stable official Nougat when that releases worldwide, I am not sure yet if it affects the upgrade path to the stable firmware.
KNOWN ISSUES
I actually have not found any issues with this firmware yet, it appears VERY stable for a soak test build. If you have come across any, or need help, comment below.
COMPATIBLE MODELS
These models have said to have had success with this update.
XT1643 - Moto G4 Plus Dual-SIM (India)
XT1640 - Moto G4 Plus Dual-SIM (Brazil)
XT1642 - Moto G4 Plus
XT1622 - Moto G4
XT1626 - Moto G4 (India)

@LoopingCreeper is your 1622 a single sim? I have a 1622 single sim from tesco and I haven't received the 6.0.1 ota to 139-63 probably cause I'm not on the retgb software channel. Did you get the ota pushed to your phone ?

when i try to apply update from SD, m getting error 'internal and extenal memory not found'..i tried mounting SD card but i am still geting this error. how to resolve this error?
Is there any other way to install this update on my device.

I am from Brazil and am currently using 139-50 version of firmware...
I cant update to 139-63 with the method describe, when trying to update the zip file to MM 63 i get a message saying that expected version should be 139-23.
Anyway to upgrade to 139-63 from 139-50? No ota available.
Thanks guys

Actually, according to motorola, the first part is not true. Flashing an ota zip file will void your warranty. That is the official motorola answer. Especially for unreleased software.
You may not like it or agree, but they have stated this many times in the past
I prefer to wait for the final version.

I cannot upgrade to the latest MM. It asks me for the firmware version 139-23.4 and I'm on 23.2 (XT1641, retca). is there another package to upgrade? Thanks.

Any loss of data?
Do I really have to take a backup.. and can we install it from twrp?

Should I be concerned if it's on "Verifying update package..." for well over 30 minutes?

Okay. I can now confirm that it works on XT1644 [US]. I'll upload screenshots later.

All the screenshots I took when my G4 Plus got into Nougat from side loading. So far, no bugs and it's extremely smooth. No lag or performance issues so far.
EDIT: I have more screenshots. If you want em, tell me and I'll post it. These are the last screenshots you'll see of the Stock Rom from me, I'm going to Resurrection Remix.

One thing i noted is that phone is much more snappy afterward. maybe it's because of the cache rebuild that every build do or maybe there is some secret ingredient added in this update.
Very surprised to see another update from AT&T for the G2. I wonder if there's any chance of seeing 5.1.1 or 6.0.

You can't update with root, at least I haven't been able to.
When updating it will just kick you back to the home screen with a message telling you, you're suspected of rooting and updates are not supported for rooted devices.
I also tried the method discribed in http://forum.xda-developers.com/att-g2/general/links-manually-forcing-ota-20c-to-20u-t2828874 to force an update but I was unable to succeed
I'm waiting for dlpkgfile to update
How does one make this file root friendly? Wouldn't mind taking the time to do this.

i think thats the answer for no 5.1.1 i dont see why leave g2 at lollipop if its has bugs.. since they fix the stagefright on 5.1.1. so we need it 5.1.1 to get rid of this bug but aparently with this update theres no need to update to 5.1.1 but does this still have the memory leak bug?

The last command appears to force a package on the phone to start the update process without (or possibly after) a check for root, however when I run the command the nothing appears to happen making me think that the original Lollipop update(30f) either nerfed the command to prevent this kind of thing from happening, or they replaced the package with a new one for the 5.x iterations of Android. so it is a matter of waiting for people smarter than me to find out how to force the updates in the Lollipop update
TL;DR: yup I agree with you

As far as I know you can't unroot a device. The way I'm doing it is reinstalling the original KK, then going trough the process of updating till the lastest update then rooting again.
I do hope someone could come up with way to install the latest update on rooted.
That did come to my mind but I felt it's just too much of a pain going that far back for a patch!

FAQ | Frequently Asked Question
(Please Correct me if i am wrong)
Will i stop recieving OTA Updates after i update?
No, you will still get updates from motorola.
Will This unlock my bootloader? Does this need bootloader to be Unlocked?
If you are Downgrading from soak test to Marshmallow firmware you will need your bootloader to be unlocked to do that.
Rest i dont think youll need unlocked bootloader.
What is The Security patch Details ?
It's First November , you can also check the review video to see.
Is this the Official Update?
Yes this is the Update by motorola.
Will it root my device ?
No it wont!
what about VoLTE support?
How would people who got the soak test ota and updated there phones earlier update to official version of Android 7 ? Is it through new ota?
Can't we just side load there official update as we did with the soak test ota? I mean others who are on soak test build and didn't receive the official update.

Is the thread not clear ? I will update the thread to be more specific.
If you are on soak test currently! Then the only way as far as i know to go to the Official update is by first downgrading to marshmallow and then flashing the New OTA via recovery , you cannot directly flash(sideload) the official ota on the nougat soak test.
That's because the update is for marshmallow devices and the ota checks before installing if the phone is running the latest official marshmallow only then it flashes.
how to root?
Just installed the OTA through sideloading.
So, i couldn't wait until it ACTUALLY gets rolled out to everyone, therefore I used the OTA zip to sideload it.
Initial impression - I was actually surprised by the lack of changes on Nougat. But that's just me having used a Pixel.
Anyways, the Notification dropdown/slide is different, and slightly counter-intuitive than MM. In MM it was easy to turn on or off WiFi/Bluetooth/Data (single tap), whereas in N, you'll need 2 taps. The transitions on the notification shade are liquid-smooth, so :good:
On init, it asked me to reconfigure my SIM, where i found a particularly interesting menu... Emergency contact information... Good stuff, don't know if it was available in MM.
A cool new feature is the fingreprint to lock... Great :good:
The settings have a slightly revamped UI, but not by that much... Still feels a lot like MM.
The app drawer is the same. Was actually stupid of me to expect the Pixel launcher.
Didn't feel any changes in camera (image/video).
Opening the lockscreen is a little laggy using pattern. Opening it through fingerprint is still lightning fast.
App loading & use still the same as MM (Maybe apps need additional updates to support N).
Battery life virtually the same as stock MM.
Oh, PS - Was on stock MM, locked bootloader. Updated to N without data wipe.
Hello, could any early adopter of nougat update for G4 Plus confirm one exciting feature of android 7 (atleast for me) that it works on this phone software.
As of Android 7.0 phone can read 2G/3G/LTE frequency WITHOUT root(Google RIL version 12). Easiest way is to install app Cellmapper(mapping cell towers to map) https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=cellmapper.net.cellmapper
Could anyone run this app(enable "Use new Android 4.2 Cell ID API" in settings) and post screenshot while connected to LTE only(no wifi)? Also, maybe send debug report from settings menu to developer with screenshot.
Thank you very much.

Read my link, a Moto rep already responded today that is NOT.
I have some doubt, pls feel free to help me.
1. Do we get OTA updates after unlocking bootloader (no changes in recovery, system and all), and are we able to install it as normal OTA if we get one.
2. If its possible, then can i stay in mm after downgrading from soak nougat first blur version, untill i recieve official nougat from the company directly and flash it as normal.
Thanks in advance.

Sorry i didnt add credits. The second link(mirror) i gave is the the update that i got. And moreover i confirmed from motorola support and they said it has started to roll out in batches. They have also updated the release notes if you havent seen

I have owned previously Moto G 1st gen and 2nd Gen and in all of them to , you couldnt go from soak test to The official firmware with out unlocking bootloader. And i dont think this will be an exception but you guys can wait for the official release to hit everyone.
I have looked this morning and there where no release notes. I did check the site now is still no notice of upgrade:
https://motorola-global-portal.custhelp.com/app/standalone/country-selector/software-upgrade
I guess this confusion is because of Moto...
There are any news about nougat for XT1641?
Hi, I tried to install it from MM on my 1642 and it gave me an error with signature verification

DON'T upgrade to Nougat by OTA!

This has already discussed in other posts here BUT I continue to see A LOT of people waiting for Nougat OTA like Santa Claus should bring to them... (or, even worse, trying to push it in their phones... )
So, I make this post just to give more visibility to all...
I'll try to write it clear...
Don't update your Z to Nougat by OTA!
Is it clear enough?
Now some explainations...
Over the the common generic motivations (difficulties when not in full stock conditions, risk to brick it during process, OTAs that are the Evil... ), there is a strong one in this case: Nougat OTA for Moto Z (silently...) upgrades your bootloader too, from v. 90.xx to v. 91.xx...
This isn't really needed (Nougat runs flawlessly on v.90.xx too... ) BUT it introduces some tighter rules on what you can and what you can't anymore boot on it, limiting hacking and upgrading (to developed third part ROMs...) possibilities...
One of this rules is that with v. 91.xx bootloader you can't anymore boot to MM ROM!
Considering that as of today it seems that bootloader can't be donwgraded (some have soft/hard bricked their Z trying to downgrade it...), Nougat upgrade by OTA is a one way process.
If you consider that stock Nougat seems to have some bugs and issues (and, as of today, no Xposed available...!) and that some (all?) third part Nougat ROMs requires "MM" (v. 90.xx) bootloader to work, it seems not to be a great idea leave that Motorola upgrades silently your bootloader...
So?
So, at present, the best method (IMHO...) to upgrade to Nougat is that one which is described in OP of this thread: you will have a full stock Nougat BUT with older bootloader and the possibility to easily return to MM or to whatever ROM you want...
I already did nougat via ota for my moto z droid... Does this affect anything? Also how do i flash a factory nougat on my moto z droid if i want to stsrt fresh?

Considering we on the Moto Z droid don't have an unlockable bootloader and/or ability to root I don't see it effecting you negatively, other than an exploit that may be discovered for marshmallow that would allow for root. We are at the mercy of a kind developer taking on the task. I really miss my hotspot without a fee... But I can go back to my Moto X if it is necessary.

I agree with dap... proposed solution can't be used since of unlocked bootloader, BUT if I had a Droid I would have remained sticky to first SW release as long as possible because of the higher probabilities of a flaw to hack and root it...
With Nougat and newer (even more "locked"...) bootloader it will be harder...
those are a lot of steps... is there a way to just hide the nag/update screen that pops up? it keeps wanting to update or ask for a time to update or reminds me to update etc

So, at present, the best method (IMHO...) to upgrade to Nougat is that one which is described in OP of this thread: you will have a full stock Nougat BUT with older bootloader and the possibility to easily return to MM or to whatever ROM you want...

Does the method you linked to even work with the VZW variant? It looks like it used to, but the Verizon stuff is all marked through and I'm not clear on the process.
hmmmfff... I have updated mine using OTA.. now I want to back to MM... but no way to do that...

I read in other thread that bootloader v91 won't work with MM.
Moto Z ( UAE ) no OTA yet
HI,
can anyone suggest which android 7 update is to be used for UAE users and how to install manually ?
How can i disable the OTA Update app opening all the god damn time? I mean seriously, every time i lock the screen and turn it back on, it annoys me by saying i need to update to Android 7, I DON'T ****ING WANT TO! Can someone PLEASE tell me how to disable this?

You can't. The only thing you *can* do is tap the "Later" and then "Done" buttons. That will defer it for another 24 hours since it automatically fills in the phone's current time for the next check.
It's annoying, but it's only once a day.
EDIT: I thought you were referring to the VZW variant. If you're not and your phone is rooted, you might be able to disable or remove "Motorola Update Services". To do so, go to Settings > Apps > select "Show system" from menu (3 dots at top right) > scroll down and tap "Motorola Update Services"
I can't disable it on my VZW unit, but you might be able to. Or maybe you can remove the app via root (though I have no idea if that will cause further problems).
I too can confirm thr disabling motoservice in settings method. But you have to do it everytime you reboot your phone, it does t hurt me doing that.
I found a simple fix, get Titanium Backup and freeze that crap app, done.

Simply use the method linked in OP. It uses retmx sw.
True, I updated via Ota and now I can not install custom roms, will in the future have a solution to this problem? Because we all know that by unlocking the bootloader we lose the warranty, but we do this because we want to have options to install on our devices.
Could any dev have managed to fix this in the future roms?

Which variant do you have? @erfanoabdi suggested in another thread that they might have root figured out for the VZW variant in the next couple of days. No idea if what they're working on will be applicable to the Nougat.

Variants doesn't matter all moto z is using same kernel source (I have Chinese moto z)
Let me explain, I'm trying to port farm-root for moto z
Here's the source : https://github.com/freddierice/farm-root
If anyone knows how to deal with ndk and other Stuffs, can install TWRP with this version of farm-root
But I'm trying to make it easier and here's big barrier called SELinux

Hope it happens. The phone (accidentally?) Downloaded the update and is now asking to install. I'm afraid one day it'll just automatically update on it's own.. I can't seem to find where the system update got downloaded to, otherwise I'd delete it

I need to rollback (Honor 8), HELP!

I have a seemingly stupid but still annoying problem. As many of you know Android 8 + EMUI 8 came out this summer and I have updated my Honor8. Everything works well, even better (especially with regard to the battery) apart from a problem, quite annoying. I have seen that everyone around complains about the same problem, so it is clear that both a build bug and not a local problem.
Basically ... the bluetooth link with the multimedia system of my car doesn't work as it should, while it worked well with the 7.0.
Tracknames, music infos disappears, sometimes it connects regularly, starting the music, sometimes nothing happens, sometimes the music passes from the car speakers to smartphone (!!)... in short, manage the music in the car It has become a big problem!
I tried all possible options; reset pairing, reset bluetooth, clear cache, activate the developer options to control some low-level aspects of bluetooth, and finally installed Bluetooth Auto Connect which also has several advanced options. Nothing works. In the meantime an update of 8.0 has been released (mine is the buiold 521). The update came out in September ... maybe (MAYBE) this update fixes all bluetooth issues (but i don't have any detailed info about). Until today I have not received any updates and normally I check new version regularly every day. At this point I decided to return to Nougat!
And here the adventure begins!
I CANNOT IN ANY WAY do the downgrade.
What I tried:
- through HiSuite. The "back to previous version" option appears random (rarely); normally the program tells me "the system is up to date". Once appeared I tried to run the procedure, but after the decompression it gives me an error "error updating".
- by standard Rollback procedure. Using a microSD and putting the full version of Nougate in the dload folder. The installation starts but stops almost immediately with the same "update cannot be applied" error.
At this point I am desperate. I cannot update Oreo, I can't go back to Nougat and meanwhile the bluetooth still doesn't work with my car. Remember that before Oreo, everything worked very well!
What can I do? Can you help me?
Thank you

Region: EU
Model: FRD-L09
Build: 8.0.0.521 (C432)
Previous Build: don't remember. It was Nougat, and I've upgraded around the first week of September. From that day I haven't received/applied any patch, because nothing appears until now.
This morning I've tried again with HiSuite. As usual it says I'm running the latest version and it doesn't offer any downgrade option .

Finally I've decide to try updating to 8.0.0.562. After a month of tries, fails (damn Huawei and his stupid update system), errors and a lot of other stupid things, I was finally able to update my Honor hoping the latest version will fix all the problems. It was a enormous waste of time (searching around internet)... but in the end I found a method described here: https://forum.xda-developers.com/huawei-p20-pro/help/p20-pro-bricked-t3868085#4And if you go ahead you should find the correct firmware link (on a Russian site). Although, IMHO, failing with the classic method was due to the impossibility or some bugs in the update system, to unpack the update files on sdcard. So the solution seems to be to leave both the zip and the unpacked folder. The problems with bluetooth remain, but I hope that now there is not to be crazy applying next updates. ATTENTION: the method above is NOT valid for rollback! If you try, you'll brick your Honor.
And finally I've taken an important decision... for me this is the last Huawei/honor device. Next time I'll go to another brand, with a serious update system.

your link seems dead or not correct. - edit: link correct, was not working due to my vpn...
I assume he patched a G8+ boot.img with magisk manager.
boot image can be extracted from official Doha firmware found here: https://mirrors.lolinet.com/firmware/moto/doha/official/
manual on how to do this can be found on official magisk manager website.
be aware that when unlocking bootloader your phone will reset to factory settings.
This is what I did. Yes..
Worked great for my G8+. I guess people should just check which stock ROM file they get from lolinet to make sure it's the right one. I say that because, in my case, lolinet list had two files for the Brazilian stock ROM. I went to Settings / About / Version number and downloaded the matching file. Don't know whether the other file would work the same or not. Just didn't want to risk having any issue since G8+ is somewhat new and there's not much info on solving root problems on the Internet.
Hi,
Couple of questions
Does the Bootloader have to be Unlocked to flash the modified Boot image?
Or can I use update option?
Are Motorola releasing unlock numbers for Bootloader now?
Thanks, Carl

Hello, Carl. I guess it's not possible unless there's a flaw in the security. There are some articles on the Internet about that. Google "is-there-a-way-to-root-an-android-phone-without-unlocking-the-bootloader". I can't post URLs yet.
As for Motorola devices, I was able to unlock the bootloader without problems on my G8+, last week. The only caveat, I'm my case, is that I had to wait some days for the unlock bootloader option be available under developer options. It was disabled by default in my G8+. And, yes, they're releasing bootloader unlocking codes.
THANKS!
Have anybody with a rooted device tried to get wide angle camera working in gcam ports?
Thanks.

magisk module debloater and also sdmaid helped with most of the bloatware, the only thing I could not remove was google files but I just deactivated it.
a really weird thing happened with the April 1st update, basically the update started automatically and it failed at 3/6 so I tought I should restart my phone and test it again, but it got stuck in bootloop and I had to reflash a rom with fastboot cmd.
I think that's because I unlocked the bootloader and rooted my phone, cause u lose the right for updates after you do that, but for some reason lenovo/moto update system goes automatically the next second u connect to the internet and fails halfway thru so u have a higher chance to ruin your phone or something, instead of denying the update from the start
so the solution I found was to try and delete "moto update service" app that I can't force stop or disable but I couldnt find it in system/app or system/priv-app, that's because the app name is "3c_ota", so deleting that with SD Maid app worked and the "update system" option in settings is reverted to a sort of default android one that lets you check manually.
Had a similiar issue. I soft bricked my phone (bootloop) and installed a stock rom from an unofficial source. The funny thing is, this version did make like 3 or 4 system upgrades to PPSI.29.65-51 without any issue. But the 1st April updated failed to install. I then flashed the official 1st april stock image with the moto rescue and smart assistant. After that, the official ROM tells me my phone is not allowed to do updates because the security of this phone is compromised and I should contact lenovo support
Those upates are kinda annoying if they don't work, I guess I'll just completey flash the phone every 6-12 months with the moto assistant.
yeah you should always have a backup rom that you can download with moto assistant or from lolinet g8 roms (https://mirrors.lolinet.com/firmware/moto/doha/official/)
I also got the same message saying that my phone is compromised ( unlocked bootloader + rooted) and it won't receive any further updates, but I just deleted the "3c_ota" app (the moto update service) which is bad cause if forces automatic updates the second u connect to internet.
I'm not going to touch any further updates or security patches until android 10, which I will attempt to flash via moto assistant
