Screen on time - Google Pixel XL Real Life Review

It's amazing how much we actually use our phones in a given day, especially when we watch "videos"! Rate this thread to express how many hours of screen-on time you can get on the Google Pixel XL before depleting the battery.
Then, drop a comment if you have anything to add!

I decided to try and push things this morning and used my Pixel XL almost all morning non-stop. I used it to talk on Hangouts/Allo, check mail, facebook, feedly, Flipboard, google news, listen to music, etc. I had 3.7 hours of on screen time and the battery was down to 67%.So far it seems much better than my S7 was

How are people getting this? My screen seems to drain so fast even when I'm just constantly using it to see how much I can get. I barely get 40 minutes of SOT per 10% drain and that's if I'm using it straight through. Brightness kept low too. On wifi or LTE if doesn't matter.

Maybe you got a dud? With millions of these being mass produced there are bound to be bad ones. Maybe yours is that case. Would suck, but it sounds like SOMETHING is wrong. Have you checked your battery stats in Settings to see what's using all your juice?

"Combined APP CPU" takes up 60% in GSAM battery stats. No idea what that means

I finished my day yesterday (day 3 of owning) with 5.7 hrs screen on time and had 22% battery left when plugging in. I hadn't watched any videos but spent alot of time reading, browsing and chatting. I kept my brightness around 1/3 the way to full and never moved it. Adaptive brightness was left on but seems to change very minimally in different lighting conditions. My G3 used to drop to an unbearable dark when in lowlight situations. The Pixel XL 128gb has stayed more bright in lowlight situations than I'd like making it straining to my eyes. I tried nightmode but was a pukey looking orangish red. Not cool. Either way, it seems screen time is best I've had in recent phones. I averaged around 3.7 to 4.2 hrs on my Note 7 but only owned that for 3 weeks and had returned due to it being an incendiary device! KABOOM! So far I'm Pleased with the Pixel XL aside from the lack of lift to wake or double tap to wake. I hate hitting the power button to check notifications.

40 mins screen on for 10% drain ends up being about 6.5 hours of screen on time....don't understand your problem.?

Almost 5 hours screen on time and I was using Waze and listening to Alex Jones pretty much the whole time the screen was on. This is the best better life I have gotten ever.

I'll say your SOT are good, seeing that most of the time you had bad cell signal.

When posting your screen on time could you possibly include your how bright you keep the brightness and if you use adaptive brightness or not. That would help comparisons.

Yesterday I got awesome screen on time.

Ive been really happy with the phone so far. Majority of the time the brightness is between one third and half. Never use auto-adjust.

Over 9 hours! What kind of voodoo magic do you have on your phone!? Is that plain ol' vanilla android? Any kernel?

It's stock Android. I watched a lot of movies that day.

Damn id get a replacement. Im a heavy user and i litteraly charge this once a day and thats in the afternoon. Im on fb google plus. Youtube and i listen to music via bluetooth

I just got through my first full charge and ended up with over 7.5 hours SoT over about 32 hours of use. I didn't get a screenshot because I was trying to push for that 8 hour mark and the phone died...But I'm going to get it next time.

Best battery life I've ever experienced on a phone! Took of our charger this morning at 100% charge and it is 3:13 AM the following morning. Been doing the usual. Taptalking to check for Pixel Root method/. TWRP, YouTube, few photos, downloading apps, texting, few calls, and whatnot.
Still says I have 5 hours left on my battery give our take.

With such bad cell reception for a large part of the time and Chrome(a known battery hog) pretty high on the list as well as a small battery that's pretty good.
And I couldn't help but mention it but.... seriously? Alex Jones? That dude is crazy! Does the Pixel XL come with a free tinfoil hat and straight jacket? LOL Alex Jones HAHAHAHA

Battery Stats Thread - XL edition!

Since the international one X owners have their own thread for battery life, I figured we deserve one too .
If you have a sec, why not post some screenshots of your battery usage/display specifics and describe what your usage is like? Be sure to mention whatever you have done to improve your battery life!
Unfortunately I haven't picked my one x up yet so I cannot contribute, but soon!
Just got mine... Before you ask, yes, I am an at&t employee... So far my battery life seems decent... I will say that yesterday my battery life was awesome... Pulled 20 hours of moderate use before I hit 5%. I'm going to really push it today and I'll report back soon...

One person's "moderate" can be another person's "light." Post screen caps (when possible) when reporting your battery life. Also, without doubt, the display is the number one consumer of battery so you should post a shot of your display on time too.

The screen on time should be posted too, That could be 3 hours of screen time, or 30 minutes.
Rogers HTC One X.
This is my stats after 2nd full charge on the brand new device.
Sorry forgot to take the screen of graph before I started the third charge, but it still shows the usage during 2nd charge..
Edit:
The longer chunks of screen on time were YouTube video playbacks.
This is on my first charge, so things might not be too accurate.

That's fantastic performance. The international version can't even come close. And it'll get better because that's only the second discharge cycle.

Just youtube? Youtube is actually quite draining because of constant loading of data and cpu. 5hrs use with mostly youtube is very impressive battery life. Now please test again with mostly web browsing.

Haha can't promise to do web browsing for that long without some kind of testing toolkit. I'll leave phone on LTE and observe another battery cycle with my regular usage (mixed of browsing, texting, a few calls, and some drawing something...)

any chance you'd post a picture or two of it? I'm curious what the AT&T version ended up looking like.
5 hours of screen on time is pretty epic! I hope this is the standard and not an outlier.
I know the phone has a large display, but it's not the actual display that uses so much power on the international version. It's not entirely clear what exactly "Display" encompasses in the battery stats screen, but the international version can sustain the display for over 10 hours on a single charge. So perhaps GPU usage is also included in the "Display" category.
In any case, over 5 hours screen on time is a heartening statistic.

Nope. Typically it's mid to high 3ish with 12-15ish hours per charge cycle. Some people have done better by deactivating anything that uses power but, to me, that's a useless benchmark. And I'm assuming bebolf's results were using the phone as normal with LTE off. If that's using LTE streaming YouTube than praise the Lord, we have ourselves a miracle.
My international version is getting about 20-30% less time on per charge being used exactly the same as my former i9100. It seems to be improving with cycles but I'm not expecting a miracle. People truly underestimated what Qualcomm was able to do with the S4. Its weakest link though is graphics so we'll have to see how that plays out after you guys have had some time to play with it.

There is another question of performance. If the international has 2 hrs less screen time but able to perform tasks twice faster as a result of having 2 extra cores then its not as straight forward as it first seems. Antutu already showed that the one x is up over 60% faster than the xl. This could translate into faster loading of applications, webpages and applications that takes significantly less time to process. In the end you may not need as much screen time on the one x compared to the xl.

[Q] How is the battery life so far?

I know the phone has only been out for a few days at this point, but how is your battery life so far? I am coming from a Galaxy Note 2 with the massive removable battery. I have two batteries, which is a luxury the HTC One (M8). I consider myself to be a heavy user, and a need a device to fit me. I already ordered the phone with the 30% off code, and am really excited. Would love your feedback. Also, what should be the first thing I do or try once I have this phone in my hands?
Try a game or music. The screen is gorgeous and the sound is great, though some have had grievances with crackling at high volume(I haven't had this issue).
The battery life is pretty impressive on its own I'm at 46% after 12 hours of somewhat regular use. If I want so accustomed to AOSP I'd probably be fine with leaving it stock.
Sent from my HTC6525LVW using Tapatalk
Used it all day and was on it pretty much all day. 7am till 11:45 pm and it was at 39%. Pretty darn impressive.
Wow, sounds great. I listen to a lot of music so this needs to be good. I might just have to invest into an external battery charger, to be on the safe side

Yeah, I would. I had that issue start to come up with my M7 but I listen to everything at highest volume so I'd assumed it was my fault, and I was getting the M8 2 days from that point so I shrugged it off. Now it seems more like it's a fairly regular issue, maybe just a bad batch of speakers.
Try using G Wallet too, OP. Multiple confirmations its working but I'm not seeing any functionality here.
One website I always trust for battery reviews is laptopmag.com ... They use a standardized test across all devices that mimics how I'd normally use a device; it constantly surfs the web on wifi with brightness at around 40% til the battery is completely drained. I find their results to be similar to my own.
I was blown away by their result with the M8 - it lasted a total of over NINE hours! It surpassed even the LG G2 which was close behind.
Surfing over the network is another story, I'd predict the same test to yield a 6-7 hour duration on LTE, which is the same as what I get with my GS3 w/ 3000mah extended battery. This life is perfectly fine for me and I rarely need to plug in before bedtime.
I'd like to know if anyone's experienced stellar battery life of constant web surfing like they're reporting.

pretty heavy usage throughout the day. Looks to be on track to get 6 hours screen on time. I got 5 hours at best on the m7 which was already impressive. I'm definitely happy so far. this. is only the first full drain as well.
I will use strictly lte on my next full drain.
Had about 58% when I hooked my charger up last night after a day of heavy use (for me anyway). Very happy with how well the batter is doing so far!

I took back last night and Verizon employees agreed the top speaker sounded awful and different from floor model. swapped out with a new one no problem and sounds much better although still not perfect but doesn't do on every song like old one just a select few. I think its just those parts of the music. boy I need viper audio!!
Impressed
I turned mine on for the first time yesterday at around 1PM, CONSTANT heavy use through 8 PM or so. I left it on over night assuming it would die as my old SG3 would die on a full batter within 5 hours because I have terrible service in my house, woke up to 21%. Did my usual checking of emails etc for a few minutes. It's crazy to not see the battery dropping as I use it. Impressive to say the least. Now if I can just figure out what setting carried over that is preventing the LED from working but that is noted in a different thread.
Edit: Forgot to mention current time / percentage: 9AM 15% Battery
-T
Ended yesterday with 62% battery, 2.5 hours on screen time! Not bad!
I'm absolutely thrilled with the battery life of this phone! Thing is, though, I upgraded from a VZW Galaxy Nexus. I'm pretty sure any current-gen phone would have given me a similar reaction.

[Q] Battery

Hi All
I'm set with money ready to buy the Nexus 5 ( 32 GB ) or Z1 Compact
And I wonder how well the battery of the N5 performs in real life
Because...when I buy the N5 I don't plan to leave it at 2.26Ghz...in fact I even plan to underclock it to 1.7Ghz ( Because Xperia Z has a 5" and is clocked at an even lower speed and still performs well )
And I'm a light user...who never or rarely uses Wi-FI and am always on 2g ( I never use 4G or 3G ) and always on 5-10% Brightness I also plan to remove all bloatware ( except Google Now ) my phone usually sits on bed and I only get it out to watch some 720p Vids then it rests again
Could I get a day or two out of it and is the "Camera Draining the battery issue" fixed on the 4.4.2 Update?
and finally i just wonder up to now why Z1c gets higher scores than N5 I mean N5 is clocked at higher speeds could this be the effect of Thermal Throttling
Thanks alot :good:

Well, nexus 5 will give you a day backup easily according to your usage
The camera bug is not yet fixed, but there are rumors for 4.4.3 update which gonna fix it and gonna release soon
You need to fairly choose between fast updates(nexus and gpe series) or more hardware features (all other smartphone)
If you are interested in rooting and customizing stuff, then you will get plenty of those in nexus 5
Even my usage is similar like you, I use 3G, I do get one day battery backup
I hope it helps you
Sent from my Nexus 5 using Tapatalk
I'm not 100% sure on the compacts specs but my friend has the Z1. It's exactly the same processor and clock speed. Apart from the camera is awesome and it's waterproof. But u get a crappy sony ui. And Sony updates (which to be fair it has just received 4.4.2) but in my past experience of owning Sony's as soon as their next phone is released they forget about the previous.
The nexus on the other hand is far smoother and faster to use and WILL get all the latest Android releases first and always. And no bloatware. Just fast smooth simple Android
I was deciding between the two before I got my Nexus, and to be fair i don't think I'd have been disappointed in either.
And yes you can easily get 2 days out of the nexus.
Sent from my Nexus 5 using Tapatalk
Ahh because I was a bit skeptical since I checked the GSMarena website and battery endurance was at 40H and Z1c is like 65H
How about the overheating issues?

Most Google Now functions require internet connectivity. I think reminders work without one.
Sent from my Nexus 5 using Tapatalk
From what you describe as your usage I can see it lasting a day no problem, perhaps 36 hours, maybe more if you let the battery go down far. My Nexus 5 typically burns from 100% to 70% over 10 hours from when I leave to when i get back from work, and thats on 4G/3G with decent to fair signal, bluetooth on, wifi on, and brightness all the way up, with texting on and off through the day. With minimum texting once I made it around 85-88%, little over 1% an hour.
That's great to know since I even plan to Underclock the phone and leave the other connection options off at most times
As for Google Now without net would it still work or just show "Cannot Reach Google at the moment"

I would say most people running on stock everything will NOT get the stats you're getting.
About 3-4 SOT is about average I would think, and that is with brightness at a lower setting. Don't give users a false sense of security, as your stats are far from the norm...

3-4 SoT hours is already more than most phones could hope for.
6-8 hours SoT is achievable on stock, with lighter usage and mostly WiFi. I wouldn't say it's misleading to expect 6 hours SoT as that seems to be what most users on here are settling down with.
Edit for obligatory proof: Take today for instance, 3 hours SoT with 54% battery remaining. Heavy data usage and loss of signal included. Stock and unrooted.

It shows what is possible. And the battery life thread can show anyone how to do it. Its not hard. Turn stuff off. Toggle it on when you actually truly need it. It isn't that inconvenient.
Yes, you are right about the average times ...the problem is some, like a person in this thread we all should know, complain and complain and complain about their 3 hours screen time. Meanwhile, everything is on, they're gaming, using auto brightness in the sunshine...etc...etc...
As you said, 3 to 4 SOT is average I'd say. If that disappoints anyone....do something about it....there's a battery thread full of help....or sell the phone and buy one with a huge battery that can handle everything on and give you more hours.

That's true, on wifi, the battery life really shines. Out in the real world, with varying signal strength, I would put the average around 3-4 SOT with everything on however.

Yes, there are many tweaks that can be done to improve battery life, but stock for stock, it is only average in my opinion.

battery

Where is the obligatory battery thread? So far, day one. Just under 2 hours sot and 53% left. Not great. Android OS showing 350mah usage which is horrible so I'm hoping it was just syncing and stuff

Yeah, that's probably all it was. After I synced everything and set up my phone,I recharged it. Now I'm sitting at 50% with 3hrs SOT and I was playing Eternium: Mage and Minions for about 1:15hrs of that. Pretty impressed, personally, compared to my N5X.

I think there was a lot of drama last year though and s7 had Same issue with excessive OS usage
Coming from 2013 Nexus 5 as my daily driver where 2hrs of Screen time meant battery is at 4%.
I should be fine when my Pixel arrives tomorrow.
Felt spoiled with Note 7 , although that affair didn't last long.*

Off the charger 3 hours, Android OS at 200mah. Grr
Not particularly impressed with battery here - 37 minutes of SOT on 6 hours off charge and I'm at 71%. WhatsApp Web is running but I haven't done anything intensive.
I'm hoping the battery life picks up on mine over the next few days. 5 hours off charge with a bit of app setup (just configuration, the installs were already done) and about half an hour of photography left the phone at 50%.
I'll give it a little bit more time to settle before I panic and return it for a Pixel XL

This is a very important thread and please all report truthfully. It doesn't do anyone any good when there rouge posts come in with 6 hrs SOT with 20% left. I am on the fence between the Pixel and the XL I was pretty sure the battery life would be suspect with the regular Pixel. Pretty much the same thing that happened with the Nexus 5X and the 6P. 6P was much better. Keep the posts coming please.

I would like to see some screen shots of battery life after a week of use. One day doesn't make the battery life. The battery life is what will be the deciding factor for me. I have the S7 and I'm happy but I'm also a phone hore and I always want the latest and greatest. I ordered the phone from Google and it's not expected until Thanksgiving, but if I hear great things over the next few weeks, I made get it on my Verizon account.

Haha, me too Gonna give it a week or so. The battery and the software need time to settle in I think. If it doesn't work, out Pixel XL here we come!
Not encouraging....

What is a good SOT? I am getting 5-6 hours and that's way better than my 6P (3-4 hours) but people here are implying thats not very good? I am very impressed with my battery, I am an extremely heavy user and would never have expected 5.32 hours on this last charge with wifi on, and also location and Bluetooth on always.

Is that straight through, or over a day? I can get 6 hours SOT if I'm going straight through like on Netflix.
That's over a day, I plugged in with 5℅ left and I didn't charge it overnight but used it heavy last night and this morning...only dropped 1℅ overnight

Maybe has to do with syncing? See if there are any syncing errors in Settings>Accounts. In any case, try a reboot.

I am at 140 mah after 4hrs since near full charge. So lining up to be ~500 mah after 12-14 hours.
My screen on time is 2.5hrs at 383 mah so far.
Sitting at 68 % battery level.

High accuracy on.
Google assistant on. (Voice recognition on and from any screen with screen off)
Auto brightness - Bar half way.
Bluetooth on.
NFC on.
Google apps all on auto sync too.
Fbook, insta, snapchat, messenger, Whatsapp, Twitter....all installed.
Google location reporting off.
Wireless and Bluetooth scanning off.
Better than my previous S7. Way better than previous to that 5X.

Light use endurance

Once in a while, when your significant other yells at you, you might use your phone a bit less. Rate this thread to express how the Google Pixel 2 XL's battery performs under light use. A higher rating indicates that the device goes a long time when you're using the phone sparingly: no gaming or video/audio streaming, light web browsing, some calling and texts, etc.
Then, drop a comment if you have anything to add!
Out and about (LTE/cell service only) - 13%/hour
At home on Wifi - 6-7%/hour
21h with 4h screen on, 40% left
With what I would consider light usage (email, web browsing, messaging, lots of YouTube) I have really been impressed with the battery life! Over 8hrs screen on time with my first few cycles so far. Based on this, I'm guessing that even with heavier usage (games, etc.) that I would still be pretty happy with the longevity. With very similar usage I was getting around 4-5hrs SOT on my original Pixel XL and was happy with it. Interested to hear how the battery has been for others as well.
I've been very happy. Last night I forgot to charge so I woke up with 48% battery. I plugged in for 25 minutes while getting ready for work. Left the house with 87%. Now, 9 hours later, I have had 2 hours screen on time of mixed wifi/LTE, browsing, email, Facebook, texting, a few pictures and a little YouTube. 20% brightness. Location set to high accuracy, Now Playing turned on, AOD off, Google account sync on. I am at 65%. That's a drain of 22%. Under the same conditions and usage my Nexus 5X would have drained over 40%.
This is the first smartphone I've had (I've had a Nexus One, Galaxy SII, Nexus 5, Nexus 5X and now Pixel 2 XL) that I can say that the battery life is GREAT.

This phone is ridiculous. I haven't charged it since Monday...
I won't pretend I'm a "heavy usage" person with my phone. But I've never been able to get 2 full days of usage from any of my previous phones. Most of them barely lasted 24 hours. This one is going to reach 48+ hours, easy.
I work from home full time so I'm connected to my home wifi almost all the time, which helps. I get out of the house a total of 2-3 hours a day to walk the dog, go to the gym, or meet clients for lunch. So during that time it's on full LTE with no wifi. I tend to use the phone for 2-3 client calls per day (30-60 minutes each while paired with my bluetooth headphones), listening to music at the gym (~60 minutes while paired with my bluetooth headphones), some light usage of social networking apps and Youtube videos throughout the day.
I know battery life consists of a large amount of factors but it's safe to say that with the same usage, this phone outlasts all my previous phones by at least 1.5x. It's fantastic.
Battery life sucks now compared to pre-February security patch.
Light endurance usage: 15% brightness w/auto brightness off just browsing, Facebook and a little texting on wifi. That's no games, Bluetooth off, Location on high accuracy but not doing much (ie no Maps navigation), no video, no music, no camera, no phone calls etc.
Pre February security update:
Screen on: ~10%/hr
Stand by: ~0.3333%/hr
Best battery life: 9 hours SOT over 1 day, 16 hours off the charger
Now (after February and March security updates):
Screen on: ~15%/hr
Stand by: ~0.5%/hr
Best battery life: 6 hours SOT over 1 day off the charger
Stand by battery drain up like 60% and SOT battery drain up like 50%. Very disappointing for a phone that is only 5 months old. If I break it down to a per mAh it's now no better than my Nexus 5X.
After first charge I am getting 2%/h standby drain, hope things will improve
SOT and idle drain still holding strong for my usage patterns. April update + root + Flash kernel. Not a social media user, and don't use many power/ram intensive apps :good:

just went 1 day 20 hours with 4 hours SOT and 20% left.
Data or wifi always on. Bluetooth and gps always on
No one listens to music offline only anymore ?
What is the battery consumption e.g. with PowerAMP (or similar players) and listening to music for several hours like in battery % ?
Thanks
Not me. I stream my music and play over Bluetooth. But for reference, the Nexus 6P was rated at 100 hours. So I doubt the Pixel 2 XL would be any worse.

Mine is just as bad now too. For the first 3 months the same time would leave me with almost 50% left.

I listen to music offline. For the first several months of having the phone I could play over Bluetooth and I'd use about 7% per hour. Playing over a wired connection used 4% per hour. Now it's like 8% per hour over a wired connection and 12% per hour over Bluetooth. Damn monthly updates.

Compared to what it was for the 1st 3 months, yeah, that's bad. Maybe he never experienced how good battery life was before several of the updates so he doesn't really have a basis for comparison. Like I said, with the same time off the charger and screen on time I have about the same 20% battery left as well but for the first few months that same off the charger and screen on time left me with about 50% left. Draining almost 30% battery for the same use just a few months later is a big deal. Oh, and that's after trying a factory reset which at first (about a half a day) seemed like it helped but quickly showed that it didn't help at all.
What you were getting for the first three months was remarkable for sure but wasn't what everyone gets. Like a lot of things battery life has a bell curve and you were just on the extreme right of it. Now you're "only" getting what the majority, middle part of the bell is getting and unhappy with it. Still doesn't mean it's bad. Now it's just average.
