Google daydream - Samsung Galaxy S7 Questions and Answers

Hi everyone,
I am using the Gear VR with my phone but for sure it lacks some features. As I see the google daydream is much interesting and I would love to try it/have the headset when iz comes out. What worries me now is if our devices (Exynos) will be supported for the daydream.
What are your toughts on this, do you think we will be able to use it?

The Pixel/XL are the first Daydream ready phones. Going by that, I assume that means that no phones before them are compatible.
Sent from my SM-G930T using Tapatalk

It's true but I'm also curious if it is able to work at least partially. E.g. play 3D video.

The google phones are the first which are officially daydream ready, but there are other earlier phones which are earlier produced and confirmed to be daydream ready like the ZTE Axon 7 and Asus Znefone 3 Deluxe. What about that fact?
Also I do not see anything better in the Pixel phones (hardware) (I have read somewhere that it has some additional sensors but I do not see them on GSMArena) which would limit our devices, so if it is just software it will be for sure accessable maybe via root if no official support is granted.

NOTE III has built in ANT+ support! (Breaking News so to say:)

I believe this is an important fact, however for some reason, there was no mention of this in any of Samsung's stage intros, news reports, or even spec sheets and even any Note 3 reviews.
How can such a big company with an enormous marketing department fail so miserably.
Its is a far more useful feature that the infrared which is mentioned. Also in the current days its even way more practical than the smart-watch they made (which in all honesty has not real life practical use if you have a phone and a BT headset. And without a phone it cant even function on its own).
Anyway it is good (now confirmed) news, not matter the blunder, That Note 3 does in-fact support ANT+
http://www.thisisant.com/news/ant-has-been-integrated-in-samsung-galaxy-note-3
I personally only realized it when and end user reported it in a forum which I follow.
Why they (Samsung) should play this so lowkey I will never understand. I am almost certain that this is going to be news to a lot of the people who worked on the GN3. And its not even funny.
So many sports/fitness people can make good use of it.
It seems to be working on all versions of Note 3 (SD800 I was sure, but a used reported that his equinox also has ANT+). I have to confess that this later part still has me wondering, as it is know that the Snapdragon has had integrated ANT on its chips for a long time (its not something that Samsung added by itself, hence you have it on the Sony Z Ultra also and if rumors are right then the S4 will support it with the next firmware upgrade), but I never heard (till this day) of an equinox that did support this. Doesn't really make sense. You can do a search on google with SD/qualcomm and ANT and you will return positive results. Qualcomm is a part of the alliance. How ever if you do the same for equinoxx you wont find any thing, not a single thing!.
All in all I am very happy. As I dont have to trash my Wahoo speed and cadence sensor. Just to buy a BTLE version of this, to which the android support is still shady and continues to disconnect according to current users. Also very few apps have BTLE enabled for android (As they really waisted time getting here). I think officially so far, only Runtastic pro has in integrated.
However a lot of apps have ANT+ support, as that has been with android since the (Sony Xperia pioneered) 2011 days. If you have problems connecting your ANT device to Note 3, then try this universal connection manager: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.iforpowell.android.ipantman it works with any ANT sports app, not just the developers own. Also lets multiple apps use data from the same ANT device. Basically a must have!
There are very many sensors to choose from, all now compatible with the GN3: http://www.thisisant.com/directory you can filter at the side.
A little background on ANT (as I can see from the replies, that a lot of people are like "ok, but what is ANT?"):
For those that are new to this. ANT+ is a wireless protocol that is similar to Bluetooth, actually more like Bluetooth LE. It is usually found on sport monitors/sensors like a heart rate sensor and is used mostly to transfer information to a reviver/logger, like a "bike computer" (things like speed, cadence, power, pulse, etc).
ANT+ has a wide list of compatible equipment (as its older than BTLE). Formally you needed to buy an expensive receiver/computer (like Garmin) for $400. Now you can use your phone to do this for free and even do it better (as the phones can do much more and has many options for apps/customization.). Also you can simultaneously navigate a map, take calls, listen to music, etc. All-in-one.
See these for any example of ANT+ compatible Android app: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.strava or https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.endomondo.android both of which, as you can see are very popular. Most of this really became popular with the Sony Xperia Active, which is water, dust and damage proof, so people didn't mind mounting it on their bikes.
Basically you dont need ant to use these apps. The built in GPS on these phone can do wonders (tell you speed, elevation, position). But if you want even more detail and also you wan these details to be more precise, then that is where these sensors come into play.
Ok. Now I know some people might have the feeling, that they have been "living under a cave". Don't feel bad. I too didn't know anything about all this about a year ago. That was when I dusted off my bike in the cellar. As I was getting too fat

So weird: If you do a search for Note 3 and ANT+ on google then all you get is the Sept 5th report from thisisant.com site that I linked and few tech news channels that echoed it the same day or the next. That is all.
So you have Qualcomm then, right? That confirms my supervision.

I also read most reviews out there about the Note III and none of then mentioned anything about it.

I personally only realized it when and end user reported it in a forum which I follow, that he revived his Note 3 and it paired with his ANT+ device.
Why should the play this on low-key, it a more important feature that a lot of other things that are published.
So many sports/fitness people can make good use of it.
I suspect that it might be limited to one version only, that is either Exynos or Qualcomm. Still looking for specifics, maybe someone can shed some light on this.
(I think Qualcomm is the winner here too?? as those have had this feature in Sony Ericsson Xperia and Motorola in the past)

You have N9000? OR you read it somewhere?
I never saw anything indicate that Exynos eve had/has ANT support.
thanks this is really good news for me.. I just want some more information as to which version has the ant+ support. I just sold my wahoo rflkt and bluesc. I replaced it with a garmin edge 500 and was thinking about getting the footpod for running so this will be great if I don't need a key. This was one of the biggest problems for me switching to android that I had to switch out all my sensors because they aren't supported yet.
I emailed them via thisisant page asking which variants had ant and they said all variants. This was a week ago. I have N900T.

That is exactly the story of my life. I had to buy a stupid OTG cable and mini USB ant dongle. All which made it impossible to put the note in the mount that I had.
Also heart rate monitor is normal bluetooth which only lasted 4 weeks (Ant would last 6 months).
So far it seems that N9005 is 100% confirmed. Also this is what makes sense (looking at the chip manufacturer).
I am yet to see any info on N9000.
EDIT: Randpost (post above this one) got an email from THISISANT clamming that all versions support ANT+. This would even better news if its true. Lets hope we see more confirmation.

Sorry Willcor, but you have some stuff mixed up.
Polar doesn't have anything that is ANT+ compatible. The have either Bluetooth or thier own "WIND" system.
Anything that has ANT+ written on it and is a sensor of some sort should be compatible with Note III.
Here is a comprehensive list of ANT+ sensors. Just fillter at the side, for what you want (eg cycling).
http://www.thisisant.com/directory
ANT+ is in this way different from BT. If you have say Endomondo app or Strava (or many other) apps from appstore then no mater what ANT HRM you use, it will work. ITs not connecting directly to the app, but rather to the ANT service on android which is universal.
Ray Maker of DC Rainmaker on Twitter reports ANT+ is coming to the Samsung Galaxy S4 through an October Firmware update and will be supported on all flagship devices going into the future

"We will support ANT+ in the Galaxy S4 in a firmware update coming in October" - Samsung (at the ANT+ Symposium)

Hell, got full set of ANT+ device and bougut a BTLE HR for note3... complete fail
And the saddest part for you wm2001 is that BTLE support is still veru buggy (no reconnect after disconnect) and most of the sports app dont yet support it. I think so far only runtastic and ipbike.

Since the ANT Radio Service is unified across all phones with ANT including the Sony Xperia line I'd say there's a decent number of good reviews on it so far, but let's see what the Note 3 people say for awhile.

anyway, thank you for your reply.!!

Galaxy S7

I am planning to get SGS7, NOT Edge version. I kinda hate it actually. HEre is my question. Is bootloader unlocked ? Cause I can't live without my CM13. And if So May be you guys can recommend Snapdragon 820 based Phone that can run homebrew roms. Right now I am on OP2 and I simply can't handle it anymore after 5 minutes in any game phone slowing down to around 10 FPS, unplayable condition.
Thank you in advance.
The bootloader is currently not unlockable on the Snapdragon 820 version. On the Exynos version, root and (I think) TWRP is available, but definitely no CM support.
Bottom line, this isn't the device for you if you want CM13

Thank you very much for your answer. I also looking into upcoming HTC M10 and LG G5, what do you know / think of them ?
Thank you once again !
Check the Cyanogenmod website to see if your (future) device is supported by CM.
Currently the S7 (Edge) are not supported, but that's just a matter of time.
Galaxy S7 has so far the best camera ever Samsung has introduced. Being Water-resistant is an additional advantage for that people like it, awesome battery and Gear VR system as well. who use a costly phone like a crap.

Does the S8/S8+ have MirrorLink?

This is important to me. I have a Mercedes Benz CLA45 AMG and am frustrated MirrorLink would never work with my HTC 10. I have read that MirrorLink is really picky on the version being ran on the phone vs what is on the vehicle but it is a PIA to even troubleshoot. Hoping the issue is with connectivity is my current device and am anxious to move to the S8+. That will be one of the first things I test. I'll report back to see if any one updates. I believe TMobile devices may land a day or so early.

NICE
Mostly google maps and spotify
And thanks for getting back with it
I wish my cars had it ('15 pathfinder, '15 corvette and '14 ML350) Wouldn't mind sending the image to my screen.
Had the Galaxy S8 for a few days now and to my surprise, I can confirm that it does have MirrorLink! I bought it thinking it didn't.
My car has a Sony XAV-602BT double-din headunit so I will try this out shortly and report back!
Yeah it does have, here's even screenshot of function
Bad news...
So I tried my Galaxy S8 on my Sony XAX-602BT and MirrorLink does not work
My head unit flickers for a split second as if it's about to work and then nothing. The headunit just says to connect a supported device. I've tried numerous ways of connecting it with different cables, switching the headunit of then connecting and vice versa but same result. The S8 registers as being connected via MirrorLink though.
It's not an issue with the headunit as this works with my two previous phones, my Xperia Z3 and Xperia Z albeit a buggy experience.
I've done some research and it seems to be because MirrorLink 1.1 only letting you use certain apps which have the right certificates.... Problem is, there are hardly any useful MirrorLink certified apps since it's such a niche thing to have!
On my two previous phones MirrorLink would work but it would just mirror whatever is on the screen which was useful when it actually worked... I've always found MirrorLink to be buggy at best: constant disconnects, overheating phone, audio drops, battery not charging, screen freezing etc.
My advice: If you want the S8 or the S8+ then go for it as they are amazing phones. Upgrade your headunit to one that supports Android Auto as that does work reliably and will have much more support than MirrorLink since Google are backing it.
Did anyone try the LG mirrorlink app with S8? I can't get it to work because it recognizes the samsung phone.
It was fine on S7 and it offers full screen mirroring even when driving.
Samsung Galaxy S8 + Suzuki Vitara with Mirrorlink, it does work. You need to have mirrorlink compatible apps installed.

I've the same matter. Mirrorlink confirm that my S8 and my car Volkswagen are compatible but I'm not able to link my S8 to my VW !?
Android auto was installed on my cell.
Mirrorlink does not work on rooted devices

you need to order by yourself
No matter now !
Hi,
My matter between my Galaxy S8 and my car with Mirrolink is now ok
I just use another cable....
I don't know why. I know with Apple if you have a cable from another brand, you should have some matter. But with Samsung, I'm very surprise !
Thanks all

Has anyone started to work on ROM for this phone, looking at the spec of this phone looks promising, it has a large battery capacity which is great but look at battery test for this phone it looks like stock software is not optimized, so just wondering if the community is willing to help optimize or any advise

the review of low configuration umidigi S2 you can see on Youtube
I've got the regular S2 for a couple of weeks now. It's a good phone with some downsides. Camera is not fantastic but good enough for everyday stuff. If you want amazing photos buy a flagship. Proximity sensor doesn't turn off screen properly while in a call, maybe fixed in future version. One of the major networks in Germany does not work for mobile data in most cases (O2 and Eplus joined and the phone can't handle the "data roaming").
Tech support is non existant. They will point you to their half chinese forums with barely any members that is spammed with press releases. Posting takes dozens of "money" that you must unlock with posts. Very unprofessional but maybe expected for such a relatively small company. There are no service addresses for repairs and the accessories market for that phone is very very limited. Barely any cases or screen protectors out there. If you break anything on this phone expect to get a new one. I have not tried yet but to get replacement parts for this seems near impossible at this point.
Other than that, screen is great for the resolution. Battery life is absolutely brilliant. I can get through a full day with using <40% battery and it lasts easily 3+ days on pure standby.
Wifi has become much better I think after the last firmware update. They are updating the phone but I wonder for how long. This is not a manufacturer that can or wants to support all of it's devices like big ones do.
Materials are good, maybe a bit slippery in the hands but all microblasted aluminium phones are like that.
Screen has a <1mm bezel between the side of the phone and the display surface but I don't care about that.
Build, to me, feels very good. Fingerprint sensor works well and fast. Android is 6.0.1 but I hope they will have an update to 7 or 8 at some point.
I don't care about benchmarks so I can't talk about that, my apps work well. Video streaming is fluid. No idea about 3D gaming I don't use my phone for that.
For that price it's a great phone imho.
Have just pre-ordered this device. Will wait to see what comes, hopefully able to unlock the bootloader and remove any bloatware that comes pre-installed.
It exist a custom rom for s2? I'd like
It has poor camera, other things are very good
What kind of custom could fix in it? Paranoid android?

I just tried that and while the recovery installs my phone wouldn't boot afterwards. Maybe because I have the main partition encrypted but maybe for another reason.
Also for me the screen was flipped 180 degrees probably due to a backwards display in this phone.

Still early days I wouldn't personally try it but I'm sure in time this phone will get Dev support , I had some feed back from umi on there FB page regarding update to 7/8 they said there waiting on MediaTek's to release source or sdk as this P20 chip was built around Android 6 at the time and the P25 around 7 that's why pro ships with 7 that's what they said , also mentioned an update coming with a week but more likely bug patch still on Jan 2017 security , not the best look on a 2017 phone 2015 os

Hi
Please check and correct me If I am wrong. According to UMI claimed that the first batch of S2 v1 come with non up gradable processor and hence, you can only maintain at Marshmallow version ie. Android 6 while S2 v2 (so called 2nd batch) can be upgraded to Android 7 (no idea to Android 8???). So guys, please check directly with UMI on this issue. I am thinking of getting the S2 Pro but would like UMI to confirm whether same issue with S2 v1 ???? Cheer s -

Below is the info extracted from Umidigi Forum lately .......
"Quote" They said the first batch of S2 will keep on Android 6 (there will be some updates, but nothing of update to Android 7). So the second batch of S2 and the S2 Pro will come with UMI OS Android 7. Anybody received handset with android 7.0 what date are the V2 or is that just referring to the Pro , mine is due 23/11 ordered 16/11 wondered if it will be V2 model with 7.0. Seems odd 2017 handset shipping with 2015 software .... Phone i received week ago got Android 6 so its V1. That will not work on the first v1 of Umidigi S2 sadly. It's made for MT6757D (S2 v2).
How ever there are phones out there already with MT6757 (Not MT6757D) will be on Android 7.0. "Unquote"
Hope this clear some of your thoughts. Thank you.

S2 version 1 coming with Android 6 and can't be updated to higher android version.
S2 version 2 will be coming with Umidigi OS based on Android 7. Further updates are not confirmed.
S2 pro is coming with Umidigi OS based on Android 7. Further updates are not confirmed.

App to connect screenshots in one longer

Is there any screenshot app that woarks on non rooted pixel 2 equivalent to scrollshot on samsung or huawei devices?

I've used Stitchcraft from the Google Play Store for this which usually produces an acceptable result. They have a free version with ads if you want to try it out.

All the apps I've found suck hard. Even if you're rooted, it takes way too many steps to get a decent scroll shot where you manually stitch together multiple screen shots. IMO, Prepare to be disappointed until Android finally builds this into the stock software.
