All thanks to him!
Works on any 7.0+ ROM with Google App version 6.5+
Just remember to clear data from your Google app after you make your build prop edits. Reboot and then you'll see Google Assistant
I'm not responsible if your phone blows up blah blah blah...

Like i asked in the other thread, have you tried reverting the build prop to see what happens? I wonder if it would stick or revert back to the old Google settings.
[edit] I'm going to give a crack out of using Magisk, I'm running Pure Nexus so i will report back.
Try it and bootloop..

can confirm working, (using October update on a 5x) and 6.5.35 use the zips and flash them like instructed in the video the manual first method doesn't work
Reverting back from Pixel to Nexus 5X im build.prop works just till the reboot. Then it can work just for one shot or two if lucky after having reboot done. Then it does not. At least on mine. Had to move from Czech to English anyway.

You can read up on magisk here
Basically magisk allows you to modify /system without actually modifying /system.
My mod just adds the two properties
Code:
ro.product.model=Pixel
ro.opa.eligible_device=true
to your build.prop to enable Google Assistant.
Has Google assistant stuck on for anyone else after a few reboots?
I decided to revert the ro.device line back to Nexus 5X and it's still there!? how cool!?!
Nice. I only have one issue. Google assisted always wants to relearn my voice. For that reason i am not able to use the OK Google command.

You need to wipe and disable Google app
did hotspot stop working for anyone after the changes?
You can get Google Assistant in simple steps
1 -> Xposed { you need to install Xposed framework in your device }
2 -> Install Updated AndroidN-ify
3 -> Install latest Google App
Credit's
@MrWasdennnoch
@Xposed
@apkmirror
@Google Inc.
I've done all that on my Shield Tablet. But I still just get Google Now instead of Assistant.

i think this is incomplete, you need to change your build.prop add or modify below lines for value,
ro.product.model=Pixel XL ro.opa.eligible_device=true
after that reboot and have widget as Nova
activities, Google aap, one with mic icon.
if didn't work, wipe data for googly app.
mine is working on multiply devices g3/ Motorola x style

Thank you sir.
This is the official thread for google assistant app on our beloved Xperia L. We'll be talking of how to run it on our device, I'm other words a thread with all discussions for Google Assistant.
How many were able to run on your devices AFAIK it requires stock MM to run. I suppose someone will help us all to clearly run this on our phone.
That's the completely wrong place to post it, you could post it in Q&A of Xperia L!
You posted in the wrong forum I guess. This thread must belong to General or Q&A.
That aside, I was able to get assistant working on 7.1.

Change the following in build.prop
Code:
ro.product.model=Xperia L -> ro.product.model=Pixel XL
ro.product.brand=Sony -> ro.product.brand=Google
ro.product.name=C2105 -> ro.product.name=Pixel XL
ro.product.device=taoshan -> ro.product.device=marlin
Then below "ro.product.board=qcom", I added
Code:
ro.opa.eligible_device=true
Then force stop and wipe all data of Google and Google Play Services. Reboot, and launch Google and select your backup account. When you launch google, it'll ask you to use assistant. Done
Also, Assistant will keep asking you to retrain you voice. You can work around that using ChopAssistant.
That's it. Assistant should work now.
Note: Many threads ask you to only change/add
Code:
ro.product.model=Xperia L -> ro.product.model=Pixel XL
ro.opa.eligible_device=true
However, it didn't work for me. So I changed a few other fields too and it did show up after that.
Can someone please explain to me what this "assistant" is?

It's a new feature "exclusive" to Pixel devices. It's like Siri/Cortana made by Google and features a sort of AI/machine learning. Google up "Google Assistant".

Probably not. It needs to see your phone as a Pixel Device to work. You'll get Now on Tap/Screen search if you have the original values in the respective fields.

Okay thanks.What if I update the ROM? Do I need to revert back to Xperia L in the build.prop to flash an updated ROM? Or keeping Pixel XL will be fine?

Not sure if it'd mess up something like CM Nightlies but if flashing a new ROM in recovery, it shouldn't matter I guess. You will need to re-edit the build.prop after flashing/updating the ROM. Try it yourself and let us know if you can

No, would probably conflict with your already installed Gapps.
For Google assistant there are other other solutions.
This app if you're on Nougat
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.trivisionzero.getassistant
For Marshmallow there is a Xposed module.
Btw, this thread should have been posted in "guides, news & discussion", or "Q&A".
Not in ROMs, kernels....
All the open gapps does is add to the build.prop to allow for Google Assistant.
On Nougat if you add ro.opa.eligible_device=true to the build.prop it will enable Google Assistant. It does not conflict with anything.

Guessing that you need to be rooted for this to work though?
If so, that will cause issues with Android Pay etc, so it may not be feasible.

Actually nope, you don't need root to install open gapps. You need TWRP though.

Moved here, as this doesn't go in the Development Section, read the Forum Rules on posting.
Adding the line to build.prop enabled Assistant on my device running Nougat.
