I recently purchased a Samsung Focus from the US.
How do I unlock the device so that I can use it in my home network ?
I searched the forums and the only solution seems to buy unlock code from a eBay seller.
Is there any other better/cheaper alternative ?
Also what will this ChevronWP7 tool do ? Its just to unlock so that I can install external apps not via the Microsoft Marketplace ?
I am a .NET developer and would like to explore the WP7 features and build few apps.
So in that case is it recommended that I apply the ChevronWP7 patch ?

Did you pay full price for the Phone? i think at&t should provide it for free, unless its a Exclusive device, then you need to go Ebay

Just contact AT&T and ask for the code,,,they will give it to you free

The phone must be ATT branded, otherwise it may not be in their database.
You need the IMEI of the phone, press *#06# and it will display. You also need to have their service for over 90 days (Go Phone is fine.) When asked for a reason tell them your going abroad (I say England or China) and want to use a local sim card. The process can take awhile. You likely need a non ATT sim card to enter the code.

yes the phone is AT&T branded. But I haven't used their services.

If your a new to them then no, you need to wait 90 days. If you have been an active customer over 90 days they will give you one unlock code a year. You do not need to have used that phone with them 90 days to get the code, its just that you need to be a customer for at least 90 days.
Its cheaper not to take a contract and just go with an eBay code if you plan to use another service.

my relative in the US has been a using a iPhone for a long time from AT&T with contract. So in that case I should be able to get a unlock code from AT&T ?

I would think so. Give him the phones info and have him call, once he has the code and gives it to you, you just need to slip in a non ATT sim and it should ask for the code.
what about debrand? i got a quantum, and i live in italy...the network works, but very badly...i can only reach 3g and no hspa at all, in places where usually i had good signal with my omnia 7..so i need to debrand to make everything better. the problem is that the phone switch always between gsm and 3g and the battery drains very quickly...
I'm afraid they will not give you the code for Samsung even if you tell themthat you leave the States. Regarding Focus S they could give it, I didn't try after being turned down with iPhone. Try those various websites and eBay sellers who offer unlock codes.
If those codes fail, your only solution is getting a TurboSIM and hoping it'll work.

got the unlock code now stuck in reboot cycle
My girl has the Droid 2 Global. She got the unlock code from VZW in the USA . I rooted and flashed her phone with a ROM (I dont remember which one) and she popped the Vodafone SIM card in and it is stuck in a Boot Loop. It does show her home screen for a short moment then goes back into the red X splash screen. And repeats... I think that her ROM might not be compatible with vodafone and I cannot find any forums on it. Should she have the original stock ROM to use the SIM or does it matter?
Knowing what kind of ROM it is would be helpful.

just want to come in and say that i was scared after reading that a lot of people were having problems with the unlock codes. I tried the unlock shack (8bucks) and got the code within an hour. They actually sent 2 and i tried the first one and it worked right away. I tried it with an at&t sim card and im located in the US.

Don't post your MEID or IMEI publicly, people can do all sorts of nasty things like report your phone stolen with that information.

Did you make sure you gave the correct IMEI, not MEID?
You can obtain your IMEI number by pressing *#06# on your mobile phone. Try it.
Note: that will only show the IMEI if the phone is in GSM mode. Maybe in Global mode too, but definitely not in CDMA mode.
IMEI is available under Settings, About phone, Status.

They list the HTC One S and I've used them several times with no issues.

I have unlocked several phones through T-Mobile customer service. I simply tell them I am travelling oversees and need to use a GSM sim card from an oversees provider. Usually I would receive a response within a few days, but have seen 24 hour turnaround times before. The official name for the code is "subsidy unlock code" -at least at ATT they called it that. I think the only limitation is that TMOUS will only unlock 1 phone within a 90 day period per phone line or something like that. Good luck.
I tried to get an HTC One S code from Cellunlocker.net and it initially came back "not found" as they said its too new so try back a week later. I waited a week and a half and the code came back and it worked. Film it and you can get it for free sometimes!

Usually tell them you are traveling abroad and need it unlocked to use another sim card while you are over there. I have had several phones unlocked that way.
I have also just said "I need my phone unlocked for personal reasons" and generally they do not follow up with a why.
Telus is now offering the Blue/gray. Not sure if that would be any easier though.

Yeah, I work for T-Mobile in tech care and we don't care what the reason is really. You can do it for any reason at all as long as your account is eligible. I don't remember all the requirements but the major ones are these:
active account for at least 40 days (might be 45)
not delinquent, nothing past due on your account
not received another subsidy unlock code in the last 90 days for that phone line
There are other things they will check also, but those are the major points we look at. It's real easy though, we just ask for your IMEI and and email address and fill out an electronic form that goes to a department that gets sim unlock codes from the manufacturers. You will usually get an email with unlock code and instructions within 48 hours.

There is an easy way. Search google for "Unlock samsung phone" and pick one of the websites that offer an unlock code for $10 to $15. You give them the IMEI number, pay and they send you a code. I got mine in about 8 hours. Then you just boot with a working SIM card from another provider and it asks you for a code which you enter. Done.
There also e-bay listings for same service, - I haven't tried that.
Also, depending on your provider, you just might need to call them and they will give it to you.
For instance, my contract with AT&T expired and I called to unlock my Motorola RAZR. It took them about 3 weeks, but they did gave me a code for free.
Now, I am on T-Mobile. I own my phone from day one. So, according to T-mobile, all I need to do is call them after being with them for three months and they will send me a code for free.
I didn't care to wait, so I just purchased the code anyway.
