HELP! How to Unlock Bootloader and Install custom Recovery on the latest build? - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey guys!
Now that the Nexus 5 is at the end of it's product life cycle, and has likely received it's last update, I have finally decided to venture out to rooting this phone and installing Android N to breathe a fresh life into the phone. This is the first phone I have had that has to be rooted through the computer so this is all new territory for me. If anyone could provide me a Noob tutorial on a) Unlocking the bootloader b) Root and install a custom recovery, it would be highly appreciated.
Model Number: Nexus 5
Android Version: 6.0.1
Build Number: M4B30X
Thank you and have a good day!

For you the easiest way would be to use Skipsoft's Tool for rooting. It will allow you to easily unlock the bootloader and install a custom recovery. From there you will be able to flash new roms. Also, you could use the fake nexus rom once you have the bootloader unlocked. That one would be the closest to what you're used to experiencing on your phone.

Apparently If I use this tool, the only way I can access the custom recovery is through the kit? Is this true? Can I not access it by a Button Combination on boot?
Thanks for your reply though!

You can access any recovery on the phone by using volume and power buttons.

Yes! I forgot this very important part. Thank you sir!

No problem as we're all here to help and learn from one another.
When I started rooting, flashing, etc. I did not use tool kits as I wanted to learn as much as possible; therefore, for my N5, I did everything manually from installing adb drivers to unlocking the bootloader and flashing with fastboot commands.

i was thinking of unlocking my device and changing the rom.. however, ive permanently bricked this tablet for and had to have it repaired at a high cost, so im cautious.. i believe i fell victim to the having the twrp and resetting via the bootloader problem... how do i avoid this, how do i prevent this from happening again? i cant use nvflash, and is there any way of changing this annoying bootloader?

If using the wrong version of custom recovery vs bootloader can brick your device. The best way to approache this is, first upgrade your device to the latest JB .25, then unlock your device, then use fastboot to push your latest twrp recovery (2.3.3.0), then flash custom rom. Pretty much straiht forward without risk.

do i still need twrp installed or do i use fastboot for that?.. also i had to downgrade to 9.4.5.30 to root it first, should i need some kind of root protection before upgrading back to JB?

You don't need to root if you're unlocked because all custom roms are pre-rooted. Maybe this will be clearer;
Let pretend you're on JB, if you are on ICS, just use OTA upgrade to JB.
1. use Asus unlock tool to unlock (the tool will work with ICS or JB and very safe to use)
2. Use fastboot to push TWRPcustom recovery to your device
3. Boot into TWRP to flash custom rom (now have custom rom and rooted).
Done.

Yes, "fastboot flash recovery ... " installs a recovery.
I rooted mine when I had ICS and used OTA rootkeeper to OTA to JB to keep root. Unlocked it then used Goomananger (required root) app from the market to install TWRP. I like goomanager as you dont need to hook it up to your pc and was pretty easy. If you're already rooted I would go this route to install custom recovery.

I was just as hesitant as you are. Took the leap yesterday and I am VERY happy I did. CROMI turns this baby into a whole new experience!
Just follow the instructions in this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1833212
Read it, follow all the links, read it again and when you feel you really understand the process, follow it step by step.
The whole process turned out to be a breeze - especially compared to the trepidation I had about this

Best rom is CleanRom version 3.2.1.
ok.. well it seems i have twrp installed just fine now, used the fastboot method... im going to try cleanrom a bit, and try out the ubuntu LXDE rom as well, ill try cleanrom first
it looks as if everything was successful, and i made it past the stage that caused a brick before, so i would say im in the clear now, tried clean rom, pretty cool you can choose your stock launcher but i really want to experiment with ubuntu on it as well with a mouse and keyboard, see if i can replace my netbook with this

Anyway this is a good guide with a step by step for you to unlock > flash.
Read thoroughly and try to understand each step before proceeding.

Even after unlocking your device`s bootloader, it still remains as it was- stock,
the only difference is, that it is unlocked now-
security-on flag, has been lifted, for certain device`s nand partitions.
so, you now have rights to write to those,
that`s what it means...
...and is enough to load and use, any custom rom
to your phone...
To revert to the state from before unlocking:
simply- in ADB ,with device connected and rebooted in to bootloader,
issue command:
fastboot oem lock
the phone will then do its thing and that`s it- it is locked again.
For the record:
even if you wish to run RUU,
before it, you MUST relock bootloader,
otherwise RUU will always throw back an error...
I do not know about unlocking or rooting kits,
but in my opinion is best to do it manually,
then, at least you know what you`re doing,
and where it is failing- if so...
1. HTCdev- as easy as one can imagine
2. Flashing recovery of your choice via fastboot
3. Flashing superuser via newly installed recovery
..and that`d be all- it`s rooted...
...If you want to flash custom rom, after unlocking bootloader,
you do not even need to root your current system,,
just need CUSTOM RECOVERY- through which, you can- then
flash system that is rooted already.....
In desire S/android development/ index of roms recovery...
you`ll find everything you`ll ever need,
or:
Desire S/questions&Answers/DesireS help thread noob friendly....
posts:
#2 and #3.....
The two candy stores for every Saga user,
flooded with tutorials, how to`s, ROMS and other goodies....

Root Without BL unlock

Hello guys
im looking to root my OPO, but i dont want to unlock the Bootloader or install a custom recovery, just want a method to root so i can install Xposed on the stock CM11S rom, is this actually possible?
Why not just unlock the bootloader? Your warranty isn't affected by it. You lose nothing by unlocking it, and you gain nothing by leaving it locked.

Like @timmaaa mentioned, you lose nothing when you unlock bootloader. Not only that, it is the recommended and futureproof approach to do so. Unlocking the bootloader wipes your phone completly clean. Suppose somewhere down the road you want to try different ROMs, you'd realize you cannot do so without losing your data. So you'r much better off unlocaking your bootlaoder right now.
But to answer your question, no. It is not possible at a simpler level. Unlocking the bootlaoder give you access to all the partitions on the phone. What you need access to specifically is the recovery partition so you could flash a custom recovery and install the SU binaries onto your system. through that recovery.
What others have said, unlock the bootloader there's no problem with leaving it unlocked.
You're given the key to unlock the bootloader using a command. Use it and make your life simple. It's like saying you have the key to your house but you want to get inside the house without unlocking the door. Just use the key and make it simple.

Perhaps you felt like I did, worried that you are ruining your phone or your ota ability.
Unlocking the Bootloader is painless aside from having to reinstall all your programs. Everyone says it wipes the os, but what they don't tell you is that you don't have to dig around looking for the proper version to reinstall. You just type a code, and the phone reboots fresh like a factory reset, ready to go. And installing the custom recovery is easy, and it works perfectly with ota updates.

Unlock bootloader then rooting method?

Hey everyone, I've been lurking around for about two months, from when I picked up this phone. It's still completely stock. Unrooted, S-ON, all that. Well, after the update to Nougat, I've been searching for a way to unlock the bootloader & root. Is it safe for me to use WinDroid Toolkit for the process? Just need a guide for the process, for the most part. I appreciate any help that anyone is willing to offer.

Go to http://htcdev.com and make an account, then follow the steps and unlock your bootloader from there. After that you fastboot flash TWRP using ADB, and then use TWRP to flash a root solution. I prefer Magisk.
Alright, just unlocked the bootloader, going through the process of setting up my phone once again. Do you have a link to the Magisk & TWRP programs that I can use? Also, should I put the TWRP file in the same folder as the fastboot files?
I greatly appreciate the assistance you've given me so far, I'm deeply grateful man.
Okay, so I flashed twrp, then the seSuperuser zip that was linked to in CaptainThrowback's thread. Now my phone is stuck in a bootloop, it won't go past the HTC logo with the red warning letters. What do I do now?

try this step by step.. :good:
1.Flash TWRP 3.0.3-8 via Fastboot.. Do not reboot into system, enter into recovery..
2.Do a factory Reset via TWRP.. Do not reboot into system
3.Now flash SuperSU 2.79 SR3.. Reboot into system..
couple of bootloops are common, do not give up for at least 3 bootloops..
It will take a long time to boot as you have done a factory reset..
So be patient and wait for at least half hour..

Sorry about this - I updated the TWRP thread with the current/preferred root method: MagiskSU.
You need to flash a stock boot.img and then flash the Magisk zip from the linked thread.

Aw crap, I wish I would have seen this yesterday. I tried to format data & flash one of the stock rooted roms for marshmallow roms for my sprint one a9... now it just hangs at the HTC One logo. I'm gonna assume that I'm screwed until a stock rooted Nougat rom is released for sprint.

You don't flash firmware with TWRP. But you can use the SD card method to flash the RUU, which doesn't require a computer.

Hello Guys,
I Have an HTC one a9 with 7.0, s-off, bootloader locked
I have some concerns before I root my phone
If I unlock the bootloader and root the phone, Will I have the option of phone encryption as it used to be ?
If I unlock the bootloader with HTCDev and flash the TWRP with SuperSu and boot file, it is a MUST to do a data factory reset? or I`m able to do all the process without loosing my data?
Thank you in advance

Hi all, I've been lurking and reading for 2 months, preparing to root my device. So this title fits my mood.
One A9, "factory unlocked version", S-on, running 1.57.617.60
Just did the actual unlock from htcdev so now data is erased. I'm re-reading the threads I saved to prepare, now that it's time to actually finalize what ROM I want to run, but now have a few questions before completing the plunge.
In past threads I read the newer MM and N security prevented rooting, and reverting to Lollipop was necessary. From what I read here that is no longer the case?
If I want to debloat the system I am already running, can I do that without finding a custom ROM to run?
Thank you

Yes, you can root and debloat Nougat. Though you should make a stock system image backup first of you ever want to receive an OTA again. The TWRP thread FAQ has a lot of information about this.

Help on rooting a BLU Studio G2 S010Q

Can somebody help me on trying to root my BLU Studio G2? I have tried non-PC methods, but it never worked. Then I tried to root with Kingroot, but because there isn't any class of recovery for my phone, I'm attempting to use Magisk. My bootloader can have the option to be unlocked, but when I hit the Volume Up button to confirm it, it doesn't do anything. Please, I would like this to be solved ASAP.

HI there,
It might not be possible as SP FLASH TOOL will definitely give you an error.........
AND IF YOU DID BYPASS THE PROCESS THERE MIGHT BE A CHANCE THAT IT WILL BRICK SO I SUGGEST THAT NOT TO DO IT
there might be another way
Many months ago, I had found the latest stock rom for this phone and took the boot.img from the file to flash itvon sp flash tool. Worked like a charm!
