Strange New app "Rooms" pushed to GS7E - Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge Guides, News, & Discussion

I have a new app suddenly appearing on my home screen "Rooms". Strangely it doesn't have a logo so uses Android icon as logo. I have opened it and it says to insert phone in Gear VR. At work so will check with Gear VR in the evening. Uninstalled it two times and it reappers after a few minutes.
Anybody else has seen this? Or know what is this

Yeah I was wondering what this is too, I haven't checked it on the Gear VR yet either. Tried uninstalling it but it just comes back. I've frozen it with titanium backup just now. When I get home I'll defrost it and have a little look and see what it's all about.

Please keep us updated.
I have read that disabling "facebook app installer" and "facebook app manager" and then uninstalling "Rooms" app won't let "Rooms" get reinstalled. I tried it and it worked. It hasn't come back again.
The three apps i mentioned above all looks legit from Samsung. But i don't trust apps that get installed out of blue. Has Samsung mentioned anything about this? I guess it is a relation app between facebook and Oculus. Probably to support 360 images and videos on facebook to be viewed on Samsung Oculus. Not sure tho

Sure, will check in the evening, what this about. However as pointed above, even Samsung or Oculus has no right to push additional app without user consent. I am pretty sure this is no way a crtical system app which they had to push as everything including VR experience was perfectly fine without it.
Anyways will check it in Gear VR in the evening today.

Yes i have this strange app "rooms" which keeps installing . I have note 4 and yesterday facebook has been updated . My bro has a note 5 and today his phone is ao hot and consumes alot of battery but he doesnt have the "rooms" app . And his phone software wasnt updated :S

I had this also.

I've tried to update note 5 software then disable facebook app installer and facebook app manager as BlackHatVisions said and it fixed the note 5 heat and battery issue .

Guys, I could not test it in Gear VR last evening. However the Facebook app & Oculus Home auto updated last night while I was sleeping. Today morning when I picked up the phone "Rooms" app have disappeared. Seems to me a bug in Oculus of Facebook that it was pushed first and then removed with latest update to either Facebook or Oculus.

I had this appear also however I uninstalled it and it not come back

Mine magically disappeared

I have checked again. Actually it is back again as a hidden app now. To check go in settings -> Battery -> app power saving detail. I have it listed it there as "Oculus Rooms". Though i have put it on always power saving.

Phone not installing

Hi guys.
Strange issue with phone.
A few days ago I suddenly could not install apps for the playstore, oculus store and Amazon store.
It would download till 100 % and then nothing. After waiting 10-30 minutes then suddenly the installation begins.
Also when I press the check for update button nothing happens for 5 minutes.
Also if I downloaded something and I would select it in the notification bar nothing happens.
Then a few days there was an update (latest security patch) and all worked perfect.
Now suddenly the exact same problem is there. Rebooting doesn't help.
Any idea where I should search?
It seems there is some process busy doing something else.
Phone is very responsive besides the the problems.
Also when rebooting the same apps are in memory as before reboot. Not sure if that is wanted behavior or a bug but it seems like not a full reboot.

Did that already. Not working.
Also when entering recovery the phone wants to download an update. That isn't working and an yellow Android sign is shown. After that I can continue to the recovery.

Any other ideas? Any apps or logging to check?
I am close to a factory reset but I really do not want that.

Hi! Please see my query and can you check if we both have the same problem? https://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s7/help/google-app-causing-problems-galaxy-s7-t3632503
Thanks!

app to allow customizable navbar keys? (longpress?) on non rooted s8+.

All in one gestures used to work correctly with my s8 to kill apps on the back key longpress. I got the s8+ with all the same apps loaded and now it doesn't work at all. The service doesn't seem to run in the background like the s8 for some reason. I did notice when I started fresh it worked with no apps installed and now it doesn't? Any substitutions out there? This would be on a non rooted Xfinity s8+.

Did you transfer apps from phone to phone? Try uninstalling and re-installing the app. If it continues not to b work then contact the developer of the app.

I actually did that originally but yesterday I started fresh from a full reset and put just apps back on with super backup. I contacted the developer but didn't get a reply.

Reinstall from the play store or the original source you got the app. Don't install it from a backup or transfer

Actually upon fresh reset I did install it from the playstore all alone, like the first app. It worked in testing immediately after installing it But after installing all the rest of the apps it has seem to stop working completely. With the s8 it worked with all the same apps. My nexus 9 runs it perfectly also with it displaying the service running in the status bar.
I found the problem. After crawling through installation and installing apps 3 at a time and doing settings changes 1 at a time I have found out that the one handed gesture toggled on in settings breaks the long press feature on the 'back' soft key in the All in One Gestures app.
I just noticed that I put this in the wrong section, sorry.

S7 overheats when using Gear VR (2016 version)

Hi!
So I bought the Gear Vr 2 (the 2016 edition) and after about 30 min use streaming videos over WiFi I start to get warnings about the phone overheating.
From the reasearch I could pull, it seems to be a very rare issue on S7s, with people reporting pulling up to 2 hour gaming sessions with no such warnings.
I've tried closing all apps in background (from going to recents and closing all), also restarting the phone and trying right after. And while it I did get a few more minutes, I still got the warning. If I ignore it and keeep using it, the phone gets super laggy. Also tried going into airplane mode (with only wifi running) but still the same.
Any ideas? Never noticed the phone heating up much on any other event.
BTW, I'm on stock nougat.

if you own a Samsung Galaxy smartphone and are experiencing excessive battery drain, overheating and performance problems, VR might be the cause of all your problems too. Oculus recently sent an app update that has started creating these issues. The problems affect Gear VR-ready Galaxy phones, but the fix is pretty simple.
Okay so it seems that some people on here have come to the conclusion that the battery drain issue that some are experiencing is from an Oculus update this morning (Gear VR). I tried uninstalling the app completely to see if that helps at all – Reddit user said
You can fix these issues by simply disabling or deleting the Gear VR Service until Oculus sends an update fixing the problems.
Go to Settings > Applications > Application Manager.
Locate Gear VR Service.
Uninstall or disable.
Support on community discussion thread advises users to “uninstall Oculus Home first, and then Oculus Rooms (in that order) and then re-dock” the Galaxy device. “After you do that, it should download the latest working update,” hopefully fixing the issue.
Before uninstalling or disabling, however, simply open the app and see if it fixes the issue. Some users have reported that an Oculus update pushed itself through when the app was opened. The update seems to fix the problem. If it doesn’t, try the above fixes to see if you get rid of these problems.

Leave the cover off the Gear headset that covers the phone / point a fan at the headset
People mod them to hold a small battery powered fan to keep things cool

That bug was over a year ago, and was fixed within days
When you search Google, check the dates (2016)

Check when an article was updated. It may still show an older date, the date of the initial release, but if you click on it, you may see that it was updated, and when. Or if it was not.
So, even older articles may be helpful.
Thanks for your replies!
I tried the uninstalling the updates, but after after about 40 min still got the warning. I guess I'll have to do the cooler thing, annoying as it is.

I am having facebook messenger problems

Hi everyone.
My wife has an S8 and recently she has noticed that she hasn't been receiving notification on Facebook messenger.
Me thinking it was an easy problem to solve went into the phone setting clicked on notifications and found that the notifications for the app were all on how they should be.
Then I went into the app settings and checked there and everything was right.
Then I restarted the phone and it still wouldn't work.
Then I uninstalled and reinstalled the app and still no success
I even got my phone out an S7E and checked how the settings should look on mine and hers matched my settings.
All her other apps are working except this one.
Am I missing something here, because it doesn't make any sense why it's not working. I performed a stock flash on the device about a month ago to 3 software, so she could have wifi calling but I don't see how this could of affected this one app and none of the others.
If anyone has any suggestions here I am all ears because I am out of ideas.
Make sure that it's not being forced close by the S8's onboard memory manager... sometimes it shuts down apps and you won't get notifications. Double check in the battery settings (you can get there from settings or the swipe panel) to see if the Messenger app itself is active.

Hi people, I seem to have solved the problem.
I followed the suggestion and went to the battery setting. In those setting there was an option for unmonitored and monitored apps. When checking the list of apps that were in these setting everything was right, including the messenger app in unmonitered app section. I removed it from that list and didn't bother adding it back.
Tested.........and it worked....I even got other people to message her in different situtations and it worked and still works.....not added it back in to the list yet, as long as it keeps working I prob won't

I think this might be a recent system-wide glitch on Google's server side.
There are several other internet threads on this topic, including on the XDA Pixel 1 XL thread, see:

I've had the same problem on an og Pixel 128 gig on Android 7.2.1 Verizon variant unlocked using depixel8, rooted running old versions of SuperSU and TWRP
Cellular service on a pre-paid T-mobile MVNO
Noticed weather readout missing about 5 days ago 3/21/2018. Homescreen shows only day and date now.
Tried every trick in all the threads shown above, but nothing fixes the problem.
Uninstalling updates to Google app worked first time to get a weather reading, but it never would update and long gone now.
Hope someone under warranty escalates issue with Google.
Once temporarily restored I noticed mine disappears as soon as a calendar appointment or similar appears on the at a glace widget. Also read it's associated with you account insofar as some folk with other accounts get better maileage by switching to those accounts.
Been like if for a while for me - no fix in sight so far...
I have totally stock PIxel 2 64GB
how does Google constantly manage to f up every little thing? I just don't get it.

Interesting. Will also try that, as every other trick did not work. Weird Google Dev Guys.
Can confirm, it came directly back after enabling the location history.... Really does not make any sense for me....
Yep it is now tied to location history. They use every possibility to get your data. "You won't give us your location history? Well, than you can't see how the weather is right now"
Does anyone know a similar widget than? Having weather data is not worthy cutting my battery time in half. Also i think the location history is just ridiculous, it does not have a single benefit for me, i just noticed a way worse battery life last time i tested it.
Somehow it's working again without changing anything
so i have pixel 2 xl, and location history enabled on my phone but its still doesnt work.
anyone found a fix for issue?
I think you must update google app to version 7.24.31.
For me after update to last version weather work again
For me it is also available again, with disabled location history (and no app updates since I don't have access to any WiFi at the moment). Strange...
weird. i honestly gave up. f google. I started using nova again with HD widgets like I always did on every phone.
Sent from my Pixel 2 using Tapatalk
I tried everything above. I finally uninstalled the Google App through the Play Store, then updated the Google App (it's a system app, so it doesn't completely uninstall). That worked for me.
I managed to fix it following these steps.
1. Uninstalled the Google app
2. Opened the outdated app
3. Menu
4. Customize feed
5. Navigated to the Weather section and tapped on View All Settings
6. Disabled "Weather updates" and "Weather updates for your location"
7. Tapped on the DONE button
8. Kill the Google app
9. Went back to the store and updated the Google app
10. Open the app go to customize feed and reenable the weather updates again.
I have used various methods involving uninstalling and reinstalling the Google app. All restore the weather until after the next calendar event appears in the at-a-glace widget
I gave up trying to get "At A Glance" to work consistently. Being at the whim of whatever updates or backend changes Google decides to make turns it into an occasionally useful but mostly inconsistent, useless waste of screen space.
If you use Nova, you can use "Another Widget" from the Play Store. It's layout is identical to At A Glance and allows font, size, and other detailed customizations. It's basically a better "At A Glance" widget.
I just tried something today and the weather at a glance was back. I went into "Customize feed" -> weather settings, and changed "Preferred temperature units" from Celsius to Fahrenheit and weather at a glance was back (both in feed and on home screen). Then I changed it back to Celsius and the weather update is still there... Weird.
I tried every piece of advice I read about it and it didn't work properly (uninstall Google app, enable location history, etc.), but this did it. Hope it helps.
