[Q] Root and then update or viceversa?

Hi, i got my first android and i´m VERY happy with it.
Although, i still want to make two things to make it better. Eliminate bloatware and update to gingerbread.
My confusion is that, to eliminate bloat i know i must ROOT, but should i root BEFORE updating or AFTER updating?
I have another doubt, will rooting affect functions of my phone like serving as a AP (access point) or any other???
Note: i do have the SGH-T959V (T-mobile´s) BUT it is unlocked and as i live abroad i´m using it with another telco. (Will rooting or updatind affect my conectivity to my other telco?)

You need to first root in order to install a custom recovery, then the root should persist across different ROMs you flash.
I only encountered one ROM where I lost root after flashing, but I think that is rare.

Can ROOT be undone???
After the device has been rooted, if somethings comes out wrong, can i UNROOT it? and leave the phone as brand new???

Yes, but I don't know how for the SGS4G.
For my Huawei U8100 it was as simple as reflashing the stock ROM, but for the SGS4G I don't think it is that easy. The closest thing to a stock ROM I found was a rooted stock ROM.

flash a stock rom with odin and use superoneclick root to unroot the phone. simple at that.

I have the above and was thinking of rooting it but have some questions.
1/. If i root the phone do i also have to unlock the bootloader or is unlocking the bootloader only if i want to install a custom rom?
2/. If i only root the phone how can i make a backup of it in case i need to restore it to factory settings?
3/. Can someone recommened a custom rom and it features? I read alot about cleanrom.
4/. I also read about CM9 what does this do?
5/. One click unlock is that ok to use?
6/. What is the main difference when 1 roots there phone against not doing it? Does it change anything when installing? Does it give me extra abilitys with the phone?

No you do not have to unlock the bootloader unless you want to install custom roms or recovery

You can you use an app like titanium back up to back up apps and data
If you unlock your bootloader you can install a custom recovery and create a nandroid back up which you can restore your phone to in the event of a problem

Cm 9 is close to vanilla android with some extra goodies like themes to name one
5/. One click unlock is that ok to use?
Should be fine just make sure to use the one that matches your current software ie 1.73 or 1.85

Root in short gives permission to access and modify things in the system of your phone ie read and write privileges

1. You only need to unlock the bootloader if you want to install a custom recovery and rom
2. You can use an RUU for that, otherwise you need to unlock your bootloader and install a custom recovery in order to make backups (like restorable system snapshots)
3. The 3 versions of CleanROM are pretty good. Very stable and I'd say that all the features work that are supposed to. CM9 and AOKP are still in alpha at the moment and not everything works quite right. I can't speak for any other roms but I'm sure they're in the same boat as CleanROM
4. CM9 is a custom rom based on AOSP (Android Open Source Project). It's completely stock android but with lots of new features and tweaks. Right now it's in its 4th alpha. From what I've seen it's usable as a daily driver but there are still a lot of kinks to work out.

6. Rooting the phones gives you (and apps that you allow) access to the root file system of the phone. You can install custom bootanimations, remove carrier bloat, and do lots of other things that you wouldn't normally be able to do. I'm not gonna go over everything because that would take awhile

[Q] Root Keeping Stock Recovery

Hi,
I would like to root my phone mantaining the stock recovery, and booting temporarily a custom recovery
If i execute a "fastboot boot customrecovery.img" and then i install from zip the "UPDATE-SuperSU-v1.69.zip" for example, I know that i will have a rooted phone with stock recovery.(right?)
I would like to do this in order to receive OTA without manual installation (i'm right?), thing that i have already done on my "old " Galaxy Nexus and now i would like to avoid doing it on the N5. I know that, in a case like this, i will lose root and then i have to do the process again.
The question is: There's just some contraindication doing this?

Chainfire has the solution for you. Root and keep everything else stock.

Your method of booting a recovery image will work fine. That's the way I would do it.

MM update with root

Hi,
apologies if this has been asked before. I have received messages to update to marshmallow OTA, but my phone has an unlocked bootloader and is rooted. From what I understand the bootloader is not a problem, but the rooted phone is. I have also seen references to TCRW recovery, but I'm not sure if I have that (I forget now how I rooted the phone...)
So what steps should I take in order to update? Is it easier to just download and flash the MM firmware directly, or should I unroot the phone and then do it OTA? Easy instructions for either approach would be much appreciated!

You need stock recovery and an unrooted phone to apply the update. You can flash stock MM firmware and then get the OTA. WAIT FOR SOMETIME.

Hi, thanks for the reply. Is there any way of unrooting without relocking the bootloader? It would make it easier to reroot once I upgrade to MM I imagine, but all the instructions I can find online do both - any links to a reliable set of instructions would also be appreciated!

You do not, actually can not, relock the bootloader. You just need stock recovery, meaning no TWRP, and remove root and any significant changes made to the system with root.
There are no real instructions needed and it kind in some ways depends what you have done with root... if you have done heavy modifications to /system then you might as well just reflash the factory image. If you have done only a handful things, you MIGHT be able to take the OTA if you undo them, such as remove Xposed and it's modules, use the SuperSU app to do a full unroot (it's an option in the menu, just look for it), and you have to find the stock recovery for you device and flash it with fastboot.
There is no step-by-step tutorial because every situation is different, everyone does different things to their phone... If you are unsure you can do it, perhaps just flashing the factory image will do what you need? It will wipe everything, but nothing you can do will lock/relock your bootloader.

I actually haven't done anything with root except install adaway (from what I remember! nothing fancy in any case), and am still on stock firmware, so will just do as you suggest and unroot with supersu and flash the stock firmware..

Relocking the bootloader was possible with some older Moto G models, but I believe everyone with the 3rd Gen that has tried it has failed. Make sure any tutorials or guides you use are for the Moto G 3rd Generation or 2015 model, although previous models are similar there are definite differences.

I just ordered Moto G Turbo (which is probably the same as the normal Moto G 2015 phone.)
Quick question: I would like to keep it as stock, since it is for my parents' use. If I update it to the latest OTA (6.x), will I lose ability to unlock the BL?
Coming from the Droid's background, unlocking the BL is a complicated affair. But I hear things are simpler with the 'normal' Motos.

First, I'd like to say that while I'm not new to this, I AM quite rusty. So before you call me retarded for doing what I did, I already know. Now...
I have been just daily driving along on 4.4.2 for a good few years on my phone but I just got a Tab4 and rooted it and noticed that the TWRP version I wound up with was newer than on my phone, and had a few more options. Sooo, I tried to Odin the TWRP to my phone and caused all kinds of problems. Wouldn't boot. So I downloaded everything I could get my hands on to try to Odin onto the G900V to get it up and running again. The ONLY this I could flash was this...
PD1_Full_Factory_Restore_No_Aboot.tar
So now the phone is on the 6.0.1 which I figured was great but quickly noticed that not everything was working. No WiFi, no Camera, no Back and Recent keys, and no extsdcard recognition, so obviously unacceptable. Is this too new to be undone? I spent all night last night and today reading through the various forums, and I haven't seen it directly addressed.
Here are my questions...
1. Can I root this and fix the issues from there? If so, with what tool?
2. If I cannot yet root this, how do I downgrade from this kernel/firmware to something that is at least stable for this device?
Point me in the right direction, I'm not a total newb. I've rooted many devices, many times, but I really haven't been keeping up on anything for some time. Any help would be awesome, I'll pour some beer out for you, Thx in advance.

I did something similar, which is what I get for just reading the instructions instead of the warnings at the top of a post.
I tried a number of things, but ended up using odin to do a complete wipe and go back to stock.

AFAIK this IS a stock ROM, but as I said this was the only thing I could get to flash after I tried to flash a new TWRP. Nothing else will go.
Being a bit rusty myself, it caught my ear when you mentioned the full wipe, I never performed a wipe of any sort during my efforts.
Could that be the problem?
Also, someone please refresh my memory, what piece is it that actually determines whether a device is rootable?
Is it the kernel? Is this one rootable? What is the modern method for acquiring root? I was using towelroot back in the 4.4.2/4.4.4 days.

UPDATE : It also will not make a phone call. Hitting the CALL button or trying to answer when it rings will cause the phone to reboot, lol

Just downgrade to PB1 using the stock TAR and unlock your bl from there...
