[Q] Surface legacy software suport

Hi guys, i am just wondering how the things going with the legacy apps/software on Surface?
Is it possible to run any apps/software on Surface which are running under xp/vista/w7/w8 ?

No, it is not possible to run legacy apps. Eventually we may be able to run recompiled versions of these apps, but an app from xp will not run on the surface at any point without at least first being compiled for arm

For me it is looks like MS released useless device, because as a Surface user if I am not able to run legacy apps - such device is completely useless

If you were an experienced user, you would have known what Windows RT was about without having to ask.
I can do plenty of real world work using the Surface, because I use it as a companion device to better equipped machines.
I am a IT professional, but I would not trade the battery life of the ARM based Surface with the power of an Intel based Surface Pro.
Just because something doesn't suit your purposes, doesn't make it rubbish!
As it is, by coming onto this forum making posts such as yours, you're just a troll.

Mate the issue is your calling us housewives and inferring your an experienced professional user. Surface with windows rt has been announced for quite some time as an IT professional I've known full well it is an arm device which would require special apps so don't go calling me a housewife and making out your an experienced user, your simply not that smart.
I purchased my Surface RT due to the incredible battery life and the fact I can use this device to guide almost any user with windows 7/8 very easily. Full fledged remote desktop and office applications right out of the box is fantastic.
Perfect companion device for an IT professional. I'd say the housewives would be happy to stick with their ipads

The fact that I can use tablet style apps, run a full desktop environment, run a command line, and run remote desktops is exactly what I want out of a tablet. I don't need to run legacy apps when I have two other desktops and a laptop, all with remote desktop capability. For me, the pro version would be nice but the cost is too high. In addition to the cost of a pro surface, I would still need to buy a license for office.
I am a 22 year IT veteran and have used every version of Windows since version 2.11. I would hardly call myself a "housewife" user and I am very happy with my surface. I wouldn't mind running legacy apps but I certainly don't need to.

The only reason No on the RT is that you can't disable Secure Boot and you would have to find an ARM compiled version of Ubuntu.
The first reason more than anything else will keep you from doing much of anything.

This is great news considering Ubuntu is already being compiled for ARM devices. e.g. Their new mobile operating system.
Once it drops, it should only be a matter of time before someone cooks it up for the RT... :fingers-crossed:

Well, at least there is SOME light at the end of the tunnel.

Just because a secure boot-compatible segnature is present doesn't mean it will work; there's no way to add your own signing keys to the Surface RT's SB certificate store, so unless your Linux installer is either signed by MS or by another authority that is trusted out of the box, it still won't work.
Also, there's a big difference between recompiling a user-mode application for ARM and recompiling an entire OS. You need a compatible board support package for your processor and hardware. It's possible (and there are already Linux images that run on the Tegra3) but it's not trivial.

I dont see the problem with it tbh. The surface is a genuinely nice piece of hardware, its just some people dont like windows 8.
Now a hackintosh on the surface would be very interesting albeit incredibly unlikely.
I wonder if one of the various android x86 projects would consider a surface pro version.

I rather wait for windows android to release stable versions. I don't want to reboot and lost true multitasking just to play a mobile game.

looks like a fair bit of input latency there, very similar to what I see with remote desktop as opposed to running on the machine. Either that or poor drivers. Either one is possible

I would class that under poor driver support which I already said....
OSX does support touchscreen anyway.

my surface pro cannot boot from Windows 7 and Linux USBs, it still proceeds to windows 8. (im trying to put windows 7 on it or Linux)
but I can on my Recovery USB. i'm using the down volume method, and tried the advance boot thingy and chose USB method.
So i doubted if my win7 and linux usbs are not bootable, but they both boot well on my other pc.
I also have that EFI boot disabled. im not exactly a noob with tweaks and software installation, i just dont know why my surface pro wont accept those bootable usbs so i can start installing them.
please help.

Me talking about my experience with RT
I bought a Surface RT with a touch keyboard for $250 on black Friday in 2012 or 2013 I don't remember. I was blown away at how well the device worked but I wanted to expand the capabilities of it. So after a lot of poking around on this site and spending a lot of time I got things to work better. For example:
I wanted to play old Humongous Entertainment games (ScummVM)
I wanted to host a wireless network using the Surface
I wanted to dual boot RT 8.0 and 8.1
I wanted an easy way to enable and disable ICS (Internet Connection Sharing)
I wanted a button that I could use with touch to press esc
Thanks to Netham45 making and clrokr finding an exploit on Windows RT 8.0 we could run recompiled desktop apps (Number 1) so I packed ScummVM and SDL and zlib1 into a zip. Then to use touch in ScummVM while having ScummVM fill the screen you need to do the following:
Move the task bar to the left or right of the screen
Control panel->Display->Custom Sizing options->150%
I wrote a batch file for Number 2. I have a word document explaining what I did for dual boot. I will make a batch file later. For Number 4 I was looking for a 1 click method to enable and disable ICS the Batch file does that. For the last one I used visual basic.

What will the final product be like?
Hopefully I have enough support to get to beta then to final. It should:
Be a one click installer that can run on RT 8.0 or RT 8.1
Auto detect your OS (RT8.0 or 8.1)
Ask you full or custom.
If full it will install as much as it can given your OS
If on RT 8.1 it will install:
Wireless Hosted Network
ICS
Keypresser
Dualboot of 8.0 (Just asking you to input the path to install .wim)
If on RT 8.0 it will install:
Jailbreak
7-zip
ICS
Wireless Hosted Network
Keypresser
If custom it will ask what you want to install from a list of tools that can be installed based on your OS

No, he's using the same jailbreak available for RT 8, hence the reason there's a dual boot option, for 8 and 8.1 so you can switch to 8.1 whenever you don't need to run something on 8.

I have been busy these past few weeks so I have not been able to respond to replys. Sorry. Also I have been working more and more on this project:
I have a vision for the final product to be an auto installing/extracting zip file
I now have some Questions for you guy's:
What do you want to do on your RT's?
Has anybody tested the alpha tools? Like them? What else do you want in them?
Do you want GUI or CMD tools? It is easier to prepare CMD but maybe not as nice looking or good for touch.
I started a dual boot batch flow chart.
Once again thanks for all your support! I need lots to continue this project into beta.

Like someone else said; nope. You need myriachan's Secure boot disable on 8.1 to JB 8.1. I can, with myriachan's Secure boot disable, load Kernel drivers on 8.1 now so I basically have a JB.

Support to do it on 8.1
I would like to be able to run it without downgrading. Sadly, I can't downgrade without my files being toast for some reason (onedrive doesn't like them if I downgrade for some reason ) start with CMD tools, and only if people are really bemoaning about how there are no GUI tools, then create them. People aren't complaining about how the jailbreak is CMD and not GUI

Dual Booting on 32GB Model
Hey, was just wondering. My surface rt has been doing some solid work for quite some time and I'm rather satisfied with it. Some slow downs and maybe a few freezes, but my main concern is that the os alone takes almost more than half of my entire storage capacity. Would dual booting be unsafe for the 32GB surface rt users?

I dual boot my 32gb surface RT all the time. I've never had the problems you are talking about. Then again I moved my user profile to my 32gb SD ???

Install windows 10 on ASUS ZenPad S 8.0 Z580CA Possible?

I really like the hardware offering from Asus on the ZenPad S 8.0.
I can't find any good windows 10 tablets, does anyone know if you can install windows 10 on a ZenPad?

i think you need the replace the bios or something so that the tablet can boot from a usb

+1 for interest, on the concept anyway. If Windows can boot, Linux shouldn't be much harder (might even be easier), and I'd be far more interested in that.
In order to use Windows on this tablet, you'd either have to hope it has drivers built-in for whichever architecture it boots in (good luck if it boots 32-bit UEFI like some Intel devices do), or hope there's drivers available that would be compatible. Linux has a much better shot at working on this tablet as-is.
Can't quite understand why this tablet out-the-box is only locked to Android though... Could have easily offered a dual-boot scenario, or even outright just allowed any x86-compliant OS to be installed. But having just Android on this tablet is overkill in my opinion.

Actually not, since Windows licencing is no longer paid for devices under 10 inches.

You don't include Windows, you just simply make it have a generic x86_64-compliant legacy or UEFI bootloader.
Windows licensing doesn't apply to a device that doesn't come with Windows considering the device doesn't ship with Windows (or at least I would think).

I would still love to see a rom of windows 10 i could load. At the moment, I just use splashtop if i really need windows functionality on my tablet, and since I work from home, it's not too bad, lan Splashtop is pretty good, especially with a good router.

I'm interested in this tablet since it's on sale right now, but I don't have the money. Should I ever get one I'd totally install Arch Linux or something. If anyone has one of these and attempts this, please start a dev thread or something to document the project.

Or at least some way to change to Windows. This is a great tablet, but it comes with the wrong OS.

Bootloader is still locked. Until that's changed, no alternative OS.

Windows 10 Mobile on Shield Tablet.

Where would somebody get an image for Windows 10 Mobile if they wanted to try to install it on the Shield? Been curious about this, and not a fan of Android as much as I thought, but don't like Apple.

Nowhere. Someone would had to make a ROM with Windows 10 and I don't think that there were any ports of Windows on ARM for anything other than HTC HD2 few years ago.

Not possible. Anyway Windows 10 Mobile is dead and boring to use compared to Android.

Much too difficult and complex. It would require not only porting Win10, but also the drivers/firmware to make it work with the Shield's specific hardware. Which don't exist, so you would have to do that from scratch? Getting it to work would probably take hundreds of hours, if ever. Plus, Windows is closed source, so it's probably not even legal to port it.
Much easier to just buy a WIn10 device, if that is what you want.
