[Q] Any way to apply OTA update with unlocked bootloader and custom recovery? - Moto G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

My son's XT1031, which has an unlocked bootloader and TWRP recovery, has been continuously requesting to install an OTA update (221.31.4). I tried to install the update zip file I found in the /cache directory but it fails to install. Does anybody know how to install the OTA with a custom recovery? The phone is stock Android 5.1 (221.21.56) otherwise.
Thanks in advance.

[Q] cant install android 5.1

Hello
I run stock rom with twrp
I download the update and then i tap to install it
It reboot my phone into recovery mode without updating it
Then i reboot my phone and i realize that the update was lost
It says me that my phone is updated(thats not true)
What can i do?
Maybe i can flash the update because i downloaded it and probably it is somewhere in my device?
Please help me
Thanks
Assuming you are rooted (since you mentioned TWRP), you cannot install updates to Lollipop - because your system partition is modified. You will need to be completely stock if you want to take OTA.
P.S. The update is 5.0.1, not 5.1
I was in the same condition, I flashed a stock lollipo android 5 with is home kernel, no root and with unlocked bootloader but the result is not changing. When the 5.1 update pop appears I confirm dowbload, I confirm installation but when reboot in recovery a very fast fake installation runs on error and then stop on home twrp immage.
Please any flashable pure stock will probably be easier.
Thanks
Sorry jj14 I confirm update is 5.0.1

Backup your apps and other files on your phone and just flash the 5.0.1 factory image, reroot and restore your user apps and you`re done.
Could you please upload a stock .zip file 5.0.1 that I could flash from recovery??

you will be able to download the OTA but not install it.
unrooting and uninstalling the xposed, and flashing stock recovery will not work.
I suggest you to back up the OTA zip file after it downloads to the computer (/cache/ folder - its outside the sdcard directory)
you will need root to backup the OTA zip file (use ES File Explorer with Root options)
now flash the stock 4.4.4 firmware (the one that got the OTA update) with fastboot
the Lollipop update checks if the system folder was modified in any way. if it has, the update will fail

Problem is once the bootloader is unlocked, it can't be relocked until stock firmware image is flashed. I was searching for relocking bootloader in non-gpe moto g but no gain. Relocking process in gpe moto g is working very well though.
I have a rather different scenario . . i have stock ROM, custom recovery, unlocked bootloader and root access . .i tried to get the official lollipop update, but it got rejected due to low internal memory . .then after clearing memory, when i check for system updates , it says my "software is up to date" while it is still in kitkat!! . .i have been then checkin for updates again and again for days but still no use . .plz what should i do to get the official update? . .i have seen lots of others asking the same thing in different sites.but no answer.

Confusion with official Marshmallow upgrade for rooted stock rom

I flashed TWRP recovery and rooted my Moto g3 XT1550 but im on stock ROM itself. Now I got a OTA notification of Marshmallow update.
So, can I download the OTA & install it without unrooting or flashing stock recovery?

No! There should be no confusion here, the ONLY possible modification that can be done to your phone where you can accept a OTA update is an unlocked bootloader, NOTHING else. No Root, no TWRP, no Xposed... Your software status should show official and if the /system partition has been modified it will fail. PERIOD.
You cannot install an OTA without returning to PURE stock, not just unrooting and flashing stock recovery, you need to have an unmodified /system partition (root and then unroot is still a modified /system partition). Flash the factory image that matches your current software, then take the OTA, and flash TWRP and root again.

Have TWRP, cannot instal OTA update

Hi, guys!
Have TWRP, B324 and want to install the B331 OTA. I downloaded the zip from here http://forum.xda-developers.com/mate-7/general/huawei-mt7-l09-l10-stock-firmware-ota-t3275784 but it fails to flash (with file_getprop error). Any ideas?
Flash Stock Recovery and try again
Can't do an OTA without stock recovery.

I want to ask if you have a functional "Motion Control" and if so, whether it would be possible to provide TWRP Backup.

Of course you can do it only with the Stock Recovery
Thanks.
Can someone point me to the place where I can find stock recovery?

Mate 9 Pro, OTA after root & TWRP

What would be correct method to get OTA installed when current system is rooted and gave TWRP recovery? Rooted TWRP system still offers OTA updates but these can’t be installed coz update is not TWRP compatible.
Once I tried: Extracted stock recovery from update stock firmware, flashed recovery.img & recovery2.img with fastboot. Still I was not able to get update installed anymore. Ended up to install whole new firmware with FunkyHuawei.
Is there any way to update phone without losing all data and install everything again?
