Once you wipe your data partition your files are gone for good. When in doubt just make a backup.

Well I'm not sure about that one. But if the CIA had possession of your phone I suppose they could just beat you with it until you tell them everything. :silly:
That's much easier than forensic data recovery.

[Q] Is rebooting Android the same as a P.C.?

I know when you reboot a p.c. you dont lose any setting . I get the feeling that is not the case with Android. Can someone confirm?
Thanks and sorry for the noob question.

wtf?
of course you dont 'lose settings' by rebooting.
what exactly makes you think it would work otherwise?

Well it seems from stuff that I have read, that a reboot is often compared to a factory reset?
It did not make sense that a reboot would wipe the setting, but I just wanted to be sure.
Thanks!

i dont know what you have been reading, but a factory reset is definitely not equal to rebooting the phone.
+1 all you settings remain intact when u reboot the device. Think about how much of a pita it would be if it did not. No one would buy an android device, and if it could not save you settings data then also your Apps would be lost upon each boot. I have no idea where someone would have claimd this but its so far from the

Thanks AGAIN Silver! I have had an Android for all of three weeks, but if it were any Win
sys I would be right at home.
I had read on a few sites that a reset would clear all of your personal info and any d/l s/w?
My next step is to root the phone. It's too bad that you can't just boot from a back up if you mess up, and just reinstall the whole O/S...but from what I can tell, you can't just get a virgin copy of the Android O/S.?
Well in this thread it is the virgin copy of our factory firmware. If u ever mess up u can use Odin in this thread to flashing back to stock.... http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1342348
But also u can make backups that restore every thing before u messed up which will fix ya in most situations. Its called a nandroid backup. Once u root boot into cwm recovery, and click back up restore then select backup. Now anytime u want to go back to how your phone was when u made that back up u just ...boot into cwm click backup restore select restore and choose that restore point..... its just like the system backup/ restore in windows

Nandroid requires root, right? I guess that's why some are nervous when delving into new territory..like me.
Yeah u need to be rooted and have cwm recovery. You do the nandroid backup/restore in cwm recovery

Enter and exit airplane mode in order to restore my data connection (COS 12.1)

Im was on YNG2TAS2I3 and for some reason, my data connection usually does not work. The signal is stong but it shows a "!"; I can make phone calls but can't use anything internet related. The quickest fix for now is enter airplane mode and then exit. It usually restores the connection after that.
I upgraded to YOG4PAS1N0 and same thing.
This actually never happened to me on this pone before. What could be wrong?

He's suggesting you follow the instructions in section 8 of my guide thread to flash the stock images and start fresh. You'd also need to wipe data with TWRP first.

Don't come here creating threads if you're not going to listen to the advice you're being given. We're talking about wiping the data partition, not the internal storage.

Oh, you ment the application data partition. I know its called the data partition but it is a bit poorly worded.
Still, its a pain to put everything up again.
And I didnt say I wouldnt listen; I just said Im not gonna do that.

Hi
Root is possible on Nougat but you need TWRP , follow all steps 1-10

mate , do not know what you mean
backup , what backup ??
Please explain in detail
I think he means that he has backed up in TWRP before trying to root.
Every time I try to flash with twrp I get stuck in a bootloop or in the recovery with the /data error.
Best of luck to you. Please let me know if you find a way. Thanks

LOL... Who cares what backup I'm talking about? That's irrelevant to the question, which was "does this require starting over?"
Let me try asking again, I suppose.
Does this require [mean that I'll need to be] starting over [Reformatting/wiping all data on device; 'starting' from factory settings] or could I restore a backup [the copied data from my phone to another device, in order to restore data] I made [after rooting with the method you posted]?

Relevant is to ask correctly , to the point and give relevant information , this is not the mind reading section of the forum
what kind of backup you made? Titanium?
What data you mean , user data or apps data?
If you followed the procedure in post 3 the same in both telephones( same model) and both have the same firmware restoring app and settings , user data should be possible ...data of those apps i would not restore .

Does this imply that one backup may not restore data in this case while another may? I used SmartSwitch on a PC, Titanium wouldn't let me back up without root. Are you implying that it matters which backup program I use?
I wasn't planning to back up app data such as game progress, just apps, user settings and files.
I've already started from factory 3 times on this phone and I simply didn't want to go through settings again.
Regardless I think this gives me the information I needed, I wouldn't feel so bad about restarting my phone again just to root it, if I can get all my settings and files back.

Do you mean keeping the encrypted data from the stock firmware? If so, then no. Root always changes the encryption keys. Even the methods that allow root + encryption still require a wipe at first.

In the process of rooting, your phone has to be oem-unlocked, and there is a clear warning everything is wiped.
The wipe includes the encryption key, so unless you have a backup of the key, even a raw download of all sectors cannot save your data. This is completely as intended for the protection of your data in case of theft.
This will be a lesson to remember... Always make backup, and even more important : RTFM
Verstuurd vanaf mijn ONEPLUS A6003 met Tapatalk
Absolutely unlocking bootloader wipes all data from the phone, so technically it wasn't rooting that caused it.

Hello guys!
I'm fine with oxygen OS and I migrated all my data from previous phone, now I realized that I need root for few features, so the question is... Is there any way to get root and magister without factory reset/ wiping data?
Thanks in advance

And actually there are one-click root apps that, if they find an exploit, use it to root. But afaik they're very rare by now, and those apps are extremely sketchy (like kingo root,...). So if you come across one WHATEVER YOU DO do NOT install it and use it.
