Some of you may know me and some not. I was asked to help out on the SK4G development, so here I am.
I have some questions first.
1. You are using CWM?
2. Amend or Edify?
3. Do you have the drivers and adb set up yet?
Depending on the answers I can put out a couple of tests and then get to work on this.
I will need your newest deodexed framework-res.apk, twframework-res.apk, settings.apk, services.jar - and others as needed.
If you do not have a deodexed rom yet then I need a copy of your systemfs.rfs or a full odin to deodex it myself. I have the system dump, is this your newest rom? If so then I have already deodexed it - just let me know.
1. Yes, the epic 4g version which is buggy
2 don know
3.yes
Sent from my SGH-T839 using Tapatalk
1) No. It doesn't sound like the currently available CWM firmwares work well on the SK4G. I am waiting for one designed for this hardware. I have run CWM on other handsets, of course.
2) No. Had not heard of those until you'd mentioned them.
3) Yes. Working well. We're all set here, at least.
System dump: There only seems to be one ROM/firmware version for this phone so far. The one you have should be current. I pulled mine in this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1037403&page=5
Specifically here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=13210149&postcount=59
I'm happy to help further. Please simply let me know what you need.
And thanks for taking this on! This could be a solid phone without some of the bloatware trash foisted on it.
1. They are using the one click root for the epic by noobnl which installs CWM 2.5.1.0
2. Amend though can't you just use update-binary and make it compatible with both

Yes, but I am old school and still use amend most of the time and needed to make sure it was going to be compatible.
Once I see some feedback on the theme I posted I will move forward - I just need to know how it turns out so I will have a better understanding of the phones layout.
Might need to send Koush a message and see if we can get a proper recovery going.
I really would love it if this phone got some custom roms. I don't want to get rid of it. But I put a ad up on craigslist to trade for a mytouch 4g.

Also as far a getting a proper working recovery, i think we may need a recovery that supports the ext-SD card. our internal memory isnt used by us because its so small. its used for things like installing apps i believe. if you use a file manager you'll see the only available SD card is the external one and same when mounting the phone. i think the epic and vibrant recovery would work just fine except we'd need one that supports the external SD card.
there is a kernel called dead horse that i used on my vibrant that had this support for ext SD but i dont think theres a way to get just the recovery out of it. hopefully someone might know a way to direct CWM to our ext SD then we might be on to something ..

Its just a driver issue. We need to know exactly which SD card reader is in the phone and see if we can contact the manufacturer for the source.
I do not know how to decompile things like drivers, but I would like to know so I could get the ball rolling on this.
I'd love to see development pickup on this phone.
I've had my G1 since Dec 08 and happily rooted and did whatever I wanted to do it with the huge support from the developer community that the G1 received.
I'm keeping myself stock until someone gets Clockwork working with nandroid and there's an unroot method.

what is the sdcard mounted as? mmcblk0p1? mmcblk1p1? This is key to getting recovery set up.
Where do I find that? I just rooted the phone but I haven't flashed the buggy recovery image

Same as the Vibrant, but theirs is mounted to internal sd. I would just need to switch up some stuff.
1st and foremost.... I need your guy's initramfs from your kernel
Idk too much about the initramfs nor how to extract it.
If I'm right the zImage is the kernel maybe this could help you so I've uploaded it to dropbox aswell.

If it needs to be done from our phone could you point us in the right direction on how to get the initramfs.

Epic CM Team Blog: Boot FC09 from SDCard
Useful Utility for CM9 Epic 4G
This is a temporary ROM that boots Samsung's FC09 firmware entirely from sdcard without making any changes to the ROM installed on your phone. Simply reboot to return to your normal ROM. This sdcard ROM is useful for several purposes.
Settings > About Phone > System updates >
Update Profile.
Update PRL.
Settings > Display > Horizontal calibration
Do this if you have problems with auto rotate on CM9.
Sprint Activation.
Dial codes and diagnostic mode.
Test Samsung FC09 behavior to aid in CM development.
Changelog
FC09-based with working 3G, 4G, Update Profile, faster speed.
Uses 500MB on sdcard instead of 1GB.
Includes Connectbot and GPS Status.
Wow! This is excellent! Thank you Warren. I'm glad you decided to begin developing for the Epic. Your releases are invaluable thus far.
I look forward to seeing more from you!
This looks awesome! Thanks for your hard work!
Wow. Very cool. So glad someone else is here to prove how versatile this device is.

samsung-epic-stock-el30-kexec-multiboot.tar.bz2
171MB md5sum c4532cd10b37382d25af8304deb57fe8
How To Procedure
Download the tarball.
Unpack it in sdcard, leave the directory structure intact.
Boot into CWM.
"Flash" multiboot/EL30/boot_EL30.zip
It will boot EL30.
Warnings!
DO NOT MOUNT USB STORAGE. BAD THINGS WILL HAPPEN.
NOT RECOMMENDED FOR PRODUCTION USE.
It will be a bit slow because your sdcard is slow.

I have not done it, but I will try to explain how I understand it working. Basically you are unpacking a rom onto your SD card and then booting into CWM and flashing a script. The script tells the phone to boot the rom on the SD card. So you will boot into EL30, which is the rom on the SD card. You can do whatever you want to accomplish within EL30, and when you are done you simply reboot your phone. Your phone will boot normally into whatever rom it was running before you did anything, because the only way to boot into the EL30 rom on your SD card is by flashing the script in CWM.
So basically, its a rom that sits on your SD card and is never ever used unless you flash the "boot_EL30.zip" script in CWM, and even then it only boots into it once. As soon as you reboot you are back into CM7 or whatever other rom you are running.
With epic-scale gratitude to you for this wtogami!
Only last week had ODIN'd back to stock just simply to Update Profile............this Rocks!

I'm asking this purely out of being curious, but reading the information over on CM7 it says not to mount the SD Card.
Theoretically what would happen if you were to mount the SD Card while running this?

Well, since the entire rom and kernel are read from your SD card, and the SD is automatically unmounted from the phone in order to mount as USB storage... remember the warning about apps on the phone being unable to access the sd card while it is usb-mounted? It would be like suddenly disconnecting the hdd containing your windows installation while the computer is on (maybe not exactly the same, but hopefully you see the conflict that would arise?)

Just out of curiosity, the download page says 171 MB, but the download itself is only 164 MB. Maybe a typo? Or uncompressed size?

Google Wallet Installer for Verizon, AT&T, T-Mobile, and US Cellular Samsung Galaxy S3.
Requires ROOT, an UNLOCKED BOOTLOADER, and BUSYBOX!(A deodexed ROM is just recommended)
My newest project, RemoteFlash, was just released! Take a look and give it a try!
Wallet Installer Is Now Available For Free To All Supported Carrier Models On XDA! (Donations Appreciated)
My application, "Wallet Installer", will install Google Wallet on almost any US based Samsung Galaxy S3. It simply edits your build.prop and then places the correct modifications into your system. It downloads all the files from my personal server, which is pretty quick. Just select the appropriate Rom type: AOSP, JB Touchwiz, or ICS TouchWiz, and then your carrier: Verizon, AT&T, T-Mobile, or US Cellular. I also added a restore option for your build.prop, so you can restore it after you setup Google Wallet. Hopefully this helps you out and makes the process easier!
Wallet Installer has been updated on the server side. The credit goes to Paul Obrien for the new version! To install it, simply reset Google Wallet, delete it, and then rerun Wallet Installer! Make sure to also have BusyBox installed/updated!
Please donate if my work helps you : )
V3: No Recovery/More Stable
And as always: I take no responsibility for bricked devices, whether a soft brick or a full on brand new coffee coaster.
Dude. You are awesome. I was just in the official wallet thread and was hesitant on going through with it because it seemed daunting having to change the build prop. I'm about to flash slim Bean 3.1 and then try this out. Will update this post once I finish trying it out . Hopefully all goes well!!!
Well I ended up lagging on the install but just wanna say thanks again because it worked perfectly. First try and not a single problem as of yet. Awesome!!
Glad to help! Hopefully all goes well! If the download stalls just give it a while, my server is a retired galaxy nexus hooked up to WiFi lol. My WiFi sucks sometimes.

Google Wallet Installer for Verizon Samsung Galaxy S 3's(d2vzw)
My application, "WalletInstaller", will install Google Wallet on any Verizon S3. It simply swaps out your build.prop with a modified one and then flashes an open recovery (TWRP 2), and in the open recovery flashes the latest version of Google Wallet along with the required NFC libs for your rom. It downloads all the files from my personal server, which can be somewhat slow, but I'll be upgrading soon. Hopefully there won't be any download issues. Just select the appropriate rom type: AOSP, JB Touchwiz, or ICS TouchWiz. Hopefully it helps you out and makes the process easier! It has been tested on my device, which is running CM10, but the other options haven't been tested, but they should work great. I will also hopefully make it to support all US carrier based S3's after the weekend is over.
My application will be in the market for 99 cents if you feel like supporting the cause(will post link once uploaded), or you can download it here for free. Please don't post links to my application without my personal consent. Thank you!

So I installed the app and set it all up just fine, in fact, I was about to test out wallet at a locat establishment but I noticed something was a little weird. I tried to change my wallpaper to a picture in my gallery. For some reason I got an error that "Not enough space. Delete photos, music, etc." Last time I checked I had plenty of space. I opened up setting and storage to find my device storage has a total of 4GB of space (with close to 2GB's of free space remaining). My S3 is a 16GB unit. Obviously things are a bit haywire. I'm running CleanROM 5.0 at the moment so I'm not sure if your app would conflict with that but things were fine prior to this. What do you think?
when i choose ics touchwiz install it loads terminal emulator and says rm failed for /system/build.prop no such file or directory
I'm not sure if my app would interfere quite like that. It shouldn't, but when messing with the build.prop and a custom ROM you can never be positive. If anything else odd happens, pm me and I'll look into it.

It's possible that your system didn't mount properly, or that your ROM is using some sort of mod that moved the build.prop, or it may have been removed or altered by another application.

Here's one question for you...
Why does your installation include TWRP 2.3.1.0.
I already had a CWM Recovery...that was strange to me.....when I get to work I am going to try to flash over that to see if that's the problem. Could be that. But right now I can't access my internal drive let alone the backups if I were to start over.......LOL.....I wouldn't be able to get to.

I'm sorry that you're having trouble. I included TWRP because it uses an open, unencrypted script file to pass commands to recovery. CWM, from my understanding, requires an encrypted, not so universal script file called extended commands. Depending on what recovery someone was running, flashing a script would not work, or it would possibly brick their device. I wanted to make sure everything was done correctly.
Also... I will take a look at all my server side files today and the app. I can't make changes from where I am, since I don't have ftp setup and I'm out of town, but I can download them and see where I may have gone wrong. My best guess is the build.prop swap causing issues, if any of you have possible leads, post them here and I can attempt a fix later today or tomorrow.
BTW...Wallet worked like a charm in 7-11 and Whole Foods
Taking pictures is a little harder too...have to switch to external to save the pictures....the Camera 4.2 doesn't even allow you to switch to external card.
Would be a shame to scrap this working wallet for these issues

I'm getting ready to attempt a flash on CleanRom in a few minutes to see if that's the only ROM having issues. Hopefully you guys can stick this out until everything's working great ; )
I flashed wallet and libs using my app on CleanRom 5. I was able to replicate the same error as you guys posted. Also, I don't know if you guys checked, but in recovery it mounts the internal sdcard perfectly, so that tells me it may have something to do with CleanRom in specific. I'm going to flash through some stock touchwiz ROMs with Odin and see what results I get in that area. Hopefully it's just a ROM specific ordeal. Sorry for the long posts, just trying to keep you all updated!
Hello all-
About a month ago I picked up an S3 with Verizon. While I did have an Android before, I never knew what rooting was until I was doing some basic research on the S3. I see some pretty good stuff, so I am thinking about making the plunge. I have answered a lot of my own questions, but I still have a couple.
I have found the correct procedure for rooting my S3 (already got the JB OTA) thanks to open1your1eyes0 here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2046439
Seems pretty straightforward...
My questions are:
1. Using open's procedure, after rooting will my phone looks exactly the same as now? I thought I had read somewhere that Verizon apps such as My Verizon mobile VZ navigator etc are gone with this procedure?
2. With this procedure I will not lose any installed apps, contacts or photo's correct? (Unless I want to put on a different ROM)
3. I am a little concerned about this binary count I have read about.... is there an easy go around?
4. Finally, rooting as above, will this allow me to put apps on my SD card rather than the internal memory, or are there additional things I have to do?
Thanks to all in advance who contribute to this site!!!!!

1. Your phone will be the same just with root access.
2. You will not lose your apps until you flash a custom ROM.
3. There is an app called triangle away that will take care of that.
4. You might have to install an app to do that.

You can't put apps on the sdcard unless you create and run a script that in essence tricks the phone into thinking that the extSdCard is the internal sdcard

Some ROMs have that script. I think it requires busybox or some other app that can run scripts.
Good a place to ask as any I guess.
If you just want root to de-bloat the phone, do you need to do the boot chain switching and install a custom recovery? I'm still confused on that part. Or can you just superuser via odin and leave it at at that?

Busybox gives the phone the ability to run certain commands that the android os doesn't contain natively I think. Then gscript is a good program to run the script. I'll try and do a search for it and post it back here.

Look for folders plug in apk on the xda. Or google search folders plugin
It should allow you to put in system links (short cuts) to the SD card as though the app is still on internal memory, just don't do it to system apps... that can be messy.

Welcome. If that link to the app isn't for you and you've got root there are directions for adding system links though the command line. It's best to have a full nanDroid backup before messing around with those or the folders plug app because it's easy to soft brick your device if read write permitions get messed up when files are moved to SD, however, there are apps for fixing or setting that after the copy but before system linking.
But do check out the app that I linked to in my previous post if you've not already; works on all my devices and it's kinda funny to see the accessible space for internal memory jump to 30gigs

I got excited because I noticed that my Titanium Backup Pro app has a feature to have my apps automatically transfer to the external SD on a regular scheduled basis. However when I ran it, it says: "Guru caught fire during calculations". Nothing happened... Bummer. Maybe they'll fix that. In the meantime I will check out the mounting .apk. Though skimming the directions it sounds confusing, though it probably isn't... Thanks again, SO.

It may sound confusing but what it boils down to is;
Copying the folder and it's contents to a folder on your SD card
Verifying it all copied completely and correctly, because sometimes you'll get a stubborn one that won't copy in big chunks.
Then telling the app where it should make the shortcut. System folder
Then tell the app where on the SD card it should link it to. The copied folder.
Takes a few minuets the first time around, then only seconds the next times you run it. Just try merge first instead of move(Edit 1: it's the third option, just make the link), so that if something messes up then your not out re flashing things.
Edit 2: be sure to try it with an empty folder first by making one in data/temp and then linking a folder to it from your SD card that has something in it like the downloads folder. One more thing; don't link system apps all at once, some will handle it just fine, but for example if you link your phones phone call handling data to your SD card, it will barf hard... And avoid setting it at boot until you've worked out how your device handles this.
I've no doubt that it'll be what you're looking for, just not as easy as it'll one day be

Ok, S0, I'm going to give this a shot.. You know what'd make me real confident? Seriously, You making a YouTube how-to video, lol.

S0, I see 4 different versions of the mounting .apk.. Which one is the best & most stable?

Ok.. I tried that. It didn't work. Basically it said I need to partition my internal sd in order to link whisk I can't find an option to use the external, also I can't seem to be able to get any user app to move to my external SD, via any application I try to use. In case you might ask, yes my phone is rooted. Bummer man.. I'm lost. This shouldn't be difficult at all, but for some reason, I am mind boggled here...

Yeah I know what ya mean. Even screen shots would help a little I bet.
Alas though I'll eventually make video tutorials one day, but they'll likely be for the project I'm working on first.
The apps purity easy, but, I can understand not wanting to mess up your device accidentally. There are others out there as far as apps that will accomplish the same thing; perhaps there's a YouTube tutorial for one of them. I'll check and report back, likely after work and update this post with a link or two.

1) install the app 2) open the app 2b) allow root permissions when superuser ask 3) click in the menu key and select mountpoints edition 4) click the menu key and select add mountpoint 5) in the source folder select the folder that contains the data files 6) in the destination folder select the folder in that the apps search for the files 7) click accept 8) in the mountpoiunts list, enable the check right to the mountpoint 9) click the folder icon at the left of the mountpoint to manually mount 10) if all works fine, the grayed icon becomes yellow and is the end...

Not sure if ya saw the additional links I put up in my previous post here and it's been a few days but I can't really apologize for that; because I've been hard at work on XDA with the guide I've been writing (differences in signatures should sum it up).
Have you gotten the SD linking figured out?
If not; check different kernels and or ROM's for your device there are some that support this kind of "Mangling" of addressing and folder/file linking and some that do not. The ones (kernel and or ROM's) on your device maybe ones of a "safer" build that don't allow such things to happen.
And as far a me making video tutorials... I've found that scripting installers for people to use is way easier; I'll keep it in mind though as youtube is great for getting people comfortable with new ideas and methods.
I'll try to be back again sometime if ya don't hit me up somewhere else first.
