Spice Coolpad 2 MI-496 / 酷派 7268 Discussion Thread

Hi.
This thread will index all tutorials, drivers, utilities, firmware and flash tools specific to the Spice Coolpad 2 MI-496 / 酷派 7268.
This is a low priced Qualcomm Snapdragon 200 device based on the MSM8625Q SoC i.e. 1.2Ghz A5 quad core, with 1 GB RAM and the GPU is the old and comparatively underpowered Adreno 203.
Qualcomm Snapdragon 200 MSM8625Q Technical Specifications
The HTC Desire 500, HTC Desire 600, Karbonn Titanium S5, Micromax A111 Canvas Doodle, Samsung Galaxy Win, Little Pepper LA-M1 also share the same chipset although this looks like a clone/rebrand of the Coolpad 7268.
Most of the information posted here is gleaned from obscure Chinese forums and Coolpad support appears to be non-existent compared to other brands like the Little Pepper LA-M1 and Ascend G525
I have just flashed a working clockwork recovery and rooted this device (which I am certain that I am the first to do so )
The information in this thread is for development purposes and knowledge only. Please experiment at your own risk !
Tested and Working ROMs ported by me:

Install stock drivers (from the virtual cd-rom)
Tools:
Download Flash Tool from the following link:
(7268 Self-Upgrade Tool V2 [1] .13. Zip)
Coolpad 7268
Follow the guide here (use Google Translate for the Chinese)
Chinese CWM Recovery
Extract the cpb file from the zip archive and flash using the tool above.
Root
Copy this file to sdcard and update from zip or from sideload using cwm recovery
I have used this successfully on Win7 x64
(Note: You may need to run it in compatibility mode for WinXP SP3, disable firewall/antivirus and/or rollback the time of your computer to August 1, 2013)
Alternative Root Method:
Use vroot (not recommended as it sends suspicious data online and is considered malware at xda)
Once you are rooted, you may flash this recovery.img using adb or terminal (not tested)
Since several people have asked me about the flashing and SMS issue and which ROM to flash and all - I am updating this post on the front page with relevant information.
In order to flash the Spice Mi 496, which is a clone of the Coolpad Mi 496, Yulong has a software for the same. This flashes CPB files and seems to be a wrapper around the Qualcomm eMMC flashing tool.
The Stock ROM which I have linked below will completely bring your Coolpad to stock - meaning that root and CWM if installed will be removed.
Please see this presentation in order to understand how to use the tool : https://docs.google.com/presentation/d/1YqPfd5k5F39FGV_iPqVLzosVQMFV6znGJlLs8dXBUp0/edit?usp=sharing
Links for the tools (hosted on my Google Drive). In order to download the files, please click on File>Download or press Ctrl + S on the keyboard.
Flashing tool : https://drive.google.com/file/d/0ByoBGpu4hq-bd1FhVTNEWXIyVFE/edit?usp=sharing
Stock ROM (CPB format) (from Spice service centre) : https://drive.google.com/file/d/0ByoBGpu4hq-bZno1OHo4SzhnU1U/edit?usp=sharing
Drivers for ADB & USB tethering - Windows 8.1 x86/x64 compatible : https://drive.google.com/file/d/0ByoBGpu4hq-bT1cyWWNOeFhXYnc/edit?usp=sharing
For rooting & CWM :
Download the Chinese CWM and SuperSU.zip files. Unzip the Chinese CWM file - it will contain a CPB file. Flash this to the phone using the method above. Once done, enable USB debugging if not enabled by going to Settings>Developer Options>USB debugging.
Copy the SuperSU.zip file to the Minimal ADB and Fastboot folder in your program files folder or Program Files (x86) folder if you are running Windows 64 bit.
Switch off the phone. Keeping both the volume buttons pressed, start the phone. Once it shows recovery mode - leave the buttons. In the chinese recovery mode, the volume buttons are used to move up and down and power button to select that option. There is an option which has the word "sideload" - use the volume keys to move down and power button to select.
Connect the USB cable to the computer if not connected already. Start ADB by typing in ADB in the search menu. You will see a command window, there type
Code:
adb devices
It should show some alpha numeric characters and the word sideload. Then type
Code:
adb sideload SuperSU.zip
It will show that the file is being flashed. Once complete, it will show the same recovery menu from the starting. Restart the phone.
Get the latest version of ADB from here : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=42407269. Install this inorder to sideload the SuperSU.zip via ADB.
Chinese CWM : http://d-h.st/Ite
SuperSU.zip : http://d-h.st/u34
Old post - since not relevant have struck it out.One more thing - on opening the upgrade program - click on the "chinese" word and the UI will change to English. Then its a matter of time to goto config and selecting 7268. Downloading recovery as we speak.
@Free Radical - If you can put up screenshots would be great. Also, we need to set date to 1st Aug 2013.
UPDATE : Flashed Chinese CWM and flashed the SuperSU.zip also. I did all this on a Windows 8 x64 machine.
I took a backup of the uninitialized disk using Acronis True Image. Shall definitely come handy if the nvram gets messed up
There seems to be a SMS bug, where any SMS recieved not having a number ie SMS from banks, railways does not get recieved.
Also, this seems weird, but if I have the SIM card in slot #2 and no SIM in slot #1 - two Google services do not work - including Play Store and Google Search/Now. Play store gives me connection error while Google Search FCs after entering a term.
Finally, to check the SMS bug, I enabled SMS within Hangouts. Apparently, the stock messaging app storage is storing the SMS in a different way - in Hangouts, I cannot see the names or numbers of the sending party but shows as 1, 2, .... each sender is a number!
I think the solution to this will be an alternative firmware. i shall try to port MIUI for this device tonight
recovery.fstab
Code:
# mount point fstype device [device2]
/boot emmc /dev/block/mmcblk0p16
/cache ext4 /dev/block/mmcblk0p18
/data ext4 /dev/block/mmcblk0p21 length=-16384
/recovery emmc /dev/block/mmcblk0p13
/system ext4 /dev/block/mmcblk0p17
/sdcard vfat /dev/block/mmcblk1p1 /dev/block/mmcblk1
/emmc vfat /dev/block/mmcblk0p20
/misc emmc /dev/block/mmcblk0p11
/sys_boot vfat /dev/block/mmcblk0p3
/FOTA emmc /dev/block/mmcblk0p19
#/autobak ext4 /dev/block/mmcblk0p25
I made an img file of the recovery and uploaded to the builder clockwork mod app - could not find a specific recovery fstab neither a graphics file.
http://builder.clockworkmod.com/done?build_id=455c8bcbc66cb3c7c588f6fd97558b64. Hoping it gets done soon.
I have never used MIUI so far. Will the dual SIM thing work?
Also, seems like Spice has issued an update for the phone - I disabled the Update apk. Will try to get the new update from spice if possible - lets see. Unfortunately, the address and phone details are incomplete AND Spice CC was not picking up the phone.
Update : Shall be uploading the new CPB file today.

I hope the OP is able to download the same file - I have given him the user/pass/site details of Spice download. I am unable to download the same from home - tried 6 times, getting crc error while extracting and at my office, spice has blocked my ip address.

Should fix the bulk message problem if it was due to kernel issues (don't know whether it is a baseband issue or kernel issue else you'll have to flash the cpb file!)
Have also added init.d support for custom scripts.
Please report back any issues.

Decompress the file with 7zip/WinRAR, and flash the CPB file - the procedure is similar to rooting the phone. Please note, this should bring the phone back to factory condition. And the phone should be updated to the newer firmware
Reason for a 7zip file - its 80MB smaller than the zip file from the Spice site. If anyone wants the original zip file, let me know - AFAIK, you have to flash with the Coolpad tool only.
Also, for those who have issues with the SMS, I am using Hangouts for SMS - it sends message by default on SIM1 only. However, I was getting SMS from my bank - checked. Also, the Message apk is disabled.

Just flashed the phone to the newer firmware - this is the log from the coolpad tool. Could be helpful - looks like the coolpad tool is a container for the Qualcomm flashing tool, maybe?
Also, the default password to reset is 1122
Kernel Source Code

Webkit Source Code (I guess for the internet browser app) : https://drive.google.com/file/d/0ByoBGpu4hq-bOEtHYjZqTDVNQTQ/edit?usp=sharing
Also, some info on Qualcomm stuff - un-bricking the device (which would not happen, mostly) - use Google Translate

Pure awesomeness Vivek. Shall work on it in a few days. I think we can expect overclocking too.
The Webkit source code link is the same as that of the kernel?

I guess so. I got both from the Yulong website - was searching for the source code since I was planning to port an AOSP ROM - The Cool life UI is extremely pathetic. Plus a friend had mentioned to me that they would have uploaded the source code somewhere.
Got them from here : http://www.yulong.com/product/downl...R&downloadInfoBO.downloadInfo.mobileType=7268

That's not a wise request (and I don't think it's legal).
NVDATA contains IMEI information (and you know it). An IMEI is unique for a device. One device, one IMEI. What you're asking is requesting someone else to share their IMEI with you. Two phones with the same IMEI is not legal.
Restore your ORIGINAL NVDATA to get back your original IMEI.

and now I can't start fastboot mode on the phone and the phone can't be turned on.
I try:
- Vol- and usb kable to computer - 30s wait - nothing
- power on buttom - 60s wait - nothing
- https://forum.xda-developers.com/t/hard-reset-nokia-2-2.4000739/#post-81795587 - nothing
What did I do wrong and how to fix it?
Is my phone just for trash, or is it possible to get it working somehow?
Help please.
