What if i update rooted moto g 2015 from marshmallow 6.0 to latest available? - Moto G 2015 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have a rooted moto G 3rd gen with stock rom and marshmallow 6.0. now phone is showing option to upgrade it.?? should i uograde it? what will happen if a upgrade>?

It will fail and you will have a non-bootable device most likely...
You must restore stock recovery and remove root... if you have Xposed installed or made any other changes to system you will have to restore your pre-modification backup in TWRP, or return to pure stock.
No NOT take the update... but if you do and it bootloops, in TWRP clear cache and it should be bootable again.
BTW, what model and android version are you on and what is being offered to you? To my knowledge there are no new updates recently.

[Q] How to update from 4.4.2 to 4.4.4 on rooted Moto G

I have a rooted, Boost Moto G flashed to VZ, running 4.4.2 and would like to upgrade to 4.4.4. I also have TWRP, installed.
Rather than flashing the complete 4.4.4 factory image which, I believe will wipe all my data, I would like to update from the OTA file.
Can this be done with TWRP or must I use fastboot? Will the apps and data be at risk?

[Q] Any updates on image of GPE 5.0.1 Lollipop Image?

Hi all,
About a month ago or so I updated my Moto G 2013 from 4.4.4 GPE to 5.0.1 GPE.
Then I rooted it using Chainfire Autoroot.
What I didn't know back then was that CF auto root screws your stock recovery.. (with all due respect to this great developer)
Auto root also prevents my from installing custom recoveries. (They just won't work).
I faced the same problem on my Nexus 7 2013. That problem could easily be solved by flashing again stock ROM image.
But since there is no 5.0.1 GPE image available for the Moto G it seems impossible to fix this..
Unluckily, Motorola doesn't allow us to downgrade to KitKat or Jelly Bean. (Yes.. I know there are ways to downgrade by skipping some commands, but there are several reports that it will cause screen flickering because the new Lollipop bootloader doesn't work properly on stock Kitkat ROM.)
So I guess I'm pretty stuck right know.
I guess factory resetting my phone would already hard brick the phone (because of the bricked stock recovery by cf auto root)
I would like to have Lollipop 5.0.1 GPE with TWRP recovery, so I can install custom kernels etc.
Do I have to wait for the Lollipop image? Or are there other ways of reaching my goal?
Any idea when we can expect the image to be released?
Thanks in advance!
I installed stock KK on a my Telus moto g with the L bootloader and the flickering was still be there. Just don't flash the motoboot.img file in fastboot.
I always found that the easiest way to get root is to flash supersu from a custom recovery.

[Q] is it safe ?

I have converted my moto g to gpe. I've literally love the speed of 5.1 and can't go back.. Since all ROMs for 5.1 are buggy(at least for me) I've decided to try official ota gpe. I know I should revert back to stock kitkat gpe which is easy but I'm afraid the ota update for lollipop might brick my device since it's not gpe and that it already has lollipop bootloader from dual sim moto g. Is it possible to do this without running into fatal issues ?
It's not worth the risk. Moto G is getting old now, if you brick; there might not be a firmware image to get you out of it. I will create a flashable zip when a TWRP backup is available.

alright then, i will wait for a stable lollipop 5.1 build. Thanks !
YOu can flash the 4.4.4 firmware and OTA it to 5.0.1
but if u flash 4.42 firmware,ur phone will be hard bricked
So whats u have to do is
flash 4.4.4---->flash 5.0.1---->flash 5.1
voila

Confusion with official Marshmallow upgrade for rooted stock rom

I flashed TWRP recovery and rooted my Moto g3 XT1550 but im on stock ROM itself. Now I got a OTA notification of Marshmallow update.
So, can I download the OTA & install it without unrooting or flashing stock recovery?

No! There should be no confusion here, the ONLY possible modification that can be done to your phone where you can accept a OTA update is an unlocked bootloader, NOTHING else. No Root, no TWRP, no Xposed... Your software status should show official and if the /system partition has been modified it will fail. PERIOD.
You cannot install an OTA without returning to PURE stock, not just unrooting and flashing stock recovery, you need to have an unmodified /system partition (root and then unroot is still a modified /system partition). Flash the factory image that matches your current software, then take the OTA, and flash TWRP and root again.

Installing update in rooted stock ROM

I just received the latest update to my Moto G (221.201.2.en.CA), which is just the March monthly security patch. I have Stock 5.1, rooted and with some pre-installed apps (Google Books, Hangouts...) uninstalled (and Stock Recovery). Is there any way to flash the update without making a factory reset or maybe any using a Custom Recovery? Otherwise I will consider seriously moving on to a MM ROM.
Thank you so much!
