Hello xda community i'm planning to buy an s7 but since it cost a lot i've an important question for you...if my device is stolen the chance that i will get the phone back is high or low? I mean...would the police help me to track my phone or they will only call my carrier to blacklist the IMEI

If you live in Brazil, I can give you an answer. But I'm sure this is a very relative question.

That's a very hard question to answer, as we have no idea how your local police will handle it. If its locked with fingerprint, pattern etc, the thief won't be able to turn it off so that means that it will stay on for a couple hours and you will be able to track it. Then I guess you can call the police, but I would advice you to not go without the police as you might get in more trouble.
If you cant locate it, your carrier will blacklist it.

Hmmm I was wrong, unfortunately you can turn it off even when the screen is locked. My bad.
I don't know if you can locate your phone when its turned off.

No,you can't the only way to locate it is with samsung and/or google account but unfortunately with factory reset it will be wiped off, i know that there is Frp (Factory Reset Protection) to prevent the account from being deleted but there are bypass that make it useless because even if they get patched an expert thief could downgrade the firmware with odin and a firmware from sammobile...so the only ways to are:
1)the thief is not an expert
2)the police or carrier track the phone using imei number...
Since the first possibility not always happen, what i was asking for is if the police or carrier will spend time on tracking my phone or not

Wouldn't it be better to ask the police and your carrier, rather than a forum who can't speak for either party?
Seems a strange thing to be thinking about before even buying it, do you get a lot of things stolen from you regularly?

Easy enough to keep in your pocket when you're out, and if you can't, leave it at home

I was at the gym yesterday and apparently I might have left it there by mistake, I went to the htc sense site to track it down but apparently they 'renovated it' and now you can't track it! Is there any way I can track it down after its lost (or stolen I guess)?
I downloaded Plan B but apparently it didn't install correctly or something because I didnt get any email yet (probably since there isn't any wifi where the phone is)
Quite a stupid move from htc to shut down such a good feature like that :/
Sorry for your loss, that really sucks dude. HTC did warn people they were going to remove that feature a couple of months ago. I rather liked it as well. The only other thing I can think of right now is, try having your service provider track it down using the phones gps. Sometimes it works. Good luck.

Well Im gonna go to the police station tomorrow, they SHOULD be able to track it down, but I highly doubt their efficiency -.-'
Thanks mate : ) Also, from now onwards, I'm installing Prey on every device I own!
Uh the police won't find ****. Call your carrier and find out the insurance company if sprint or Verizon its asurion or similar. I hope ya got insurance I don't think $6 a month is bad.

Vodafone doesn't track phones where I live, only the police do that. They are successful (sometimes) but not in my past cases haha.
Oh well, we'll see what'll happen.

Really? By saying lost I was being polite. If I really just lost it at the gym it would be on the machine where I left it on, which it wasn't the next day. Whoever took it took off the sim card cos it wont dial and I had it charged an hour before gym so the battery should still be working.
So yes, still think its just 'lost'?

You left it somewhere, someone picked it up, YOUR FAULT! It's not stolen and whoever has it would not be prosecuted for picking it up. Maybe you should pay more attention to your $500 piece of technical equipment. Only a truly entitled person would believe that the police should take time away from investigating murders, kidnappings, and assaults, to find their phone. Is your phone that important? Is this what you are telling us?

Maybe he should pay more attention but you cannot say it is his fault somebody took it and didn't give it to the gyms reception or to the police. I would do so if I found something lost. In my opinion they should track it because stealing is a crime too, isn't it.

Indeed I did, well I had a custom rom so maybe he'd find it difficult due to the different drivers that might not be compatible with what he's used to. Also, I contacted support and they said the phone can be 'locked' if I give them the IMEI and Serial Number, which I did. lets see what will happen!

Wouldn't the phone just be locked out? I'm also curious... if it was used in a different country/provider, would it work? I would assume it'd work since the chances of your provider blocking the IMEI in the entire earth would be unlikely! If so, the answers seem pretty straightforward as to what will happen lol. Either it'll get sold or just not be usable!

Nono HTC told me they will block the phone themselves, so apparently it should be unusable worldwide I hope!
If it is in the wrong hands then it has probably been torn down and used for parts at this point. It's become a growing trend around here with lots of aftermarket repair companies getting busted for being nothing more than chop shops...
Well, here's what they said after giving them my IMEI number
"Dear sir again, we are really sorry for what happened with your device and we apologize for the inconvenience regarding HTCSense functionality. We will enter your data in our system, and we will list your device as stolen one. As soon as somebody tries to contact us with this data we will notify the authorities.
Thank you for your patience and understanding. "
Hmm, so here's the story.
My mom's SGH-1927R got stolen today in transit . The phone had no tracking apps installed. It doesn't have packet data and the GPS too is turned off. She has changed passwords for all the accounts linked to that phone.
We have lodged a complaint with the local police as well but that's pretty much useless back here anyway.
So, what i'd want to know is that is there any way i can track that phone? I have access to the main account that was used to sign in to that phone? I also have the IMEI and the cell number?
Hoping for an answer...

The only thing I would that you didn't mention is file a report with your carrier as well! If the phone is still active, they MIGHT be able to some how track it to a specific location........NOW this is a HUGE maybe but is worth a shot!
Make sure to include in your report with your mom's carrier that you filed a police report as they might be useful to them.
Unfortunately things like this happen almost everyday and more frequently during the holidays BUT hopefully you'll get some kind of help!
GOOD LUCK dude!
thanks for the reply.
contacting the carrier is the first thing on my agenda for tommorow.

I couldn't reach support. Open a few tickets but nobody contact me. I reach them via chat but they said me phone is blacklisted and a lot of "mother ****er, **** off, etc". They don't give me money back.
They give guarantee theandroiddoctor_com/imei-guarantee

Because they aren't a true professional shop, they are someone that does this from their home. They don't care about whether your phone works, they only care about getting paid and they didn't do the right thing because they didn't want to pay for messing your device up because they don't have a true business like a true professional would.
That's what you get for trying to save money to get it done and trusting someone that you found on the internet instead of taking your device to a trusted and reputable professional shop, you get what you pay for, it's your own fault for being stupid enough to trust someone you found online.
You made a bad decision and now you're paying the price, get over it, move on and learn a lesson from it. Posting here isn't changing anything.

Regarding the Note 5, the phone can be restored to factory conditions by downloading Samsung Kies. Once downloaded fire up the software, select "tools" followed by "firmware upgrade and initialisation". Then connect your phone and the software will download all the necessary files, including the latest updates. I know this because they screwed my phone's IMEI during a unlock process, probably hoping they would squeeze more money out of me for a IMEI repair. Kies solved my IMEI problem, and their unlock wasn't affected by the Kies update (their unlock worked). These are unsavoury people who had access to my computer and phone while they carried out their half a job. Hindsight is a wonderful thing....

On Android phones when you sell or decommission them you have to manually remove the Google account that is on the phone prior to resetting the phone. It is theft protection.
You need the original Google account that was used, set that account back up and then remove it.
If you don't have or can't get that account info then yes, it's a parts phone.

That's kind of nuts in a way. Not for individuals but for a medium size company that probably bought the phone from Google or Verizon. Couldn't they call the seller and prove the phone was bought by them and get it reset or RMA'd?

Any chance they used a company Gmail email (that you may be able to access) so you can send a reset password email to yourself? If not, I would contact Verizon/Google depending on how the phone was purchased. Otherwise, the web is your friend for unverified unlock methods but not XDA.

Go to Samsung find my mobile it doesn't matter if they turned the location off or not Samsung has a way of turning it back on now to find the phone.. At least it did to mine because I had the location turned off and I used my Note 8 to test out the find my mobile and it turned the location on by itself and accurately pinpointed the phone!
Vid can still reveal the critical eye to eye to nose measurements as well as gait. If they're on a crime spree they may screw up.
If you have the serial number see if Samsung keeps a list of stolen phones. Canon does for cams and lens.
Police as well of course.

Best to always keep it with you if not in a secure spot.
Where I'm at they'll steal anything that's not anchored with concrete.
I wear cargo pants, a vest pocket sometimes and have a belt clip as well.

I just saw someone posting something about Chimera tool and i ended up reading about it. While I knew that its possible to change IMEI, i didnt know that it has become so easy now. You better claim that insurance as i am pretty sure that those thieves will use some tool like that to change IMEI and Reset the software.

And also report your IMEI to Samsung as being stolen so they can blacklist it.

Sad times for me
Anything special i have to do? should i call my bank to cancel my card that's linked to samsung pay or is there no point?
But just for curiosity, what do theives do with stolen phones that are locked.
I have fingerprint/pattern lock on it so hopefully they can't unlock it.

Just blacklist the IMEI, once blacklisted they can only use it as a wifi device - can't be used as a phone.

but for cctv i doubt that would help in any way, all were wearing hoodies and probably face covered now for covid

If you are physically capable, i would highly recommend Krav Maga. I have amazing stories of how it helped me, i would suggest learning that.
