can i update a rooted device? - Samsung Galaxy S7 Questions and Answers

my device is currently rooted and i just recieved an update from samsung. i am using a super kernel v1.4 and i would like to update to the lastest version which requires this update from samsung. can i update my device ota or must i download the firmware from sammobile and reflash everything then install everything else again. if i am able to update the phonr ota can i also just flash the new kernel to replace the old one? i want a clean install.

OTA won't work on a custom device (Rooted / Kernel / Recovery), I'm surprised you even got the notification for an update tbh
You'll have to update manually when the firmware arrives as a flashable ROM

[Q] Install security update on Rooted phone

HTC has released an OTA security update with a size of around 9 MB but since my phone is rooted and CWModded I get the triangle with Android icon on installation. How do i get it to install?
I am currently on 1.45 stock firmware (2.3.4 core) and this update has probably to do with the problematic permissions of HTC's apps that came to light some days ago
Flash the stock recovery then try again

does that have to be done for every update? or are they included with flashed roms?
is it possible to flash it via cwm somehow?
*edit*
nvm i already flashed/reflashed stock recovery and updated
cheers
Found an easier way
Got the instructions from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=15546045&postcount=10
Tried it and works perfectly without restoring-reinstalling CW recovery.

[Q] Cannot Update to New OTA VRALHE

Ok, I am running a stock rom rooted with no frozen apps. When the OTA tries to install it fails and when I try to use Kies the message " Your device does not support the update of Software via Kies" or something to that effect. I have never unlocked the bootloader, flash roms, or installed custom recovery on the device. Could I possible use OTA rootkeeper to unroot then check to see if the OTA will download and install? If that does work would I be able to restore the root? I don't guess I really need the new OTA but I want to be able to get JB when it comes out without any issues. Just as an added not it is currently running VRALG7...

[Q] OTA Updates to Stock ROM w/ Non-Stock Kernel and Recovery

Hey everyone,
So for the past couple of days I've been getting the notification that 5.1.1 has been downloaded and is ready to install, but I'm running a rooted stock ROM with CWM and ElementalX kernel, so I wasn't sure what would happen if I accepted the update. So my question to you all is just that; what will happen if I OTA update? I would imagine I'll lose root access and have to re-root, but would the OTA also flash a stock kernel and get rid of CWM? Or will the update create a load of problems since I'm not completely stock?
Thanks in advance for your help.
The OTA update will fail.
As of Lollipop, you have to have everything completely stock (including the recovery) to take an OTA update. You're better off just flashing another pre-rooted ROM or custom ROM which has been updated to 5.1.1.

OTA OC3

If I use Odin to flash this(which should be last OTA) can I then root with PingPong?

Also is there just an update file I can flash instead?
I just rooted OE2 with ping-pong so your all good!
And now you can't flash an update file
You can't flash an update when rooted, but the Verizon Update Assistant software, or Samsung's neW KIES replacement software (can't remember the name) you can flash a new update and wipe phone like new, so you lose nothing by rooting!
I was rooted in Stock firmware and now I'm on the latest firmware and rooted!

Flashing new OTA update on rooted MotoG3

Motorola has released new OTA update of 371.4 MB in India.
I read that since I am a rooted user I must not try to flash this update.
I would like the help from xda to install these updates. Should I install stock firmware 6.0.1 first?
Two ways to do it
1. Flash stock ROM 6.0from factory firmware link. Allow ota to download and phone should upgrade to 6.0.1
2. Flash the 6.0.1 stock ROM which is made available in factory firmware link. -Update: 6.0.1 is already the updated system with the new ota of 371mb.
Option 2 is more convenient.
While upgrading to mm 6.0 via ota, on my rooted phone I had tried flashing the stock recovery and cleaning the root. but it did not help and I landed with a soft bootloop. The ota checks for the original fingerprint of the stock system which is why you need to be on stock firmware for the ota update method.
You need stock recovery and stock firmware.
