Do I need unl. bootloader to root? - Galaxy S6 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
I'm using Samsung S6 with stock software and would like to root it using CF-Auto-root. My question is whether I need to unlock bootloader first or is it safe to flash image from CF-Auto-root site by ODIN?
I don't care about knox. I'm O.K. with tripping it. Just don't want to brick the phone.
Baseband G920FXXU3DPDP,
Build number MMB29K.G920FXXU3DPDP
Kernel version - 3.10.61-7884513, [email protected]#1
security patch 01 may 2016
Any help appreciated.

Thanks for info. You're right. I've just rooted my S6 using CF-AutoRoot. Looking forward to install TWRP and some good alternative ROM.

1. No
2. Yes, you'll come back to original firmware with all working features. The only thing will never change is knox counter, visible in download mode. It will remain to 0x01 (or something like that) and assistance, whenever you' ll need them, could see you modded the phone...
With changed knox counter, you can't use Pay again.
It happened with my s6.

Galaxy S7 TELSTRA root.

Hi,
I recently updated my S7 (Australian Telstra model) and can't find any rooting available for it. Has anyone got a root out for Build Number: MMB29K.G930FXXU1BPIT yet? Baseband version is G930FXXU1BPIQ and when I click 'Software Update' it checks for a latest software and tells me it's the latest already with the current version: G930FXXU1BPIT/G930FTEL1BPIT/G930FXXU1BPIQ.
I also hear alot about 'tripping knox' when you root a Galaxy S7. Can someone please explain what is meant by this?
Thanks in advance.
Yes, knox WILL be tripped for the international model of the S7. No way to avoid that. Tripped knox counter means void warranty

Official 7.0 downgrade 6.0.1 possible?

Hello Guys. The new 7.0 BTU firmware for g930f downgrade 6.0.1 is possible? Knox warranty 0x0?
Yes it possible and it dont trigger knox. But why the hell you wanna downgrade? Nougat is so much better than MM

Thanks for fast reply. Can you try the downgrade? I would like to know before I flash that it works.
You want us to do the dirty work for you? Who are you? Why is your phone and your time more valuable than ours? You have all instructions here on XDA and do it yourself. Its not hard.

I asked only that someone had tried to downgrade. You do not have to do a jerk style comment.
Yes you can downgrade back to Marshmallow using ODIN or SmartSwitch, KNOX 0x0

The Answer is; Yes you can!
But, this can only be done on international Galaxy S7, S7 edge variants, including the American and Canadian version, but except to those device with built in “locked bootlooader” such as the Verizon and AT&T Galaxy S7, S7 edge models or we can say models with Snapdragon Processor.
Devices with unlocked bootloaders can be freely downgrade-able, but those with highly secured bootloader cannot be messed around.
As long as you flash the original firmware with ODIN, you'll not have any problem for unlocked bootloaders.
Download the Firmware from Sammobile or use SamFirm. Flash it through ODIN and you are good to go.:good:

Help rooting Canadian Galaxy S6

Basically I have a Canadian S6 (sm-G920W8) and I'm looking to root it. On chainfires autoroot for my device the last 5 characters of the Build ID's do not match (my build ID is: mmb29k.g920w8vlu5cpk4).
Does anybody know if there is a root method that works for my phone? Btw I'm on 6.0.1.
Thanks
You can root your phone with CF-Auto-Root without a problem. The root's build ID don't have to match your build ID.

I did this trying to go from a Verizon to Unlocked. Also, tried going to T-Mobile. I left off User Data on the unlocked variant, but nothing changed even though it showed successful. Any help?!
I am having to drive to a friend's to do this on a Windows computer because I can't figure it out on my Mac. $10 if anyone can simplify how to do it on a Mac. I'm use to using ADB, not Odin.

Why didn't you flash Userdata? Thats what contains the carrier bloat. Flash the U1 userdata and see if that works.
Tried that too

Those of us on the Verizon network with the old unlimited data plan can't tether without paying an extra $30 a month. If we can successfully load the unlocked firmware on the Verizon variant we can bypass the tether subscription.....
does anyone know when will the U1 bootloader will be updated to V2?
Will this unlock any g965u?

It was already unlocked but the dude that did it was kinda sloppy. It seemed to have quite a lot of compatibility issues. Original carrier info was listed under the settings. All seems great now.

Just got my S9+ from Samsung (won in a contest via their Twitter) anyhow...they asked which device I wanted, I said Unlocked model, they sent a Tmobile variant, and it is unlocked as I am using it another carrier sim... I carrier switched 2 different S8+ last year and I don't find myself on here much anymore, other than to answer emails and help people fix their stuff.... Just wondering if I can still just flash the XAA or the XAR version firmware files via patched Odin and all will be well.
The tmobile variant isn't really bloated perse, but it does have a couple tmobile apps that I would prefer to get rid of and I'd prefer to have it on U1 firmware, are there any issues to do it currently?
One other question... What's the difference between the XAA and XAR firmware? I've used the XAA in the past for the s8+ g55u1 but this phone has both firmware files and I can't figure out where there is both, as to my knowledge both are unlocked firmware files.
Thanks
Jessica

Have you updated your phone yet? The Unlocked is still stuck on February Patch and hasn't been updated whereas T-Mobile already pushed the June update out IIRC and you won't be able to flash it.
Honestly, keep the T-Mo variant as even the Unlocked Model comes with bloat like Facebook.

It's not using a tmobile sim so that's probably why it hasn't updated..... so it's still on the feb 25 kernel, build is still the 1ARBG firmware.
I just don't like the lack of mobile data toggle and I want to get rid of the tmobile bloat.
Ah gotcha, you should be good to flash using the Patched Odin then.

Stupid question. So I did the firmware flash, originally had the 965u. So now when we are finally able to root(if ever) do I have to look for roms(or any other hacks) for the 965u or the 965u1 since that's what I flashed? Also I received the June update the other day. Hopefully that doesn't screw anything up for me.
