Hello I'm posting on behalf of my sister who is having issues with the SD being set as internal memory in Android Marshmallow. The device is a factory unlocked device and currently has a Class 10 16Gb Sanddisk micro-SD card.
We have also tried a slower Class 4 card (same capacity) and am still having issues. I think the phone has been dropped a few times but these issues are annoying my sister so I was wondering if we should do an RMA or is this behaviour common?
But what was the exact problem you/she faced?

What is the problem exactly?
And BTW, a Class 10 card is not fast enough for internal memory, a Class 4 will downright either frustrate you or flat out cause errors... If you're going to use it as internal (adopted) storage, you need a quality, brand name card with a minimum UHS1 rating, but a UHS3 card is preferred.
The device is saying that the SD card cannot be found randomly and due to this deletes apps / stuff stored on internal storage.
And a UHS 1 is equal to a class 10 card

No, just a class 10 card is not equal to a modern UHS1 card, not even close... The minimum speeds are similar, but in real life the read, and more importantly write, speeds are 4-8 times that of just a class 10 rating, especially for extended periods of read or write. https://www.dpreview.com/forums/thread/3221163 Trust me, in real world especially when used for internal memory the difference is quite noticeable.
But back to the problem... Assuming you have tried clearing the cache partition in recovery, and possibly a factory reset, Most of the time this issue of random disconnection goes back to one of two things, a poor quality microSD card or poor connection of the phones card reader. The first one is easy to test, pickup a Samsung EVO+, SanDisk Extreme, Lexar 633x, or similar high quality card and test, if it still fails then there isn't anything you can do about except contact Moto customer service for repair.

Did you ever find a fix?? I had the same issue with two phones. It would say the card ejected and id have to restart to correct it. I have used 4 different cards including a UHS-1 class 10. It has to be a software issue. Wonder if this feature worked in 6.0 and stopped in 6.0.1?? Maybe fix in Nougat? What a pain!

If this is the case that you have tried several cards, it's probably a handset hardware issue, not a software issue... Nougat likely won't fix it.

Hmm I've been using 32gb ones. The phone works perfectly with portable storage so it blows my mind the issues that is has with ejecting or saying the card isn't there. If it was physical you'd see it with portable storage as well I believe. Do any of the custom Roms give more user space? Once again thank you!

I think the biggest problem people actually have is with the Class 10 speed rating. Just the other day, after posting here that I didn't have any problems, I had some write issues (with taking pictures and saving files) that are probably attributed to using a Class 10 card in mine. Hopefully Motorola sorts this out with an update to ICS (if us AT&T users ever see it).
As it is, the general recommendation is Class 4 or 6 for an Atrix 2, AFAIK.
Cheers.
i already know of this it seems adjusting the sd cache
helps a bit
I already bought 2 times sd ultra 32gb class 6 n 10 from Sandisk..used it only less than a week n then corrupted..now im using sdcars 32gb class 10 brand kingmax..used it for a month n no problem occur..tq. (illneverlookbacktosandisk)

If you have not had any problems with a Class 10 card you are probably the only person not to have issues or your issues will be starting soon.
Class 2 and 4 sd cards are the only ones that will work without problems in the Atrix 2. People that have been testing the ICS leaks are having the same problem with sd cards as they did with gb. This appears to be a hardware issue with this phone and there is no amount of software work around that will fix it.

The two Class 6 cards I have get errors after having connected to a PC via USB and then disconnecting. This isn't specific to a particular Atrix 2, I am on my third one.

I am ejecting. But the main thing here is that there is a hardware problem with the sd card reader.
There are a couple of different hardware builds of the phone. Some can use up to class 6 and some can only go up to class 4. Just like some have wifi and bluetooth problems and some don't.
My second Atrix 2 didn't have wifi or bluetooth connectivity issues but it had a buzzy phone speaker which is one of the reasons it was replaced.

Just a heads-up to anyone who might be buying this card as it's extremely popular on amazon
Seems to be some issues with the gs4 - it keeps on mounting/dismounting by itself and generally being buggy.
Before anyone flames me, I'm aware this is a well documented issue already with the gs3, and indeed there were some 'dodgy' sandisk cards that sandisk fixed in a SEPARATE issue.
However, I've used two different ones of THIS particular card, bought recently, and in two different gs4's, and the problem has arised in both. So you do the maths. Just a heads up in case anyone is worried it's a problem with their card - it isn't.

I have a 32GB SandDisk Micros SD HC which has intermittent reading problems. Switching off the phone and taking out the Micro SD for a few seconds and putting it back and rebooting the phone solves the problem. This has only happened to me 3x ever since I owned the phone. I'm not sure if this is the Micro SD or the ROM's fault. Putting the Micro SD in my Note 2 works perfectly.

SanDisk Ultra 64 GB MicroSDXC Class 10 UHS-1 Memory Card with Adapter (SDSDQU-064G-AFFP-A)
Have had it in my phone since May 1st, use it for videos, music, among a few other things. Lives in my phone except when it's in my laptop for file transfers.
And out of all that, I've had absolutely zero problems, at least so far. I know it's the 64 GB, not the 32 GB model, but just thought I'd add my experience to the thread.

Hey fellow S4 users,
I just got my new micro SD card today and followed some guides here to remove the unallocated part and also to format it to fat32. After doing all this I checked my card and it says that there is about 58gb of free space even though there are no files on it. I was wondering whether this is normal? Or did I mess up somewhere in the process?
Thanks in advance!

I believe this has to do with the discrepancy in definition of a Gigabyte. Read here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gigabyte
You essentially have 64GB in the Base 10 definition, but around 58GB in the Base 2 definition.

Slightly unrelated, but has anyone had any trouble with Sandisc Ultra (10) 64GB, I've owned 2, the first no longer works at all, the second quite often refuses to allow me to copy anything to it. Both are official, both purchased from different companies. Both tested in Galaxy s2 and S4 with same results. Both tried with fat32 and with exfat (on Pac rom which supports exfat). Also when removed from phone and plugged into pc directly, I can copy files across, as long as I don't copy too much at once or eventually it fails the copy and stops.
Anyone any similar experiences?

The "unmounting SD card" problem has more to do with the kernel than anything else. I've had a SanDisk card and it's worked fine with the KT kernel -- so there's really no need to buy a Samsung card.
I started to buy one from Amazon on black Friday. I put it in my cart and forgot about it. Now the price has jumped back up. What a dummy.
I suggest that you get the SanDisk Ultra 64GB, lifetime warranty and no hassle using it.
I have the SanDisk Ultra 64GB and it works great in 4.2.2, but then with 4.3 and 4.4 I had to root the phone to modify platform.xml to allow apps to save files to the SD card. Works for me since I have the Google Play Edition and it's moderately easy to root the phone, but it still messes with over the air updates, so I can't say that I actually recommend anyone else doing the same, unless you like to tinker.
Hey MPCookson, could you give me some info on how you modified the xml to get the 64GB cards to work on 4.4 roms...ive searched and searched for methods to get this to work and have been unsuccessful with everything ive tried...reformatted the card to exfat, tried every 4.4 rom out there and cant get it to pick up my card...any insight would be VERY helpful!

The unmounting only happens if your kernal doesn't support exfat sd cards. Only fat32. Stock kernal and kt kernals support exfat that I know of but others like ptmr's doesn't. So it's not an sd card issue.

Had a problem with a sandisk 32gb (1 year old). Was trying different formats fat32 / exfat with supported kernel. But then it started to get unexpectedly removed very frequently. Fortunately it seemed working good in other devices (pc, tablet). I backed up everything and started a RMA. They told my card was defective and accepted it as a damaged card (I tried to fix it formatting without success). I have read some bad reviews about sandisk cards but I think this issue was only affected by some batches. I really liked theirs RMA support and I bought a new one (64gb this time). Hope it lasts more than the other one.

not working for me, at&t variant. my id shows 179,0, not 179:XXX.
That might be a blessing. My first question was going to be how much of a performance hit did you take? It would be nice to have the option though.
Curious what the performance hit is too.
the reason why it failed was cuz card is "too slow". using that sandisk 200gb card. i have a samsung 64gb pro + card in my g4, and apparently this also works for that too. tried it and success.
At least there is apparently still a safeguard to prevent most of the people crippling their phone with cheap SD cards. I hope that when Samsung adds this officially, it will limit it to at least UHS 1 U3 cards.
The whole phone memory will be only as fast as the SD inside

It won't get that fast reads since it is limited to UHS-I so up to 90/MB reads/writes. Internal memory is in the 200 MB/s range so yes, it will be a huge downgrade if you use the adoptable storage.
I would like an answer for this: if I`m opening a file from sdcard (Samsung 32GB class10) and editi it, when I try to save it again, I can only do it on phone storage. Why? My sdcard it`s listed in storage like SD Card(7CD-1711)
Can someone explain, please, and tell me what to do so I will be able to save my files to sd card?

Thanks in advance

Today I purchased a 64 GB Samsung Pro+ (Plus) micro sd card. It says it has up to: 95 MB/s read & 90 MB/s write. I benched it at 50/40 today. I manually set the adoptable storage following the procedure outlined in the MoDaco post. I used the info returned by the command that tells you what is available to use as adoptable. It worked, but is also returning a wrong storage total (I believe that the reason for this is because the SD card basically gets filled with a file that can be encrypted, so the total amount of storage that your SD card has gets added to the storage total both as it's actual space and as the file size, this is a guess but seams somewhat plausible). I am getting 73.64 GB used out of 128 GB. I have 32 internal and 64 on the sd but only 59.14. So max is 96 but it says 128 total and a lot used.
I just done this looks like it worked with a sandisk 200gb memory card but if i install a app now where will it install?. And also whats the option under storage more and migrate data for? do we need to do that?

It won't get that fast reads since it is limited to UHS-I so up to 90/MB reads/writes. Internal memory is in the 200 MB/s range so yes, it will be a huge downgrade if you use the adoptable storage.

90MB/s is nice when talking about sequential reads, but most microsd cards are going to be around 10x slower than UFS in small random reads/writes, which is where most of your phones performance is going to come from in terms of storage IO.
I think doing this stops downloading certain apps can someone try amazon sholppig or netflix says its not compatable with your device since i done this adoptable storage.
