Trick to backup and restore with twrp on sm-j700p cause recovery not booting system - Samsung Galaxy J7 Questions & Answers

I found it is possible to backup and restore with twrp for sm-j700p even though the recovery is not booting into system. What i did was flash twrp... then made a backup... then rebooted into download mode.. then flashed stock recovery and then the system boot up. How i restored my backup was to reflash twrp and select restore backup then reflashed the stock recovery... odin is required for this.. im only doing this until the recovery is able to boot into system...

how do i get out of my boot loop i tried factory wipe and all the roms i could find. j700p boost mobile

Bump!

I am releasing today a updated version of TWRP for the Samsung Galaxy J700P. This project was rebuilt by me using the 6.01 Stock Kernel instead of the 5.1 kernel that is used in the first release. I also noticed that in the original TWRP the partitions were not setup correctly for backup. If you did a backup in the first copy it had EFS as a option in the backup list and when you select that and do a restore it will cause the phone to soft brick to the point even the stock rom couldn't fix it. The EFS partition wasn't restoring correctly due the configuration in the recovery.FSTAB it was erasing the modemst1 and modemst2 partitions so i reconfigured the FSTAB to support all partitions on the phone itself enabling you to make the correct backups/restores of the phone. I renamed the assert to it's default name which is j7ltespr so it makes it even easier to make custom roms flash correctly without error. Remember this is still in BETA i will be releasing a FINAL build very very soon.
REQUIREMENTS:
Odin 3.10/3.11(For Flashing TWRP)

Samsung galaxy s6 Stuck in bootloop (SW REW CHECK FAIL. DEVICE: 3 BINARY: 2)

I have recently rooted my Galaxy S6.I rooted it succesfully,Then I flashed TWRP with Flashify. The app wanted me to restart the phone..I restarted it, and it got stuck in a bootloop. My Android version is 5.1.1.I tried to flash the stock ROM through ODIN and I got this error:"SW REW CHECK FAIL.DEVICE:3 BINARY: 2"....I ran out of ideas, someone please help me to 'bring it back to life'.The phone was bought 7 days ago, if that matters.
Thanks in advance.

Update it via Smart Switch.
Did the suggestion work?
Nope when I open smart switch it says connect your device..and it gets ejected
had the same odin flash error weeks ago
that's what i did
flash custom revovery trough odin, twrp or philz (should still work without failed error)
"adb push c:\x /sdcard/ " with your PC (x= folder with the files you need on your phone)
Flash the rom / kernel , no more bootloop
you can also flash the newest bootloader+modem for your model number, after that i could flash the newest stock-rom again
Could you pad11 give me a video?I'm a newbie and it'd be very useful for me
Smart Switch is the solution, click on "Emergency software recovery" or something like that, it will ask for model and serial number, the phone must be on download mode.
I had bootloop and bootfreeze, Smart Switch saved me like 3 times already...

first try to format /system in twrp, look in the mount tap if /system is mounted .
if this is not working ... try philz recovery provided from arter97 -> http://arter97.com/browse/S6/kernel/9.3/ choose your model-number, the zip is for flash in twrp, md5 file is for odin flash.

Help! I may failed to root my Mate9

Hi, thank you for watch my thread. I am not native English speaker, so there may have some mistakes.
I installed TWRP and SuperSU but when I boot , my Mate9 is auto-restarting.
Finally the screen shows Huawei ERecovery.
What I should do?

SuperSU flashed from the "how to root without decrypted boot image"?
And did you Format Data in TWRP?
If not that's why. The phone won't boot if your data partition is encrypted, and your kernel is not told to decrypt it.
Please note that Format Data will wipe your internal storage.

Thank you for your reply!
First, I will write how I try to root my Mate9.
1.I opened boot loader with using adb and fastboot.
2. I installed TWRP 3.0.2-2
3. And then I had selected "Advanced wipe", and erased "Data".
4. I installed SuperSU from "Install" button.
5.Finally I rebooted.
>>The phone won't boot if your data partition is encrypted, and your kernel is not told to decrypt it.
Really!? Then how can I fix my phone?
You must flash data via twrp recovery.
dear experts, i am newbie. i have a mate9. can anyone be kind to walk thru with me the rooting process?

Oh. So you didn't Format Data, you wiped data?
You could try and restore your stock boot image. But I don't think that will help. If you don't have a backup of boot, download your firmware from hwmt.ru/hwmtsite/firmware-database/ and extract update.app from the zip. Download Huawei Update Extractor and run it.
Open up update.app in Huawei Update Extractor. Right click on BOOT and click on Extract Selected.
Flash the extracted boot image in download mode:
fastboot flash boot boot.img
If boot image doesn't help:
In TWRP, go to advanced and then tap on Terminal and
cd /data
ls /data
Post what it says.
If it can't mount data at all or if boot image restore doesn't help you might need to flash back stock firmware,

[Recovery Release] Working TWRP for Sony L1 (G3311 Single SIM others to be confirmed)

Requirements:
1. Bootloader Must Be Unlocked.
2. Have a backup of your working Magisk Patched boot.img saved to your External SDcard.A little INFO:
The Sony L1 recovery seems to be disabled by SONY for some unknown and Probably stupid reason.
I have tried all ways to get the TWRP and Stock recovery to boot up from the fotakernel partition (recovery) but TWRP and even the stock recovery refuse to boot.
Anyway to cut a very long story short I am releasing this TWRP which is 95% functional and needs to be flashed to the boot partition
Working Method/flow:
Make sure you have a Back up of your working Boot.img "You know the one you used to root the device in the first place".
For ease of use You can use this app by XDA dev @wanam (Thread here) app on playstore Here You can also use this app to flash the v5-twrp-l1.img to your "boot" partition or you can go old skool and use dd (Via adb shell) or use the Magisk patched_boot.img you first rooted with..
Make SURE to Copy this working boot.img to your External SDcard.
When you require TWRP flash the downloaded TWRP to your boot partition using Fastboot (cmd's below) or the above app then reboot
You will now boot to TWRP.
Do what you need to do in TWRP.
IMPORTANT:
Remember Just before you leave TWRP go to INSTALL choose your external SDCard choose "image" from the install screen find your boot.img and select "boot" with the little radio button.
Once flashed choose reboot system.
Now when you boot you will be back to normal :good:
Things Not Working:
1. You will not be able to mount encrypted data therefore you would need to FORMAT your data and then leave it unencrypted.
SuperSU and Magisk will disable forceencrypt for you.
2. Does not Charge or show battery % so I don't know if it's actually charging. (Probably Qnovo battery module used by sony)
It will probably work on all variants but I am not able to test that.
It's use is for backups and restores wipes and installs for which it seems fully functional. :good:
Install Instructios.
Boot to the bootloader then
Code:
fastboot flash boot v5-twrp-l1.img
Then
Code:
fastboot reboot
Download HERE v5-twrp-l1.img
Hi @bigrammy!! I have it booting ok, obviously encryption is not working! I was able to do a backup but couldn't boot back into system, just keeps going back to twrp! I had to flashi the patched 3313 boot image from another post to get back into system! Good work though! Tested on g3311

Ok maybe I should update the OP as it seems it's not really clear enough that obviously the boot is replaced by the recovery.
Method would be make sure you have a Back up your working Boot.img You know the one you used to root the device in the first place.
You can also use dd (Via adb shell) or a app from the playstore or better still use the Magisk patched_boot.img .
Copy this working boot.img to your External SDcard.
When required flash the recovery to your boot partition using Fastboot then reboot
You will now boot to TWRP.
Do what you need to do in TWRP.
Then just before you leave TWRP go to INSTALL choose your external SDCard choose "image" from the install screen find your boot.img and select "boot" with the little radio button.
Once flashed choose reboot system.
Now when you boot you will be back to normal :good:
OP Updated let me know if it's clearer to understand now.
Thanks for reporting back. :good:
I'll give it a go! Many thanks! Just one question though. How do I enter recovery mode from then on? Is it still power down, power and volume down yeah?

I don't think you have really read or understood the OP
You are only ever flashing the "boot partition".
When you need to use TWRP you flash the TWRP.img to the boot partition and when your done you flash back your boot.img again to the boot partition as in the OP.
BTW Have you ever been able to enter the STOCK recovery using Power and Volume Down or using any commands
My phone could not enter the STOCK recovery at all let alone a custom one and since no one ever replied to my question about this I assumed this was the case for everyone as many sony devices from 7.0 had the recovery disabled?
I'm unable to get into stock recovery too!
So,
If we don't have a Recovery partition maybe we can
Create one...
Tutorial in here
https://iwf1.com/how-to-re-partitio...-all-options-included-change-size-fs-type-etc
I'll try it if i have time.
I tested twrp 2 times
Worked every time.
I've tried to install superSu.zip via twrp, looked all right, rebooted the phone and now it's in bootloop for over 2 hours...
It's getting hotter... i ca't turn it off
The only thing that works is keeping Power and Volume Up pressed and it looks restarting...
What can i do to revive it safely?

Mate you really need to be careful unless you really know what your doing
You will likely brick the phone if you continue to blindly mess with re-partitioning and the like.
If you were in TWRP which was flashed to the boot partition as directed in the OP then flashing the supersu.zip will simply modify your TWRP.img not your boot.img since TWRP is living in the boot partition at the time you run the .zip hence your looping.
This device has bootloader issues since it will not allow the booting of another partition except "boot" recovery, fotakernel, rdimage, all tested all failed to boot the TWRP recovery and stock recovery.
There is another method used by some sony devices but this will need to be heavily modified for this MediaTek SoC and will require a lot of study and script re-writes.
Spending all this time on a device that's pretty much obsolete before it was launched since it's not planned to receive oreo and Sony 90% locked down the bootloader is kinda futile so use the phone for what it is then throw it in the bin when done in a year or two.
Mate, you are right
Hi, please make recovery for L1 G3312 i hope you can do it.

I think this one may very well work for the dual SIM also so please try it and then report back with some actual details.
eg: bootloader status, firmware version, your region, etc etc.
Thanks.
Works great on the G3113 model, thank you for developing this! Now hoping to find a custom rom to install via .zip.
This "HERE v5-twrp-l1.img" is working in my Xperia L1 G3312.
But, after installing TWRP, phone does not get into boot normally. Everytime it boots into recovery mode. I think that it needs separate twrp partition. This twrp is overwriting the main boot. If anyone can make separate partition for TWRP recovery. This problem will be solved.
Hello. I ignored all your post like a retard and basically just went to the last step to flash the image. The twrp works but it wouldn't boot into normal mode but just boot to twrp everytime so I downloaded some random boot image I saw online and installed it. Now it's just stuck in the sony logo and won't even turn off. Is there anything I can do or is it rip for good?

No it's only the boot.img Flash the boot.img in this thread https://forum.xda-developers.com/xperia-l1/how-to/root-l1-g3313-magisk-t3693350 if you can get into fastboot that is.
If not then use FlashTool to flash the stock boot.sin and system.sin only. That should get you working again.

In twrp mode, I can do everything smoothly..... but phone does not get into boot normally..... After installing stock boot again, phone boot into normally, but twrp has gone completely..... Yes but Sony Disabled the recovery partition (fotakernel) by design so you can not boot from it.
The OP is clear about the need to flash the TWRP to your boot partition and the reason I also give full instruction in the workflow/method but people simply don't read anymore it seems. :crying:
TWRP can be injected into the boot.img so you can boot normally or boot TWRP using the volume keys at boot time but I can't be bothered working on this since Sony are not going to update the Android Version.
While the phone is OK I have far better phones to spend my time on at the moment.
how to backup boot.img without root? if its impossible then how do i root this phone?

Hey skullkid383, thankyou for your work on this!! Twrp flashed and works NP. But I cannot decrypt. Following steps, the step you mount before pushing in twrp adb does not work, no such folder. The push goes thru fine although the mount did not. Format data worked, I can see internal storage and move things to and from PC through tether. But when I reboot its sticks on moto screen. When I flash back to patched boot for magisk the is boots to an "decryption unsuccessful" msg and asks me to reset the phone endlessly. Any help pls?

1st make a backup just in case:
Ok here we go flash twrp and magisk beta then patched boot.img boot system get a file explorer with root permissions edit fstab.qcom find it here: /vendor/etc.
just replace current one with one I'm uploading
in guide to make easier to find wipe then u should be good of course flash magisk beta after u wipe as well
Hmm still decryption unsuccessful. About to reflash to stock. Sorry for the slow response. I have the next several hours free to test. I don't have an SD card, so i rooted the old way, using your patched boot, then used es file explorer to replace fstab, rebooted to confirm, and fstabs permissions had changed from rw r r to rw rw so it stuck. once I format data and internal becomes visible I move magisk over, flash then reboot and get dencryption unsuccessful. Also even flashing the recovery before formatting resulted in it being lost every reboot, only after format data it stuck.

Ok I am going to build new one in awhile my PC screen broke idk when but until then the link to Hannah twrp is down till I fix it
Ah man, so instead of fastboot flashing everything back to stock, I figured I'd just flash stock recovery back, after the decryption unsuccessful route. Flashed stock recovery, when it booted and asked me to reset the phone instead of going to twrp this time it went to the stock recovery image of a reset...phone booted, got to looking around and holy crap I'm decrypted! flashed your twrp and now I'm rooted with twrp and decrypted!! So maybe boot twrp the first time when formatting data and decrypting so when you boot and the device asks you to reset because of decryption failure it can use stock recovery to complete the process, then flash twrp for the finish? Your incredibly helpful man, again thankyou for all of your efforts and work on this!!
Still wanna fix twrp found a issue in formatting data I wanna fix but it shall take some time to get it done link is down til then cause it's something that needs fixed first before I put it back up

How To Successfully Install Twrp For G7 Play

Im Pretty Sure Everyone that will read this thread will have an unlocked bootloader.
Requirments: an Unlocked Bootloader. A PC. And Some Knowledge about Android Coustomization.
So for twrp to boot Correctly Your Going to need a modified dtbo image with out it your going to have twrp boot into a black screen with minimal file transfer capabilities
The DTBO image i use is This One
https://drive.google.com/file/d/1pV6-LbNoMG0J8vcyAWN0QWYGx67vxBgT/view?usp=sharing
next your going to need a twrp thats stable i suggest this one
https://drive.google.com/file/d/13MROGlEA_TdgHFTaiqOswo4w0NgXhGbx/view?usp=sharing
now that you have the files
first hold power and volume up till you see a black screen with text saying fastboot flash mode
now we are going to get the recovery installed by running two commands in fastboot
first command fastboot flash dtbo /path/to/yours.img
run the next command fastboot boot twrp4.img
now you should see the twrp recovery splash screen
now we are going to go to mount this will pop up a file transfer window on your pc
drag twrp4.img to a directory you know where its at
backout of mount and go to install
select the directory where your twrp4.img is at
then click install image
it should show you that twrp is there click on twrp4.img
select install to recovery ramdisk
swipe to confirm flash
wait till its done then click back
go to advanced click fix recovery bootloop
swipe to confirm
then go back click reboot
select recovery
you can unplug your phone now
and you will see twrp is now installed on your device
click reboot select poweroff
hold volume down and power untill you see that text again from fastboot
this time use volume up to scroll through your options untill you find recovery mode then press power
you will be booted into twrp do that for when ever you need to access your recovery
hope this tutorial helps
and thanks to spaceminer for making this twrp
and thanks to scritch007 for modifing the dtbo img

I noticed with stock firmware it boot loops I'm currently running the dot os treble image and it's consistent , but not with stock unless there is no data ,.but when data is created it boot loops , I recommend flashing the treble gsi image , the only bug is no proper notch support and I don't have a Linux but to attempt to create an overlay

Can you tell me the right how should I flash this zip? I'm new to TWRP and Magisk, and I'm trying to get root for my G7 Play. I know there is the sideload flashing from ADB and the install update option in stock recovery, but I don't know if one of them is the way to flash it or if it's a way that I don't know.
Thanks in advance
on my moto g7 play xt1952-2 the touchscreen stopped how to solve?
great job
big thank you to all that had a hand in getting a working twrp for the g7 play!!! it worked perfectly the first time i did it
Fails to install twrp to recovery ramdisk
Hi!
I've tried to follow the guide but somehow I fail to install the twrp image to the recovery ramdisk.
When updating partition details, it fails to mount '/vendor' (invalid argument)
Then when it tries to backing up the boot it fails:
cd /tmp/repackorig/ && /sbin/magiskboot --unpack -h '/tmp/repackorig/boot.img' process ended with Error 1. Error unpacking image.
Any suggestions to solve this?
Output from recovery.log

Got stuck trying to follow the above recipe as it hasn't yet been edited to include the additional details about for example the no-verity thing... Would appreciate an update. Thx.
There's a new build that should work on all models including RETUS. You guys can find that here. It has /vendor & /oem backup and restore but they're untested. I do need some help with it if anyone here is savvy enough. In it's current state, it bootloops with the stock OS installed. But not when a GSI is installed. The recovery loop fix in twrp doesn't work, and I'm not sure how to make it work.
need help
i can boot to twrp using fastboot but any other time it just flashes and wont load plz help also i dont have root just saying

I'm pretty sure I've sussed it out.
I noticed that G7 River has an extra step.. once TWRP in ramdisk and also bootloop fix ran...
They use https://dl.twrp.me/river/twrp-installer-3.3.1-2-river.zip.html
So , Hope you don't mind, I unpacked your TWRP and exchanged the ramdisk-trwp.cpio in the river zip with yours.
Flashed it after the bootloop fix and it installs to boot a and b.
I then formatted data, installed latest canary magisk manager zip
then no verity from here
it's succesfully rebooted to setup (as I formatted data obviously) .... now to go through setup... but the fact it's got this far looks good

Try dumping the boot.img after you've done everything to install twrp, then manually patch it with magisk, and flash it with fastboot.
