Are all Nexus 5 capable of having their bootloader unlocked?
I found a refurbished Nexus 5 for sale, but apparently it's for Freedompop. I don't care anything about Freedompop, I use Cricket, but it's a decent price for the phone.
My thought were to just put CM13 on it and use it on Cricket. But since it's sold for use with Freedompop, I wasn't sure if it would be capable of being unlocked. I thought all Nexus devices were unlockable, but I may be wrong on that.

All N5 has unlockable bootloader.

So reading the Beat Buy FAQ, they make it sound as if there are two different versions. A SIM locked one for $199 with two year contract from T-Mo and an unlocked one for $529. I believe this is misrepresentation but wanted to hear your thoughts.

personally id get the T-Mobile version for $199.99 bc im pretty sure a unlock code method will come up somehow and if it doesnt, then u can just ask T-Mobile for the code and get it in a week or so.
Hi,
I dont know for sure -- but my guess is all the Nexus S phones are unlocked.
According to this thread, the Nexus One was unlocked with a contract:
talkandroid.com/android-forums/nexus-one/3426-subsidized-nexus-one-carrier-locked.html
I wouldn't take the Best Buy FAQ as gospel. For example one of the question is:
Are there two different versions of the Nexus S, locked and unlocked?
No, there is only one Nexus S. It is available locked with a 2-year T-Mobile contract or unlocked with no contract.

The answer is no, but then they go and say there is locked and an unlocked version. Did a 10 year old write this or what?
there are no locked nexus s devices just like there were no locked nexus one devices. Some are just sold with a contract.
I see in some videos that theres a T-Mobile tab in the Market giving T-Mobile recommended apps.
So is there 2 version? Will the Sim Free version have no T-mobile branding in it?
I found a good deal for a new n5 on craigslist but the guy thats selling it says they told him its locked to his carrier. I went online and almost everyone says you cant lock a nexus phone to a carrier.
As far as i recall sprint had the nexus locked. He got his directly from bell canada. Does anyone know anything about this?
Thanks!

All Nexus 5 phones are factory unlocked some one at Bell probably gave him wrong info as they normally only sell fully locked phones from the other manufactures.
I'm not entirely sure that all Nexus 5's come unlocked - - A lot of folks said that about all previous Nexus devices, i.e., they all come unlocked, but there were one's that came locked (although none of them were from Canada). That said, every Nexus device prior to the Nexus 5 sold by Canadian carriers has come unlocked, if that is any indication.

sometimes the carrier locks their own phones. I'm not sure if this was the case though
The carrier probably lied. My dad had a nexus 4 and the fido CSR told him it was locked too.

Well I decided to pass. Not because it might be locked which i really doubt it would be. But because
I would only save about $50 but if something was to go wrong when i get it home or a week down the line
I would be SOL as google wouldnt cover the warranty. It seems that they match the IMEI with the account it
was purchased under to do any returns or fixes. Save 50 bucks or risk 350 ..go figure
I am thinking of buying a new Nexus 5 from eBay but I will have to unlock it to be able to use in my country with a sim of my own. my question is, will root unlock it or is there is any other unlock method? is it hard to do it? thanks!
They're not locked

They're not locked if you buy it from Play or other non-carrier supplier. They could potentially be locked if supplied from a carrier and has been known amongst previous nexus devices.
They aren't locked at all, that I'm aware of. I bought mine thru Sprint, but after changing Sim cards and rebooting, it works on att and tmobile

Confusion can arise because of the word unlock. On nexus, unlocking refers to the boot loader which allows you to change system files and root.
But as said all nexus 5 are sim-unlocked from the get go.
I have been looking at buying a Nexus 5 (I have Sprint) as a second phone to play with. I currently have a Nexus 6 atm, I have seen a few on ebay and some on Amazon that state unlocked, etc, etc..........
Has anyone here bought an unlocked phone and have it working on Sprint ? I am interested in getting a Nexus 5, but I'm leery that if I end up getting one it will not work with Sprint unless I get a specific Sprint carrier phone. The phone itself has the band capability for Sprint, so I'm not sure why a lot of the GSM unlocked version say it will not work with CDMA, etc etc.
Thanks
Hi all
It's time to retire my Galaxy G6 (and my wife's ancient Moto X) and I'm having a really hard time figuring out a budget-friendly, bootloader/sim unlocked option that will work on the Sprint network. (We have the old SERO plan, and pay $50/mo per line, for true unlimited data and virtually unlimited calls/text/international roaming.)
I've done some preliminary research about phones that have excellent XDA support, but sadly I'm told by Sprint that most of these phones will not work on the Sprint network. Namely:
One Plus 5T
Moto 5G Plus
Pixel 1
LG G6
Huawei Mate 9
I contacted Sprint chat, and they told me that all but the Pixel 1 and LG G6 are incompatible with Sprint. Is this accurate?
If true, how do I go about confirming that the model I'd be purchasing is truly bootloader unlocked? I understand buying a used phone in a crapshoot, and buying directly from the carrier guarantees a locked bootloader. Is this accurate?
I saw an Amazon Prime version of the LG G6, but have read on XDA that this Prime version of the phone is bootloader locked. Is this true?
Any tips for phones I have not mentioned would be most welcome, as long as they meet the following criteria:
1. Works on Sprint Network
2. Unlocked Sim and bootloader (ability to root is mandatory-- the easier to root, the better)
3. Phone is well supported by XDA community
4. Relatively easy to root (ideally, rooting will not void warranty as with Pixel and One Plus 5T, though this is not mandatory)
5. Affordable (let's say less than $400, but ideally less than $300)
Additionally, I'd welcome all tips as to how to determine whether the phone has an unlocked bootloader.
Thanks, all. I really appreciate your help.
