[Q] SIM Locked vs Unlocked - Nexus S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So reading the Beat Buy FAQ, they make it sound as if there are two different versions. A SIM locked one for $199 with two year contract from T-Mo and an unlocked one for $529. I believe this is misrepresentation but wanted to hear your thoughts.

personally id get the T-Mobile version for $199.99 bc im pretty sure a unlock code method will come up somehow and if it doesnt, then u can just ask T-Mobile for the code and get it in a week or so.

Hi,
I dont know for sure -- but my guess is all the Nexus S phones are unlocked.
According to this thread, the Nexus One was unlocked with a contract:
talkandroid.com/android-forums/nexus-one/3426-subsidized-nexus-one-carrier-locked.html
I wouldn't take the Best Buy FAQ as gospel. For example one of the question is:
Are there two different versions of the Nexus S, locked and unlocked?
No, there is only one Nexus S. It is available locked with a 2-year T-Mobile contract or unlocked with no contract.

The answer is no, but then they go and say there is locked and an unlocked version. Did a 10 year old write this or what?

there are no locked nexus s devices just like there were no locked nexus one devices. Some are just sold with a contract.

I see in some videos that theres a T-Mobile tab in the Market giving T-Mobile recommended apps.
So is there 2 version? Will the Sim Free version have no T-mobile branding in it?

Google Nexus S Unlocked?

Im looking to see if i can get some information, the Google nexus S is coming out on the 16th their are 2 version the locked to t-mobile and the unlocked one now if i purchases the unlocked one will i be able to use it in Canada with out any problems i know the frequency are the same

Nexus S is not carrier-locked -- any SIM will work in it. It is being sold with and without a TMO subsidy in the US but there is only one version of the hardware.
The bootloader supports "fastboot oem unlock", just like Nexus One, for the convenience of folks wanting to flash custom OS builds.
Enjoy.

That's what I thought originally, but best buy just put up a faq about the nexus s that makes this confusing. "Locked" is mentioned a few times:
"The Nexus S will be available on launch date in both locked and unlocked versions at all Best Buy stores, Best Buy Mobile stand-alone locations and online."
"Can I purchase a locked, T-Mobile Nexus S without a contract?
Yes, locked phones without a contract can be purchased for $529.99."
The faq is here: http://www.bestbuymobile.com/article/google-nexus-s-faqs

you can buy the locked version at best buy for full price, thats what my best buy said, and also on Tmobile

does the device is sim free?

does the nexus s in best buy is sim free or not ?
plz
i am talking about the 529$ deal
and if not is there any way to unlock it ?
sry for my english
The phone is unlocked no matter what version you buy. Best Buy worded their FAQ wrong at the beginning but I believe it's fixed now.
You can put an SIM in this device and have it work. Though if you are in the US, only T-mobile's 3g will work.
All Nexus S units are unlocked and will work with any GSM SIM. Best Buy was mistaken in claiming that some units are locked.
Is this still valid for the AT&T version of Nexus S sold on Best Buy Stores?
I am looking to buy the AT&T version of Nexus S on a next trip to the US in mid August 2011.
I will use the phone in Mexico, (my cell operator uses the same 3G frequencies as AT&T, now I got an AT&T Nexus One which works ok here.)
I am expecting to get, for $529.00+ USD, a SIM Unlocked Nexus One phone, that meaning: that I can put it any SIM from any other company (that uses the same AT&T frequencies, of course) and the phone should work fine.
ALSO, I am expecting a full "Google Experience" Android, loaded on the phone. That meaning, among other things, that for instance: HotSpot tethering should work as stated on the Google's Nexus S page. I do not want to buy a phone that a carrier has tinkered with its native Android features.
Your comments and advice on this are well appreciated.
Thanks in advance.
As far as similar free yes the nexus line comes unlocked except for nexus s 4g.

Help me with my unlocked phone purchase for AT&T

I'll start off by saying this is not a question regarding which phone but more so about what buying an unlocked phone gives/ doesn't give you.
In the past 6 years I have spent time with almost every U.S. carrier, even some twice, and purchased over 30 phones but for whatever reason have never purchased an unlocked phone or used one from anothee carrier other than the one I am on.
I am currently considering an unlocked Sensation or GS2 and was wondering..
How do OTA updated work with unlocked phones?
What issues and options from AT&T do I lose with an unlocked phone?
I assume you have no warranty even through the manufacture?
Any other downsides to using an unlocked phone?
Where are the best places to buy?
GS2 Specific questions
Is it confirmed that the AT&T version will have NFC?
Any solid information on a release date?
Thanks for any help!

[Q] Running Rogers One X on AT&T?

I'm wondering if anyone already has, or knows if there are any issues taking a One X from Rogers and using it on AT&T? Maybe it's SIM locked to Rogers or something? I see you can buy the Rogers One X without a contract and am considering doing that to use it on AT&T in the states.

Someone answered that question in my thread saying yes. And lte should work also. I might do this also since I just signed a contract for this phone so might as well return it and buy a rogers at full price

Thanks. I read the title of every Q&A post but only clicked through on those whose title indicated the subject I was asking about.
I just found a thread in General about using the Rogers phone on WIND and it seems pretty clear from reading it that the Rogers One X is SIM-locked: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1610323
It seems one could use something like http://www.cellunlocker.net/ to unlock it for $8... I'm just so, so, so disappointed that AT&T chose to disallow bootloader unlocking on their device while both the international and otherwise similar Rogers version can be bootloader unlocked just fine. I was thinking of getting a two year contract on AT&T, selling the unopened phone, then using that money to buy the no contract Rogers One X. Pay to SIM unlock it, add an AT&T APN and in theory I'll have an HTC One X running on AT&T LTE that can have it's bootloader unlocked.
LTE will work. As long as you have the LTE data plan and APN, you're good. I had an Optimus LTE from Bell and LTE was just fine when I was visiting family in Chicago in February.

the phone has been rooted!
thats the main thing i cared about
i need Titanium haha
hopefully the bootloader unlock isnt too far away (6 months?)

[Q] How to buy a carrier unlocked nexus 5 outside google play

Hi i'm travelling to the US next month and i want to buy a nexus 5. as i need to use it with my country carrier i need it unlocked.
now as far as i understand, i can't buy it from the play store as i dont have an US credit card (correct me if i'm wrong)
both the t-mobile and best buy support told me that their version of the nexus 5 ($450) are not really unlocked, but i've read a lot that in fact you can use that phones with whatever carrier you want. is that true? has anyone bought the t-mobile / bestbuy(sprint) versions and tried using another carrier SIM?
Thanks guys

I don't believe there are any carrier-locked N5s being sold in the US. You've checked that the US version of the phone supports the bands that are used in your country? BB will charge $100 more for the phone and likely try to sell you service, but you should be able to get it.

yes i checked and the 850/1900 bands are supported. both bestbuy and tmobile support told me that the phone is sold locked to the respective carriers, but i've read that that's actually not true and you can just swap with whatever SIM you have. Also i hope they dont try to force me to sign some plans if i buy the device
I am interested in this info also. I have a Nexus 5 showing up from Sprint and wondering if it will work with my T-Mobile SIM later if I decide to use it.

No Nexus 5 devices are sold locked. They are all unlocked and if anything you can test it right there in the store/parking lot to be sure.
The only problem however is LTE if you'll ever need that.

i hope this is true!
they just answered me this:
Hi , If you purchase the device from T-Mobile, it is locked and will only work with a T-Mobile SIM card. Once you've met the requirements, we can help you unlock the device. If you need one unlocked already, we recommend purchasing directly through Google. - Jess
The Sprint and T-Mobile Nexus 5's are unlocked. I have a Sprint one that I purchased at Best Buy and it works just fine with my T-Mobile sim card....2G, 3G, 4G, and LTE...

I got them to price match Google the day it came out, so I got it for $350. They may have smartened up to that by now though. The SIM came in the phone. I did not have to pay for the SIM or an activation fee. I didn't let them open the box at all.

i'm wondering if i can do this. it says in the BB website:
"If you find a lower price on a qualifying product at a local retail competitor's store or shipped from and sold by a designated major online retailer, we will match the price. At the time of purchase, we will match the current pre-tax price for new, identical, immediately available products from a local retail competitor's store or shipped from and sold by a designated major online retailers: Amazon.com, Apple.com, Bhphotovideo.com, Crutchfield.com, Dell.com, Frys.com, hhgregg.com, HP.com, HomeDepot.com, Lowes.com, Newegg.com, OfficeDepot.com, OfficeMax.com, Rakuten.com Shopping, Sears.com, Staples.com, Target.com, TigerDirect.com and Walmart.com."
it doesn't list google play as an allowed website.
i hope i get a cool seller lol
Thanks again!
Nexus 5's are not locked to any specific carrier. You just need to make sure that the bands are compatible with your carriers' frequency.
I bought my N5 off contract from BestBuy. It is unlocked. I am running mine on Simple Mobile. I only had to put my SIM in and program the APN for data access.
