tobias.waldvogel's method is the easiest way to achieve it imo. His guide covers it all from A to Z (How to back up your DRM keys, unlock the bootloader, patch the stock kernel and flash it back on your device, get a working TWRP Recovery, root Android with SuperSU, re-apply the DRM keys to restore functionalities, etc.)
Follow the steps and you'll get it to work. You won't need anything else, everything you need to have/know (files, tools, etc.) can be found in the first post of that thread

1) Yes, you gain SuperUser privileges granting you access to everything.
2) That means that you can request a bootloader unlock code from Sony to unlock your bootloader, allowing you to flash custom kernels and more custom ROMs.
3) Do you mean to root or unlock the bootloader? To root use the guides in our forums, to unlock the bootloader request your bootloader unlock code from Sony and use flashtool to unlock it.
4) I don't use an Xperia J, rooting seems easy for it. Unlocking the bootloader is simple enough.
5) As I said, I don't use an Xperia J. You would need to use one tool to Root and another to flash Kernels. ROMs are flashed using a recovery program.
6) If it is a soft-brick you can recover the phone. You know it is a soft-brick when it; bootloops, won't turn on but LEDs light up or it vibrates but doesn't turn on. You recover it by flashing stock firmware in flashtool.
If it is a hard-brick there is no way (what I am aware of) to recover it and you need a new phone. You know when it is a hard-brick when the phone won't turn on. Don't confuse a dead battery with a hard-brick.
7) It depends on what you need a video tutorial for. If it is for recoving from a soft-brick or how to Root then it is more than likely.
8) You mean .ftf, tft is a screen. But anyway, an .ftf file is the stock firmware. You need it to restore your phone to stock.
9) It depends on the method you use I think. You can generally unroot your phone after rooting it. Remember, if you unlock your bootloader you lose your warranty, even if you re-lock it.
I want to suggest you that rooting your device wont give you more fun,if you are interested to learn that things then n then root ...

watch this video to unlock it https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iIdJg7KNH3A
and a bootloader allows you to flash kernels/recovers/ and other custom things but only if it is unlocked.
with custom recovery you can install roms, make full system backup, and other things.
a custom kernel wil allow you to overclock cpu/gpu and more.
a custom recovery can be used to flash root.update zip.
but after unlocking bootloader you void your warranty . and your device got hard reset(factory reset)
it can be only unlocked if it is allowed to be unlocked.

Not entirely true, at least to all devices. I have a Moto Defy which also has a locked bootloader, no way to unlock, running KK CM11. Developer @pedrodh has managed to create an app called "2ndinit" (1) which allows a second kernel to boot on top of the locked one, allowing to flash new builds despite the locked bootloader. Because of this, Defy is known as unbricable. Similar approach could be used on E3 if some devel take a look into this.

[Q] Help with installing lollipop on unlocked phone

Hello !
I recently bought a used Z3 6603, and wanted to update it to lollipop.
But it seems it has a unlocked bootloader (according to service menu) and when i recieved it, it was factory reset, but some 3rd party apps were still installed.
One of them Super SU, so it was rooted.
I was told that i could update the firmware if i just used the Full Uninstall feature in Super Su, so i did that.
I still can't update using sony companion, becouse it knows the software is not the original one.
And i cant reinstall super su, its saying that there is no SU binary installed and the program cant install it.
I have flashed phones before, but it was really a long time ago, so im asking for some help to fix this.
Its running 4.4.4 build 23.0.1.A.5.77 and stock rom i think.
Please tell me what to do, and what info you might need !
I want to have the phone in lollipop, but everything stock, no root, no bootloader etc.
And somewhere I read something about DRM keys. Please help me with fixing that aswell thank you.

Your DRM keys are lost forever.

Ok, so they are lost even if I use the first backup that was made by the person I bought it from ?
DRM=Hardcoded=Once unlocked, always DRM free, even if you use the recovery image ?
And the rest of the questions, what am I supposed to do to get stock lollipop?
In the matter of fact it does not matter if its unlocked or locked, I just want legit lollipop, with the possibility to update regularly. (But if root is possible at the same, it can still be rooted)
Thanks for your reply !
You need the TA backup. Not system backup.
And careful not to restore some other TA.
If the previous owner backed up TA, good. If not, no chance to recover them.
Download your specific firmware in ftf format and flash it with Flashtool.
Make a clean install.
You cannot recieve OTA with an unlocked bootloader, only if you relock, but there is no point in doing that if the DRM keys are lost.
So, from where you stand, keep it rooted and unlocked, because you can do much more with it : Custom ROM' s [at the moment stock is best]...custom kernels with recovery...mods...etc.
After you flash the ftf, flash via adb a custom kernel with recovery and from recovery flash SuperSU update, as a flashable zip, that will root the phone and install SuperSU.Search also for busybox flashable zip.

Ok, I will try that then, but if I use flashtool to update to lollipop, will I still be able to root easy, or should I reinstall 4.4.4 clean, then root, fix recovery kernel and everything, and then lollipop or what goes first?
Does flash/kernel etc affect the fact that it has an unlocked bootloader ? do i need to do anything with that, or do it stay unlocked?

If you have unlocked the bootloader it is always a trivial matter to root.
Just flash an insecure kernel.
If one does not exist use [NUT]'s online kernel builder to make one with recovery incorporated in it. Its very straightforward and an automated process.
So, update using flashtool, flash your custom kernel, and you have root and recovery.

1. Sorry for my noobish question, but define insecure kernel?
2. Did I get it right? I read about ppl downgrading their phones to 4.4.4 and then installing stuff. And for me it does not matter wich version it is, becouse the unlocked bootloader makes it easy to flash, even what version you are running?

1) a rooted kernel.
2) If you have unlocked there is no need to follow any of the locked bootloader guides, they are a waste of your time. One of the points point of unlocking the phone is to easily get root. You just flash a custom kernel to gain root.
If you have a locked bootloader then you have to go through all the fuss of downgrading etc etc.... but with an unlocked bootloader its so easy and straightforward

[Question] Unlock bootloader risks

Hi all!
I have my Xperia M2 with the latest firmware: 18.6.A.0.182.
I want to root it, and install a custom recovery, and i know how to do all of this through this forum. But I need to unloock my bootloader.
What's the problem?
If you go here: (i can not post links, the developer sony / unlockbootloader) and warns you:
Important note! In order to unlock your Xperia™ M2 you need to be on software version 18.3.C.0.37. Also beware that booting this device the first time after unlocking the boot loader may take a long time.

I don't know why this...
Searching in google, the people recomends to use flashtool to unlock the bootloader.
What will happen if i intend to unlock it and something goes wrong? I don't know how to solve a soft-brick withouth an unlocked bootloader.
Thanks for your help.
Hey, first do it the official sony way flashtools doesn't work for many including me when i unlocked my bootloader. http://developer.sonymobile.com/unlockbootloader/unlock-yourboot-loader/
Second if anything goes wrong, just reflash your firmware (jellybean, kitkat, lollipop whatever) through flashtools and it will be back to stock.
Unlocking your bootloader there is not much which can go wrong.
Btw, you will lose your DRM keys. 2 of them i think for buying stuff through ps store.
Also if you run into problems post here we'll help.
Now I have root with KingRoot. If I make a backup of TA partition i can restore DRM keys when I like it, no?
And the magic question for me is: How I flash original firmwares if the bootloader is locked? I only need locate the right FTF and with flashtool is enought?
Thank you!

Yes you can restore your DRM keys backup if you want in the future.
And if you want to flash a FTF on locked bootloader you can use Flashtool by Androxyde or Xperia Companion.
Ok, thank you all, I'll try to backup DRM keys and unlook the bootloader and I'll post the results!

Flash FTF via flashtools and wipe everything it's pretty straightfoward, you can get it here. Download, open xperifirm, flash.
To restore drmkeys you need to have a backup before you unlocked your bootloader otherwise your DRM keys are lost forever and you will have to flash either a kernel or
drm fix.
