Root, unlock, s-off on marshmallow - Verizon HTC One (M8)

I am new on this phone and I have a doubt, my phone is in marshmallow and the company verizon, as I can do root and unlock the bootloader ? I have understood that I need to pay 25 dollars to make the s -off but I just want to do root and unlock the bootloader. Thank you.
Sorry for my English

The only way to do it with Verizon branded m8 is to use sunshine. And that will get you an unlocked bootloader and s-off. After that you can flash twrp recovery through adb (get yourself familiar with and, it'll help you greatly. You can search around here and find some good reads on it.) After you get tarp flashed then you can flash supersu in twrp, then you'll be rooted.

This comment pretty much guided me through how to root for my m8. Thanks for taking the time to post this, even if it was a few months back. I was about to give up until I saw it, so thanks again!

Dismayed/Encouraged
I'm surprised that there are not any viable options for the Verizon HTC One(M8). I figured since my warranty was up I would try and root to get more freedom from the consuming Verizon bloatware and needless/redundant processes.
I know I did the same thing with my Samsung Galaxy S years ago and it became a very speedy and efficient phone. I really haven't been in the Android scene since so everything I did learn along with the methods and processes have all faded from memory.
Now I'm just reading up on a ton of stuff to get reacquainted. I was wanting to flash TWRP, SuperSU, and the ViperOneM8 6.1.0 rom. My wife and I both have a Verizon HTC One(M8) (running Marshmallow) which are out of warranty and wanted to give them a face-lift and boost in performance.
It is looking like the only feasible option is with Sunshine. . . . . . I hope. (?)
A $50 investment would be cheaper than buying 2 newer phones.
Any ideas, input, or pointers would be very much appreciated.
Regards,
wantin2mod

Can't unlock bootloader

Hi all,
I'm trying to get the unlock token at htcdev and I keep getting this message after I submit the copied txt from the fastboot result.
"Error code: 172. Error reason: CID not allowed (MID not exist in model rule)."
PLEASE... any help would be most appreciated.

Assuming you're in the right forums (Verizon HTC M8), you can't use HTCdev to unlock the phone. Thee only way to unlock the Verizon version of the phone is through a 3rd party unlock method, that was created by jcase and his team, called Sunshine. Here's their website for thee unlock: http://theroot.ninja/
Hi… Thanks for the speedy reply.
That's my my second dilemma. Root is a requirement and towel root isn't working either. So, I'm running in circles. I can't use Sunshine to unlock the bootloader because its not rooted and I can't root it because I can't unlock the bootloader.

You cannot unlock you're boot loader. You have vzw 4.4.4 firmware. Sunshine doesn't work on that yet. You are S.O.L. until they update.
Sorry.
Does it work on 4.4.3?
I'm only asking because I've having an issue with my screen and I was planning on taking it back to exchange it. When I got this one, it had 4.4.3 on it and then I got the 4.4.4 OTA. it's a gamble, but if the new phone still has 4.4.3 on it, then I can just dodged the OTA and try sunshine on that one.

Sunshine does everything. Except if your phone is up to date, you can't do anything cause nothing works for the 4.4.4 vzw m8

Ok. So, does sunshine work on 4.4.3?
In any case, the sunshie web page says that root is required but I can't root it.
Root is required and yes it will work on 4.4.3. Sunshine has a temp root utility built in to the program so it is all in one system.

1 more thing to clarify, I have a Verizon M7, and TowelRoot DOES work, there's just a hidden trick for our phones.... Tap the welcome/ intro msg that appears when u open the towelroot app (i believe I had to tap 3 times) and a string of numbers appears , u change the last number from a 0 to a 1 and then it works for our phones. It's not needed for sunshine, but for ppl who wanna take the shortcut after sunshine of just downloading and using flashify to flash recovery (root or temp root required) it works. It was Towelroot V3 I believe. I'm on 4.4.3 sense 6 m7, and I know it worked on 4.4.2 when everyone was saying it didn't work, so if it's something u wanna look into, give it a try. Even the website I believe said it didn't"officially" support our phones, but after doing that trick, it does

Not a problem, and yeah it probably does pose some risks, just figured I'd let ya know. Alotta ppl just see that the app doesn't"officially" support any of the htc one phones and take that as fact when it's really not true. I did it with my phone n haven't had a problem, but had I known at the time the risks of doing it that way pose, I probably wouldn't have done it that way
Ok… please forgive my frustration but can someone please explain to me how rooting this phone works… or doesn't work.
I rooted my HTC Incredible and my Rezound with ease. I got pretty comfortable with adb so I went on flashing roms and other mods. They were so easy but now everything seems to be so complicated with this phone.
I'm going nuts trying to understand these confusing threads where it sounds like you need to root the phone in order to root the phone. Even though they don't work, I see instructions to use firewater, towelroot or weaksause so that you can use sunshine. I read where someone was asking for help because sunshine wouldn't work and they couldn't figure it out because the phone was already unlocked, rooted and s-off. ,isn't that what sunshine does… unlock, root and s-off?
My HTC One M8 is bone stock, off-the-shelf with kitkat 4.4.4.
What do I need to use sunshine, now with 2.7.1 or later with 3.0?
Can I use an RUU to downgrade to 4.4.3 so that sunshine 2.7.1 will work?
Is sunshine REALLY the only way that works… or doesn't work (right now)?
Thank you in advance for your help and your patience.

If you're bone stock S-ON with 4.4.4 then you cannot root the phone yet. Probably won't be able to till early January when the new sunshine is released.
If you're bone stock S-OFF on 4.4.4 all you need to do is flash a custom recovery and then flash the latest SuperSU zip file.

.... and to ease your confusion: What a lot of people get mixed up is
temp root with weaksauce + firewater worked for some devices on 4.4.2 (hardware variants making the difference).
For those 4.4.2 weaksauce+firewater did not work and all 4.4.3 M8s there's only Sunshine (and it temp-roots the device in the process)
4.4.4: beaups announced they are shooting for a first week of January release for Sunshine 3
And no, you cannot downgrade to 4.3 with S-on.
Time to try your luck with the new weaksauce and sunshine.

That worked! Bootloader is now UNLOCKED and S-OFF. Thank you!! I must have had the earlier version of weaksause.
Still no root though. SuperSU keeps failing when I try to update the binary online and my desktop is out of commision so no recovery yet either. I've got a new desktop on the way which should be here by the end of the week.
Is there anything I can try in the meantime?

You can download from the play store the app called flashify to put a custom recovery on since no CPU right now u said, then you can download thesuperSU.zip llatest from XDA and flash it in said custom recovery. That should get you rooted.

[Q] HTC One M8 + Stock Android

So I am looking into upgrading my phone this month and the 2 phones I am stuck on are this and the Droid Turbo. I like the design and expandability of the One M8 but I'm leaning more towards the Turbo purely for stock android w/o unlocking/rooting and flashing a ROM. I have experience with rooting with my Droid DNA however that took me an entire day to get working 100%.
I am still really keen on getting the M8 so what I want to know is this:
- Is there a simple process to unlocking+rooting the M8 so that I can flash TWRP and stock android roms?
- Is there any OTA update that I need to worry about that will compromise rooting?
- Are there stable, bugfree vanilla android roms for the One M8 (I.E. GPE Roms w/o any mods)?
- Should I just save time and get the Turbo instead for stock android?
Any help and input will be appreciated. Thanks!

25 bucks for sunshine which s-off your phone it is a app very issue to use. as long as your m8 is supported an you can do whatever you want with your m8...you don't take ota when s-off. You just flash the m8 firmware I post an then flash a updated ROM an your all up to date no ota so you never lose root...which isn't a big deal anyways I you just flash SuperSU zip in twrp..an yes there r GPE ROMs for the HTC m8 that are very very stable. As I can't speak for turbo I know you can't unlock that so no free WiFi hack like on m8.

Vzw blocks their devices from htcdev.com. which is a bootloader unlocking site..so you have to turn s-off to be able to unlock bootloader....but sunshine will s-off an unlock bootloader for you...so after that you need to flash a twrp recovery then flash SuperSU.zip with recovery. If VZW didn't block htcdev you could leave s-on an unlock an root. Let me know if you have any more questions. Sunshine is safe to run. You download app an it checked will check to see if it can run s-off for you then it will ask you to pay before it does its stuff.

LG V10 (AT&T and Verizon) Bootloader

Hello! This may not be the place to put this thread, so please, if it is mistakenly placed, feel free to move it.
I wanted to create a thread for people who want to post their progress on unlocking the boot loader for AT&T and Verizon.
*I really hope this phone gets unlocked*

Yes, they have had boot loader unlock since day one. T-Mobile was nice enough that they had it unlocked for their users, but us, we are lost without custom roms.
Hopefully everyone put their money where their mouths were and ponied up their pledge when tungkick rooted freaking everyone that wasn't tmobile. Glad to give up some more money if the bootloader can be unlocked

What about AOSP, Custom recovery, custom Boot logo, custom kernel to boost performance, increase battery life and SOT.
Say it with me "CM13 Nightlies on LG V10 for AT&T"
Just having root and exposed is like having your birthday cake w/ candles and not being able to blow them out and eat it.
Just want TWRP
I have my VS990 rooted on 5.1.1, running XPosed, Viper4A (all streaming apps like TuneIn, XM, etc. all processing correctly), and FOTA's disabled by debloating.
All good, yes?
Problem is, three steps forward, two steps back. I've had to nuke the phone several times after softbricking it trying to get a new feature implemented. Loving that 11b rooted file...
ALL I want is to be able to do a nice, simple TWRP nandroid. FlashFire backup doesn't work because it can't mount the system partition when you try to restore. I've created an ADB backup (full) with FlashFire, but I'm not gonna run restore with it until I have to (read: next softbrick).
If someone out there has a good, easy way to backup the entire phone, I'd love to hear about it. Not Titanium, either. Not what I'm looking for.
Thanks.

Advice on Rooting & a clean ROM for Verizon M8

Hi All,
I've had the M8 from Verizon for over a year. I bought this unlocked from the US but am using it in Europe (Denmark) with another service provider. However, as you know Verizon has its bloatware on it and various restrictions that do not let me use the wifi hotspot, USB tethering, etc. Apart from various nagging issues, the most annoying is that I haven't been able to upgrade the ROM (due to another Verizon restriction). And I'm still stuck with OS - 4.4.2.
The questions I need advice on:
1) I want to have a clean ROM and still have the facility to update my OS OTA every time google releases an upgrade.
2) I understand this requires root on my device. If so, what is the best root method for this device? There were a lot of methods around and I'm honestly confused.
I have attemted to root my last HTC One X and succeded after a while. But then when I tried tranferring the phone's data via the built in transfer data app..the phone froze and bricked itself in a way. As I had this device with me by then, I did not spend time to recover the One X, yet. Therefore, my apprehension to get a ROM that I will not need to worry about too much and it would be clean and let my phone function efficiently and without any nags.
Any and all advice will be appreciated!
Thank you.

are you S-OFF? check in bootloader. turn off device. hold volume down and power to enter bootloader and it will say S-ON or S-OFF.
If you are not S-OFF you the only way to get root is using Sunshine - http://theroot.ninja/ - it costs a very fair $25.
After that you can flash custom recovery and then flash ROMs that have tethering unlocked in the ROM.
you can also without root or anything and being S-ON flash the latest Verizon RUU and get your phone up to date instead of being on KK, we now have MM. - http://forum.xda-developers.com/verizon-htc-one-m8/general/official-ruu1-55-605-2-t2883845

Hi andybones,
Thank you. Sorry for the delay.
The bootloader says S-On.
Do you suggest flashing a stock ROM? What about the bloatware and the restrictions from Verizon?
Secondly, will it be possible to get the OTA updates if I have a clean ROM? If so, any suggestions on a clean and efficient ROM that would get me the OTAs automatically and not have the hassle to flash new ROMs as quite simply I hate having to add my google and other account details keyed in each time I flash and have a new ROM.
Thank you for your reply.

T-Mobile 7 Pro converted to international; Couple root/bootloader questions.

Today I received a T-Mobile, SIM unlocked, OnePlus 7Pro GM1915.
I have already followed the steps to flash international firmware and that went fine. Only issue I had was my SIM was being detected but no service, an OTA update to 10.0.3 fixed that issue. I haven't had a phone with root access/unlocked bootloader since my 1st gen Moto X so excuse my ignorance if some of these question are common sense, but I've done some searching online and can't find any straight forward answers.
1. Now that I have installed the international firmware I don't need to get a bootloader unlock from T-Mobile, correct? I can just use the OEM unlock option and unlock via fastboot?
2. I know bootloader/root can sometimes cause certain applications to not function, but I've also read Magisk has a setting to correct this. I'm mainly just concerned with Google Pay, is there a method for it to still function with root?
3. Part of me would actually like to use the phone stock for a week or so to see if I even feel like I need root access. I am currently on OS 10.0.3, if I update to the newest OS (looks like 10.3.1 is the newest) will I still be able to root with Magisk? I would assume yes since you can do an OTA update and keep Magisk, but I just wanted to verify.
Again, sorry if some of this is common sense, but I've searched around and can't find straight forward answers fort any of this.
First, sim unlocked you're good to go. No need to bother T-Mobile. Bootloader unlock is through OnePlus. Guides aplenty here, search will turn up what you need. I'm personally running the box stock firmware unrooted and at the moment I'm very happy with it.fotr the first time in a long time I don't see much value in going through the process of rooting because the stock ROM pretty much has everything that I used to get with rooting and a custom ROM. I will probably do it anyway at some point, just because I feel wierd not having root.

Thanks for the feedback.
I think I'm going to update to the newest firmware. Worst case I decide I want to root I'll use MSM and downgrade, my phone will get wiped when I unlock my bootloader anyway.

I found an app called block this. It does a good job and doesn't need root. It might not block ads on YouTube but it gets rid of the annoying ones in games.
