Stylo 2 Plus first impressions (T-Mobile) - LG G Stylo Questions & Answers

My frustration with the GPS on the Stylo boiled over yesterday, to the point that I smacked the phone hard enough that it would no longer talk to the SD card. I was looking for an excuse to trash it anyway, so I went down to my local T-Mobile store, as I was thinking about the Stylo 2 Plus.
I had a look at the phone, and discovered that the Stylo 2 Plus does NOT put the GPS/NFC antenna on the back cover. :highfive: If there had been an antenna on the cover, I wouldn't have bought it, no way, no how.
I went ahead and bought one, brought it home, and set it up. I'm happy to say that the GPS on the Stylo 2 Plus is vastly better than the original Stylo. It locks on in under five seconds, where the old one often would take a minute even when GPS Tools was showing signal bars.
Keep in mind that it uses a Nano SIM, so if you're moving over from an old Stylo you'll need to call customer service to move your account to the supplied SIM.
Upgrades vs. the old Stylo:
1080p screen (vs 720p)
8 MP front-facing camera (vs. 5 MP)
Octa-core CPU (vs. quad-core)
GPS that actually works well
Phone senses when the pen is removed
Downgrades:
Main camera lacks laser autofocus
I don't have root/TWRP
The camera seems to have some sort of image stabilization, but it's not clear whether it's digital or optical. The camera app is still dumbed-down, but that's really not a big deal for me; if I'm going to be taking any pictures that need more than full-auto point-and-shoot, I'll use my Lumix for that.
So far, battery life seems to be every bit as good as the old Stylo was, The phone is noticeably more responsive (particularly when bringing up a Google News "AMP" story in Firefox). There's also less bloatware, and much of it is removable (except for Lookout, which I disabled).
The 3.5mm headphone jack is on the bottom edge instead of the top, and the sound is quite good through my Sennheiser earbuds.
I'm not sure I'm going to bother rooting this one. It was enough of a hassle keeping the OS current on my old Stylo that I'm inclined to just leave it alone unless I find a compelling reason to try.
The model display shows LG-K550 is the model number, but "MS550" is stamped inside, so I'd assume the MetroPCS version has identical hardware.
Overall, I'd say it's a worthy successor to the original Stylo, and admirably fixes the worst issue with the old model.

As far as I know, the phone still has 720p resolution. At least my Stylo 2 Plus from T-Mobile.
Unless I'm crazy and it's actually 1080p and just reporting 720p.

You can also activate a replacement SIM via "Chat," though not all reps have the "tools" to do so and will "suggest" that you call. I end the chat and immediately ask if the rep can activate a SIM to save time. If they can, they'll send a confirmation code to your phone via SMS that you enter into the chat and then they can activate it immediately. I prefer this way rather than over the phone because of frequent language obstacles and the (my) having to read a 16-digit serial number to them and hope they get it right. With "Chat", I can copy and paste and I know they'll input the correct SIM serial.
As a note, you used to be able to activate a replacement SIM entirely online, but they removed that apparatus and now require human intervention about a year ago for some reason.

Any USB OTG on the new Stylo 2? My original T-mobile Stylo with Marshmallow (stock 20g) is missing OTG, so I have to use my old Sony Xperia Z for my Flir One Android thermal imaging camera and my SDR receivers (RTL-SDR and SDRPlay).

No OTG support.

Is the camera better quality?

Without root you can change your resolution with ADB. I did it on the first Stylo and made it 1080p. Ran slower of course so I set it back to 720p. I got the idea from a thread about the LG G4 and how it ran better at a lower resolution.
And no, I'm not talking about my DPI.... but I do change that on my devices.

Just got a Stylo 2 Plus (MS550 MetroPCS model) off craigslist yesterday, did the full run of unlocking the bootloader/installing TWRP/rooting/installing Xposed/modules/enabling adoptable storage/etc and I have to say I'm very impressed with this device overall. It's still somewhat laggy I suppose even with 8 freakin' cores but that's too be expecting given the way stock ROMs always run.
Now that we have the unlocked bootloader and all the other things I certainly hope someone takes enough of an interest in it to do a proper CM build. I saw some posts from others that said one person was looking into it, doing some preliminary work but so far nothing major has been announced. Would love to get a custom kernel with some proper governor support since by default - and I don't know why they do this - LG sets the damned CPU to run at 960 MHz minimum constantly which is ridiculous and a waste of power. Yes I know this phone has awesome battery life already (mainly because of the 1280x720 LCD display more than anything else) but even so wasting power for no good reason and not allowing the Snapdragon 430 to drop down to maybe 300 MHz (I don't honestly know what the minimum is because I can't get any apps to read the hardware info properly) is just stupid.
I'm sitting here staring at the phone and I've got CPU-Z running and it's got 960 MHz on 4 cores and 1094 MHz on 2 others with the final 2 being offline aka "stopped" at the moment. I mean only CPU-Z is running (apps that I start up) aside from system services and they certainly don't require that kind of horsepower at idle. I know from experience of using other devices with the low and mid-range SoCs that they rarely ever clock up and down across the full range possible but it's because of the manufacturers of the smartphones and their crappy frequency handling that mucks things up.
Love the newer slimmer design over the original Stylo, but I note according to some posted information that the other variants sold outside the US have 3GB of RAM and can have the 1920x1080 panel in them so I'm wondering if it might be possible to find a parts supplier with one of those and do a panel/display assembly swap at some point. Mind you I actually like 1280x720 because it's faster in terms of response but I wouldn't mind a 1920x1080 panel in this Stylo 2 Plus if I can make it happen.
Definitely worth the money I paid for it ($80), unlocked it using the unlocking app, using it with T-Mobile's $30 plan, no issues noted. My only gripe at this moment is the lack of OTG support, that really bugs me pretty severely and it's the one thing right now that I am disappointed in not having (I use that extensively with other devices and SDR hardware with the SDR Touch app for radio monitoring). Would be nice to hack that capability but that's a foregone conclusion.
But absolutely a great product overall, and for some reason the sound quality is pretty awesome; I have all my CDs trancoded to Opus format and on the Stylo 2 Plus playback with GoneMAD is quite nice indeed so far.
Here's to someone making a custom ROM based on CM 13 or 14 a possibility.

No, as bad or worse. Laser autofocus has been removed, so it struggles to focus even in good light.

OnePlus One – Review
The OnePlus One is without a doubt one of the most anticipated mobile devices of 2014, thanks in part to it’s awesome hype campaign. Despite over promising and under delivering in regards to availability the device is still very sought after. When you look at the fact that OnePlus are a startup company (yes, with some help from Oppo), it really is amazing the amount of attention they garnered.
So after much waiting I finally have a OnePlus One in my possession. Will it live up to it’s hype or fall flat on it’s face? Let’s have a look at the device and see what it can do.
Unboxing
I received my invite and was informed I had 24 hours to use it or it would be gone. Needless to say, I used it as soon as I got home. Ordering from the site was easy but to my dismay the only shipping option was DHL. Sure DHL are fast, but I always get rather large additional charges from them. With no other choice I put the order through knowing that it would arrive with money owing to the carrier.
Just as expected the device arrived within several days as it shipped out of California and arrived in Canada. Also as expected there was money owing. $61 to be exact. Keep in mind that this is on top of the almost $30 I paid for DHL shipping. So realistically my $349 flagship killer had jumped to almost $449. Still a good deal? Keep reading to find out.
The parcel was in a simple thin bubble wrap envelope. Luckily the actual box and packaging on OnePlus’ part is solid so the device arrived in mint condition. When I opened the box I noticed that they had not cheaped out on the appearance and the presentation gives you the feeling of a quality company and device. The wall charger came boxed separately to ensure you recieve the proper one for your region. In side was the device, a micro USB cable, instructions and a SIM tool. Also included was a wall charger but like I mention that had it’s own box.
So far so good.
You can check out the unboxing video here.

Physical features
The OnePlus One measures 152.9 x 75.9 x 8.9 mm and weights 162g. Despite the 8.9mm thickness the nice contour on the back of the device make it very comfortable and feel much thinner than it actually is. It’s also worth noting that the back is textured and gives it a nice slightly granular feel.
On the bottom of the phone is the micro USB port and speakers.
On the left is the volume rocker and SIM slot (It’s a micro SIM).
The right hand side has the power button.
The top has the 3.5mm headphone jack.
The front facing camera is on the top left of the device.
The rear camera and dual LED flash is located on the top center.
Impressed so far? I am, let’s turn it on.
Display
The OnePlus One carries the typical 2014 Chinese flagship display size of 5.5 inches. The display is 1080p with a 401 ppi and is very crisp. I can’t really complain about anything in regards to the screen. It’s bright, clear, crisp, responsive and solid. Many early customers were complaining about yellowing on the display, I can say my device did not have any of those issues. Either it was just a small number of devices or they fixed it. +1 for the One.
Software
The OnePlus One being sold outside of China is running Cyanogenmod 11s which is based on Android 4.4.2 KitKat and was designed specifically for the device. It retains enough of a stock feel that users won’t feel completely lost but does have customization available. Themes, font, icons etc are all interchangeable, some for free, some for a cost. Everything runs buttery smooth with no real lags, no freezing, and thus no need to change out the launcher unless you simply want to. All apps I tried were compatible and it is important to note that Google apps including the Play Store were already loaded on the phone.
The only thing I didn’t like was the base layout and method of customizing the pulldown menu for quick access to things like wi-fi, bluetooth, gps, etc. It didn’t have all the standard icons available and was overly complicated to adjust.
The boot time was an average 28 seconds.
Wi-Fi
I have recently moved so the layout of my testing grounds has also changed. Where I use to have a main floor, an upstairs, and a basement, I now have just a main floor and basement but they larger. I mention this just in case you are comparing these results to ones from my previous reviews as they will differ.
The OnePlus One has 5 Ghz and 2.4 Ghz Wi-Fi so I tested both.
5 Ghz
Router (basement) = 82.61 mbps
Main floor =38.55 mbps (I got to the halfway point of this level and the signal went from around 40mbps to no signal within a couple of feet. This was at one level up and 24 feet from the router.
2.4 Ghz
Router = 47.84 mbps
Main floor = 16.31 mbps at the furthest point of this level, which is one level up and about 48 feet from the router.
Even at the furthest point of the house the OnePlus One had fast enough 2.4 Ghz Wi-Fi for any streaming and or browsing I needed.
Good Wi-Fi results.
Call Quality
The OnePlus One did a very good job with the calls I made. Volume was good on both ends as was the clarity. If you are a talker, you shouldn’t have any issues with what the OnePlus One sounds like.
Speakers
The speakers are located on the bottom of the device as opposed to the back which many companies seem to favor. In general the bottom location is much better because the speaker doesn’t get muffled if you put the phone down on a surface. The only time it ends up being a hindrance is if you play a lot of video games. Then it can easily be muffled by your hand when holding the phone sideways. So it really does depend on how you use your phone.
Location aside, the sound that comes from the OnePlus One is very nice. It’s loud, and capable of impressive sounds in all scenario’s, whether it’s video games, hard rock, dance, dialogue in movies or special effects in movies, it sounds great. It was definitely more than what I was expecting.
Video Playback
I tested the phone using the stock video player as well as VLC. Video playback was fantastic regardless of format. In addition to the SD video’s, and online media, I tested it with some HD movies in various formats and all played equally well. If you like to watch media on your phone, the smooth playback, beautiful screen, and clear speaker quality will certainly impress.
Web Browsing
Stable ROM, 2.5 Ghz Snapdragon 801, and 3 GB of RAM… you can see were this is going. Web browsing, even with multiple windows open is a breeze for this handset. As would be expected, browsing is awesome on the phone. All actions respond quickly, pages load within a short period of time, and the overall feel is snappy.
Cameras
The OnePlus One has a 5MP front camera and a 13MP Sony IMX 214 that promises to give us some pretty good photography for a phone. The 6 lens optics and f/2.0 aperture make it a standout in todays market.
The front facing camera is crisp and perfect for video calls and those that love the selphie. The rear Sony camera doesn’t disappoint and delivers far above average shots. Regardless of environment the camera was consistent and delivered good pictures. The dual LED flash works well and buyers shouldn’t have any fear of low lighting situations. Are there phones that do photography better than the OnePlus One. Certainly. But the One can hold its own with the upper part of the market.
GPS
The GPS on the device is fantastic. The first lock was done outdoors in airplane mode and took less than 5 seconds. Locks after that where almost instant. I tested the handset with Navfree that doesn’t use data and with Google Maps and Waze that use data to assist. In both scenarios the GPS was flawless and quick to adapt. One of the better GPS’ I have used recently.
Benchmarks
With a Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 and 3 GB of RAM I think it’s safe to say that most people would expect the phone to score well. The question is “How well?”
Let’s take a look at the results.
Antutu
38,823
That’s enough to take out the best of the best.
Nenamark 2
61.4 fps
CPU Prime
7259
Vellamo
Vellamo has changed recently, and have added a multicore test into the mix.
Metal
1719
Multicore
1864
Chrome Browser
2772
As you can see the OnePlus One holds it’s own and slightly edges out the best phones on the market in the overall picture.
Battery
The battery was my only area of real concern. I know that a 3100 mAh battery was included, but would it play nicely with the ROM and actually last. I put the OnePlus One on auto brightness and used VLC to test the phone on a video loop. The phone lasted a staggering 10.5 hours!
The lower end of the battery actually runs down very smoothly and slower than the top part. I was left with 3% on the phone and am certain it could have lasted another 15 minutes of playback.
Very nice results.
Gaming
I’ve used Qualcomm 800 processors in the past and know they do very well with gaming thanks to the Adreno 330 GPU. The Snapdragon 801 is no exception and the handset played everything very well. Crisp, smooth gameplay with max resolution settings. Add in the beautiful screen and great speakers and you have a winning combo. The only thing I want to mention is the location of the speakers. While great for music and media, having them located on the bottom of the device does make it much easier to muffle them with your hand while playing games that require the screen to be held sideways. Can you work around it? Sure. It’s just your hand location is the last thing on your mind while you are being horded by a half dozen zombies and you are fighting for your life….or something like that.
Final thoughts
Pro’s
Comfortable, stylish design
Nice screen
GPS works well
Cameras are very good
Cyanogenmod 11s is stable and customizable with Google Play Store already installed
Plays media and games with ease
Powerhouse device that doesn’t drain the battery
4G
Con’s
Hard to get an invite
Shipping is expensive due to additional fee’s
Non -removable battery
No expansion slot so make sure you get the model that truly has the storage you need
Wow….this device really delivers. Even with the extra shipping costs the phone is still almost half the price of it’s rivals. Considering this is the first phone from a startup company, I’m really interested in seeing what they release next. With all the hype I was waiting for the phone to fall flat on it’s face and really under perform. That did not happen at all.
Are there better devices on the market right now? I believe so, but they aren’t much better. You just need to decide if they are worth double to cost.

[Q] Debating between Z3 and Moto X (2nd ed)

I am REALLY struggling deciding which of these two phones to go for.
I played a bit with a Z3 today and loved it. I have yet to get my hands on a Moto X (2nd ed) as they are no where to be found in the UK (in store).
Both cost more or less the same. The Z3 is a bit more expensive but not by much, maybe £50.
After viewing the phone specs side by side on phonearena they seem very similar. Battery life, camera and additional sd storage were two of the things that stood out.
Thoughts? TIA

I was struggling with the same difficulty
Since the screen on my n4 broke, i was looking for an upgrade
The only agvantages of the moto i found out were the amoled screen, close to stock rom and fast updates. Nothing great in hardware section.
The z3 has many advantages over the moto x like the amazing battery life, sd card support till 128gb, better development for now, etc
1) moto doesn't have much development for now while we have a custom kernel for stock Sony rom with OC'ing, UV'ing and an unofficial cm11 build. Most of the development of z2 and z1 can be ported
2)white balance on my z3 is amazingly accurate! My whites are whiter than almost any phone ive conpared to
3) low light imaging on z3 is amazing and noisy on moto x
4) at the end of the day when i am left with 30% charge i feel great (cell recieption is horrible in goa). I've seen the battery thread in moto x section and they have 2-3h SoT with one day of usage (6h i get on my z3)
5) camera on z3 is nothing special unless it's on manual mode
Now I'd suggest you to ask the same question in moto x thread and then decide carefully!
hey TIA,
I was under the same dilemma until a couple of days ago. My post might seem to look like a cliche or would have the same content which you must have read elsewhere, but bear with me on this.
I wanted to get the Nexus 6, couldn't as Google's being a **** by delaying its release. Then I shifted my attention towards Moto X which was almost identical to Nexus 6 (except for screen and camera). There was a flash sale on 29th / 30th October on Motorola UK site. I didn't buy any (still couldn't decide). However, after the sale, the price boosted back up and it was a bit too steep for me. For the same price range I could get a LG G3 or Sony Xperia Z3. I spent countless hours (2 days) to outweigh the features and decide.
The LG G3 has amazing 5.5" large IPS screen with a resolution of 2560 x 1440 (which is 2K; also called as QHD), a 13MP back camera with 3 axis image stabilization and an Infra-red Laser rangefinder (which would make LG's camera a beast in terms of focusing, perceiving depth and smooth motion recording) and a 2.1MP front camera capable of recoding and shooting 4K pictures. It comes with 2 GB RAM and a Quadcore 2.5GHz Krait CPU all powered by a 3000 mAh battery. Apart from that the G3 has regular flagship standard features like 16 GB ROM, 128 GB microSD card support, FM, LTE+, NFC, IR, WiFi, BT, GPS & GLONASS.
The Sony Xperia Z3, comes with a comparably smaller 5.2" screen with a resolution of 1080 x 1920 (which is 1080p HD), and a whopping 20.7MP camera which is being considered as one of the best for now. The camera is capable of recording 4K images and videos. On the flip side, it has a 2.2MP camera. It also comes with 3GB RAM and a Quadcore 2.5GHz Krait CPU same as LG G3. However, its being powered by a 3100 mAh battery. The Z3 also has standard flagship features like 16 GB ROM, 128 GB microSD card support, LTE, FM, NFC, WiFi, BT, GPS, Beido. It also supports Quick Charge 2.0 for faster charging.
Finally, the Moto X has a similarly sized screen to that of Xperia Z3, a 5.2" screen from Samsung's AMOLED line with a resolution of 1080 x 1920 (which is 1080p HD) . It sports a 13 MP back camera which takes pictures at 4128 x 3096 ( a bit higher than 4K) and 2MP front camera. The Moto X does not have a microSD card slot nor a FM. It runs on 2GB RAM and same CPU as mentioned above.
These features were too tempting, but spending £450 on a phone which I may replace in a year or so wasnt' ideal for me. so, after working out the pricing, I decided to go for a contract with 3. 3 offers 24 month contract with 600 minutes, unltd texts an 1GB internet (which is enough for me) for £28 a month. so £28 * 24 = £672 and I get a free phone!; If I decided to get a phone on its own and use one off contract, then it would cost me £15 a month * 24 months = £360 + £450 (phone) = £810.
So I went with Xperia Z3 just because of its camera picture quality, 3GB RAM, and Playstation Integration and I went with 3 just because it saves me ~£100 which I can use it for something else.
If you want "Google"-ness on your phone, then go with Moto X, If you want a phone with huge RAM and awesome camera, go with Xperia Z3, if you want a phone to take great 4K videos then go with G3.
There is, how ever a 4th alternative, OnePlus's One. You can get it for ~£200 +/- £50 off Amazon. which is a blend of all three phones (without 4K display) I've heard its a good phone. If you are on a tight budget I would suggest you to get this NOT FROM AMAZON, but from official site.

Hi emclondon,
I was gutted when the rumors of the Nexus 6 being 6" were true. That is a phablet and too big for comfort (and my small girly hands). I was so looking forward to it.
I went on the Nexus 6 forum to ask for alternatives. I was given a few but the top three where:
1) Moto X - Online purchase only. Seems like an amazing phone but it cannot be found anywhere to play with it.
2) Dorid - Not out in the UK yet
3) Z3 - Hands on advantage (Westfield Shepherds Bush has a stand)
Although pure android is important, the camera of the Z3 is hard to beat. I travel quite a bit and I was impressed with the camera features.
I was actually offered a great deal from Carphone Warehouse. 1000 minutes, unlimited txt and 2gb with EE for £30 on a 24 mo contract with no money to pay upfront. I pretty much did the same calculations you so kindly noted.
There are not a whole lot of draw backs on the phone aside from the glass screen WHICH I have on my Nexus 4. Despite the amount of times I have dropped it, thanks to the awesome screen and back protector (and the bumper), it is in great condition. I'll be getting the same brand for my new phone.
OK so, I think I have made my decision. THANK YOU guys for taking the time to contribute and helping me out decide what new toy to get!
:victory: happy dance :victory:
Both are great, but in my opinion Z3 is better because:
1. Much greater battery life
2. LCDs don't burn in like AMOLED, AMOLED also uses more power in web pages (white background)
3. Better speakers
4. Better camera especially if you use manual mode.
np TIA, let me know what you went for
I went with the z3 personally
but not for the camera... (i think the camera is overrated if you ask me!! - originally i had a g3 and i gotta tell you .. having a quick camera with instant focus real makes for a great real world camera... although g3 pictures not as good as z3 in terms of overall quality)
the kicker for me on the z3 is the battery life..
Not just the standard battery life which is about 2 days but also the excellent stamina mode. (which when the battery is low can give you an extra 5 or so hours depending)
I do prefer stock android though so i've tried to make the z3 as stock as possible with the L theme , nova installed, custom keyboard.

Sounds like what I would have to say too. Getting the Z3 to look stock as possible. Z3 is not a good point-and-shoot phone. My Nexus 5 did a whole lot better.
Yeah people really to seem to forget about the speed of the camera and real world usage. (they get blinded by the megapixel count! )
Well, I picked up the Z3 yesterday. I highly dislike all of the Sony crap in there and having to figure out what I ca dissable and or uninstall has not been fun (still at it).
I haven't had time to play with the camera as I've spent most of the time transferring files over and trying to figure out why the msgstore.db.crpt7 file from whatsapp doesn't want to move to the new phone grrrrr.
I am staring to miss the purity of the nexus' sigh!
congrats!
Yeah I agree that some of the bloatware is annoying. I just left it as I'm waiting for stable ASOP or Sony branded lollipop release now.
Why can't you copy the crypt* files? did you try copying the whole whatsapp folder? also you could use smsbackuprestore to transfer all your texts across the phone. Very handy tool.

I used smsbackuprestore, I love that app. So easy to use! In regards to WA, It copies all the files except for of the 9 inside of the database folder, one of these being the msgstore.db.crypt7 file. I get an error as posted on the attached pic.
I should be getting the case and screen protector tomorrow. It is fun learning to use the new phone but a bit overwhelming as I want to take full advantage of its features.

Just triend it, didn't work
Everything else copied smoothly
alright, lets do this.
You don't need all the files from that folder. so, go ahead and delete the files from msgstore-2014-10-31.* till msgstore-2014-11-05.* but leave the msgstore.db and msgstore-2014-11-06.* and msgstore-2014-11-07.*
fire up your whatsapp app, go to settings > chat and click 'Backup Conversations'. This will create a new msgstore file with current date in its file name. (lets say if you've clicked it now, you'll find a file named msgstore-2014-11-9.* and will replace msgstore.db's contents (it updated it).
go back to the folder and start deleting all files except msgstore.db and the file you've created just now (msgstore-2014-11-9.*) and try copying them , chances are that they should be copied without any problems.
if it still doesn't work, one another way I can think of is to copy the file onto a SD card; or move it to your google drive/docs. and redownload them on your phone.
hth
I am going for option two, much easier at this time at night lol. If this one fails, then I'll go with your first option. This would involve having to go through the whatsapp verification on my nexus as I have activated my account on the Z3.
So far, uploading the files to the google drive went well. I am now downloading them one by one on to the phone and hopefully it will let me transfer them into the databases folder on whatsapp crossing fingers

Well, copying the to google drive added [1] to each file and mid way through downloading to device it stopped. So I tried the same but with Box and it worked flawlessly.
Brillian emclondon!! THANK YOU!!! :victory: :good:
No Problem.
I've seen that you've abandoned you're Nexus 4 Logo. Have this:

What are the chances it gets an AOSP rom?

Let's not put the carriage before the horse, lol. It's not even released yet - this is just a leaked specs sheet. Final device might be different and we don't even know what markets VIVO will release it to, and you're talking about specific firmware
I've just been reading up on this device too.
What I can't understand is why Google (or any other manufacturer for that matter) DON'T release a phone with the same (or higher) specs. Google is a giant, so is Samsung. They sell more phones and have more reach than Vivo, so why can't there latest devices match Vivo?
In my opinion this new phone should have been the Nexus 6 - well, the Nexus 6 should have had those specs. Super thin. Bigger battery. Much bigger front camera with flash and much wider rear camera (with higher MP). FP scanner. Dedicated audio chipsets. This should've been the Nexus 6, so why wasn't it? Google could have kept the exact same price but actually given us premium specs, not the sub-par specs on the Nexus 6 (yes I said it, the N6 specs are not premium if phones like this Vivo exist/are about to enter the market).
I would buy this Vivo in a heartbeat if I can confirm these things:
- Does it have buttons on the screen? I hate that - I love how Nexus phones have zero buttons on the face of the device.
- Can I install Vanilla android and make this phone function as a vanilla phone - aka Nexus?
- Is the screen used on this phone actually any good. Sure, QHD sounds great but the quality of the screen needs to be comparable to the Note 4/iPhone 6+ to make me consider it.
- Are the cameras of top quality? On paper they READ fantastic, but how do they really perform?
If these four questions get solid answers then this phone would be perfect for me and I'm sure that if this phone was released with vanilla android running, it would knock the Nexus and Galaxy phones out of the park. Not to mention that it is about $300 AUD cheaper than the Nexus 6. A no brainer. Great specs and value.
Specs are great the only thing the article doesnt mention is LTE support in north America?
Without that its a paper weight despite the fact that everything else is amazing.
This is the big issue with alot of chinese phones...lack of LTE support although that does appear to be changing.
sent from Canada my Note 4, 3, 2 or One X+

It should have LTE support as I've read a few things which claim that it will. As long as it supports 700MHZ '4GX' (Telstra) then that would be fantastic.
Also hope the device doesnt look like the picture in the first post.

Your question is purely a software issue. This device has Qualcomm's Snapdragon 805 in it and Qualcomm's chips started supporting worldwide LTE since Snapdragon 801 - all 41 LTE bands. What bands are enabled in the firmware to use is purely a software question, and there is plenty of devs and dev teams like Cyanogen, who can enable additional LTE bands and write their own drivers, since KitKat sources are available.

It's all part of the plan. Giants like Samsung already have the technology for stuff like the GS6, Note 5, etc. They're not "working on it", it's all ready to go. Component manufacturers like Qualcomm have their next (and next) gen stuff ready too. They're just sitting on it. Apple is the worst with this. I'm not saying this to start a flame war, I'm just talking facts.
Why just sit on it?
To leave you hungry for the next thing. Take Apple for example. When the iPhone 4S came out, Verizon and AT&T were rolling out LTE. What did the iPhone 4S have? HSPA 14.4Mb/s. Faster than the 7.2Mb/s that the iPhone 4 had, sure, but it wasn't LTE. It wasn't until the iPhone 5 came out that they had LTE. Why? So they can say that the iPhone 5 is faster than the 4 and 4S. Why did they sit on LTE? To sell more iPhones. Another example is the iPad Mini. The first Mini had a low res screen with a pitiful 162ppi. Half a year after the iPad 3 came out with a "retina" display. It wasn't until a year later the Mini 2 had a display that was decent. Why sit on the tech? To make people who like their iPad Mini to want to buy an iPad Mini 2.
Giants like Samsung and Apple can continue this strategy because it works for them, and it works for them because they have an established customer base, and an established potential customer base. Often I've heard people say that they're sick of their current phone, and they want to get the new Galaxy S whatever, or that they never switched from Samsung. And Apple fans are pretty dang loyal. Other companies have to pull out all the stops in order to compete. Samsung and Apple don't have to, because people are going to buy their phones anyway.

Thank you for this answer; I feel like I already knew it but was in a bit of denial about it. These Chinese phones have amazing specs. If they release it as I said above without capacitive buttons on the front of the device, I will buy it and do everything I can to install vanilla Android to turn it into a 'nexus' phone.
I guess my little voice wont change much in the grand scheme of things but it is terrible that we have to pay (in my case) $960+ for a Nexus 6 with worse specifications than this Chinese phone which will cost me (delivered) about $450 to $510. Anyone that calls Apple/Samsung/Nexus etc phones 'top-of-the-line' must be kidding themselves; anyone that says they are good value is joking in my opinion.
For the record the Galaxy S6 will probably still have a worse front facing camera, speakers and be thicker than this upcoming Vivo smartphone. Sad, but probably true. Such is the Western world in which we live.
Some actual pictures of the phone leaked today
That looks awesome, if it's real and I can get one in the UK somehow, I will deffinitely get one over the Note 4!
The rendered one looks impossible to make a phone that slim (and is different to the one in the other photo). Found some more actual pictures of what may or may not be the Xplay 5S on GSMArena but can't post because I am a new user.
Your pictures dont show front facing buttons and look super thin.
The real world leaked pictures look much thicker (still thin, though) with front facing buttons.
I will get this if it doesn't have front facing buttons and all the specs line up.
You can see the pictures I'm talking about here: http://www.phonearena.com/news/Vivos-future-powerhouse--the-Xplay-5S--poses-for-the-camera_id62679
According to this site and some others, the phone will use the Snapdragon 810 processor.
http://www.trustedreviews.com/news/vivo-xplay-5-could-be-first-snapdragon-810-powered-device
I need to see this phone before I believe it but as I said above - no front facing buttons & all the specs line up, I will get it and find a way for someone to install stock android on it.
Read on another blog the phone will have sapphire screen and will have better build quality than Oppo phones

[REVIEW] uleFone Be Touch: 5,5" IPS, 4G, 64bits octa-core CPU, 3GB RAM, fingerprint

[REVIEW] uleFone Be Touch: 5,5" IPS, 4G, 64bits octa-core CPU, 3GB RAM, fingerprint
uleFone is one of new Chinese brands making good things lately. And in the same way some players are doing, they also wanted to present something interesting before the summer period.
But they want to be like "the others", so they have come with an amazing smartphone which they have presented as their flagship device for the season: the uleFone Be Touch
Something very interesting, since this brand is very young. They’ve worked designing and making parts for other brands during years, but it wasn’t until 2014 they moved to manufacture their own smartphones.
When I opened the box my first though was about that size "It's huge!". But then, I started it and as Megan Trainor sings... "It's all about that bass"
Only that smartphone is not fat at all, it's very thin and light. It's even thinner than other thin devices like the Siswoo Cooper i7 I reviewed some weeks ago.
But let's go step by step.
Design and package
The box is quite standard, white, same shape that we can typically find for the iPhones or Samsung devices, for example. With a sticker showing some info and then most of the specifications on the bottom part.
Once opened, we can see the amazing Be Touch with its huge screen inside a soft bag and on the lower level, we have all the rest which is USB cable, charger (attention 1.5A! more than common units), headphones and quick start guide in English and other European languages... it's not something very necessary (we all know how to start the phone and take a picture) but it's really the first time I see it. And not one single item in Chinese. Sincerely that feels like more quality.
I live you that video with those impressions and something more:
Summarizing, on the front we have the 5,5" screen. On the top, frontal camera for selfies...with flash!!, light and proximity sensor. And on the bottom we have the navigation buttons: menu, back and home... which integrates a great surprise in form of fingerprint reader. Of all that I will talk more in detail.
On the left side we will find the lock/power and the volume buttons.
Going to the bottom side, just the micro and speaker (very iPhone-like). We have the holes for micro USB and jack exit on the top side, and nothing at all on the right side.
If we flip the phone, on the rear part we will see the main camera (using the Sony IMX214 4th gen sensor) with dual led flash and on the middle the uleFone logo.
All that within very tight dimensions of 158.1x77.4x8.6mm and another advantage is that it fits very well on the hand. It’s true that it’s big, but it doesn’t slip.
Hardware specifications
When you put the mark "flagship" over a product, you really want to mean that device is your top-range. Especially when you are a new player on the field and you want to set up what is your quality level and left aside your “Chinese stamp mark”. The Be Touch is much more than 64 bit octa-core processor and 3GB of RAM…So here it is what hides inside this thin beast.

Regarding the connectivity, needless to say it fully covers all our needs. The WiFi connects and transfers very fast, probably the improvements from Lollipop help, because I haven’t had any troubles of losing signal (as it happened with other devices). I have tried the BT with headphones (Digicare DO) and also with a BT keyboard, working both very well, quick pairing.
The SIM (standard and micro sizes) are located just next to the microSD slot, so sincerely a little bit hard to introduce the card, but once done, the networks are fast detected and connected, so I could use 3G/4G and also make calls very successfully. The voice is very clear and with enough volume.
Display
This is one of the most attracting points of this device. Its 5,5” IPS OGS screen with Corning Gorilla Glass of 3rd generation offers a resolution of 1280x720ppp. I can say that up to the date it’s the best display I’ve seen on a not first brand phone. The quality of the colors and the bright is amazing.
It comes with the dynamic control (adaptive brightness), so it automatically adapts to the lighting conditions to increase or reduce the bright level, making perfectly viewable even under sunshine.
Following the last trends, it also have the “Off-Screen Gesture” function, each time more common and sincerely very useful, since we can program several applications or functions to start without having to unlock the phone: camera, radio, calendar,.. any of the installed apps can be started by drawing a pattern on the locked screen.
Camera
We arrive to one of the most critical points of each review, since normally the manufacturers include camera sensors with a high number of megapixels but not offering the expected quality. uleFone advised they wanted to make the difference and present a great device, so they equipped the Be Touch with a main camera of 13Mpx with a Sony IMX214 4th generation sensor. Apparently this should be a warranty, but we’ve seen many other phones with good lenses giving poor results.
Fortunately this is not (so much) the case with the Be Touch. Until now this is the best (Chinese) one on the quality of pictures and videos. There is still the point to improve when there are poor light conditions. But I repeat the quality even though is much better than with other smartphones.
Here below some examples:
Another surprise comes with the front camera, the chosen sensor is OV5648 from Omni Vision, a high-performance, low-cost 5-megapixel CameraChip sensor for smartphones and tablets, which uses the latest 1.4-µm OmniBSI+ pixel architecture. But what surprised me was to find a led flash next to this camera. No questions about the selfies fever we’re immersed on, so the flash is doubtless a way to increase the quality of our portraits.
Regarding the videos, you can see this FullHD sample recorded outdoors, and even using zoom the quality is really good.
Software
This model comes directly with Android 5.0 Lollipop, so very good news since we have the almost last version of Android since the beginning, with all the improvements already mentioned on different articles like the better battery consumption, more secure environment since first boot, RAM management, WiFi connectivity issues solved, OK Google,…
By the other hand, need to say, that no Chinese stuff (apps) were installed on the phone, very clear Android [Símbolo] Only an icon called “ulefone” which brings us to the manufacturer website.
Another of the key points on the Be Touch is the fingerprint scanner, integrated on the “Home” button. It works really fast (some people say it’s even faster than the TouchID on the iPhone 6), and the way it register new fingers is different from other sensors where we had to slide our fingers. On this case we just have to put the desired finger repeatedly on the sensor until we have the full print marked on red on the screen. Meaning it has been fully recorded.
My suggestion is to place the finger on different positions, so it catches it from different angles and completes the task faster. We can register up to 5 fingers, which is a significant improvement against other devices allowing only 3 prints.
Due to the size of its screen and its powerful hardware, the Be Touch is perfect for entertainment. I installed Kodi (formerly known as XBMC), so I can play FullHD movies and TV shows directly from my NAS over the LAN, without any lags, smoothly and with very high quality of image and sound.
Normally I just try some games like Asphalt or Fifa (no need to say they go like lightning), however, bearing in mind the fingerprint sensor I decided to install my company’s software and use it as mobile office.
Yes, the BYOD is a real trend all around us I installed MaaS360, and configured mail, agenda and other tools. Once again it’s not only the speed of everything I try, jumping quickly from one task to another, but also the size of the screen makes this device very comfortable to read emails, see (and edit) Office documents, use CRM tools… really comfortable, especially when I compared to y iPhone 5’s tiny screen.
Autonomy
As stated above on the specifications table, the Be Touch is equipped with a removable battery of 2.550mAh, more than enough for a full day with average use: calls, wifi browsing, emails, whatsapp, pictures, social networking, Office documents editing… and all that thinking that the use of corporate tools and apps consume more battery.
Conclusions
A couple of months ago I saw the announcement of the Xiaomi MiNote and I really liked it. I though it was a real alternative to first brands smartphones with quality enough and a restrained price. I sincerely didn’t know so much about uleFone yet, and others brand had showed important improvements but still not at a comparable level to first brands.
I’m not meaning that the Be Touch has the same quality of the last Samsung Galaxy S6, but honestly it’s getting close. uleFone should still improve the management of taking pictures with dark conditions and polish some other minor details.
When I opened the box, I presumed that phone was very powerful but maybe too big for a daily use and still had to test the camera results, I take pictures every day. After using it, I can say that it’s a very comfortable device, not heavy at all (just 160gr) and since it’s very thin, it fits very well on the pocket.
I completely recommend it if you are looking for a new smartphone with a lot of possibilities and for a moderated price, around 205€ with Etotalk.com
PS: If you like this post, I'll appreciate if you click on the "Thanks!" button
Just to complete the info from the review above, here some pictures putting the Be Touch (in black) together with an iPhone 6 (white)
Couple of questions.
1. How about the audio quality, through speaker, through headphone?
2. How much heat is generated by the phone when watching youtube or when playing games?
And Lastly, Can you upload some full size images? Thanks for a great review.:good:
Hi, answering your questions:
The sound is very good in both cases. For example, with the Elephone P3000S I clearly notice a lack of volume that I don't appreciate here, I mean watching movies, listening music,... more than enough. In addition the speaker is on the side, not in the bottom, so it always deliver at maximum
Regarding the temperature. After a couple of hours watching Gotham (I finished the 1st season recently hehe) chapters on the Be Touch, it was just a little hot, but for example the iPhone5 gets much much hotter when using 3G for long.
About the pictures... I have published the same review in here -> http://dabarsocialmarketing.blogspot.ie/2015/05/ulefone-be-touch-simply-amazing-with-64.html
I hope the pictures are bigger in size at least if you download them. I can tell you the quality is really good. Some friends viewed those pictures and asked me if they were the samples included on the phone or real pictures taken by me... that's why I take one of my dog (the same that appears on the video sample).
Until now it's from far, the best chinese phone I've used.
Cheers

Thanks again. But I think those captured pictures are softer in the edges, sharper in the center. May be a software prob.
What is the data rate of video files? (In different resolutions)
My question is actually what kind of sd card to buy for that phone?
Doesn't it make sense to go for the expensive ones with higher speeds or 10mb/s is enough?

Hi, bearing in mind that it records video on FullHD, I wouldn't take a slow card. Personally I always take class 10 at least. If you can take a UHS class it will be better. Think that it's not only the video recording, at least I use to put a lot of stuff on the SD, so accessing apps, taking pictures, games, videos,... everything falls on the SD card, so the fastest the better.
For me, the class 10 is working well.

Has anyone tried 128GB sdcard?

67EUR is not that much... ok compared to 23EUR for 64GB is a little bit more per GB but still this phone did cost me 180...

Will this phone work with USA 4G/LTE? Specifically AT&T? I've heard the wifi range on it is pretty poor, can you confirm that?
Does anyone knows how to root this device? I tried with iRoot but didn't work.

yes this phone works with AT&T but no LTE does not work. as far as the wireless connection, this is true, it's not as strong as a g3 or an S five or an iPhone 6 but it isn't horrible. the build quality is very nice. it's worth what they're asking for it.

I have tried Kingroot , I root, and framaroot.
All were unsuccessful.
Also just read this phone will get 5.1 within the next 30 days.

Would the Moto X Pure be a real upgrade compared to the Idol 3 5.5?

I still like my Idol 3, even though it lags a bit since a little while. I'm rooted (using stock firmware) and started using Greenify, so I'll see if it's better with many apps "greenified".
But I'm tempted by the Moto X Pure (or Style, it's the same). The 3GB RAM (vs 2 GB for the Idol 3) and a better processor must make it quite faster than the Idol 3. And the camera is supposed to be better as well. I'm afraid the battery is worse than the Idol 3 from what I read though. I'm in Canada and the X Pure is a bit of a pain to buy because Motorola decided to only release the inferior X Play (only great thing vs the Pure seems the killer battery) here only...
What do you guys think?
Well, I'm sure Moto is better, but so it also should be, because at least here in Finland Moto is almost twice as expensive than Alcatel (Moto ~500€, Alcatel 280€)
I am also considering it.
It is a good phone, but did you think about the Nexus phones as well?
But I suggest you wait until we get MM,then try to think about it all.
That is what I am going to do myself.

Nexuses are a no go because I need a microSD card... If the Nexus had the damn SD slot, that would be so great...

Yeah, that is a flaw of a certain kind.
But,the 5x and 6p are still Nexii,theyhave fingerprint readers,minimalistic design,decent cameras and good SOCs.
As for lack of storage, one can always use cloud storage or have a 32GB hybrid USB(normal USB on one side, and micro USB/USB type C on the other side) in the pocket.
I have the 6045K which has no sd card slot. When you want something, you can always find a way!
Also,I dislike the body language of the Moto phones(the fat-in-the-middle design).
A phone these days has to feel good in hand and look good as well.

32GB is not enough for me. I just got the new SanDisk 200GB.... I need front-facing stereo speakers and microSD slot. Too bad Nexus doesn't qualify...
Ofcourse it is. UI is smooth. MXP is fast and just better than idol 3. Even more noticeable now when I grab my wife's Idol 3 - which feels like junk (UI microlags everywhere and overall just slow). Sorry, but it's the truth. Idol 3 rear flashlight is brighter though! And I do miss the full screen rotation. That's it.

I like also the moto x pure/style. But when i would be you i would wait untill the new MOTO X 2016 is released, because then the old models get discounted.
I like the camera on MOTO X Pure (at most the 720p 240fps slow motion)
And of course there is much much bigger comunity of moto x pure users.
In my humble opinion it depends on how you use your phone for.
Let's say, I would never upgrade to moto x pure cause the 808 on 2k screen is same as 615 on 1080p in 3d demanding tasks. Also the faster and more pixelated screen are more demanding on the battery consumption. Also with cm 12.1 custom roms like pac man or slim (big thanks to @The Marionette the idol 3 is on pair with much more expensive devices - my friend has huawei p9 that I'll never trade for Idol3).
The sound from speakers and headphones is similar, and you have viper4android if you want the next level of sound exp.
Camera is better in low light, you have flash on front, and some feature advantages but I'm satisfied for the most with idol.
The build quality is noticeable better, but idol is lighter and thinner.
So it really depends on your demands and needs. As the Marionette said above, storage is up to you, I know some dudes that live comfortably on iPhone 6s with 16gigs ! That's like 2009 times.. You'll always have the downs and ups for something.
This all said, it doesn't mean I wouldn't upgrade for note 5(even though i would switch positions for capacitive buttons) or 6p or some 820 SOC.
Try the moto and figure it for yourself would be the most appropriate for you.

No. 808/418 pushing quad is not the same as a 615/405 at 1080p. You constantly get 20-30fps @2k on intensive 3D on MXP vs 8-15 fps max on Idol 3 @1080P. 3D stuff is just smooth. It is not the same. 615/405 @ 1080p is *somewhat comparable to a 801/330 @2k (testing a g3 proved that even a 801 at 2k is slightly faster than a 615/405 @1080P). Battery is slightly less I get 4 SOT on stock (rooted+all goodies) but that is not even an issue with quickcharge. Phones charges to full in 35 mins. 15 mins I'm up almost 50%. Multitasking is just night and day on a MXP vs Idol 3. In a trip have Pandora running, Waze, BT, then try to do something else... Good luck.

I'm getting 30fps on custom rom with 5h sot so my experience is different, mainly cause of bad optimisation by Alcatel vs cm editions.

I had the Moto X pure. It is a really nice phone. The build quality is definitely better but it does cost twice as much so it should. Although the camera might be a little better I am very happy with the camera on the Idol 3. I really don't have anything bad to say about the Idol 3

True that typically a MXP it's 2 times as much but I've seen several deals for the 32GB version for $300 which is just $100 more for a way better phone. Here is one:

If only us Canadians had access to these offers
The Moto X Pure is not available in Canada by Motorola or any carriers, but there are unlocked 32GB models on Amazon.ca at around $625 CAN. Telus sold me my 16GB Idol 3 for $360 CAN. So here, the Pure is not double the price...
I just got a G4 today. It craps all over the idol......except for the battery. I barley got 2 hours SOT. What a joke.

Hi All,
I bought an Idol 3 4.7 in September 2015. I bought it because I wanted a lightweight and sleek phone; and, it was really light, weighing merely 110g. But it's performance let me down - the stock rom was really, really slow. Luckily, with pivoq's cm 12.1 rom, the phone got a new life. However, watching youtube and reading news was not enjoyable on such a tiny device. I am using the phone during my running because...
In Feb 2016, I did a lot of research and bought a MXS (Moto X Style). Contenders were Nexus 6P, Oneplus 2, LG G4 and Asus Zenfone2. MXS is still the best device in terms of value. Snapdragon 808 is nearly as good as 810. MXS has a microsd and has the best, loudest front facing speakers. The sound from headset is plain awesome - it will completely humiliate Idol3-5.5. MXS rom is nearly plain Android stock with some very nice additions such as chop-chop for flashlight and swirl action to launch camera. It also gets regular updates, but as not as fast as nexuses. I am sure I will get Android N within a month or so.
Compared with 6P, MXS has the same 5.7 inch screen but in smaller footprint and hence is very comfortable to hold. MXP's front facing speakers beats 6P hands down. MXP also has an SD card and most importantly MXP 32 GB is just €360 now, compared to 6P which is €650 now. In half the price, you'll get nearly the same features. It's true that 6P has a better low light camera and a fingerprint sensor, but I don't do too much of low shooting anyways and I have a smartwatch that keeps much device unlocked through trusted connections.
Other tow best value phones are Oneplus 3 and Zenfone 2. I hate Zenfone's software, hence will need rooting and CM13. It is also slower and bigger than MXS with a smaller screen. I was very confused between Oneplus 3, which is even cheaper, and MXS. Finally decided to take MXS due to stock android experience, better cameras and bigger screen.
I strongly recommend MXP over any phablet because of:
1. SD Card
2. Best screen to size ratio
3. Awesome front facing speakers
4. Amazing sound from headphones
5. Near stock Android rom, with regular updates, and very useful additions
6. Good simple and very functional camera app (no manual controls, btw)
7. Best Value (price to performance)
8. Front camera with flash
9. Good battery life, with marshmallow 6.0.1 update, the battery is superb
This was a short write-up of my experience with MXS over the last 3 months. I hope it helps people take a wise decision
Thanks for this lenghty post! Moto X Pure (Style) looks very interesting.
But I started using Greenify a few days ago and since then, my Idol 3 5.5 is less laggy. Because of that, I'll probably hold on to it for a little while but I surely keep the Pure/Style in mind.
On the g4 that is terrible. This is my tipical day with basic optimization and 4 cores always active (factory kernel) I'm half day thru and SOT is more than 2 hours with bad LTE signal!. I always end up with 4 or 4:20 SOT. On an area with good LTE i hit 5 SOT. I can extend that to 5 (in a bad area) lowering cores and clock speed but I don't need it. Like I said, use your car charger for 15 mins and it goes up 50%.

Well, what leaked so far for the upcoming Moto X 2016 with the lack of stereo speakers left me quite cold...
There are some Moto X Style (same as the Pure Edition, but for Europe) on sale at expansys.ca for $440 CAN (or $349 US). It's said to be compatible with the major Canadian carriers for LTE and 3G. It's very tempting to upgrade my Idol 3 with this (my Idol is still sold $360 CAN over here)...
http://www.expansys.ca/motorola-moto-x-style-xt1572-unlocked-32gb-white-284814/
[edit] Looks like it's backordered for 3-4 weeks...
Anyone ever used Expansys?
What about the warranty for an international model sold in North America?
[edit] Expansys-USA provides a 6-month warranty for this, with an additional 12-month that can be purchased for $50 CAN.
Thanks.
