Camera Glass stain - Xperia Z5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi everyone !
Since last week I own a xperia Z5, and I'm fully satisfied of this phone ! No problem encountered excepted yesterday.
I was looking at the back of my Z5 when I saw a little stain on the glass of the camera, I didn't pay attention, I thought it was some kind of dry water stain nothing more, today I look back again and the stain spread a little bit on the glass of the camera ! I decided to wash it with Q-tip and guess what ? The stain spread more ! So I've stopped and I leave my phone like this for the time being. Just to be clear, this not seems to be neither water stuck inside the glass nor a scratch, this only seems to be an uncleanable stain, also the phone keep taking some pretty good photos like there was nothing on the glass. That's just a aesthetic problem.
So I came here to see if someone has the same issue and if you can help me to fix this. I'll put some photos later, thanks everyone !

It's not a stain, it's the UV protection layer of the camera peeling off and using the qtip only made it peel even more. Not that big of a deal, you'll just get more intense reflections if you try to take pictures in bright sunny areas. Can compensate with manually adjusting the exposure and stuff.
If you don't have issues with it just leave it alone, if you get problems with the camera auto focusing or blurry images then you might want to peel it all off with a qtip and some toothpaste.
Some of the services are replacing the back panel under warranty for this issue aswell, might want to check your area and see if that's true for you.

Thanks for your Reply !
As you said it ain't big deal, i can live without it doesn't bother me (i'm not gonna change the back panel or if i do it's only because the problem become bigger) , but now i just want finish what i've accidentally begun and fully remove the UV layer (Blurry images, and Blue tint now and then ) .
Are you sure that the toothpaste will make it ?
Because right now on my camera it looks like a "sugar stain", i don't know how can i describe it , and taking a photo will lead nowhere because we barely see the "stain".
Either way i assume that you know what i'm talking about .
One last question , if i totally remove the UV layer , does my camera will look like before or it will be visible ?
Thanks again for your help

Yes toothpaste will do just fine, just gently rub the glass with a q-tip, rinse and repeat until all the coating is gone. Make sure you don't press too hard, don't want to scratch or break the glass. The camera will look clean afterwards. e.g. no more stained look.
Like I said you'll have brighter reflections on objects afterwards, like the sun reflecting in the water or on a car, but not that big of a deal.
The blue tint is not related to this, it's just due to Z5's software apparently, maybe they fix it on 7.0, fingers crossed.

I've rub a little bit with toothpaste and Q-tip, now the layer take all the camera Glass, guess I need to rub again, my photo are more and more blurry due to the extension of the layer. When we look at the glass on the sun it look like a rainbow and there is still some stain, I'll keep going, hope I'll fully remove the last stain .
Thank you very much

Ok so I come back one last time, I've got removed a lot of stain but some of them remain impossible to remove. The photos are more and more blurry so i've got called my seller, and he says that I can send back my Z5 to him and he'll give a new one for free.
This message is for you who have the same problem than me, if you have the UV layer peeling off, do not try to remove it, it will be worst, either you try to live with or send it back, your warranty will not be used and you'll get a new phone for free (don't know if it's the same everywhere but here in France that's the case).
Thanks for your support and your advices !

[Q] Minor scratches on screen, will toothpaste help?

OK, so today I threw my Incredible (AMOLED if it matters at all) into my backpack and some keys in there scratched it a little bit. The scratches are not too deep, and you can't feel them or anything, so I was hoping there might be a way to fix it. I looked around a little bit and saw that toothpaste can help for getting scratches out of things like CD's and such. Has anyone tried this on their phone? I don't think anything bad would happen, but I don't really know...
Also, I know that I should have bought a screen protector, so please don't remind me about that.
'Getting scratches out' sounds like a bit of a oxymoron. You don't have something IN your screen, a scratch is more like a bit of surface screen missing.
I can't see why toothpaste would harm the screen. Just don't get the phone wet, turn it off, clean up afterwards, etc.
Really can't see how it would help either...
I have never heard of using toothpaste to fix scratches, but since the scratches are not to deep I try this product that has done wonders it is called apple sauce and was originally made to fix iPod scratches. Look it up on amazon.
If this helped please press the thanks button
Yes! It works well, rub it in tiny little circles starting in the center of the screen and working your way out. BUT BE CAREFUL. don't push hard ar all, and don't do the same part more than 2 or 3 little "circles" or you may destroy the screen. if you do it right though, it should work fine.

What do you mean "destroy the screen"? How easily can I accidentally do this? I don't want it to get worse!
They say you can do it on CD's it acts like a polish. I think it all depends on the surface of the screen and what kind of metirial it is made up of.
Good luck though!
Vaseline. lol
Yes, it will probably work since toothpaste is the same as a car polish in general

Mustard works better than toothpaste. It turns into glass when you use it to remove scratches on your phones screen. If you rub it on your face every night before going to bed you'll grow a proper manly beard too. Really, there's no limit to the things you can do with mustard with it's amazing properties.*
*All of the above is patently untrue in the same way that turning lead into gold is pure fiction. Toothpaste contains mild abrasives. Would you use sandpaper on your screen?

Nice! I tried the mustard, and it looks like it worked! My screen looks brand new! Also, I think I can already see stubble after just one night!!! The only problem is now my pillow is stained yellow...
Anyways, I thought that the toothpaste helped because of the slight abrasiveness of it...?
There are products here in the UK made under the Duraglit brand as Brasso and Silvo. These are metal polishes, but are also available as a cotton wad roll impregnated with the stuff. I do not know if they are sold in the USA, but there may be something similar from US manufacturers. As their name suggests they are made to clean and polish brassware and silverware.
It is a very fine abrasive suspension, but it also contains ammonia to remove any tarnish, and white spirit to act as a lubricant. They are quite good at removing scratches from watch glasses etc., by gently cutting into the surface, down to the level of the scratch.
On touch screen devices, the touch screen sensitive layer lives above the screen glass, but under a plastic protective layer. It will be this top layer that you have scratched. The product above or something similar may work, but check that the white spirit does not attack the protective plastic layer.
As mentioned above small, circular movements, a little at a time may work. If you cut through the protective layer, you are in trouble.

Nice to see people getting into the spirit of things Anyway, i hope you find a solution that works. I personally might be tempted to ask the manufacturer to replace the digitizer, as long as the cost wasn't too prohibitive. I tried changing one myself on an old phone and it didn't work out too well
Am not sure about what kind of display cover your phone has. But, if it's capacitive or IR and the top layer is glass, take it to the local wrist-watch merchant/repair center and they could fix it for you using H2SO4 and some filler.
Alternatively, you can have the top layer of the touch panel replaced.
And, next time, do use a screen protector. =D

I am not sure if toothpaste would help the screen scratches, its not a tooth scratch.. LMAO
Is it true that tooth paste works like sand paper on glass, does that mean that it contain something harder than glass? I don't have scratch just want to remove paint between my screen protector. Want to know if tooth paste actually micro scratch the glass.

Dust under my camera lens!?

I rarely take pictures with my sensation but the other day my wife and I were out and I decided to take some pictures when i noticed a dot on the screen. Initially i thought the dust was on the outside of the lense so I simply tried blowing it off, then I tried wiping, then figured out it has to be under the lense. I know for sure its dust because when i zoom in on the camera it looks like a big ass black cotton ball. How do I get this one speck of dust out from under the lens ? I think I can take a duster can to it but is there a way to take the lens off then place it back without any damage?
thanks in advance guys
I have the same problem. Came here hoping there is solution
I've heard some people removing the lense with a tiny screwdriver.
If you look at the top right of the lense, there's a tiny gap where you should be able to remove the uppest lense.
Even though it might sound possible, this operation requires a lot of caution. Personally, I wouldn't recommend doing this as it probably voids your warranty.
Htc should be able to solve this problem for free, as dust shouldn't be able to get inside the camera.

Hi,
I had the same problem exactly, and i have just joined to give you the solution that I used. My HTC photos are sharp and clear as before now.
The solution is very simple ... all what you need is a clean glasses cleaning cloth, glass cleaner (like windex) and tooth paste !! yes tooth paste!
First clean the cover with the glass cleaner ... keep it wet .. apply a tiny portion of tooth paste on it .. rub it with the cloth ... keep it wet all the time.
Repeat till you get the lens back to its original state ... or at least 90 % ... the technique used is similar to the one used in cleaning car head lights .. similar to this video for example:

I hope u find it useful.

The toothpaste trick worked great on my HOX+...
The lens had milions of tiny scratches from clothes i think, as i allways have it in my pocket...
Now it is all clear and fine again...
Just remember to use some time to do this...
- it is not done in 2 minutes...
I used about 15-20 minutes on this...
And the result is great...
Toothpaste works.

Seriously, guys? I tried this and it made everything even worse. I had several scratches on my lens before, now it's all covered in it and photo quality is horrible. Wow, thanks...

By definition, the only way to truly remove a scratch is to sand/polish the area so its level again, essentially removing material to the level of the depth of the scratch (which is what people are attempting to do with toothpaste). Doing so is introducing more scratches, and therefore has a potential to do much more harm than good.

The toothpaste worked great for me, thank you! I've seen the headlight videos (and plan on doing it someday) but never thought about it for my camera lens. It took me about 2 minutes, but I'm sure it varies greatly depending on depth and number of scratches.
As for worries about potential damage, I think it would definitely depend on the condition of the lens and your situation as well. I didn't have deep scratches, or even what I would really call scratches.. more of a "haze" that looked somewhat like old glass, old mirror, or hairspray buildup on a mirror. It almost looked like something I could scrape off, but attempting to certainly would have cause more damage and I'm sure they really were very tiny scratches. I was also prepared to replace the whole lens/cover/etc if it did not work, because although minor, I just couldn't deal with it- every picture was crummy, indoors or out!!
So if you have deep scratches, it may not work, and if you would rather live with (or have no choice but to live with) the current condition of photos than risk having to replace the whole thing it may not be worth it. I am totally pleased though, I am able to take pictures again!
I attached some before and after pics, didn't really plan to so the only apples-to-apples one I have is the indoor one with directions, and I'm not the greatest photographer but I think the difference is pretty obvious. ALL of my pictures were blurry, no defined edges, especially outdoors where every picture came out like I was looking into the sun.
Obviously, I'm pretty dang happy and can't shut up about it lol, so thanks again!! Perfect, easy, and fast solution! And thanks to the OP for posting the thread in the first place!

LIFESAVER!
I got the solution
Finally I got the solution for the problem.
First of all I tried to polish a glass with toothpaste, but scratched it even worse.
It seems Colgate is not fine enough for glass polishing
So I found a replacement part on eBay and purchased it for $4.99
Unfortunately I didn't found replacement instructions, so I tried to disassembly a rear panel. Fortunately I failed, and tried to pick up a rear cap (I attached pictures bellow) and succeeded !!! It was simply glued.
Now I have perfect new glass (I glued a new cap with few drops of Loctite) and I more than happy :victory:

I had exactly same problem as pictured in your photos. Applying a little toothpaste (I use Crest lol) on the lens cover and rubbing with a wet cloth (WETTEX) for a few seconds immediately made the lens shine again, and the result on the camera was indeed spectacular!
Many thanks to the original poster for this really inventive tip!
This totally works. great tip - thanks very much.
Top banana fix! Thank you!

Can't way to try this! Will post later with results!
I tried it, the funniest thing is it works great... Good job on that!
How long did it take you guys to polish it so improvement was visible? 1 minute? 10 minutes?
Also, how much pressure did you apply? And what toothpaste?
Thank you for your answers

Reminded me of rubbing toothpaste on a new dive mask Maybe...
My lens didn't have any deep or severe scratches, but a tiny "layer" of scratches causing the picture to be blurry.
I felt like an idiot rubbing my lens with toothpaste for nearly 20 minutes.
But it worked like a charm! Thank you very much! :good:

Have a HTC One x+. Recently all my pictures I took had this haze on them, making the picture quality worse than a VGA camera. Saw the post, was skeptical after reading a few of the comments, but went ahead. Results were great! In just one round, there was noticeable change in image quality. The haziness was reduced to a minimum. I used 'pepsodent' toothpaste. Not really abrasive but played its role well.
Thanks a ton for the tip!

Screen ruined .. is there hope for me?

Hi,
first of all i will start with saying that I suppose I am not entitled to the official samsung warranty or customer service, as i bought my phone form ebay (unlocked version, shipped from Hong Kong). Unfortunately in my absence my younger brother managed to lightly scratch the screen when he was playing with it, he got scared and tried to get rid of the scratch by rubbing it with toothpaste (it's something he read on the internet, supposedly it was supposed to "polish" the light scratches and get rid of them). Of course it didn't work, and just made it worse. In fact it created a dull, round spot on the screen just where the scratch is, it was hard to clean and attracted moisture easily, moreover when screen was on you could notice a grainy/greasy spot. I guessed, that the toothpaste must've removed the oleophobic coating on the screen, so I thought i will buy a oleohobic coating kit, which i did. I went to Amazon and order the Crystalusion Liquid Glass, praying for it to fix it. After application it restored the hydro/oleophobic properties in that spot, and made it smooth just like the rest of the screen. Unfortunately the grainy/greasy effect while screen is on remained, and under direct light you can still see the dull spot, so i guess apart of removing the coating, he must've sanded the glass underneath it. I am thinking of putting a second layer of that liquid glass thingy, hoping it will fill the sanded pores, and smoothen the glass even more, maybe it will do the trick. It's not something that disturbs the every day usage, but i just cant get over the effect on the screen when its on .. and just the knowledge of not having a perfect, beautiful infinity display just after 3 weeks of having the phone is making me cry. And yes, I know i could use a screen protector .. I've tried those, and none of them suited me, first (samsung original) was not compatible with the case, and next two (wet application) ruined the screen quality (created that mentioned greasy/grainy effect on the entire screen), and after all the TGP reviews I decide just not to waste money on them, so i decided to go naked screen+case ... Do you think there any hope for me? Any ideas on how to fix it, or if it is even possible? Do You think that i can contact Samsung with a device bought on ebay? I will be grateful for any answer, and sorry if this is not the right place for this kind of thread.
Well it won't be covered udner warranty because it's damage caused by you. It's not a faulty product.
But you can maybe have it repaired by Samsung. They can replace the display with a new one. But this is quite expensive.
Putting a screen protector on might help mask the marks on the screen and make them less noticeable.

Anyone tried this Full Body Skin Protectors for OnePlus 6 or any mobile?

https://www.gadgetshieldz.com/oneplus-6-screen-protectors-covers-cases.html
I'm thinking to buy. but don't know how good are these. and also very first time so don't know how good i can apply these.
Good if these can be available offline stores
Hi!
I bought the same set only to have my glass back protected from scratches.
You need to apply them wet with dish soap water. Just take 2 or 3 drops in about 300ml water.
Hard to describe what you have to do, have a look at this video though: https://youtu.be/WzkgRprMopI
I wouldn't purchase it again. Very finicky to install (back and front go easy, sides are horrible to apply) and the overall look of your device will be something like orange peel... Not orange, but with small "dents" everywhere. I even skipped the side stickers because that really is a PITA to get them to the right place. Bottom and top are easy to assemble. But the sides including edges ... it won't stick.
I just installed it, display is a little bit grainy but I think when its dried completely you should not be able to see the grain.
