this is my first time posting because i've never had such a hard time rooting a phone. My moto-x broke recently and i was given a HTC One M8 running marshamallow. i am on verizon. I want to root it to remove the bloat.
i bought the sunshine S-off, but i feel like im running around in circles, i cant adb fastboot TWRP for some reason ... i get a "cannot load" i think there is a conflict between the htc drivers ADB and the 15sec. adb drivers i downloaded.
right now, i am S-off, but thats it...
what are my options? i've read that there aren't many for this phone, but there has to be something i can do....
can anyone link me to the most relavant information for me?
thanks,
J

Here is a link so you can flash twrp
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2717928
After that you can flash supersu to be rooted
Sent from my HTC One M8 using XDA Labs
okay, I got it rooted. took a little work, but i found stuff, and learned. i couldnt get the twrp to load via fastboot/adb...
i found CWM recovery and a specific adb/fastboot uploader. (google clockwork mod recovery htc m8 is how i found it i think)
i installed Htc sync and device drivers, then i erased htc sync leaving the drivers installed.
the CWM recovery that i found (6.xxx) was an actual iso image, not a zip.
i flashed it in adb and it frickin worked!!
i ran it, it asked if i wanted root and i clicked yes,
installed supersu,
no root... binaries no good.
download zip of stable supersu from here.
get it on the SD drive,
install supersu manually from recovery
reboot,
ROOTED!
DUN.
titanium...
F*&(^% you amazon!
etc.
profit.
probably the last HTC i will get, this is too dramatic. (this one was freee)

I have been researching how to root my inspire for the last couple days and finally went ahead and tried it. Here is my problem. I used bubby's (I apologize if i messed up his name) tool and everything seemed to be going great until I got to the part near the end of the video where it says that it will flash the rom with superloader etc. in it. It then just hangs for a while and nothing happens. The phone will now make calls, text but with no sound on my end. It seems to me that I now have a desire HD. Where do i go from here? Thank you in advance.
Download the hack kit and flash the PD98IMG file

download rom manager from market, flash recovery, download a rom, then flash the rom through recovery.
thank you guys for your quick response. I installed Rom Manager but it says that I do not have root. When using the tool I know that it did say my phone had s-off. Is that temporary ?
did you run the rage command from terminal emulator?
i did. It all seemed to work until the point where it says it will flash the cooked rom with busybox, superuser etc. then it just doesn't seem to find it or something. it sits in the fastloader screen with the bootloader option highlighted. how long should that take ?
It can take a while, just to make it easier for you, run the ruu to get back to stock (will still have s-off) then run the rooting process again, you can also try the hack kit as well.
There is a link to the ruu in the guide. You will not have to s-on.
At this point since your rom is downgraded instead of flashing back to stock you could download visionary from the desire hd forum and root that way.
Its up to you.
ok. I downloaded visionary a few minutes ago thinking i may need it. I will try that now. thank you both for the help.

visionary will root your phone, from there you will have to flash a rom via clock work mod recovery, which you can flash with rom manager.
If you need help flashing a rom check out my guide that is stickied.
will do. hope it works.
i got one more question. Is there a way to install superuser? when i try to go into ROM manager it says "you must ROOT your phone for ROM manager to function superuser was not found"

down load this pd98img, place it on your sd card, boot into hboot and flash via the boot loader.
using that file you linked to worked! I think the one I had was corrupted or something.(I don't even know what that means) . thanks again man! I know to you it was probably nothing, but you just saved me a ton of headache. I was freaking out ! I'm gonna live in these forums for the next few weeks. Android is the fuzzy neagle!
My inspire is on the loop of android screen at the startup when i restarted my phone after doing the factory reset.
any idea what shud i do???
I screwed up my phone, I rooted it and was uninstalling some bloatware that came with it (sound hound, check-in app etc) but I deleted something important and for some reason I my internet browser was uninstalled and I cannot install CWM (will clarify below). Before my brower was uninstalled I was unable to install any more apps (things from the Market would download, but never install), so I tried a factory reset (being stupid since I uninstalled so much from the stock ROM) and then my browser was gone.
Being a total moron I did not back anything up, so I thought I could install CWM to just reflash the stock ROM. I rooted my phone successfully (following htc dev) but could not install CWM, after flashing the .img file and rebooting it just reboots as normal and shows no evidence of CWM being installed.
My phone is a Rogers HTC One X and I've been making sure to find the guides for Rogers/AT&T HTC's, but I'm still failing .
Use ADB to push the missing apps to the phone?
But it sounds like you want to restore the phone to the state it was before you removed apps?
If so, first step is to get a working recovery. Can you get Rom Manager on your phone? If so, you could flash CM from there.
If not, find a thread on flashing recovery. I have not yet rooted mine so can't be more specific.
And you do know how to get into recovery by holding volume down and power etc? Sorry if I underestimate your experience but sometimes people miss basic stuff.

Whatever you do, don't flash an HTC official RUU (rom) over all of this.... The only hard bricks you read about are caused by people flashing manufacturers' roms after rooting.
Edit: I see from comments below it appears that some people think I was being sarcastic in making this post: however, see this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=22897771
I have seen a number of other warnings over the years of inexperienced users who try to get out of trouble by simply applying manufacturers' updates or factory images to an unlocked phone with a custom recovery and make things much worse.
Sent from my EPAD using Tapatalk 2
How do I use ABD to push missing apps back? Don't worry about underestimating my knowledge at all, this is my first android phone.
I googled how to install custom ROMs and CWM and TWRP came up, I tried both and neither installed. I unrooted my phone successfully and started phone in fastboot, flashed the .img files and then restarted but nothing new was installed.

So what do you guys suggest I do? Should I just bring it back to the store? I got it like four days ago. How do I unroot it? I can't access the market (no brower or market app) so I can't get SU to unroot.
to get back to factory you can do the following
relock the bootloader.
reboot to bootloader and use the command fastboot oem lock
after that install the 1.85 RUU from here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1670238
it will take longer than the 10 minutes it says it will take so don't worry.
after that you can unlock again with that same token you used to unlock in the first place.
I'm at work right now so I can't do that yet
If I bring it in without doing that stuff will they know or even care? I have some BS story made up D). Also mine is a Rogers, but the AT&T stuff works with it right?
I appreciate your quick responses
Rogers phone would need rogers ruu loaded
ATM I still have the Rogers RUU, just broken XD
Would it be enough to just lock the blootloader again before returning it to the store?

why do you want to return it? For this problem or is there something else?
Yes it is for this problem (and all the ones in the first post) I tried for several hours last night to fix it, but couldn't.
I followed the guides for how to install CWM and TWRP to the word and they would not install. If I cannot install them, I cannot reflash stock RUU right?
I still want the HTC One X... just one I didn't screw up XD.
This will put you back to stock and you won't need to return anything

Correct.
Thanks for your help, that last guide you linked solved it. The first time I looked at it I misread "lock" for "unlock", but I got it to work now . Thanks for your patience and help gunny.
No problem. I'm glad you got it sorted.
I just got my rogers one x and, I'm fairly disappointed in the storage capacity. What advantages would I gain from routing a phone that is already as fast and responsive as it is?

Hey all, so last night when I was trying to flash a new ROM onto my phone, I wanted to make sure I deleted everything off my previous ROM so I went into TWRP and basically went on a deleting frenzy. I wiped basically everything from system, os, to cache. Lets just say my thought process wasn't so smart. So now im stuck in hboot. I pmed Scrosler yesterday and he basically told me to RUU back. SO now for the last 5 hours I've been trying to look up how to do that. I downloaded a 1.85 Evita cingular RUU thingy, and tried using fastboot. Now I've run into another problem, my computer can't recognize my usb. Ive tried two different usb plugs of mine. I tried uninstalling HTC sync so that it could uninstall drivers and such, and then reinstall but to my avail that has not worked. So I can't even fastboot. So now I'm stuck and Ive looked on other peoples threads and such and can't figure this out. Yes I know I'm a noob. I SUCK. So if anyone could please help me out. Im rooted and unlocked bootloader. I get stuck in bootloop obviously because I dont have a OS. I can access Hboot and fastboot.
Thanks alot for anyone that could help me in this great time of need.
EDIT: I solved the problem. I just used my fathers computer which recognized my usb and RUU'd to 1.85 then unlocked bootloader etc. thanks for the help guys

You should manually install the drivers and turn off HTC sync manager. That may be your problem. I would uninstall it.

Yep, getting same error still, USB device not recognized.
Try mounting the storage in TWRP, PC should recognize the 'removable disk' and you can put a zip onto it and flash the rom that way.
This way worked for me when I did the exact same thing. I thought I was screwed; now I'm running TN SE 2.2, highly recommended.

I tried doing this last time, but my PC isnt recognizing my device. It says USB device not recognized. This is the major issue I am plagued with otherwise I would do as you said.'''
EDIT: Ok so I was able to get it recognized on my dads laptop, he is running Windows Vista. So now when I go onto my computer and mount cache, (cant mount sd card through twrp because it says E:failed to mount /sdcard(invalid argument)AND UNABLE TO MOUNT SDCARDWHEN TRYING TO READ SETTINGS FILE) oops caps), it says I have to format it. I right clicked and tried to open as portable device and that works but I can't drag my ROM in there.
Someone can correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't this because the new HBoot is stopping the 1.85 RUU? Wouldn't you have to 2.2 RUU?

But assuming you were unlocked before, getting it back is just a matter of flashing a custom recovery and superuser.
Just picked up a 1 week old used AT&T One X. Previous owner had rooted, and the phone indeed shows "Tampered" and "Locked" when you boot into bootloader. I confirmed root by using Titanium Backup, and in there it showed "root access: OK (BusyBox 1.18-4-Titanium from app)", so I assume I'm all good there.
So I moved onto the unlock tutorial. The one found here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1672284 I did the following:
1. Downloaded the Spoof-CID file. Unzipped and did not find the file referenced in the tutorial, which is "unlock-bootloader.bat", but assumed that must reference an older zip, and assumed the new file to use is "Spoof-CID.bat"
2. Updated the HTC drivers for the phone so it shows as "My HTC" under Android USB Devices in the device manager when plugged in and in USB debugging mode
3. Ensured USB debugging mode and Charge Only mode on phone are enabled
4. I opened task manager and shut down ADB and HTC manager if I found them running
4. Ran "Spoof-CID.bat" as admin (Win 7 pro x64) and got the red CMD prompt screen open and accepted the first two warnings.
5. This is where it failed - it gave me the following message
"Restarting ADB
Pulling Files
Checking Files
Couldn't pull files from device. Your device was not altered.
Press any key to continue..."
I've tried this on my laptop as well (also running Win 7 pro x64), and still no joy - exactly the same problem.
I did a factory reset, reinstalled superuser and SuperSU, and tried this again from scratch, and still it gave me the same error. I found one other thread that mentioned this same problem after searching, but there was no resolution given.
I'm kind of at my wits end here. I find the stock rom slow, buggy, incredibly bloated, and locked down after recently switching from a Galaxy Nexus with custom Jelly Bean rom on it. If I can't somehow unlock this thing and start putting custom roms on it, I think I might have to put it up for sale.
Any suggestions?

Taking a shot in the dark here because it's been forever since I unlocked, but try updating the SU binary in the SuperSu app.
edit: You only need SuperSU, delete SuperUser. Not sure but that could cause issues. Not necessarily with this but with other things.
Another suggestion would be to try the manual method so you can see step by step what's going on.

Thanks to all you guys for the tips. Maybe if I really can't find the solution I'll give one of these manual methods a try, though they look a little daunting and I'd be concerned about getting stuck with an unusable phone.
Is there a good reason to go with one over the other? I don't know what spoofing the partition is.
I followed your advice and tried the manual method. Turns out the problem was that the CID has already been changed to 11111111 or whatever. Makes me wonder if the previous owner did this or could it have possibly come that way from AT&T?
Either way, successfully got through the rest of the steps on HTCDev, and I'm good to go! Thanks again for the help!
Lol well that explains it. Glad it all worked out for you

Just tried AIO. Finally unlocked the bootloader! Now im confused on what to do lol..
if you have root then all that's left is to boot up into recovery (volume down and power then select recovery from the bootloader) and flash a custom rom .zip file from your sd card. just be sure to follow all the installation steps for your selected rom (i recommened AOKP Jelly Bean, check my signature for the link if you like) and always ALWAYS wipe data/cache before installing a new rom. and happy flashing

First things first you need to boot into recovery (I use Goo Manager for this; Im lazy like that. It will also install the TWRP recovery.) and make a backup of the stock ROM your running now and keep a copy on your PC. Some times the contents of the SD Card can be corrupted. If any thing goes wrong your going to need something to go back to.
Then depending on your needs (AOSP/Sence) location in the world (EU/US) and what kind of One S (S3/S4) you have; you want to pick a ROM that's suits your needs.
I would stay away from Viper for now at least till your more secure with flashing, there are some extra steps like flashing a different boot.img; which can soft brick your phone or worse.
Start with something like Axiom S, for all your Sence needs. Or CodefireX CM10 for AOSP. If you use TWRP for your recovery you won't have to fast boot flash the boot.IMG for the ROM you chose. But again this depends on the ROM you choose to use, some ROMs don't play well with TWRP.
But most of all read. And then read some more. And when you think you know what your doing read a little more. This device seems to be real finicky. What works on one might not work on a another.
Good luck, be safe and welcome to the One S Forums!
