Rooting an unknow device - General Questions and Answers

Hello and Welcome,
I was looking as hell for a solution to my problem on the internet.
I have been fighting with this for a month now.
Some months ago I have bought a china camera. I have started to have some problem with it, so I decided to check what is inside. I have found some Xynos(samsung chip).
It have custom system running on it.
I realize that it has an android(4.0.3) on it running an app(which act as a OS) which is responsible for full device.
I decided to connect USB keyboard to it and I manage to exit(! haha) this app and go to normal android device launcher.
In the next step I wanted to run ADB. I did not have any drivers, so I tried to change pid of universal USB driver and it worked(!).
The problem that I am facing now, is that I cannot enable USB debugging to run ADB. When I go to developer options and enable USB Debugging go back and again enter it is disabled.
So they somehow secure this. Is there a way to "hack" this? I tried to get to fastboot by pressing all hardware buttons but no luck.
I have also Extracted this app as a *.apk but there is nothing that I can do with it. I tried to install it on another device, but it says that "App was not installed", maybe because of android version(I tried on 4.4.2).
Best Regards,
Patryk

U want to root it?
Sent from my GT-S5830i using XDA Free mobile app

Basicly yes because without it you can do nothing. A least get ADB to work.

Try with kingo root its an universal rooting app works with almost every device
Sent from my GT-S5830i using XDA Free mobile app

Thank you very much, I didn't know that it is possible to root the device from app level
I have another problem to solve, maybe someone can also help me with it.
This main app which acts as a OS require some custom SD card to be placed in the device.
If it is not there device won't let me use most of it functions.
Is it possible to somehow "hack" this solution?
Reversing APK will help?

Yup some devices are behave like that! Same like my phone gt s5830i
My phone memory divided into two partitons 1.system 2.internal storage
System storage(200MB) contains OS files and you cant use it for personal usage like downloads,pictures etc.
And the internal storage(200mb) is reserved only for app installations!
So if i dont put sd card i cant take pics or record a video or voice,i cant able to download anything or save anything!
I mean i cant do any media things or saving things!
And there is no way to solve it!
I think ur problem is same
Give a Thanks if i helped you!

For now I have almost solve my full problem and it is not connected with SD card memory. My SD card slot acts as a kinda security and SD card by it self is some kind of a chip. Without this chip device simply won't work.
I was able to reverse main system app on my device by apktool and see some java using Dex2Jar + JD GUI.
Now I am trying to find some code responsible for this action and will try to "fix" that in smali files, build again and install till I die

Awesome! How are you liking the Liquid? Is it good enough for daily use (browsing, using some basic apps, a little 3D gaming maybe)? Thanks!
I really Love the screen. 4.3 inch is just perfect (920x540 resolution). . And 1 GB Ram is enough for multitasking, for me atleast. Here a some screenshots of benchmarks i just made. With a lot of apps running in background. (550 MB Ram free) . This phone is really amazing (compared to a galaxy s plus) . The only thing you may not like, that it has no front-facing camera. But you may like the fact that it boots within 7 seconds .
I hope I answered your questions, and feel free to ask something you want to know.
Btw, I'm from Holland, and I bought this phone unlocked for €180,-

Are you seriously saying the (dual-core) Galaxy Nexus S is SLOWER than the (much cheaper single-core) E350? Damn makes me want the phone even more!
And yeah I noticed, I'm from Belgium and thinking of buying this phone (also carrier unlocked) for €199.

You recommend ROM Toolbox. I am interested with its capability of doing nandroid backup. But as far as I know, there is no custom recovery yet for the phone, so even with ROM Toolbox, there is no way to have nandroid backuping the whole system+user+recovery data. Could you confirm ?
The default Android recovery backups only user data, so it is not a really fail-safe for a rooted phone (for example, system application deleted by error).
2) During a phone call, by pressing menu button, there is possibility to record the call. Once recorded, I do not known where the recorded file is stored. My search inside /mnt/sdcard does not show anything. Do you know where this file is located?
Thank you.

1. The Rom manager in Rom toolbox doesn't work. I confirm that. I was working on a CWM recovery, but i don't have enough time and knowledge. So when I get time, I'm going to try to compile one.
2. I didn't even know there was a recording option while calling. will research that and inform you when i know more.
Thanks for the tip ^_^
Hi! Thanks for the tutorial, it will most certainly will be very helpful to get all advantages from my android device..
However, I am facing a terrible problem that I don't know how to solve.. I cannot connect my acer to any computer! When I connect the usb cable, there's no messages popping up, it just charges the smartphone..
I have tried with 2 different cables and in 2 different computers, so any suggestions about how I should proceed? The mobile phone has less than a month and never fell down, so I think it's very unlikely that it is broken.. moreover, the first time I turned it on, when arrived, I was able to connect it to the computer as a "hard drive"..
Please help me rooting my phone, guys!

Excellent news: the record file is created at /mnt/sdcard2/PhoneRecord directory.
The file name is of type YYYY-MM-DD_hh.mm.ss-xxxxx.3gpp.
Nice to see it's rooted. I was actually thinking on buying this phone, but one thing holds me back: do you think there will ever be a CM or MIUI rom for this device? I doubt because I imagine the custom dual-sim managment part of the phone software would be difficult to port... but maybe I'm wrong.
Hello,
Currently there is no custom recovery to perform nandroid backup. The default recovery backups/restores only
user data so it is not complete. In the meanwhile maybe 'dd' command could be used for manual backup the different
partitions. 'dd' could be invoked from a zip (script) inside the default recover.
But we need the mapping of different partitions.
From the Liquid Gallant 'ls -l command':
[email protected] -> /dev/block/mmcblk0p6
[email protected] -> /dev/block/mmcblk0p2
[email protected] -> /dev/block/mmcblk0p1
[email protected] -> /dev/block/mmcblk0p4
[email protected]_ro -> /dev/block/mmcblk0p5
[email protected] -> /dev/block/mmcblk0p3
Usually a custom recovery backups recovery, boot, system, data, cache (and /sdcard/.android_secure).
Question: How are they mapped with the Gallant partitions?
recovery <-> ?
boot <-> ?
system <-> android?
data <-> usrdata?
cache <-> cache?
And what is :
fat ? need to be backuped?
sec_ro ? need to be backuped?
Thank you for any idea or answer.
Thanks for posting this! Worked great! So far i haven't been able to find a tool to undervolt the CPU did u manage to find one? Seems like all those CPU control apps dont play nice with the mt6575 CPU...

If i have enough time, i will defenitely make a cwm and CM, but i have absolutely no experience, so i will have to learn it first.
the dual sim management part shouldn't be too hard to port. But now i'm going to install ubuntu etc, and trying to figure out how to compile CWMR

from what i know so far:
ebr1 = recovery
fat = sdcard (internal i think)
and sec_ro = android_secure or boot...
not sure.

[How to] Moving Apps to SD Card

***UPDATE***
As of update MF5 and higher, this feature is now part of Samsung's software (YAY! )
To move apps to SD, simply Go to:
1] Settings
2] More
3] Application Manager
4] Select your app from the list
5] Select the "Move to SD card" option
For those of you on older firmwares or wanting a slightly more powerful tool, read on!
Hi Everyone,
I'm posting this here hoping to save others some trouble of finding how to move Apps to SD Card. Officially it's not supported, but there's already a few methods of doing so. First, some warnings:
Rooting: Currently there is no recoveries for the Galaxy S4, so if rooting somehow goes wrong, you've got an expensive paperweight.
Apps to SD Card: SD Card memory is more vulnerable than the internal memory, so there's always a risk of data loss on them. Keep anything you can't afford to lose in the internal memory!
Step 1: Prepare your phone for rooting:
First up you need to Root your Galaxy S4. To do this:
[On your Phone]
- Go to Settings --> More Tab --> About Device
- Tap "Build number" multiple times - I think after 9 it enables "Developer Options"
- Go back to the "More" menu, and open the new developer options tab
- Enable "USB Debugging"
- Plug your phone into your computer via USB
[On your Computer (Windows only instructions)]
- Download the Galaxy S Drivers from HERE and save them somewhere handy (IE: Desktop)
- Right click "Computer/My Computer", go to properties, and open your device manager
- You should see your galaxy in there somewhere (Possibly under "other"). Right click this, go to "update driver software", and browse for drivers. Select the S Driver folder mentioned above and hit next, and it should update/install itself.
View attachment 1935015
Step 2: Root your phone:
For versions before MDN/MDM - thunderserpent's guide should do the trick: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2266336
For versions ending in MDN/MDM - djembey's guide should work great: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2255190
For older versions (stock without an OTA Update), use the below method:
[On your Computer (Windows only instructions)]
- Once installed, download the Motochopper software HERE to root the phone
- Double click the motochopper "run.bat" in the folder, and follow the instructions onscreen.
Step 3: Install and use FolderMount:
[On your Phone]
- Once rooted, download foldermount HERE
- Once installed, open FolderMount and grant superuser access when asked.
- In FolderMount, you have the options to:
View attachment 1935014
:: Name your folder (IE: "Generic Game 1")
:: Select the "Source" Folder (the one on your local storage)
:: Select the "Destination" Folder (the one on your SD Card)
When you enter these details, it will then move them to your SD Card!
Personally I paid the £1.40 for the FolderMount Pro, because it also shows you filesizes when browsing - and it's finally made my S4 useful!
I know it's not the easiest process ever, but hopefully I've explained it enough to get people started. I have a 32GB external and the measly 8.8 internal I was left with was useless. Now I can move apps to the external card to save space internally!
Common Locations of Large Files:
Two common locations for games (IE: Gameloft games, EA Games, etc.)
Android/data
Android/obb
Potential Downfalls:
- Loading times may increase from the external memory
- Updates may cause problems, although testing so far shows it doesn't have any problems
- You may need to re-mount after reboot, the mount on boot option may not always work
If you get prompted to redownload a game/update that you already have - check in FolderMount that it has been mounted okay
Disclaimer: These instructions are purely to try and help people - I don't own, maintain, or affiliate with any of the downloads. Use at your own risk!

Samsung's response to the lack of built in memory is an SD Card, yet they don't officially support this - so after a bit of looking around I managed to get it working. Figured if it helps even one or two people out, yay
Please note you will probably have to reinstall the apps when updates for the app are available in the market.
Not too mention Samsung's response was misleading and stupid, since misleads customers thinking it fixes the app storage.

So far, I'm not entirely sure. They seem to have different locations:
Android/data
Android/obb
Are a huge chunk (6.6GB on mine - mainly games - Gameloft etc.)
The rest are in 100s of MB at most, so those seem to be the main places. If you get the 'paid' version of the FolderMount app, it shows you the folder sizes in the app which helps a lot
As for updates/reinstalling, this may indeed be true. I haven't had a chance to test/play with this unfortunately! If I get an update anywhere, I'll update this!
Edit: I deleted one of my folders from NFS MW and it redownloaded to the SD Card which was handy - however I don't know how google play will work with updates, whether it does a "smarter" check or not.
I can't find most of my apps. There's a few in Android/data. . But idk where the rest are at. Nothing in obb

As an update, I just updated an app through Play and it looks to have updated without a problem to the SD Card - I can't really poke around much to tell, but it launched and looks fine to me, and looks to still be mounted on the SD Card

Thanks for confirming that - from the description of FolderMount it sounds like the phone should be unaware of it being external, so I was hoping there wouldn't be a problem

Seems to me that it's basically created a symbolic link pointing to the external SD card. Android shouldn't know the difference. That's just a guess tho, as I'm new to this Android malarkey
I had an update today for Iron Man 3, which is on my external card. It updated fine through Google Play, and when I launched it it just went "Verifying Files" then launched - no issues
The only problem I've found so far is with the gallery and hidden folders. I went into the gallery and hid a folder - a few times I couldn't get the option to show hidden folders. I rebooted, and can no longer either hide or show hidden folders - which is strange. The option is entirely missing now...may be unrelated, but not entirely sure.

So as im new to Android guys with this method you can download,install and run/play apps/games straight from a micro sd card thus freeing up the internal storage ?
Wow, I'm using it on S3, and it works much better than Directory Bind, than never did work on my S3 (I don't know why)!!!
Thkx a lot for this!!! Now I finally can have all my big games installed!!!

Sorry for the delayed response - yep, that's exactly what it does. Again it has some negatives as the external is a bit slower to load and has a higher chance of failure, but I know I certainly had no room internally - this allows me to use the 32GB External for games, apps, etc.
Link2SD
Hi all,
I installed Link2SD from market. Working nicely, also with updates and new apps.
Does this this foldermount option do the same, or is it more efficient?
Seems to do the same thing. No problems so far.

FolderMount allows you a choice in moving your large app data and obb folders and even media like the whatsapp photos folder to the external SD.
It's more flexible in what you can do.

[Q] Samsung Galaxy S Relay SD Card

Hello Everyone!
I've bought my new Samsung Galaxy S Relay yesterday, so i'm typing from my new QWERTY keyboard. I decided that i'll need some external space for my phone and bought a 16GB San Disk SD card. On my old Samsung Galaxy Mini there was a function in App Manager to "Move to SD" but here there's no such function. So how can i move them to SD. I've checked in the internet and i found that people were usually complaining about the phone not allowing them to move and the solution was to root the phone, but here i don't even have that function. Please, can someone help me to move my apps to my SD? All the answers are appreciated....
I also read in the internet that your android device automatically installs games on SD if it sees that you are running out of memory.If that's right please tell me cause i didn't fully load my phone memory.
My android version is 4.1.2(i guess that"s JellyBean)
P.S.:I know that the rooting could be the answer,but i am really against it because i bricked one of my phones by rooting so i don't want that to happen.

Look up FolderMount in the Play Store. That's the best solution for your issues.
As for the risks of rooting: nothing ventured, nothing gained.

Thanks for your respond dear orange808. I tried the FolderMount app and it requires root. So i guess the only thing i could do is rooting, but i still don't want to root my phone so i'll deal with my 5 GB internal storage...Thanks anyway, this could be useful for others
OK guys i decided to root my phone cause i can't just sit and stay calm knowing that i could be playing Asphalt8 or Real Racing3(maybe). So after rooting(i didnt root it yet) what apps should i use to move my apps or will "Move to SD" function be available after rooting?
Ok, so i see nobody wants to help, so i did all by myself. I succesfully rooted my phone then downloaded the app called root external 2 internal sd.So everything is fine now, i have a lot of memory. Also Titanium Backup is a good app to delete some crap on the phone(I'm sure most of you are familliar with this app, but just in case somebody doesnt know). So I hope this was useful.
I can help you

I can help, since I was sorta reluctant like you. Here are a few things you could do:
1) Link2SD is proven to work-it does on my SGH-T699. But you need not only root access, but a second partition on your extSDcard. By the way, the "Move to SD" command does not exist in the Relay's hardware or software. But with Link2SD, you can create symbolic links instead via the second partition. That can be done by using Mini Tool Partition wizard (free but some functions are limited)
2)You need a microSD full size adapter.
3)A media reader, internal or USB will do.
For root:
You need Odin. Odin allows you to flash recoveries (Like CWM- the latest version for apexqtmo is 6.0.3.8) and entire ROMs. Search around XDA and I'm sure you will find the links required to do all this. This is my second post, so I'm unfamiliar with citing other threads.
If you need more help, I'll be happy to.

I use foldermount and have no issues with Real Racing 3 and other huge games, it works nicely.
Link2SD does something similar, but does FolderMount require root access? The Relay does not support native Apps2SD, so since Link2SD worked so well for me, I suggested it. Good suggestion, though.
Maybe I was too long winded.

Thanks for answering and good advices. I find the "Root External 2 Internal" app great too, you just have to learn how to use it(you can google it and im sure you will find the instructions).
I dont know much about android working stuff, so the rooting for me was a big risk and i dont think if theres any risk of bricking my phone whileflashing recoveries i would prefer not to do that.
I wish everyone Merry Christmas, Happy New Year and Great Holidays!!!

By the way about Real Racing 3. The game works and plays perfect on my phone, but the stupid Google Play says its incompatible(i hope i spelled it right) with my phone. So i went to download it from other sources. Its not just the RR3, the GTA SA works perfectly, GTA VC, GTA 3, and there are a lot more games i dont remember, anyways, the question is if theres any app that can change it by root access(make it compatible) or something like that?
Thanks in advance.
Have you tried forcing a link via Titanium Backup? If you enjoy tinkering with apps at that level, then I would even buy the $5.99 USD key. This unlocks more features to come. This app (and its key) is available via Google Play. Search "titanium backup" and those will be the top two results.
Good luck.

Yeah... I dunno why. I installed RR3 from play on my Xperia Pro, then backed up the apk, and then moved to the Glide, and now to the Relay and I have the same question. Why the hell is it "not compatible"?

I guess the phone is too old for them to care about it. But i found an app called BLACKMART ALPHA which a) allows you to download paid apps for free(not all apps from play store are included but most of them are) b)doesnt care if your phone is compatible or not with the app (Like it allows me to download rr3 or gta sa) c)if theres an update in the playstore it appears in it so you can easy update apps from there.
I couldnt find the app from google play (maybe because i wasnt looking for it carefully) but you can easily find it by google search.
Hope this will work for everyone.

If you're partitioning your SDCard in this instance, can you partition it evenly? Like say if you have a 64GB SDCard, and partition it into two 32GB isolated sectors? I know the Relay can only see up to 32GB (there's a thread that tells you ways around it, though), but in this instance, would it see two 32GB sectors? Or, would you have to take a regular 32GB SDcard and divide it into two 16GB sectors?
You can determine the size yourself. It entirely depends on how much you want to allocate. If you've followed the instructions quoted, any size is possible. Just leave enough for your other needs that aren't related to link2sd. If my advice helps you and others hit "thanks" please. Good luck, I'll keep checking in periodically.

The relay supports 64 GB SD Cards. Works fine with mine formated to ext4. I've filled it to capacity several times.
I know. I was just saying that he can put aside any of that 64 GB for use with apps2sd symbolic links.
EpicMike, I'd be interested as to how you fare in this process. It would educate me for sure. I currently use Link2SD for my symbolic links, but every ROM update temporarily disconnects these links. They are easily re-established by recreating the mount scripts within the app. Just thought you should know.

I know i might get out of topic in this but anyways. Ive just accidentally uninstalled my CLOCK(that sounds too stupid,so iam stupid i guess). so could anyone back it up and send me the .apk file to [email protected] ...or if theres a function to attach it here(im not sure about it) pllease do so, cause i really need it.
Thanks everyone in advance.
There is a clock package elsewhere on xda. Just Google 'ported clock package jb' and click the first xda link visible. It should look like [PORT] at the beginning of the link. Follow all instructions and warnings on the thread. Click the correct links for your OS version, then you could use your recovery to flash the zip file. Or you could go to the play store and check out the clocks there. Should've said THAT first.
Good luck.

[Stock ROM] CAT B15Q ROM development

CAT has not yet managed to put official stock images or the kernel source code available - even for their oldest phones (even though they are required to)... so here's at least a beginning.
Every firmware archive contains the four partitions UBOOT, BOOTIMG, RECOVERY and ANDROID (/system). These are flashable using spFlashTool, a howto is here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/android/help/howto-firmware-flashing-cat-b15q-t2989627.
Please note that these firmware files were dumped from an EMEA B15Q, dual-sim - there are reports of other models being available under the B15Q model name. In doubt, always make a full backup using spFlashTool's readback mode before flashing one of these. (You should be doing these anyway before every firmware upgrade, CAT doesn't test stuff like compatibility with root!)
Credits for the scatter file go to bigal1337. Credits for spFlashTool and the driver package go to Russian website mtk2000.ucoz.ru.

Tested tools:
MTK Driver package: http://mtk2000.ucoz.ru/down12/MTKUsbAll_0.9.2.rar
spFlashTool: http://mtk2000.ucoz.ru/down12/SP_Flash_Tool_exe_windows_v5.1420.00.rar
Do note that the drivers appear to be modified Google drivers and thus have no digital signature; you will need a 32-bit system to use them.
Flash mode needed for spFlashTool is achieved by removing the battery, starting the flash/readback in spFlashTool and then plugging in the USB cable. You may put in the battery afterwards.
The recovery, fastboot and factory test methods are entered by shutting down the phone and then:
recovery mode: press power + volup for 2 seconds, then release power, release volup as soon as recovery has booted
fastboot mode: press power + center for 2 seconds, then release power, release volup as soon as recovery has booted
test mode: press power + voldn for 2 seconds, then release power, release volup as soon as recovery has booted
In case that a B15Q or general CAT board is opened (for the B15, B15Q and the flagship S50), I request that this thread is moved into its rightful place. And in case anyone wants to help me with a CyanogenMod port, please PM me.
CWM Recovery
Using mtkdroidtools, I have built a CWM Recovery image to be flashed with spflashtool, all based on 1.022 firmware. There are two variants:
using stock Mediatek USB IDs: https://mega.co.nz/#!FRxxiRSC!EN5gORcYPtFONlH3V8-Yco3_w9RGhE8jevicedlT2kI
using Samsung USB IDs: https://mega.co.nz/#!8MowBZCJ!fhs-mXpGZR36g9JJh3IONIlOKBHIktFBDIrpynlK84M
The difference between them is that recovery #1 uses the same Mediatek USB id's as the stock image (and thus requires the Mediatek drivers in Windows, which sucks because these are not signed), and recovery #2 uses the USB IDs from a Samsung tablet - so you need the Samsung ADB driver instead, which is digitally signed and far more stable than the Mediatek.
Samsung USB ID fix
See above for the reason; the boot.img with Samsung USB IDs is at:
1.022: https://mega.co.nz/#!gcREQJKD!FCrxl9-PWSWM0_2Nh9D1KeA-zFV4nS9dmd6zjVnqPLc
Hybrid SD Card
And the CWM Recovery + boot.img for those who want to try out the "hybrid SD card" from http://forum.xda-developers.com/android/help/howto-external-sd-card-internal-storage-t2989650, the two images of 1.022 are here:

With or without the SD hack? Try putting the SD card into a Windows machine, chkdsk the fat32 partition. Then plug it into a linux machine and run e2fsck on the data partition.

I tried the sd hack. There was a problem with my sd card partitions... but i reformated it with partition magic and now it works like a charm. No lag or anything.
Better than i was thinking
Greatings!
after one week
OKAY,
after one week of usage my phone became laggy and unstable.
Maybe this is because of my sd card but.... its 10class, i dont know
So i reflashed with the original partitions and now its fast and stable
Custom Rom
Will there be any possibility to create a Lollipop rom for this device?

Do someone have the problem with the proximity seonsor that i have? There is a screen turning on immediately after turning of when the phone is placed next to my head when i am calling. This leads to a lot of changes in settings and everything that my face is changed durring the phone call.
I tried a lot of apps from play store that "fix" the problem but... they work not on 100% proper.
The sensor is working at 100% i have checked it already.

I had the same problem. CAT support told me to reset the phone to factory. I tried a lot of other things but only the factory reset helped me. My sensor was also working correctly, I also tried several Apps to chack this.
Give it a try. I know it's a lot of work, but it was (in my case) worth it. I changed the time an date settings with my face which lead to missed alarms and oversleeping

CAT B15 help
Hi guys, i'm sorry i have to ask this in this forum but i've been asking for a couple of months now, and got no answer. I have a CAT B15 (not the B15Q). It is single sim version (IMEI write on the back) and i managed to do plenty of things in it. I swapped memory and worked fine, and even i installed a Dual Sim android rom and i managed to use the secondary Sim bay in it (that was tapped with a plastic fake sim) and used the phone with 2 sims for like 2 weeks. Then i started to play with deodex and build.prop and softbricked the phone, but it was piece of cake since it is easy to unbrick. The problem was that i wrongly flashed the phone with scatter file, and flashed all partitions in it, EBR1, MBR, UBOOT, etc, etc. The result was a non-working dual SIM phone. Everything works, but the SIMS, it does not detect any SIMs in it, in any of the SIM bays, and the IMEIs are wrong numbered. I did no buckup of the phone so i'm pretty screwed. I've been asking for someone to upload the EMEA_SS or US_SS ROM for the CAT B15, but nobody responded. I thaught maybe the CAT B15Q has a similar software/bands flashing partitions, but that i leave to you for answer. Anyway, if any of you has the possibility of taking the images of a single sim CAT B15 it would save me this awesome phone for me. I'm also willing to give a 20GB account of ownCloud server for 1-year free of charge if storage space is needed, no problem. This are the links i've been searching and asking.

Lenovo S856 stock rom and fix bootloop / stuck

Hi everyone,
I just want to share about this Lenovo S856 LTE rom. Yesterday, I have accidentally uninstall 1 system app which is I do not know if it will make this device bricked and it is IDEA.apk and some themes app. Before that, I have also root this device using kingroot and all work fine as it should. Spent all night trying to find best solution as the device won't booting and just stuck at bootanimation and ended with blackscreen. Since this is my first time using this model, I also don't know it's quiet complicated to flash new ROM with QPST softwares.
But thanks to whoever who compiled this Lenovo s856 rom into 1 flashable file ( QSB file ). It's huge than normal ROM I ever found, it was 1.5 GB and I did successfully recover my device after several attempt and findings.
Firstly, download ROM - I can't include ext links here as I'm still new :angel:, you can find the rom Lenovo_S856_ROW_S138_141113 from google drive. Using IDM would be great to download this 1.1GB zip file.
2. Enter recovery mode by pressing Vol + and Vol - together and press Power button and reset device to its factory. ( format data/cache)
3. Reboot again and now enter Service Mode by pressing Vol - and Power button. There is 13 options available and selecting them using volume button and power button is for OK.
4. Choose number 5 ( factory reset ) and number 6 ( erase user data ) this is necessary as I tried once skipping this option and device keep rebooting non stop. I'm not sure what makes it rebooting and rebooting. maybe caches or dalvik not wiped completely using recovery wipe method.
5. Choose number 8, ( backup MRD data ) and next number 10 ( Save Parameter ) to backing up modem files into your external SD card.
[Edit] 6. Once you got your download file ready, extract it into your PC or directly to your sdcard ( external sd ).
7. Create a 'new folder' in sdcard and rename it to 'sdfuse' and copy .qsb ROM file you extracted earlier into sdfuse folder. So the path will be /sdcard1/sdfuse/romfile.qsb
And now, reboot into service mode. Now choose number 4 ( SD update ) and let's it do it work, flashing will take about 5 minutes.
and REBOOT!
Now, let see if you're having any issue e.g stuck at boot, please repeat the process once again and I'm sure it will fix.
And if phone not detecting your SIMcard. please boot into Service Mode and choose number 11 ( Load Parameter ) and REBOOT.
Good Luck! :fingers-crossed::fingers-crossed:
Low ram issue on my s856
Hi mate thanks for the info, i have td-lte model i think is cn set. I have problem with low ram issue, my free ram always below 300mb which causing game auto quit eg. Coc, boombeach. It started auto quit when free ram reach below 150mb. Need restart phone to restore free ram above 300mb then can run game but after a few play the game auto quit again, also having problem keyboard not display in game due to low ram. I find out that the vibe ui is consume alot of ram than non vibe, example open setting it consume about 66mb of ram, with non vibe from lenovo a536 just used 23mb of ram. Now im root and disable unimportant system app to free up more 300mb ram just to get some game run. When compare mine s856 without app running with a536, mine will get average 350mb(heavily system app disable)free ram but a536 without app easily get 550mb free ram. Any solution? Or how to downgrade to non vibe.

Just try the ram expander app, it really works, my coc didnt quit automaticaly and keyboard works in game, i set swap file to 200mb just for testing, but suffer lag maybe my class 10 kingston memory card not perform as fast as it should or didnt fast enough to the system requirement. Thanks anyway mate as its another option to avoid app close.:good:
Thanks mate
Need for MRD and Parameters data backup.
Unfortunately, restoring modem configuration (11 . Load Parameter) doesn't work for ROW firmwares installed on Chinese models.

I also flashed Lenovo_S856_ROW_S138_141113 because the stock ROM was the Chinese one. While the OS is far more stable and polished now, 3G/LTE functionality now is gone... GSM radio signal is also less stable than before.
I'm desperately trying to find the original Chinese stock ROM so as to backup MRD and Parameters but... no way, only ROW firmwares out there.
I'm wondering whether your phone is the same Chinese LTE version (MSM8926 CPU, 1 GB RAM, 8 GB ROM) of mine and, if you saved those MRD and Parameters data, you want/can share them with me in order to allow me to bring 3G/LTE functionalities back.
Thank you in advance,
Luigi

Hi Luigi,
Apparently, I'm not very sure if my S856 is China Set or not ( but well.. specs are same with yours though ). You can try to restore this MRD and Parameters backup files onto your phone.
Backup your own modem files first and copy paste them into separate folder ( e.g : 'sdfuse-backup' ) in case something going wrong.
Download here ( Google Drive )
Good Luck

Hi RidzVarn,
sorry for the late reply. Actually I managed to take those files out from a stock Chinese ROM, but simply saving/restoring them through the Service Menu doesn't do the job. I guess there are other file and settings in /system and/or in other partitions that are needed in order to make modem working.
In the end, I just reflashed a Chinese ROM flashing also GApps and SuperSU through TWRP, and I'm fine with the result.
I'd like to thank you, however, for your efforts to help me in sorting the issue out -- it was very kind of you.
Best wishes,
Luigi

Please try to:
pull the battery out;
wait 20-30 seconds;
plug the battery in;
plug the USB cable to the PC end only;
and keeping pressed Volume-Down...;
... plug also the microUSB connector to the phone;
release the Volume Down after 3-5 seconds;
check via Device Manager if a 'Bulk' interface has been detected.
If not, retry the same procedure but keep pressing the Volume-Up, this time.
If the Bulk interface got detected by Windows, use the MiFlash tool to flash your favourite firmware again.
Remember to disable the Windows' 'Driver Signature Enforcement' at the boot-up, and disable also any Host-IPS and Antivirus running on your machine.
Hope this can help.

Hi dxshah,
Weeww.. That's quiet buthurted. You can try to fix it using MiFlash tools as said by Luigi.
Always take a pre-caution step before flashing/updating ROM. Make sure your battery is at 80% and above or just plug in the charger while doing live update.[emoji1]
Thanks Luigi for your post, I didn't know and haven't discover that steps yet. Will try to find out more about MiFlash tools[emoji106] [emoji1]

You can find the download link to MiFlash (look at the bottom of the page) and a bunch of other useful information (well, the post is quite lengthy) here:

This is an alternative, direct link to the MiFlash tool:

Awesome story of him on rescueing dead droid. [emoji12]
Although, I've no longer using S856, this is still useful for my next Qualcomm device, maybe..lol [emoji16] Thanks again for sharing!

Got an Error when i tried
Thanks friend for the explanation. I did all you listed above, but when I tried to update from my sd card I get an error
ERROR: product is...
I have tried with all 3 stock rom firmwares .qsb I have found but still same error.
What could be the cause? And possible solution
Thanks

Did you flash a custom recovery (e.g. TWRP)?
If so, restore the stock recovery first, and then try again.
Cheers,
Luigi

Hi Pjajiro,
Where did u put that .qsb file? Actually, you have to create a 'new folder' in your sdcard root and rename it to 'sdfuse' and put the ROM qsb file in it. And try again. [emoji1]
My apologies, I have forgot to include that step in this thread, and will edit the line asap.
If you still get the same error, then it might be caused from ROM itself. Maybe its not for your device.
