Hey guys,
because the display of my phone was broken, it has been replaced by a "new" one. Unfortunately the new display shows the burn-in-effect. The navigation bar, which is on-screen, is not 100% vanishing, when for example a bright video is watched. So the company which repaired the phone is claiming that this is issue is caused by the software.
My question is: This cant be true right? The burn-in-effect is always caused by hardware right?
I would like to show you an image, but I dont know how? No links allowed for the first 10 posts :/
Thanks guys

Hey MGlolenstine,
here is a link to a picture with my screen. Replace the xx

Thank you for you help.
If the screen on the picture is supposed to be 100% white, then yes, it's hardware. Your question was "May software cause burn-in effect" and the answer is yes. On most "plasma" TVs there was burn in effect if the static picture was shown for a long time. And what the burn-in effect does, it makes picture "ghost" on the place, where picture used to be. Try turning your screen black(turn it off) and try to see, if the bar is still there. If the bar is still there(even barely visible), it's 100% hardware and if the bar isn't there (and I mean completely vanished) it's 100% software.
Yes on this picture Ive set the brightness to 100%. So its caused by the screen-component itself right?
But when screen is turned off, the navigation bar is 100% black. :/ You said this is caused by the software then. So its unsure what it is caused by?
What do you mean by it being 100% black? Like 100% invisible? You can try flashing it with torch, to see if the bar is really 100% gone, because this burn-in is usually caused by "lazy pixels" as we call them on led displays I'm 90% sure it's hardware issue... Go and replace your screen 2nd time on (replacers) warranty.
Sent from Lenovo a6000 1GB version.
Yes its 100% invisible. Even with a flash light. Ive already sent it to this company twice. And they said its not their fault, its caused by the software.
So my next step is to send my phone to a surveyor to check if it caused by the hardware. But I want to be pretty sure that it is the hardware before I send it, because I dont want to waste money.
Do you have LED or LCD display?

OK so they might just be lazy pixels... Can I ask you to run pixelwake gif for led displays? Try it and you'll see if it works... :fingers_crossed:

Sorry but that gif was used long time ago, to try to fix led pixels by showing many colors... I found this app https://play.google.com/store/apps/...s+fix&pcampaignid=APPU_1_2eKeV-6BBYS5UfGelNAP its supposed to fix your pixels... Test it and it might work.. Sorry for such a long link
Hey MGlolenstine,
thanks for the link. Unfortunately the app did not work. My idea is now to order a new display and replace this with the defect one. So I can be 100% sure.
Thank you very much for your help and have a nice day.
No problem, I'm glad that we resolved the issue wish you luck on your path to victory cya

Does everyone get the screen burn. Its really bugging me lately. I've had quick look through the forums but can't find much on it. Is there anyway to fix or reduce it with maybe screen frequency tweaks or something.

I have two devices and both have screen burn.. in fact all desire s i have seen burn the status bar.. if screen is on for more than 5 minutes. don't worry about it
Yupp, also having it. Less obvious since I've switched to 25% brightness, but it is temporary, so I'm not bothered much.
happens here also. Try to apply a white image for some time, it helps LCD screens

Ehm... If you need to perform these steps to see this screen burn... Then how much of a problem is it? The subject of this topic suggests that this is a huge problem while in fact it is hardly noticable.
In normal day to day use you will probably never have any problem. I have never noticed the problem with my Desire S
Correct me if I'm wrong, but you can't get screen burn on an LCD screen (which is what the Desire S has), only plasma screens get screen burn.
Yeah smart guy. Turn on brightness 100% then run i.e. skype and leave it in main menu for some time, then return to home screen and tell me what You see.
Good thing is, that it is only temporary and screen returns to normal fairly quick.

If it doesn't last, it ain't screen burn. It's image retention.
Well... Then Desire S suffers from image retention. Anyone cares?

So...
In this thread it seems a known problem, yet some people don't notice it that much with normal use. I also have this problem, and I play chess a lot where I keep the screen on for quite a while before switching away. I keep seeing the board on the homescreen.
I know it's not permanent, it disappears, and yet, it's quite annoying for me. I have a few questions:
- Does this screenburn/image retention get worse over time?
- Is this an issue which only affects one batch of phones?
- Can this issue be resolved by replacing the screen? ...
- ...and would that be covered by the warranty.

well, i'm sure screenburn/image retention is not covered by warranty, because sooner or later it will happen to the most phones, and i think htc knows that.
And i think it does not get worser over time. i just experienced that image retention was completely gone when i flashed a new rom, with different interface. And when i returned back to my old rom today, i quickly had image retention again. i do absolute not know if this relates to each other but i definetly recognized a difference.
i'm sorry if i did write unclearly, i try my very best
I've just flashed back to sense after being on miui and the screen 'retention' is worse than ever. Don't know if its just cos there is more black on white or some thing to do with sense itself.

just my oppinion but i believe that what we are all experiencing is neither screen burn nor image retention. i actually believe that it is software related. why? well, if u do a thorough test you will notice that if the "burnt" image of the statusbar is observed on solid gray backgrund, the clock changes. i mean, without going to homescreen or whatever, if grey image is displayed and the burnt statusbar is visible, the minutes change as they pass. at the top of my head i actually believe that it's a transparency glitch. or maybe that's only true in my case..

Had my Desire S for 9 months before I sold it for an XE, and I had the same problem with the phone. What I found out was the splash screen of XDAforums is the best to see if you have screen burn or not. My phone's issue was worst on top of the screen, where the notification var is, whenever I ran xda forum I could see clock, antena and WiFi visible on the starting picture of it.
I also noticed that this issue gets worse by time, and the day I sold my Desire S it was in the worst situation ever. I could even burn the keyboard on my screen after like 5 minutes of chatting on Gtalk.
What I think is, Desire S LCD panel has this defect and this could happen to anyone sooner or later; however, for those who use their phones more intensively it appears sooner.
I suggest getting your phones to a service care center and ask for a LCD replacement, because it'll get worse soon.

Hi,
I live in Europe, and I use a XT926 with the latest verizon ROM (9.16.6) and the phone is rooted.
Last day I realized an issue. The phone refreshing the screen constantly (it takes 1sec only, and first I see a white screen, and after refreshing). It makes more when the phone is shaking (for example on a train). This makes me crazy. I started to go into topic, i cleared the cache of circles and homescreen but it makes now too.
Please help me solve this issue.
Thank you very much

I can't understand your description of what exactly the problem is, but if it definitely happens more when the phone is shaking (are you sure about that?) it sounds like a hardware issue to me. If the screen is going white, maybe a problem with the digitizer connection? If it is a hardware problem and your warranty is still valid, you can probably have it fixed.

No, like I said sometimes, the screen reloading, and this is only 0.5sec, but during this phase, I see white background only. It must be some 4.1.2 issue, I think.
Hi,
I'm not sure if there already is a thread about this problem, so sorry if there is
When I grabbed my Nexus 5 out my pocket, the screen didn´t work. It only shows pixels. I´ve tried to reset it to factory settings using a hard reset but that doesn´t work. It still only shows the pixels. I can´t send it back to LG for repair because I´ve changed the kernel and I can´t get a connection with my pc. Does anybody have any idea how to fix it?
Thanks in advance!
What do you mean by "can only see pixels" ?? Blurry lines?? Distortion?? If so, there's a possibility that the flex cable might have gone bad.. In any case, you need to send it in for repairs.

Yes I can only see blurry lines in different colours. But is it possible to repair it by replacing the screen + touch module?

May be, May be not. No one can know the extent of the damage without opening up the device.
You need professional help. So, it's either Google (if you've bought from play) or LG. There's nothing you can do here as the screen is completely useless. Just send it in and hope for the best.
If you want to backup your data, you could boot up the phone (if you can) and use adb to backup if you've enabled usb debugging. But that's about it..
Good luck!

Nexus 5 showing only pixels
Hi
Even I am facing the same issue. My nexus 5 is only 4 months old and from the past few days, display is not working consistently. It only shows pixels all over the screen and there is no image at all. Also, there is no physical damage to the phone at all. Although It just fell once recently on its back from a chairs height but it already had a strong spigen slim armor case that provides pretty good protection so i dont think that fall could have caused any internal damage.
A few days after this and after i upgraded to 5.1, I first started to see the screen hanging and then suddenly when i tried to restart, it started showing pixels all over the screen. A few times when i press power button multiple times, then sometimes (say 1 out of 20 times or even less) ,home screen appears but even then it does not work. I am very frustrated with the problem and not sure what could be the issue. Could you please let me know what could be the problem. I have shown it to some repair shops but it looks like they are just looking to grab money and they simply tell me that they can replace display.
So i thought its better to post it here in xda to get feedback on this. Please can you let me know what could be problem, is it hardware or software issue and how it could be resolved. Please help me urgently as I am not able to use the phone.
Thanks.

That's not a very good picture, I can't make a determination based off of that. If you post a clearer one I can definitely help you.
It kind of looks like a Chinese replacement screen. I'm not 100% sure with the picture supplied, but I'm going to guess that's what's going on.

Well respawn, you can test it with some LED notification apps. Change the color see what happens. Otherwise you can replace the light yourself if it's damaged or return the device (assuming the seller didn't say the LED light was broken) Hope it works out for you.

Somebody told me maybe this yellow thing(under the picture) just moved. Is that possible?
I got a little money back. So it's not a big problem but i wanna fix it.

Test it out I say, only way to find out :good:
Hi I baught a Galaxy A52s 5G two days ago and I noticed after switching to 60fps from 120fps that 2 pink stuck pixel appear in top left area of my screen. When I turn the refresh rate to 120 the pink pixel color disappears (they works normally). Any game running at 60hz also shows these pixels. Last time I was playing a new stuck pixel appeared, this time its color is cyan, when I looked at the pink pixel that gets stuck i found out that it started working normally, and after 1 minute the cyan one disappeared and the pink reappeared again. After inspecting using a white image i noticed another light blue one at the top too. When I play Genshin Impact it annoys me sinse I have never had this issue with my previous galaxy phones. I'm asking now if there is a fix to this. Thank you to anyone who will reply to me.
Try clearing the system cache.
Try a hard reboot.
Try it in safe mode.
Test the display with ScreenTest.
Factory reset, test before loading 3rd party apps.
However it sound like a defective display matrix or mobo. Return it if you can't resolve the issue.

The first three did nothing. the display test in 60hz shows the defect pixels while the same test in 120hz does not show any.
Does this mean that its definitely a hardware failure ? i hope that its only a software issue. I used the samsung members to report the error, I dont know if they wilp ever reply, I reported yesterday night.
The defect pixels are visible as soon qs I click on the 60hz and hit ok in Display settings, and they magically disappear after selecting 120hz and hiting ok.
Edit: knowing the samsung service in my country i'm almost certain that they will just mock me and laugh about this as its not really visible unless you really look for it.

I'm leaning more towards it being hardware than firmware in this case.
Samsung has had a lot of issues with their variable refresh rate displays.
I would really make the seller eat this one.
Your call.

Thank you for your replies. I wish i could make them change the phone but i'm certain they wont. I read in many posts of people who encountred the same issue, and even if they accept to replace the screen I know that the people who do repairs at samsung are really bad and dont care about scratching your phone or using visible glue to assemble it, I had an experience with A20 which had its fast charging broken and only charged at 5w, they replaced the bottom piece that houses the usb port but the back was very scratched and you can see the glue used, and I wasn't even sure if its really mine or someone else's phone as they factory reset it before working on hardware stuff. Let alone the time they need to get the part and fix it.
I'll just hope that they'll fix it, a friend of mine told that screen hardware defects can be corrected by software, bit if it was hpu defect i dont think there is mush they can do.
Anyway thank you for your replies its really appreciated.
I would do a refund for cash. Not sure what consumer rights you have in your country.
In the US I can right the defective product and if a MC or Visa was used the bank can do a charge back to the merchant for a full refund.
I think it's a matrix failure, a capacitor(s) or thin-film transistor(s). It could be the OLED pixels themselves. They are very complex displays.
