Moto Mods, what would you like to see? - Moto Z Force Accessories

I will start off by saying i would like to see a case that protects the phone and acts as an extension for the mod links, in order to still put mods on (on top of the case) and not lose functionality. It woupd have to be thin of course.
Also a cheap battery extension mod, maybe zerolemon or something.
But a rotating camera lense mod would be super legit. What would you like to see?

I like the "style shell" idea, but I'd be interested in a style mod that also had protection for the sides of the phone...
Shattershield is great for the screen...but, if the phone drops on its side, you're still going to break/scuff/crack that part of the phone...

Yea that would be legit, and maybe with just a little raise so the front doesnt get scratches, i know it cant shatter but i hate scratches

A style shell with wireless charging. No extra battery, just wireless charging. Please.

This would be good as well!...
I'd also be interested to see what kind of extra battery they could fit inside a mod that just eliminates the camera bump, something the size of a style shell
The existing battery packs bring the thickness of the phone out past the camera...obviously they wouldn't be able to squeeze the extra 2200mah of juice into a thinner pack, but I'd love the option

I would love to see the pro camera mod. I've seen some teaser images of it. Definitely something I would purchase if it's actually decently made and not overly expensive.

I honestly like my phone better, holds better and feels more natural, with my Incipio battery mod on the phone. I does add a little extra thickness, but it's designed really well and fits my hand really well.

You're right, it's much less bulky than I thought it would be...felt nice actually

Would love to see a keyboard slider attachment a la the OG! Droid

Some ideas I'd love to see come to fruition:
- High gain WiFi antenna (which can be used for being a hotspot as well)
- High gain LTE Antenna (if that's a thing)
- E-ink display
- Wallet
- Style case that actually protects phone (TPU type or w/e, just something that won't slip from hands)
- Solar Charger (prob not practical since the tech isn't efficient yet, but still cool!)
- 2nd Touch screen
- Drone body that can follow a pre-defined flight path and the Moto Z will film it all. No controller required (yeah, I went there)

Love it!
In deciding between this phone for the Note 7, I'm leaning towards the Z purely for the mods. It makes it seem like it wont be outdated so quickly. I had a hard time coming up with what new mods would be but @jsmuli2 has some really good ideas!

An ir blaster with headphone jack built into an extended battery would be nice

Either the teased camera mod, or even a DSLR sensor/lens attachment mod would be nice. An e ink display would be nice too although I do own a kindle.
I would like to see something the phone enhances as opposed to enhancing the phone. Maybe something like an rc car that you take the body off of pop the phone on and tweak performance based on how you will be using it. Imagine the possibilities if that route is taken with mods. The device itself can be customized with low end tech specs since the power house would be the phone.

How about a car mount mod, with turbo charging and sd card storage for dash cam...

I just want a case that you can use the mods with, but still functions as a full case. Doesn't seem like it would be that hard. Spring pins on the inside, contacts on the outside, and magnets... I'd think that would be a no-brainer.
And a mod with a real headphone jack wouldn't be terrible.

[Q] Can we get a new battery door?

All of these cases you see on Amazon and Verizon and nobody has considered machining a new battery door out of aluminum or something? The cheap plastic has gotta be the #1 thing a lot of people hate about this phone, and I would definitely be willing to pay $15-20 for a nice metal back.
Does Samsung have some kind of patent that prevents this?

I suspect a metal door would interfere with the antennas, wouldn't it?
On the Nexus S, some guy had the same complaint about the plastic feeling cheap, he came up with a mod that involves spraying some rubber coating on it. Seems popular, cheap, easy, and reversible.

most other oem's use metal doors...samsung seems to be the only fan of plastic. there might be something you have to do to prevent interference but it has to be possible.

It would be nice if we could get something like a soft-touch black plastic battery door for better grip/nicer feel/less fingerprints. Also might be more functional than a metal door on our Charges. The antennas are on the bottom-back of the phone for some reason.
Samsung doors
I called Samsung today and they have two different doors you can buy I believe still plastic but have a nicer look and one somehow charges or keeps the battery charged longer (nvm it is only a inductive bacK). What I get for believing them lol, but anyways just thought I would share what I found.

The funny part is the shape and cutouts of the pictured cover match the Charge.
Would really love to see a more grippy battery door with kickstand for this phone. I'm looking to replace my Thunderbolt with a Charge and I know I'm going to really miss the kickstand.
The Samsung holster/case combo looks nice, but it's going to add unwanted bulk and I'm pretty sure it won't fit in the car and desk docks with the case on.

That pic I posted is directly from Sammy's website so don't know why you feel it isn't legit. Unless Samsung is teasing us or posting a false picture lol...Anyways here is the link...http://www.samsung.com/us/mobile/cell-phones-accessories/EBC-994WBEBSTD?
I tried Phantom skinz carbon fiber wrap to add some texture for better grip on this phone but ended up not liking it and peeled it off.
Recently went with the plastidip spray on stuff and it works much better. 2 coats of it are working great adding a good grippy feel to the back battery cover. Hope that helps.

Seemed like people were doing the inside as well to make it harder to peel off, but I don't know if it'd make a difference.
Does the phone still fit in the Car and Home dock with the back sprayed?
I don't have any official docks so I can't guarantee, but it adds very little thickness... unless the phone is already snug in the dock it will be fine.

PowerSkin silicone skin with built-in battery

I just purchased the PowerSkin silicone skin with built-in battery at my local Tmo store, and it's really cool! The back of the case is itself a 1500 mAh battery, and it is a soft case that fits snugly on the Sensation. There is a connector on the inside of the case to "plug in" the case, so the phone actually believes it is charging from an AC source until the battery is depleted... then of course it switches to the phone's own battery. It adds about 8.5 mm of thickness to the phone when installed.
It's a clever way of making an extended battery and case for the Sensation. Downside is that the back has cutouts for the camera, speaker, and flash, but all lower holes on the back are covered by the battery/case.
Another interesting side effect of this battery-inside-the-case configuration is that battery monitoring apps can't tell whether you're on AC power or on power from this case's battery. (Perhaps someone will discover some way of detecting this configuration and modify a battery/power app to show a realistic estimation of remaining battery time...)
I was reading through other PowerSkin reviews for other phones, and people had previously complained that there was no ability to turn this external battery off, resulting in the phone constantly getting (from my measurements) about a 13-25 mA trickle charge during non-use. On this model, there is a button on the back that if you hold down for 2 seconds, it toggles the battery on/off. Also, if you just press this button normally, it lights up 4 LEDs to show the approximate charge of the battery.
An interesting note is that this changes the location of where you charge your phone. You must now plug your charger in on the RIGHT side of the phone - into the external battery itself. The PowerSkin's circuitry passes through any charging to first charge the phone's own battery, and THEN charge the external battery in the case.
Overall... I like it! See here for photos.

The product is listed as being "1.95H cm (.77 in)" thick, but this includes the height of the wrap around-sides that wind up going over the side of the Sensation. The Sensation itself is 11.3 mm thick, and the battery back of the case is slightly less thick than the phone itself... I'd put it at 8.5 mm, so the total thickness of the phone now becomes approximately 18.8 mm thick, which I think makes it on par with (perhaps slightly thinner than) other extended battery configurations with a replacement back.
There is negligible height and width added to the sides of the phone -- with the exception of a small area that sticks out on the left of the phone to allow for the case's own power cord to plug into the phone.
See photos here for what it looks like.
I'm not really digging how much the connector sticks out.
And I wish they would of made the cut around the camera and speaker a bit more fitted. I really like how everything else looks on the back cover, but for $59.99, they could done a little more for the overall design...

That's for the micro USB for the case to the phone. The charge port for the case is on the other side. I think its because the phone charge port is on the side. Powerskin has one for the mytouch 4g and its the same tumor on the case.

I was talking about the full case from Samsung not the s view cover. I ended up picking up the light blue one from a local best buy. Only had it on for an hour or so but I have to say I'm really liking this case. Doesn't add Much weight or bulkiness to the phone and still feels very solid. Pretty impressed.
Edit: my only gripe so far is that the headphone cut out is a little small. Headphones with a straight plug work just fine but if they have a curve they don't fit into the slot... kind of a bummer as I use an auxiliary cord in my car.

Review
I have this case for over a month now, and I'm pretty much happy with it. The only thing I didn't like was that here in Saudi Arabia, only 3 colors were available for sale, Blue, White and Pink. I know there is a Black/Dark Grey variant of this protective cover but unfortunately it's not available here.
Here is a simple review that I manage to put:
Official Samsung Protective Cover+ for Galaxy S4
Pros
A simple yet functional design.
Protects the whole back and sides of the phone without the bulky appearance and feel.
It also protects the glass cover of the primary camera by giving it a few millimeters of clearance from the back.
Sturdy back, conforming and flexible sides for easy installation and removal.
The cover for the Volume Rocker and Power Button is soft and easy on the fingers. Doesn't give that rigid feel like other cases on the market.
There is an available slot if you like putting a hand or neck strap on your phone.
Cons
There is a little bit of space between the phone and the case, and if left unattended, dirt may settle-in. At least monthly, remove the phone from the case and clean it with a soft moistened piece of cloth with a non-alcohol based cleaning solution.

mine came in the mail today. i gave my little mini-review of it in another thread, so this is just copy and pasted:
this case definitely lives up to all the hype i've been reading about it. the buttons respond really, really well; and it's a nice combo of soft materials on the sides and a hard plastic back. if the green was more lime (or neon), this would be my daily driver without a question. since my "negative" isn't even really a negative, i would highly recommend this case.

Galaxy S 5 Car mount

Recommend the best car mount here for Galaxy S 5.
A bit more expensive, but the CraigsDocks Dock is billet aluminum and low-profile and is true one-hand operation and adjustable to work with S2, S3, S4, Note series and now the S5.
http://www.craigsdocks.com/samsung-galaxy-s3-s4-note-2-3-car-dock/
I've had mine a year and won't have to buy a new one when I upgrade to the S5 because it fits all large Samsung superphones.
It's also adjustable to work with ALL cases, including the extra large cases that have built-in batteries.

The air dock is what ultimately tipped the balance for me getting an S5, after seeing it I knew built-in Qi charging was a must have and since Sprint only offers the Nexus 5 in 16GB flavor (not nearly enough, I've got 15GB of stuff on my SD card today which easily exceeds the 12GB formatted capacity, not to mention 2 years from now).

have you ever used this before? I'm curious to know if it would cause any damage to the internals of the CD slot. I see it has amazing reviews at Amazon (which I trust for the most part) but wondering if you had any personal experience with it...

notice my cd changer is curved out but the rubber "fins" still fit snug and very sturdy. They are rubber and do no damage. if for some reason it just will not fit in there on your car model, you can always send it back worry free (with Prime) but it shouldn't be a problem. the grip has a light rubber pad and is controlled by a spring action adjustment. I love it because i can easily place my phone into it by pushing my phone up and in. I take it out with the same motion, press up and pull out. it is made in Korea and the material and parts are very well made.
I really don't know why some of the people here are buying 50-70 dollar suction phone mounts. that is a total rip off.

thanks for the detailed write-up and pics! I have the phone and iPad version sitting in my Amazon wishlist right now... maybe will push them to checkout next payday
Upon inspection of both of my vehicles, it looks like it will work really well and actually sit at a great height (within arms and eyes reach) and not block any controls to anything else (only blocking a clock in my Civic and a clock/temp screen in my Highlander)
thanks again :good:

I ordered a similar one, well basically identical, and it fits superbly in my 2008 honda accord exl. It sits just below all the controls. I was some what worried about it not reaching out far enough as the cd player is recessed when compared with all the radio and nav controls. But it's about as perfect as possible. The best part about this mount in my opinion is that it keeps a person like myself from having to many items on the windshield. Without this I'd have- Radar Detector, Phone, toll tag, and gps, way to many things, phone being the largest of them all. Anyway, I'll take some pictures and maybe a mini review later. I highly recommend to anyone who want a good out of the way docking solution.

thanks! I'd love to see pictures. I have an '08 civic ex... by looking at my dash, it seems like it would sit above all my controls and only cover up that little screen that shows the radio station and the time.

I'll take pictures when I get home this afternoon. I forgot my camera at home today. Was a bit flustered this morning. But I'll get you some pics for sure.

Bumper Case that is Mod Friendly?

I have searched high and low and I can't seem to find a Bumper style case that will let me use Mods. The clear one that comes with the Moto Z is perfect, but it's ugly. Am I missing something, am I the only one that desperately needs this?
Judging from what's available, and some reviews I've read, the popular perspective is that you either use Mods or use a case, but not both.
I have a tendency to put my phone down on it's screen, so I just need something that elevates it from the surface. I also have a tendency to drop my phone and the bumper cases I've had in the past have saved me from that pesky insurance deductible.
Will we ever see a Bumper case that protects the screen and edges while allowing us to swap out Mods? Is there already something available hiding in the dark corners of the interwebs?

As good as it gets. You put it on from the back. High edges around the screen. But also a edge around the back preventing fast and quick swap of mod without removing bumper too.

Do you own this? Is it difficult to press the volume and power buttons because they are covered by the bumper?
I'm going to miss being able to fast swap Mods but if this will fit with any Mod attached then this is definitely what I need.
Edit: The only review I've found states that the charging port does not line up correctly and it constantly slips off. Honestly it sounds like they bought it for the wrong phone but I'd love to hear if anyone has something good to say about this bumper...

I have this. The buttons on the bumper feel like metal to me and make excellent contact with the normal buttons. They are a little stiffer to push, but that makes accidental off button pushes less likely to happen.
The oem cord easily fits in the hole for the charger. I am not sure if this is the same case as the verizon one. The incipio case is very good, if not a bit expensive.
edit: It is also a very sniff case, does not shift or move at all.
You two convinced me, thank you!
No real problems with it. Haven't had it in a pocket pulling it up and down with any force though.
I had it in perfect fit around the charging port first time I mounted it. Then I wanted to check something and removed it and now it's slightly to the side. That seems to be a mounting issue rather than a bad fit.
Nice bumper but not perfect. Still... The best thing to use with mods so far.

The Verizon bumper works fine for me. Some type c cables are a bit wide and need to be seated properly, but otherwise exactly what you described that you needed. I swap between the Incipio wireless off grid and the JBL sound mod often and don't have to remove the bumper to do so.
I'm just using the included plastic bumper in the unlocked US version of the Z.
Glad to hear that there's a proper one from Incipio aside from the VZW bumper.
The included plastic one works great but is ugly IMO. I wish it were a flat black. I'm considering spraying it with Plasti Dip.
