[Q] Can we get a new battery door? - Verizon Droid Charge

All of these cases you see on Amazon and Verizon and nobody has considered machining a new battery door out of aluminum or something? The cheap plastic has gotta be the #1 thing a lot of people hate about this phone, and I would definitely be willing to pay $15-20 for a nice metal back.
Does Samsung have some kind of patent that prevents this?

I suspect a metal door would interfere with the antennas, wouldn't it?
On the Nexus S, some guy had the same complaint about the plastic feeling cheap, he came up with a mod that involves spraying some rubber coating on it. Seems popular, cheap, easy, and reversible.

most other oem's use metal doors...samsung seems to be the only fan of plastic. there might be something you have to do to prevent interference but it has to be possible.
thanks for that thread, though. that is a great idea. i'll be stopping at home depot on the way home from work

It would be nice if we could get something like a soft-touch black plastic battery door for better grip/nicer feel/less fingerprints. Also might be more functional than a metal door on our Charges. The antennas are on the bottom-back of the phone for some reason.

Samsung doors
I called Samsung today and they have two different doors you can buy I believe still plastic but have a nicer look and one somehow charges or keeps the battery charged longer (nvm it is only a inductive bacK). What I get for believing them lol, but anyways just thought I would share what I found.

Inductive cover maybe?

Replacement Doors
Yep one is a inductive door and adds some bulk to the phone. Sorry about the messup on the 1st post was what Samsung told me and I was a little hesitant to believe them and let me try to post the picks I have, 1st time was a no go.

I would have thought someone would construct a case back that would
feel like the HTC thunderbolt's, with a nice machined brush finish
of "SamSung" across the back. Would look really nice, I'd think.

The funny part is the shape and cutouts of the pictured cover match the Charge.

Would really love to see a more grippy battery door with kickstand for this phone. I'm looking to replace my Thunderbolt with a Charge and I know I'm going to really miss the kickstand.
The Samsung holster/case combo looks nice, but it's going to add unwanted bulk and I'm pretty sure it won't fit in the car and desk docks with the case on.

Samesung's Website
That pic I posted is directly from Sammy's website so don't know why you feel it isn't legit. Unless Samsung is teasing us or posting a false picture lol...Anyways here is the link...http://www.samsung.com/us/mobile/cell-phones-accessories/EBC-994WBEBSTD?

I tried Phantom skinz carbon fiber wrap to add some texture for better grip on this phone but ended up not liking it and peeled it off.
Recently went with the plastidip spray on stuff and it works much better. 2 coats of it are working great adding a good grippy feel to the back battery cover. Hope that helps.

Any chance of pictures of your finished product? Did you spray both the inside and outside of the battery door?

Only did the outside of the cover, no point in doing the inside as well.

Looks pretty good. I hope coveroo comes up with something soon...

Seemed like people were doing the inside as well to make it harder to peel off, but I don't know if it'd make a difference.

Does the phone still fit in the Car and Home dock with the back sprayed?

I don't have any official docks so I can't guarantee, but it adds very little thickness... unless the phone is already snug in the dock it will be fine.

Scratched metal

You know, I like the metal "stripe" down the back, but can you believe my fingernail scratched it? I don't think that bodes well for the long haul if I can scratch it that easily. And it's a real scratch, not a surface blemish as far as I can tell.
Anyone else already scratch the metal?
Mine is scratched, or scuffed, and I have no idea how it happened. I have been babying this thing.
i assume you took the plastic off of it? cause the plastic is easy to scratch. =) haha.

Yeah I just tried it again and I couldn't either, so I'm thinking it was there already. The reason I scratched with my nail in the first place was I thought I saw some left over plastic or something still there. So I tried to scratch it off.
Instead of putting ugly bulky cases on my devices I just buy a couple spare battery covers on Ebay a couple months after the phone is released. I always wonder why people cover up there nice looking phone with a rubber case. Wonder why the manufacturers just don't make a rubber phone?

hey, it really does happen. i havent taken off the protectors cause they're not peeling for me. lol.
I am very very careful with all of my phones. I have yet to actually scratch one(I always use cases and screen protectors.) I was shocked when after only having installed the battery and set the device down that the aluminum strip had multiple scratches on it. I have no idea how they got there. Went to local T Mobile store and checked their demo unit and NO SCRATCHES . With all of the handling etc no scratches!!! I wonder if it is a quality control issue with the aluminum? I put a case on it within 4 hours of receiving it. I am having to send this one back due to random reboots -signal issues-battery overheating-lcd screen bleeding at edges- so I will be very very careful to see what this aluminum strip on the back is like. I am starting to wonder whether this phone is ready for prime time or not due to all the issues I have found and the many other issues others have found. I believe this can be a giant of a phone if all of the bugs can be worked out.

Well, I exchanged it thanks to the nice folks at T-mobile.
Make sure it's not the plastic on the strip that's messed up, as the first thing they checked was whether or not the plastic was still on.

Dropping phones is inevitable. It will SOON eventually happen. I hate to put on cases too, but it's necessary.
I would have just left the plastic on...why take it off? It was literally invisible and you couldn't tell it was even there.
The Galaxy is actually a beast. I've dropped mine so many times and it held up. Don't let the lightness fool us..it's one beast and held it's own on it's fall...impressive.
As they say, the bigger and heavier you are, the harder you fall...
There's a huge advantage of the Galaxy being light...
The worst phones for falls are HTC's...wayyy to heavy...
I agree with dropping the galaxy s. That phone is well built! People may not like the plastic build but it is a very durable phone!
Regarding the G2x, I am carrying it naked it is a good looking phone. Gonna buy the European battery covers when they become available.

Loving this case. It does make the phone bulkier, but I have big hands so it works out for me.
The feather case was just released as well. It still does not have a cutout for the hdmi port. They said it would compromise the protection the case gives the phone. I don't get it, if everyone else can include a cutout for the port why don't they? I am disappointed because I used the feather on my Atrix and I have never used a case I liked that much.

Sweet, thanks for the heads up. I don't use the hdmi port enough to care that much, but I have been wanting a super thin/light case for awhile. Kinda pricey though.
love this case, but it's somewhat hard to get the hard cover over the rubbery inside layer. I've ripped mine already. I'm still able get the case to work ok, but just wanted to let anyone know who owns this case that you have to be careful with the soft layer.

I don't use it that much either but its a pain in the ass to remove when I do want to use it. There is no reason they can't make the cutout, every other case has it.
I couldn't get mine on! The corners would scrunch up on the side I was putting in last, and it made it impossible to fit properly.

You have to work it on slowly while pulling the edges of the hard cover outward with your thumbnails (until your thumbnail hurts, then you're pulling hard enough). Loosening the hard cover before installing by gently pulling the sides outward for a couple minutes also helps.
Does anyone have a link to this case on the Verizon site? I just went to the Verizon store and they said they don't carry the double cover for the Charge and I can't find it on their site either.
I have one, got it with the phone when I bought the phone off someone. I don't like it at all, makes the phone heavy and bulky but its free and im not spending money on a case when I know I will be selling the Charge as soon as the Samsung Galaxy S2 is out.

Seidio Surface case

So has anyone bought this case yet for the Charge? I notice that they are shipping these now according to their website. There aren't really any good pictures though, just the one of the back of the case. I would like to see what it looks like on the phone and what the coverage is in the front.

Great review. I had the same case on my fascinate and the cutout around the power button made locking/unlocking the screen fairly difficult. I ended up sending it back and getting an active-x instead.
Do you have any issues accessing the power button or any of the the other ports?
If not, I may have to pick this one up. I'm running naked with no holster and it's driving me nuts!
I have had no issues. However, to be fair, I've owned a Seidio case for my past 5 phones so I may just be used to it.

Thanks for the great review. I too have used a Seidio on my Hero and EVO. When mine came in the mail today I was worried about the new style. But like you said, seems to hold very well.
Question. Do you use a second battery? How often do you take the case off? I feel like im gonna break it when i do.
Edit
Question. Do you ever have trouble with the clip between the usb port and the volume buttons? Mine comes undone in my pocket EVERY time. This causes the bottom snaps to also come undone

Negative, but I take it off pretty regularly to keep dust and dirty down (and odin new ROMs). I found our pops apart fairly simply when I start at the slot under the hdmi out.

Yes, though not every time. Maybe once or twice a day... tops. I usually use the holster when I'm at work so I usually don't have the problem. Pushing left on the top piece (from the screen) will recreate the issue. More of an annoyance than a problem (didn't even notice it for a few weeks)!

They are definitely sturdy.
That being said, I find that the holster is what sells me on the product as it's extremely useful for me when I'm at work. Dollar for dollar, if you are looking for a similar case, Best Buy sells one that's almost identical. They'll even let you put it on the phone and try it before you purchase it.

That sounds good, i guess my friend bought a cheap one. the rubberized part of the corners started to peel off, then the clips snapped off about 2 weeks after he bought it. just from your review and the youtube review i saw, it did look significantly sturdier from what he had bought but i was just kind of paranoid after seeing his.
and on the case at best buy, i did like it but i was looking for a rubberized hardshell case, that was the only real flaw i saw with that one. which brings me to my next question, is this one sort of rubberized? i initially thought it was but now i'm starting to think otherwise lol

SkyRocket Dock Charger?

Are their any Skyrocket Dock chargers out their? I have searched high and low and can not find any...
I found a universal one online the other day that would be perfect.
Here it is:

I bought the spare battery system from Amazon.
Part: ET-CGPK004GSTA
Came with a NFC-capable Samsung battery and stand, I put my phone in portrait with it plugged in and can use the AirDroid application to send messages.
looking too
Since they put the usb port on the bottom, I am guessing they want to expand to have speakers, alarm clocks and everything else you can dock these phones in. I am guessing that companies that make this stuff will take a while to get these products out. I'm tired of seeing every type of docking station for iPods.
Hopefully there are making this location standard on all the new phones so it could be more universal to fit most android phones.
If anyone finds anything I hope they will post to this thread!

Yeah, thanks for posting that nexendz. I started a similar thread here with some other options but have yet to find something right. Right now I'm using a business card holder with some foam stick on pads as a stand with the stock charger, although that costs about the same as that Zenis dock.

Removed 3mm overall from the sides to fit case. Now fits the sides but didn't account for the back so it's a bit tight but I don't mind as it keeps it well seated. It is hollow behind the plastic so you will see the void behind it but since the phone will be in the stand it shouldn't matter, at least it's not white plastic painted black which would look worse.
Thanks!

Rubber feet to protect the glass and unmuffled sound

So I wanted to protect the back glass with a screen protector since I would generally be laying the phone down on it's back. I got one of those "apply when wet" guards and it went on ok. The only problem is, the material is so soft, it basically makes a seal on a flat table which cuts off the speaker completely. I only noticed when I was missing text messages, that the sound was significantly reduced from laying it down.
So I got these rubber feet So far, so good. I was afraid they would come right off, but they are on there pretty good. If they do come off, I still have 92 left! I might remove my back screen protector, if these work out. They aren't too hard to get used to when holding, but they certainly don't look the greatest. I attached some pics.

OP's idea is amazing! Agreed that the circular ones look ugly, but say something like two thin strips along the length of the phone, or two horizontal ones along the top and bottom curves?
How does one go about getting custom shapes like that?

I thought of this some time ago and actually sourced some 3M manufactured ones in transparent polyurethane with an acrylic adhesive. They make them as small as 6.4mm X 1.9mm. I have not found anywhere that sells them in anything less than bulk so I didn't order any. I am waiting to try a few more cases before I decide whether to do this, but am pretty happy with the diztronic TPU for now. My Poetic hardback is supposed to be here tomorrow. I am guessing that if the Poetic works well, and the phone will fit in it with the 3M pads on, I may go for it.
i bet you could find something at michaels.
It's not something I'd do, because how the device looks is a major selling point for me and this doesn't look great.
Not saying it's bad though, it's actually a very clever idea. I do worry about the back getting scratched and the muffled speaker is annoying, so nice job man

I have some extra feet from an old laptop that were supposed to go in the four corners of the screen so the screen wouldn't press against your keyboard. They're maybe 0.5cm wide. Definitely been thinking about doing this myself.
However, I got the bumper instead. Which is now making me think I might plastidip the backside of it so it becomes uber grippy.

Lol, yeah they aren't pretty. It's a work in progress until I can find some that are smaller.

Do you have a link to a bulk order?
Edit: I found these. Cheapest I can find is $234 for 3000 pieces. They are the same size as what I have, only clear. Would like to find something like a strip along the edge, to make it lower profile.

Afraid not, but yeah that's them, and they were about 7 cents a piece by the case.

LOL 5 bucks for 28 cents worth of product... that is some margin!
Honestly, if you were gong to do something like this, I would suggest a few things.
Go to a cabinetry or hardware store, to look for the bumpers. You would be surprised at what they have.
A better solution, which I was thinking of is dynamat, the non aluminum version.
Take a sheet of plain paper, use a pencil to make an exact tracing of the back of the phone. Use the rubbing method to make sure you know the exact edges.
Overlay onto the dynamat, and use an exact knife to cut out your new back, and add sound channels. But it seems like a lot of work though.

I'm thinking a drop of hot glue would do

that's a really really bad idea.. considering that glass could crack at the instant the heat from hot glue touches the glass surface
I never said put it on the glass. Think outside the box
