S7 flat/Exynos Heating and extreme battery drain - Samsung Galaxy S7 Questions and Answers

hello guys, i hope you all are having a great day. so my problem is this : as soon as i got the phone, i rooted it ( obviously knox tripped but that doesn't matter to me) i flashed some customs roms, but i didn't like them because the phone was lagging and freezing randomly from time to time with the phone starting to heat in just 5 min or less and the battery life got crappy. Then i decided to flash a stock rom odin, but that didn't change a thing, since the phone still having having heating issues and extreme battery drain. oh yeah, and fast charging doesn't seem to be fast even though the fast charge activated. Help you guys

Try a factory reset, and do a clean setup (don't restore any apps).. Then just give it like 2 days (the battery usually drains faster the first couple of days).. This same thing happened to me when I got the phone out of the box, rooted it as well after a week because I don't care about knox or warranty, phone was heating and battery draining so fast, I did a factory reset and a clean setup, after 2 days of discharging the phone and charging it to 100%, the battery life got better and stabilized, the heat went away. Now I easily get about 6 hours of SOT with heavy usage (gaming and stuff), and the phone barely gets hot (it only gets hot when I play pokémon Go on 4G because it uses your GPS constantly). I have the exynos version as well.
Edit: Also try Package Disabler Pro (it's paid but it's worth it), it disables all samsung bloatware and some useless services that keep running in the background, it sure helped my phone feel a lot smoother and get even better battery life.

I'd avoid Titanium Backup, just start fresh.. I'm rooted mainly for adaway because I hate ads, I use xposed as well..
Let me know how it ends up

You can also go to Settings > Battery > Details and then select apps that you don't always use to 'always save power'. Your stats seem good to me.

I heard somewhere that when you root S7 it changes the CPU's governor and it starts to lag overheat etc.(only in snapdragon model)

He is using the Exynos version, which does not have this problem. Only the Qualcomm root method results in the cpu governor being changed to performance, causing battery drain and heat.

[Completed] Nexus 5 battery acting weird

Boughr a n5 this june.. Was pretty happy with it.. Got quite decent battery life out of it. Around 4.5-5 hrs on a daily basis.. Decided to root the phone 2 months ago.. Unlocked the bootloader using fastboot and flashed cwm.. Then flashed franco kernel.. Got root working and all but battery started draining like crazy.. Got around 2-2.5 hrs sot.. Thought had done something wrong so after a week decided to go back to stock using the 4.4.4 factory images from googles developer website.. Flashed it using fastboot and everything booted up fine.. But battery life didnt really improve.. Still get 2-3hrs sot.. Then installed the 3rd dev preview 2 weeks ago and am now using the offical lollipop rom.. Battery problem never went away.. Any idea why??
So one thing to keep in mind is that battery life can be affected by several things; number of apps installed which also may be running in the background, brightness level, GPS, etc.
So I recommend you download the app " better battery stats, open it and then let it run over night.
The app should give you info on what's going on.
If you're still stuck, open the app, go to share and you can get a log.
Post that log in this thread and politely ask if someone can explain it.

Thanks for the quick response.. I totally get ur point.. Correct me if I'm wrong.. But aren't wakelocks things which run in the background and prevent it from going to sleep?.. In that case i still don't understand y i can't seem to get a good sot when using the phone continuously.. I mean if i browse on chrome continuously without a break.. Battery still last about 2.5 hrs.. Also currently I'm running a minimal amount of apps as compared to the initial period with the good battery and nothing new.. I have a feeling that i might have messed something up during flashing.. Is that even possible??.. Anyway.. Ill try getting on that better battey status too

Don't worry about battery life until 2 week after !!!!

Hi everyone , I'm new in the community but I already found that this is one of the best phone forums online , normally you come here for help because you have a problem right ? But today I'm just here to give an advice, I notice that many people complain about the battery life on their new phones , I had the same issue with my note 5 , I saw a video on YouTube and the phone showed an estimation of battery usage of 18hours while mine only showed 9 , I immediately thought that my phone was broken or something until a month later I realized that I was getting more than 20 hours of battery usage , when we use a phone for the first 3-5 days ( specially android) we can't expect it to be fully optimized because it's still learning your behavior and phone usage, just by installing a new app your making your phone to "learn to do something new" when I got my s7 edge I didn't expected to have great battery life , I was constantly installing and removing apps , flashing Roms and trying themes and etc. Now after a month later I use my phone on a pretty standard routine , I used package disabled but it only made my phone laggy and slower , so I decided to use my phone on the stock way , I running all stock , ( only disabled the apps that come with the phone that I don't use like power point , Samsung gear and health...) and after I did this I noticed a huge bump on battery life , I went from 12 hour of usage and 4:30-5hours of SOT to 30hours of usage and 8hours of SOT
After installing a custom/stock rom make sure to drain the battery completely just once to calibrate it !
I can never get more than 6 hrs sot.. Gonna follow your tips and write back in a week or so. Thanks for sharing!

Feel free to use package disabler, it was a lifesaver to me with my note 5 but not on the s7 , but other users report that has been really helpful other thing you could try even that the impact will be minimal is using a dark theme ,
Also don't update to the newer firmware if on Exynos. Seems to hit battery life by 25% or more as android system goes from around 5% to 15-20% battery usage.

with newer firmware you mean the may update?
with me it was the other thing around, in the beginning it was quite good but now, its worse. is it because of the bright sunlight or the phone getting hot because it was around 30 degrees almost?
you see...screen on time about 2 hours
most active battery drainer, android itself
Only way for me to get 4 hrs of sot i have to plug in to charge and disconnect before i get to 90 cause then it seems to thing its fully charged and battery meter resets (on battery).

The thing is, I have disabled half of the system already, but it just feels like it's doing even worse than before so I'm leaning back on running stock again.

It didn't work either to me , this is what I think , it may sound stupid but it could be the true cause , I think when you use an app like package disabler to disable things on your phone and then you accidentally touch to open the app or setting disabled the phone will think "what's going on here" why is this disabled? And it maybe tries to access/ open the package again and again causing it to actually drain battery !, You could a cache wipe , it worked for me , I follow all guides to extend battery life using package disabler, custom rom , flashing zips to delete bloatware but none of them worked for me , instead I went all stock ,and after installing the stock rom I did a factory reset and them the cache wipe, it worked flawless to me , the phone now works like a charm , no overheating (maybe I don't feel it because I got a case ) but the point is try to find your own solution , every s7 edge it's unic, maybe a simple reebok on your phone could resolve all of your problems , and a very important thing !!!!! If you flash a rom /kernel make sure you let your battery drain completely just once to calibrate it!
I wiped nothing, stock rom latest APD1 , aod off now but on sometimes , location on, sync on 3 emails, disabled a few things with ez package disabler. Browsed the net for all the time the screen was on, WiFi on while screen of and on for atleast 2 hrs while using line messenger and used Spotify for around 30 to 40 mins. This is sot and battery usage.
I don't know how u manage to get such bad battery life, swear u guys r fu#*ING about with sh%t too much, let it settle.

Great battery life , you can easily achieve 3 days of battery life and 8-9 hours of SOT I guess which is great for you , just consider yourself in the 5% of people that own a phone with no battery issues , I'm happy with my 8hours of SOT and I could achieve 3days like you just by using WiFi, I use LTE because it's faster were I live but remember that there are people so disappointed with their phones because they want to get the most out of their phones and just can't, may I ask if you are amazed with your battery life or do you own other device that beats the s7 on battery ?
I am amazed, it's as good as, if not better than my previous phone the z3, which was running a custom rom and kernel.
I do consider myself lucky to have the phone run so well right out the box.
Also when I said alot r fu#&ng around with their device, I meant roughly the same as you, I didn't mean to imply their problems r not actually there. I meant as u had said, changing roms, removing apps for new, disabling apps, not letting anything settle, wont give good results in battery life.

Holy smoke, 5+ hrs sot in half of battery. I've been trying to get more than 6 hrs for like a month now with different roms and optimizations, not even close..
I hate to be the voice of cynicism, but we do need to stop this stuff somewhere. The original post is utter nonsense. The suggestion that phones 'learn' your behaviour just simply isn’t how kernels work. There's a very small degree of 'learning' but power management is a very reactive process based on exactly what's happening. The only thing new apps change is what processes are running, and the kernel will instantly scale to do what it 'thinks' is right. Some managers will observe processes for a bit longer and react based on that - but we're talking hours at most, NOT days.
The only credit I'd give to this idea (which seems to be all over XDA for some reason) is that the first few days people use their new shiny phone a lot more than usual, and probably also more than they’d think. They also become far more aware of battery life and will even turn on the screen just to check battery life, which will obviously accumulate batery drain - so the bit about using your phone more is certainly true. But anything about Android being some sort of AI Neural Network app learning extraveganza that learns what you do over several days is (for the most (significant) part) wrong.
Think this is just descending into another battery thread and we have one here already

Battery draining fast (first day out of the box)

Hi guys
Just got a Galaxy S7 today, and when I first turned it on it had 61%, I started doing the setup and everything (I was out and on 4G), noticed that the phone's battery drains so fast (like 1% down every 2 minutes or less), by the time I finished the setup it was down to 40% and it was so damn hot.. I let it cool a little bit then I continued installing all my apps and doing all the updates when everything finished it was down to 20%, I said ok maybe I need to update the system software for it to be good, so I charged the device a bit while the software update gets downloaded, updated the phone and left it there for a while charging. Now it's 60% but even then when I use it just for a little bit organizing apps and getting everything ready, it drains fast and gets hot.. I have location disabled, NFC disabled, apps battery optimized, disabled all bloatware using package disabler pro..
Any solution guys? Should I just keep charging it and discharging it for a couple of days and it will get better? I don't understand since from the reviews everyone is saying that the battery life is fantastic.
thank you
Test it out for 2-3 days. If the Problem still exists try a factory reset. Good Luck

Battery life greatly getting worse

Has anyone noticed their battery getting incredibly worse over time? I bought my S7 on release (non edge). And since then, I've noticed that it doesn't last no where near as long. Today, for example I started my day at 7:00am when the battery was 100%. As of 30 minutes ago, the battery reached critically low (5%). From 7am all I did was watch a few videos, facebook, snapchat and then play music. But all the above for not too long.
I've also noticed that once the phone hits the 15% battery (I know due to the notification), that within minutes the battery can be done to 10% or so, without touching it.
I'm more so tempted just to take it back, unless there's an easy fix OR it's a known issue with the current version.
Thanks!

I've definitely noticed this since rooting. Maybe it has something to do with that? Like a ROM you flashed or what not? I'd like some suggestions here as well.

What does the battery stats say is using the most mAh?
Facebook app is a known battery hog
Obviously over time, you'll install different things, and slowly the phone will start using more and more power running background apps
A backup and Factory reset will show if there is a hardware / battery issue, or if it's purely from stuff you've installed over time
Also clearing the caches from recovery could help
yeah ive noticed this too. My usage habits havent changed but my battery life is almost half of what it was when i just got the phone.

Cache has been cleared from recovery, and I don't generally install many apps so since I've bought the phone the apps have stayed the same.
Android system is always on top. Unless of course I spend hours on Facebook.
Might have to factory reset. I've used my phone with the same apps and time since I've bought it, and I'm finding I'm charging it 3x as much.
I think it's a root issue - deep sleep.
After S6 Edge Plus, when you root a samsung phone, it won't go in deep sleep. I believe there's a fix for that.
Have you checked the battery usage stats? It gives you the breakdown on what apps are eating up the battery.
I have had my S7 for about a month and battery is about the same.
Just to update this thread for those that may have a similar issue...the other day I couldn't live with the battery life the way it was. The phone used 50% in several hours where I barely used it.
Decided to completely re-flash with stock (was stock before) as opposed to simply wiping all data. A week in, and the phone's battery life is back to the way it was. I went to bed when it was on 100% (as a test) and woke up 7 hours later with the phone on 94%, with wifi, location and bluetooth on.
Not sure what had caused it to use so much battery previously, but it's back to what it should be and that's all that matters.
hi with my s7 exynos i do 3h screen. i think there is a problem. i bought my s7 one week ago. can anyone help me?
Rooting and installing custom kernels when done right should greatly increase the battery life of your device. This is a well known guide here on XDA for improving battery life for our devices.
That being said, Lithium Ion Batteries hold less charge the more cycles they are put through, its a given fact but as you said your device is relatively new and therefore should not be experiencing this kind of problem. The way I see this is there are 3 possibilities which may be causing the said problem...
1) You have rooted the device and done some modification/s. ( which you haven't done )
2) Your battery is being drained by a service ( Like Oculus or VR ) in fact a number of reddit users complained their S7 was overheating and battery was draining really fast for some reason. Check This page out, It might help you.
3) Battery Defect, you must've gotten a "bad" model, if you haven't tripped KNOX you could try bringing your phone to Samsung and see if they would fix or replace it.
Good luck
I think this has to due to them samsung updates. As far as i know samsung been always doing things like this where they made the OS slow as hell after a while so you gonna get a upgrade sooner but a battery should last 2 years minimal without degrading.

i get like 5 hours screen on time and bout 1 day standby time but i have most bloatware disabled with the package disabler. But if i was you i would contact samsung.
This happens with Samsung updates on every Galaxy phone. It's like a curse. It's unavoidable.

May i ask if the people with these problems use the fast charge? I hearing many bad things bout this so i switched it off and must say the normal charge isn't that slow and if it can keep the battery good for longer then we all should use this.
I turned fast charge off about a week after I got the phone, was making the phone and charger pretty hot for the sake of about 5-10 mins quicker charge
Pointless really, unless you are desperate, only have a few mins spare and need as much power as possible in that short time, and if that's the case, enable it for that one time
Restrict background data on all but the most important apps (phone, text, email), dave power all but the most important apps. Battery life is fine

OP6 Always Awake, Poor Battery Life

Hey guys,
I bought OP6 8/128 version and first, the battery life was ok, I was getting 4-5 hours of sot. Now, I see that battery is discharging in constant rate and something is keeping my phone awake all the time. Firstly I thought it was Instagram when it helped when I force stopped it. Now I'm lost 20 percent overnight and battery stats show, that all the time my device was awake. Cannot see anything suspicious through gsam or better battery stats as I believe the put it under android system. Help anyone?
Did you already do a reboot?

From personal experience, i found that updating OTA was the culprit. To get around this, download the full update from Oneplus and update that way.
Ever since i started doing this, I have not had the battery drain issues i used to have. Also, wipe cache before booting phone after update.

So I should try to do fresh install from OnePlus site? Awake time drops when I clear recent apps, so I believe this is either Instagram or Facebook doing this. Really weird. Even without awake time shown in graph, I got 35% drain in 1h sot and 11h standby, this shouldn't be normal, right?
It's crazy, because I used to have a good battery life

for testing, can you uninstall Instagram and Facebook for 1 day and see how your battery life changes.
I can tell you right now Instagram has a prefetch service which causes close to 1-2 hours of wakelock per day for me. I have root so I can disable it but there's no other way from the app itself.

You can just set the app to not use any background data from within Android. I have it on all that's not important for me.
Loose about 0.3% per hour without any apps or mods on beta 2.

So, the story continues... After following your advice and restricting background data for Instagram the wake up time fixed itself, however battery is still draining. Screenshots attached (facebook and time sensors used??)
I will test every available option and if they won't work, I would consider moving to beta oxygen os. Now I'm on 5.1.11
I am ready to trace this to it's roots for people who will potentially encounter this problem in the future.

It could be your spotty connection. Your awake time is fairly high when the mobile network connection goes south. Can you try using something like 3G instead and see if the awake time goes down? As well as the battery drain?
Naturally 3G uses less battery but if you see a drastic difference then it could be the tower connection you have. When the signal gets worse the modem tries harder and effectively uses more battery trying to stay connected.
Have a look if Facebook is allowed to use unlimited background data, I believe there is a setting for it on 5.1.11 aswell (I'm on beta, its a beast.)
There are many reasons not to install Facebook apps on your phone, and this is one of them.

Background data off both for Facebook and Instagram fixed (at least it seems) the overnight drain issue even with airplane mode on. Last time I lost 20-30%, tonight less than 4-5%
Just when I thought I found what was causing the drain, take a look at this: 20min sot and 20% down in 4.5h
Screens attached, still searching for the issue. Android battery stats show no awake time, but something is definitely draining (app usage insanely high on 80%)

So strange.. I feel we still have 3 options here.. 2 old and one new.
Flash 5.1.11 without wiping anything (you won't loose data so it's just an upgrade)
Flash beta 2 dirty as an upgrade, (you might get device corruptednat boot, press power 2 times and forget about the message) you won't loose any data or apps this way either.
Last option is the least fun, clean install of rom :/. If you ask me, I'd go for beta 2 option, if you wanna run something you know is stable go with 5.1.11.
I didn't run into any issues with beta 2 but some are (I believe user error here..)
Changed my mind.... I have 2 more posible fixes.. (I think)
Hmmm, one more thing I just came to think of is try using SD Maid, now this is just a guess that it will do anything at all..
The other thing is flashing a kernel, something could have happened there after an upgrade or something (just a guess.)
I'm running flash kernel now, it's really good

Thanks for your thoughts, thinking of going to beta 2 since I am on 5.1.11 right now. As for flashing kernel, I've been there with custom roms and kernels with several other phones and in the end most of them (except galaxy s5) were working better on stock ones after a while... However, doesn't rooting void the warranty on OP6?

Beta 2 is really good
48 hours and I'm at 18% with soon 9hrs of screen (usage and SS in battery thread)
As of warranty, no, you will still have full. However this shouldn't have to be done as a "fix" , i was just curious if stock kernel somehow got messed up :s

I would suggest doing a factory reset or uninstall your apps one at a time. Considering it's saying kernel wakelock (could be false positive) I would start go straight to factory reset. If going to Android Pie beta 2 is overall stable and forces a reset anyways, then go ahead and do that instead.
Im just getting 5-6hours SOT on my new op6, is this the normal battery life? Was planning on flashing custom kernels? Any suggestions?

So, I can close this case as SOLVED.
Today, phone was mainly on 4g, doing photos, videos, calls, 4 hours of spotify via bluetooth. 3h50min SOT, 16h standby and still 27% left. Dirty install of Beta 2 fixed it! Thanks for your help!
