[Completed] Nexus 5 battery acting weird - XDA Assist

Boughr a n5 this june.. Was pretty happy with it.. Got quite decent battery life out of it. Around 4.5-5 hrs on a daily basis.. Decided to root the phone 2 months ago.. Unlocked the bootloader using fastboot and flashed cwm.. Then flashed franco kernel.. Got root working and all but battery started draining like crazy.. Got around 2-2.5 hrs sot.. Thought had done something wrong so after a week decided to go back to stock using the 4.4.4 factory images from googles developer website.. Flashed it using fastboot and everything booted up fine.. But battery life didnt really improve.. Still get 2-3hrs sot.. Then installed the 3rd dev preview 2 weeks ago and am now using the offical lollipop rom.. Battery problem never went away.. Any idea why??

So one thing to keep in mind is that battery life can be affected by several things; number of apps installed which also may be running in the background, brightness level, GPS, etc.
So I recommend you download the app " better battery stats, open it and then let it run over night.
The app should give you info on what's going on.
If you're still stuck, open the app, go to share and you can get a log.
Post that log in this thread and politely ask if someone can explain it.

Thanks for the quick response.. I totally get ur point.. Correct me if I'm wrong.. But aren't wakelocks things which run in the background and prevent it from going to sleep?.. In that case i still don't understand y i can't seem to get a good sot when using the phone continuously.. I mean if i browse on chrome continuously without a break.. Battery still last about 2.5 hrs.. Also currently I'm running a minimal amount of apps as compared to the initial period with the good battery and nothing new.. I have a feeling that i might have messed something up during flashing.. Is that even possible??.. Anyway.. Ill try getting on that better battey status too

battery life is TERRIBLE on AOKP!

I was on GB and had amazing battery life!
Just flashed AOKP milestone 6 and I can can't watch
The battery drain.
I've read forums and not much help.
I DL better battery but don't really know how to use.
I tried formatting battery stats.
Any solutions?
I am having the same issue. I am going yo try cMIUI. what are you getting for battery life?
Sent from my SGH-T959V using xda premium
Are y'all sure it's not just because you're doing lots of stuff with your phone right now, having just flashed a new ROM?
If it's an extreme amount of battery drain, it might be some leftovers from whatever you had last. You could try a factory reset and then see how stock AOKP handles battery drain.
I know I don't get battery life as good as I did with Octane, but a big part of that is because I've been flashing the new AOKP builds every couple of days, so things don't get a chance to settle down. (Granted, battery life still isn't as good as when I just flashed Octane.)
There is tons of things regarding this very issue in the AOKP q & a thread. Please use the search this thread button in that thread. Ive typed a response atleast four times today. And atleast four yesterday and more the day before and the day before that. NOt trying to be a ****, but Im tired of typing and responding. If you cant be bothered to read the thread or search I cant be bothered to respond anymore.
Not sure for sure.
But I get 5-6 hours on full charge with medium use(text. Instagram. Web.)
How can I get exact info?
Read the AOKP Q&A, yes, the whole thing
Read the OP's instructions on the AOKP dev thread
Read the thread on Bettter Battery Stats
Listen to what people say about battery use
Think about what you have done and what to try next
Do
Rinse
Repeat
Ask yourself "Why am I flashing ICS at all?" -- ICS in the SGS4G is still very much in development.
I don't think you realize how unreasonable it is to ask someone to read that entire Q&A. I've followed the thread from its beginning, and there's no real solution to the battery issue being described here. You'd only be wasting everyone's time who took your advice. I've also read all of OP's instructions in the AOKP dev thread, and have even tried the gremlin remover prior to flashing AOKP. This does not solve the battery issue. You're seeming to imply that the battery issue is the user's fault, and I think that's not even remotely close to the truth. I've done multiple flashes, each time trying something different, to see if I did anything to cause the horrible battery in AOKP, and they all concluded the same way. With that said, we need to actually try to fix this, instead of sending people in circles and pretending to fix it.
First of I dont have battery issues at all with AOKP I am a User a very grateful user (thx 2 our devs). Just factory reset, after that wipe cache, system, everything except your sd card of course) and the flash your rom. Its really a matter of re-assuring everything is wiped. Also leave your phone alone for awhile I left mine around 2 hrs alone, while the rom settles.

Go to the Gremlin Remover dev thread, and try steps 1-3. If you are STILL having exaggerated battery loss, try using gremlin remover it'self. If you still have problems, after making it back to your preferred rom, just put the phone down for a while.

Some of us are getting good-very good battery life, and some of us are not - using the same exact ROM. I don't know what that tells you, but what it tells me is that it *is* likely to be a user issue.
People complain about battery life, but they hardly ever talk about the total time they are using it (including fiddling around with it), what programs they have used or have installed, and how they are restoring after they flash (i.e., if there is a chance they are bringing along bad stuff from a previous incarnation of the phone). More information about these things and - yes - doing tedious things like the process of elimination might be enlightening here.

Ya know when I first came here I said something similar. But Ive kept up with these threads now and I know for a fact battery life issues have been discussed to a point that the devs are ready to pack up and leave. Nobody wants to read or even search. Instead the battery life issues are blamed on the shotty coding of the people building these roms. If you are getting bad battery life it is plain and simple a user error. Unless you can provide logs stating otherwise then just drop it try what is being suggested or go back to stock roms. Install all the apps you need to customize the phone like it is on the ics variants and then report back here. I garandamntee you will have ****ty battery life.
These custom roms have so much stuff added to them that is hard coded in for customization that its not going to have super battery life like a unbloated stock rom. But you cant expect it to. A good comparision was made earlier in another thread. Would you expect to get 8 hours out of a laptop battery?
I always tell people to make sure to completely drain the battery....all the way until it shuts off, because mine will sometimes stay at 1% for nearly 2 hours.
Seems like it doesn't know its own scale until you do that a few times.
Also never ever ever restart this phone while having it plugged in or turn it on while plugged in.
Let me give you the scenario, it will be charging let's say around 50% and then after restart while plugged in right around 75-80% and that little act took me a long time to recalibrate my battery and I'm not talking about deleting the battery stats, I don't delete battery stats anymore at all (read an article from Google saying its pointless)
All that said I'm a very heavy user, and I like a bright screen and I'm getting (what I would consider) good battery life. But I have a 3500mah so its never too bad for me
Hope this helps someone

I'm on AOKP, and my battery life is GREAT. There are plenty of steps and tips mentioned here to find out what your battery problem is.
I would like to see screen shots of the battery usage of people that have crappy battery.
From home hit menu>settings>scroll down a bit to battery.
Take two screenshots one of the initial screen, then touch the graph at the top and take one of that screen.
I keep hearing battery life is horrible I only get 4 hours, please fix this, hows battery life..blah blah blah battery. Yet nobody will drop usage stats, logs of a days use, offer anything but i use my phone moderately. I call bull**** on that, How many texts do you get/send in a day? How long are you on the phone making calls? Do you live in a poor service area? Give some info.
On a average day I get about 50 texts, might make a 20 minute call, use tapatalk a half dozen times, and use tweetcaster and flipboard a dozen times. I can get 12-15 hours out of a full charge. To me that is light to moderate use. I get crappy data where Im at right now so Im on wifi A LOT. When Im actually using t-mo data more I can get closer to 18 hours out of a charge
People if your having problems with battery life stop rebooting the phone a hundred times a day. Stop shutting off all the radios thinking it will help. use the dang phone like it was meant to be used. None of the code is optimized for people to shut radios off and turn the phone into a dumbphone. You are making it worse by shutting these things down and turning them back on. It takes power to properly shut off bt, wifi, data. Next time you do watch the radio will not just instantly shut down. It has to power off all the service that is using it and then power down. Otherwise you would be here *****ing about tons of force closes.
I get about 17hours on my phone and i have a stock battery. I use all the extras PROVIDED TO US BY THE DEV like turn off wifi/date off or to 2g while phone screen is off. Auto bright and all the extras.

I usually get 14-17 hrs doing the same. No battery issues. If you leave data/wifi on all day and are constantly checking email, Twitter, and Facebook what do you expect? Battery is fine.

How much time do you spend on "screen"?
My phone usually drains 10% each 5hours of sleeping (air plane mode). Is that normal? I can get around 3hours of web surfing, which is less than it was on SCOM (4hours).

[Q] Question about VRBLK1 leak

I flashed the VRBLK1 build a few days ago with the Rom Manager app and everything seems to work great except for the battery life, even with 4g turned off with the Phone Info app. Just sitting on standby drains about 3-5% of the battery per hour. I am running full stock, unbloated, rooted & unlocked. Is any one else experiencing this with this build? Is there a better kernel for battery usage or a rom that has a few customization's to run better without getting into a fully cutom rom? I'm probably one of a few but I actually like touchwiz for the most part. Also I was searching around and found a link off of droid_life.com and it shows the newest leak being VRBLK3. Any info on that build? I searched here but couldn't find anything for that build. I tend to only trust downloads and such from xda. Never had a problem with what you guys put out!
Well I found the newest leak (VRBLK3) on here and flashed that with Odin and rooted and unlocked bootloader. But my battery still seems to be draining way to quick even when the phone is sleeping. Any suggestions on getting better battery life. Maybe a bad battery? Or am I just delusional in how long I think a battery should last?
I see a lot of posts about mediaserver killing the battery, have you checked that?
Sent from my SCH-I535 using xda app-developers app
When I check battery usage the top three are Android System 51%, Screen 15% and Media 7%. Is the Media what you are referring to with media server?
battery life my be ****ty on the first charge cycle... then you should see a big improvement once media server settles down.
Yeah let it settle. After every newly flashed Rom, the phone needs to "organize" all the media on the device. Once that is done, phone should be back to normal. This process could take a while, depending on how much media is present.
Sorry I haven't replied in several days, went out of town and dint check the forum. Thanks for the advice! My battery is lasting a lot longer now, I am easily going all day depending on how much I use 4G and such. I guess what it needed was time for the media server to settle like you guys said. Thanks again for the advice!

Don't worry about battery life until 2 week after !!!!

Hi everyone , I'm new in the community but I already found that this is one of the best phone forums online , normally you come here for help because you have a problem right ? But today I'm just here to give an advice, I notice that many people complain about the battery life on their new phones , I had the same issue with my note 5 , I saw a video on YouTube and the phone showed an estimation of battery usage of 18hours while mine only showed 9 , I immediately thought that my phone was broken or something until a month later I realized that I was getting more than 20 hours of battery usage , when we use a phone for the first 3-5 days ( specially android) we can't expect it to be fully optimized because it's still learning your behavior and phone usage, just by installing a new app your making your phone to "learn to do something new" when I got my s7 edge I didn't expected to have great battery life , I was constantly installing and removing apps , flashing Roms and trying themes and etc. Now after a month later I use my phone on a pretty standard routine , I used package disabled but it only made my phone laggy and slower , so I decided to use my phone on the stock way , I running all stock , ( only disabled the apps that come with the phone that I don't use like power point , Samsung gear and health...) and after I did this I noticed a huge bump on battery life , I went from 12 hour of usage and 4:30-5hours of SOT to 30hours of usage and 8hours of SOT
After installing a custom/stock rom make sure to drain the battery completely just once to calibrate it !
I can never get more than 6 hrs sot.. Gonna follow your tips and write back in a week or so. Thanks for sharing!

Feel free to use package disabler, it was a lifesaver to me with my note 5 but not on the s7 , but other users report that has been really helpful other thing you could try even that the impact will be minimal is using a dark theme ,
Also don't update to the newer firmware if on Exynos. Seems to hit battery life by 25% or more as android system goes from around 5% to 15-20% battery usage.

with newer firmware you mean the may update?
with me it was the other thing around, in the beginning it was quite good but now, its worse. is it because of the bright sunlight or the phone getting hot because it was around 30 degrees almost?
you see...screen on time about 2 hours
most active battery drainer, android itself
Only way for me to get 4 hrs of sot i have to plug in to charge and disconnect before i get to 90 cause then it seems to thing its fully charged and battery meter resets (on battery).

It didn't work either to me , this is what I think , it may sound stupid but it could be the true cause , I think when you use an app like package disabler to disable things on your phone and then you accidentally touch to open the app or setting disabled the phone will think "what's going on here" why is this disabled? And it maybe tries to access/ open the package again and again causing it to actually drain battery !, You could a cache wipe , it worked for me , I follow all guides to extend battery life using package disabler, custom rom , flashing zips to delete bloatware but none of them worked for me , instead I went all stock ,and after installing the stock rom I did a factory reset and them the cache wipe, it worked flawless to me , the phone now works like a charm , no overheating (maybe I don't feel it because I got a case ) but the point is try to find your own solution , every s7 edge it's unic, maybe a simple reebok on your phone could resolve all of your problems , and a very important thing !!!!! If you flash a rom /kernel make sure you let your battery drain completely just once to calibrate it!
I wiped nothing, stock rom latest APD1 , aod off now but on sometimes , location on, sync on 3 emails, disabled a few things with ez package disabler. Browsed the net for all the time the screen was on, WiFi on while screen of and on for atleast 2 hrs while using line messenger and used Spotify for around 30 to 40 mins. This is sot and battery usage.

Great battery life , you can easily achieve 3 days of battery life and 8-9 hours of SOT I guess which is great for you , just consider yourself in the 5% of people that own a phone with no battery issues , I'm happy with my 8hours of SOT and I could achieve 3days like you just by using WiFi, I use LTE because it's faster were I live but remember that there are people so disappointed with their phones because they want to get the most out of their phones and just can't, may I ask if you are amazed with your battery life or do you own other device that beats the s7 on battery ?
I am amazed, it's as good as, if not better than my previous phone the z3, which was running a custom rom and kernel.
I do consider myself lucky to have the phone run so well right out the box.
Also when I said alot r fu#&ng around with their device, I meant roughly the same as you, I didn't mean to imply their problems r not actually there. I meant as u had said, changing roms, removing apps for new, disabling apps, not letting anything settle, wont give good results in battery life.

Holy smoke, 5+ hrs sot in half of battery. I've been trying to get more than 6 hrs for like a month now with different roms and optimizations, not even close..
I hate to be the voice of cynicism, but we do need to stop this stuff somewhere. The original post is utter nonsense. The suggestion that phones 'learn' your behaviour just simply isn’t how kernels work. There's a very small degree of 'learning' but power management is a very reactive process based on exactly what's happening. The only thing new apps change is what processes are running, and the kernel will instantly scale to do what it 'thinks' is right. Some managers will observe processes for a bit longer and react based on that - but we're talking hours at most, NOT days.
The only credit I'd give to this idea (which seems to be all over XDA for some reason) is that the first few days people use their new shiny phone a lot more than usual, and probably also more than they’d think. They also become far more aware of battery life and will even turn on the screen just to check battery life, which will obviously accumulate batery drain - so the bit about using your phone more is certainly true. But anything about Android being some sort of AI Neural Network app learning extraveganza that learns what you do over several days is (for the most (significant) part) wrong.
Think this is just descending into another battery thread and we have one here already

Rapid battery drain and weird GSam results! :(

Hey everyone,
It's been a while since I posted on the forum since although I wasn't overly happy with my battery life, it wasn't giving me too many problems. However the last couple of days have been a nightmare! For the record, my phone is not rooted.
I've attached some screen shots which I took on the fly, but I've been getting some really weird results from GSam. Since the 500% result I've reset the cache and the other images are what the battery is currently using.
However since its draining so fast I can barely see myself able to go anywhere without a charger!
I usually leave wifi and 4g off overnight anyway so when I woke up earlier I was surprised to see it with a 10% drain from doing absolutely nothing. I had to put it into power saving mode last night as I needed my alarm for the morning and was worried the phone would drain too quickly.
As far as I can tell the phone is sometimes entering deep sleep and sometimes not. It wasn't at all last night and isn't currently either. I really have no idea what the problem is and wanted to feel out some ideas before I factory reset the phone for the second time. I kind of wanted to avoid it if poss but am beginning to think it might be the only option. I'm also now worried there's something wrong with the battery
Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Try debloating stock rom, use free debloater from XDA (You dont need root to use it). I've uploaded my list of debloated apps as reference, double check what You'r using and if You'r not sure what app does what try google-ing it.
You can also try disabling stock Chrome browser and install Chrome Beta (I've been using it for few years and never had any problems with it)
Also beware of disabling Samsung Store etc. as some members of XDA pointed that after disabling it, it won't work untill factory reset.
Check my previous posts, I've uploaded screenshots of my battery life with debloated rom from this list.
Does it work on Mac? I don't have a Windows computer. I've not done this sort of thing before, is it easy to do? :/
I'll look up chrome beta but I don't know if it's anything to do with that since it's pretty bad even when I'm not using anything. I wish I could tell what was rinsing my phone battery. Maybe I should attempt to root it after all.

OP6 Always Awake, Poor Battery Life

Hey guys,
I bought OP6 8/128 version and first, the battery life was ok, I was getting 4-5 hours of sot. Now, I see that battery is discharging in constant rate and something is keeping my phone awake all the time. Firstly I thought it was Instagram when it helped when I force stopped it. Now I'm lost 20 percent overnight and battery stats show, that all the time my device was awake. Cannot see anything suspicious through gsam or better battery stats as I believe the put it under android system. Help anyone?
Did you already do a reboot?

From personal experience, i found that updating OTA was the culprit. To get around this, download the full update from Oneplus and update that way.
Ever since i started doing this, I have not had the battery drain issues i used to have. Also, wipe cache before booting phone after update.

So I should try to do fresh install from OnePlus site? Awake time drops when I clear recent apps, so I believe this is either Instagram or Facebook doing this. Really weird. Even without awake time shown in graph, I got 35% drain in 1h sot and 11h standby, this shouldn't be normal, right?
It's crazy, because I used to have a good battery life

for testing, can you uninstall Instagram and Facebook for 1 day and see how your battery life changes.
I can tell you right now Instagram has a prefetch service which causes close to 1-2 hours of wakelock per day for me. I have root so I can disable it but there's no other way from the app itself.

You can just set the app to not use any background data from within Android. I have it on all that's not important for me.
Loose about 0.3% per hour without any apps or mods on beta 2.

So, the story continues... After following your advice and restricting background data for Instagram the wake up time fixed itself, however battery is still draining. Screenshots attached (facebook and time sensors used??)
I will test every available option and if they won't work, I would consider moving to beta oxygen os. Now I'm on 5.1.11
I am ready to trace this to it's roots for people who will potentially encounter this problem in the future.

It could be your spotty connection. Your awake time is fairly high when the mobile network connection goes south. Can you try using something like 3G instead and see if the awake time goes down? As well as the battery drain?
Naturally 3G uses less battery but if you see a drastic difference then it could be the tower connection you have. When the signal gets worse the modem tries harder and effectively uses more battery trying to stay connected.
Have a look if Facebook is allowed to use unlimited background data, I believe there is a setting for it on 5.1.11 aswell (I'm on beta, its a beast.)
There are many reasons not to install Facebook apps on your phone, and this is one of them.

Background data off both for Facebook and Instagram fixed (at least it seems) the overnight drain issue even with airplane mode on. Last time I lost 20-30%, tonight less than 4-5%
Just when I thought I found what was causing the drain, take a look at this: 20min sot and 20% down in 4.5h
Screens attached, still searching for the issue. Android battery stats show no awake time, but something is definitely draining (app usage insanely high on 80%)

So strange.. I feel we still have 3 options here.. 2 old and one new.
Flash 5.1.11 without wiping anything (you won't loose data so it's just an upgrade)
Flash beta 2 dirty as an upgrade, (you might get device corruptednat boot, press power 2 times and forget about the message) you won't loose any data or apps this way either.
Last option is the least fun, clean install of rom :/. If you ask me, I'd go for beta 2 option, if you wanna run something you know is stable go with 5.1.11.
I didn't run into any issues with beta 2 but some are (I believe user error here..)
Changed my mind.... I have 2 more posible fixes.. (I think)
Hmmm, one more thing I just came to think of is try using SD Maid, now this is just a guess that it will do anything at all..
The other thing is flashing a kernel, something could have happened there after an upgrade or something (just a guess.)
I'm running flash kernel now, it's really good

Thanks for your thoughts, thinking of going to beta 2 since I am on 5.1.11 right now. As for flashing kernel, I've been there with custom roms and kernels with several other phones and in the end most of them (except galaxy s5) were working better on stock ones after a while... However, doesn't rooting void the warranty on OP6?

Beta 2 is really good
48 hours and I'm at 18% with soon 9hrs of screen (usage and SS in battery thread)
As of warranty, no, you will still have full. However this shouldn't have to be done as a "fix" , i was just curious if stock kernel somehow got messed up :s

I would suggest doing a factory reset or uninstall your apps one at a time. Considering it's saying kernel wakelock (could be false positive) I would start go straight to factory reset. If going to Android Pie beta 2 is overall stable and forces a reset anyways, then go ahead and do that instead.
Im just getting 5-6hours SOT on my new op6, is this the normal battery life? Was planning on flashing custom kernels? Any suggestions?

So, I can close this case as SOLVED.
Today, phone was mainly on 4g, doing photos, videos, calls, 4 hours of spotify via bluetooth. 3h50min SOT, 16h standby and still 27% left. Dirty install of Beta 2 fixed it! Thanks for your help!
