My wife works for US Cellular and is having a complete fit about me updating my phone and rooting it !!!! She is afraid of it being bricked or having some issue with it down the road that i would have to send it out and it having to be worked on and DATA TECH seeing that it has done.. has there been any issues with the froyo update bricking phones i've looked and looked and not seen that it has.. also rolling it back to stock hasnt had and issues either has it ...
None that I know about. Besides you can always do an odin restore to 2.1 and it will be like it just came out of the box.

I work for US Cellular. This phone is my work phone, and I develop on it. I'm 99.9% positive that you cannot brick these phones by rooting and updating them, or flashing anything to them for that matter. As long as you follow directions you should be fine. When using Odin, don't flash anything to the Phone portion. Only flash to the Pit and PDA portions. Also, never flash anything that isn't for the Mesmerize. I don't care that other people have not had problems with it, It's not worth the risk to the average person. Also, read everything that you can and ask questions.
Come hang out in the irc room with us if you need anything.
Thank you...so far froyo is working well haven't rooted yet.. What are the benifits to rooting?

Rooting allows you the ability to get to the root directory, run apps that you couldn't run before, and other features that you normally would have. It's a hand thing to do.
Rooting shouldn't brick your phone.

Yes after rooting you can download from the market adfree that will remove most ads. The what I like to use is titanium backup to remove or freeze the bloatware. By freezing it is removes it from the app drawer. But is still on the phone encase you need it later say for warrenty. But now with the Odin files for our phones you can delete the bloat and do a resort in you must warrenty it.

I work for US Cellular and I use my work phone for rooting, development, and h4xing. I once messed up a flash when it first came out(no odin yet) and sent it into samsung directly and they reflashed it for me.

So I assumed you were typing it different every time. Then I realized you were probably using the xda app since it said "Sent from my .. ..." haha

Adfree is awesome,
And another really good way to get rid of bloat is to use the pick'n'pack roms. All the instructions are on the post in the android dev section.
And rooting/ flashing shouldn't be frowned upon by a lot of people at us cell / samsung- a lot of those are people that have a passion for phones and do the same thing

I just purchased this phone two days ago, I'm starting to have second thoughts about it, with the constant freezing, not being able to manually take the battery out during a system freeze, and the constant overheating. I'm not a newb or a rookie, but ive read plenty of postings and threads telling me about a custom recovery.
I tried installing twr through odin...3 times. Then i tried twice with the flashify, rashr, rom manager, twrm apk's. To no avail. Im fully rooted just having a hell of a time strappin a recovery on. Any suggestions? And this bloatware is smothering me on this phone. Haha!
I guess i should probably throw it out tbere i have a used and abused Verizon s6 G920V. Poor thing has been softbricked 2 times already.
You can with Tmobile or Sprint, but Verizon is a locked bootloader...
I unlocked my bootloader through terminal emulator. No problem with that, just need a dang recovery and fast.
I knew i shouldn't have purchased a phone that was just welcomed into the world just recently. Where's all the beta testers and genius xda folk when you need em?
You didnt unlock your bootloader, it hasn't even been achieved yet. So there is no recovery made for the Verizon or att Galaxy s6. Be very careful with what you messing with before you fully brick your phone. The only thing we can have now is root and a couple roms that can be flashed with Flashfire

I never used an unlock code to unlock the bootloader, but I unlocked it somehow. I also unlocked the bootloader to my straight talk s3 and there aren't even codes for them yet. Anyway, Ill just stick with plain old root for now, and thanks for the concern about bricking, Im a pro when it comes to avoiding a hardbrick, given the exception of one phone and i knew what i did wrong.
The world is listening how you unlocked the bootloader on a Verizon Galaxy S6.

As the saying goes, "the squeaky wheel gets the grease," right? I believe if enough of us email Big Sammy about our discrepancy with these locked bootloaders, perhaps we will get some sort of reply? Even if the answer is a no, wouldn't that be better than false hope? I posted the email address in another board yesterday and felt it needed it's own thread. So here goes: [email protected]
I called Samsung four times yesterday, and on the fourth try, successfully got escalated to a level two technical support agent. He, and the other agents I had the pleasure of speaking to, had no information about future updates, bootloaders, or anything pertaining to root. BUT he did say I could email my complaint to Samsungs President. He stated that as a user who typically gains root on his devices, he understood where I was coming from. I asked what phones he has and he replied (paraphrased) "a galaxy S5 international, rooted and an ASUS device, also rooted,". I think Samsung needs to know that they've killed all potential development on a spectacular device and, in turn, have lost loyal customers because of it.

I can't say I blame you. I've noticed that a majority of known developers are leaving for the HTC. I may follow suit once my term is up on my S7. So sad to see such a great device collapse into itself like this. Despite its shortcomings, I really enjoy my S7. However, bloatware, the inability to speed up the device and manage other root privileges is seriously ruining my experience.

Question. isn't Android 6.0 to blame for a lot of the new security features ? aren't the locked bootloaders , to secure all the " PAY " features in these new phones ?
just a newbie question ps I hate my HTC M9 and it is also locked on boot lader has S-ON too
I emailed the " sunshine" crew about removing the S=ON so far no one has contacted me, and I gave the same email I use in here.
since I WILL NEVER put my credit card info into the phone , I could care less if after rooting a phone I get some sort of virus that might steal my contacts , who cares .
sure would like to know what you will develop on HTC 6.0 that you can't on a S7 running 6.0 or 6.0.1 Android OS?
thanks for putting up . old **** here

You go to the HTC site to unlock your bootloader (free).
You use PayPal to pay for sunshine unlock, they don't get your credit card number. Sunshine crew is very reputable, they gave me S-off on my M9
Well if everyone has given up on the Qualcomm version of the S7, then there is no need for this thread. I've seen quite a bit of activity in the Exynos variant threads. Has anyone checked to see if tmobile can be run on it? I'd fork out the cash for one if it were a smart move.

You guys think the S8 will get root?
Sent from my LG-H872 using Tapatalk
Probably only exynos and after sometime maybe the sd835 version
Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
I thought dirty cow made all phones easier to root? I have to have Arise.
I did read they had locked the bootloader so rooting and custom roms would be a problem. But that might only be for the snapdragon ones. I will need to find out what the situation is because if I can't get my custom roms on it and have things like xposed then I'm simply not interested in it. Luckily I'm in the UK so maybe the exynos version will be ok.
I am also wondering whether the S8 and S8+ use the same bootloader? If they do then the phones are effectively identical in terms of hardware AND software and roms should work on either device?
Although with the price, the crappy battery, and the dishonest way they have seemingly put out battery life numbers which are based on running it at 1080 and NOT its native 1440, simply so they can get a similar comparison to the S7 (which WAS running at 1440), I am wondering whether I should even bother. Although I am not sure what else there is out there. Pixel is too expensive considering it uses an old chipset, the G6 is a bit on the weak side with the chipset again, I havent really looked at the Sony but I'm not really a fan of Sony in general.

I'm guessing that once the devices are released we'll have more options, however, if the devices aren't out yet, how does this purport to work?
As a Verizon user I've learned to not even ask about root or look forward to it. And you know what. I'm ok with that.
Without unlocked bootloader, root and ready to install custom AOSP Rom with xposed, I do not need a new phone.
At that point there are absolutely no reasons to downgrade my Nexus 6.
I really like the features that offer Galaxy s8 plus but software is over 60% of any device.

I agree, as devices and the OS get polished more and more over the iterations, there is less realistic every-day need to root each time.
That said, and like most of Android power users (xda?), I miss deep customizations like those on top of Xposed, plus one key tool that I have gotten used to live with: GMD GestureControl (control the system via finger gestures)... Plus Titanium Backup as well
I'm sure someone will leak a eng.kernel for the US SD835 models, that's has happened with the S7 and S7e. That will allow root for us, takes a little more work to get it running good as the eng.kernels are just meant for development and unlocking devices so the kernel CPU settings are all messed up.

To all the people who are talking about Xposed here: you do realize that Xposed for nougat isn't out yet right? And those devices ship with nougat so unless someone makes a marshmallow rom you aren't going to have xposed.
That may be a deal breaker, but it's not Samsung's fault.

There are no custom roms for the S7 USA variants. It's not possible with a locked bootloader. We only have a few modified stock roms. I'm currently rooted and waiting for Xposed so I can finally have some decent performance and battery life.

I'm on an unlocked G930T on AT&T on Nougat and really have not found a reason strong enough to go through the rooting process. The only thing that pushes my buttons is that I can't use TB and can't kill some of the old TMO apps completely. But the phone is speedy, gets me through the day without a charge, and has resources available. I've got a theme I like and have most things white on dark which I like better.
So until root becomes extremely easy and reliable, I'm okay with what I've got.
Hi I'm also on an unlocked version of TMobile using ATT. Are you doing anything specific for better battery life? I went to sleep at 100% and woke up with 87%. I have disable those that can be, I'm on Nougat as well and haven't installed too many apps yet.

Not really, just disabled everything I'm not using. And I use the device maintenance to optimize and clear memory every now and then. And I try not to leave the screen on, etc. The usual stuff. I get a day with no issues. I bought some extra wireless fast chargers on eBay and use them if necessary but really feel like I wasted my money because I just set it on the charger at night and it normally goes all day. But I'm not a real heavy phone user. That's part of it.
Sorry I can't be of more help.
Buy Package Disabler Pro and disable all of the bloatware that comes with stock plus any other apps you feel like, my phone is flawless...
The only thing I miss about being rooted is Viper4Android, wish I could have that on stock.

Packaged Disabler Pro will stop system apps without root? How does it do that?

I have no idea how, but it totally does.. It color coordinates system apps, user added apps and even known bloatware apps, making it easy to decide what to stop.
It's designed specifically for Samsung phones, and is the first app I install since I don't have root anymore.
Worth every penny.
Well from TMo you can get s7 edge for $480 or the flat s7 for $560? On the edge, they have fixed the palm rejection at lease on the coral blue.

Where are all the custom roms at? I only see 2 in the rom thread. Are the S7 & S7edge roms compatible?
Thanks..

Well that's weird. I bought it, tried to install it, and it says I'm rooted or there's some other issue and won't install. Obviously I'm not rooted so I don't know what's up.
After reading some of the later reviews there are many others with the same issue. I'm emailing them to see if there is any resolution.
You might want to try your app to see if it's still working correctly.

Totally jinxed me..
I haven't opened the app in months because, why? It just works..
As soon as I open it to check, the license check failed and all my frozen apps reappeared.
Now I can't get it to reactivate, it seems many people are having this problem since the upgrade to Nougat.
SUCKS... Why did I help you hahahahaha.. really though, it sucks. Hopefully they fix it, I'll leave Samsung if not.
I did find this in another thread.. Try it out.
There's a link on the 4th post, it works and I'll use that until the current version of Package Disabler Pro is fixed or updated.

I emailed them the evening I tried to install it and they sent a couple of suggestions. None of them worked so I let them know. They sent another email a couple of hours later and said "try it again" and this time is did work. So they fixed something.
Anyway, thanks. And sorry for jinxing you! But it's not all bad news. I ran your Thanks count up to double digits!
FWIW, I'm a long-time user of BK Package Disabler Pro. For me, it continued working both during the Nougat beta period and since installation of the final version.

Strange. I wonder why it quit working for so many people. They need to fix it for everybody though because their rating on play store is going down quickly.
