Can I Unlock Wifi Hotspot/Tethering on Cricket Samsung Galaxy S7? - Samsung Galaxy S7 Questions and Answers

I'm trying to unlock the Hotspot on my Samsung Galaxy S7 Cricket. I can't find any guides; there are several for the Sprint variant, but I can't find any for Cricket and the method doesn't seem the same.
I bought my phone retail for sticker price - I own it and no goofy contracts. Cricket wants to charge me $10/month for a hotspot, which is ridiculous - I'm already paying for my plan and paying for my data; I'm not going to pay for it again. I had tethering on my HTC One under the same Cricket plan, also without paying extra.
Haven't rooted yet, but I will do so if it's required to get Hotspot working - but I can't find any guides, even with a rooted phone.
Any help? Thanks in advance.

Should have bought the tmobile unlocked version, works on my tmobile note 4.. all I did was buy it unlocked from swappa, works very well... you will have to root it, not sure u can with the cricket model.. what's the model number on the phone? Always wondered where there got there phones from

If you can't find a tutorial try using Foxfi from the play store.

Foxfi and Pdanet+ both said "carrier disabled" and wouldn't work. But wifi hotspot worked with my old phone on the same network so it's definitely possible

That's odd, I'm on Verizon, I would assume they could block it before cricket could and mine works flawlessly. Are you sure you're setting it up right?

I have tried FoxFi, Wifi Tether Router, and swapping TetheringAutomation for a modded Tethering Provisions and nothing is working. I'm obviously rooted and on T-mobile. Any info would be nice

Check with your forums for the T-Mobile S7, I know they have quite a few tutorials in there for you.

Kind of an unorthodox way but here it is. 1st - make a new apn with the following settings.
Name: whatever you want
Apn: ndo
Proxy: proxy.cricketwireless.net
Port: 80
MMSC: http://mmsc.aiowireless.net
MULTIMEDIA MESSAGE PROXY: proxy.aiowireless.net
MULTIMEDIA MESSAGE PORT: 80
MCC: 310
MNC: 150
APN TYPE: default,mms,hipri,supl,fota
The rest leave blank and save it.
2nd now select the new apn you just created and wait for it to connect. Once it does go back into hotspot and turn it on. It should provision now(allowing you use hotspot).
3rd go back to your apn's and Re select your original apn(while the hotspot is active). Should be good to go.

To give a taste. Although it ain't consistant it's still a work in progress. This was done doing a speedtest from another device connected to the hotspot.

Worked for me with Cricket Wireless and an unlocked AT&T SM-G930A. At least I've got hotspot- which is great. The trick is that you have to switch APN's every time you want to enable hotspot, then switch back to actually use the Internet. (update 3: I'm not 100% sure you have to switch back. I'm still testing.)
UPDATE: It only works for about 10 minutes, then shuts off by some daemon or another. AGH this is frustrating!
UPDATE 2: It appears that it only shuts down if no devices are connected. I have it up and running for quite a while now (over 1/2 hour). My Nexus 5 had given me no surprises on this; it just worked (using my exact same Cricket account and phone number).
UPDATE 3: After 4 hours of ping'ing Google, I can say that it's reliable and it stays up. Furthermore, it works on both the original APN and the one recommended here. However the cellphone will not work with the new APN. Switching between APNs seems to incur only a 3 second outage on my hotspot connection, and then it continues on, pretty as you please.
Not so great is that I've had Google Nexii up until this week, and this is my first time bumping into this bull****. I never even knew it existed! What a horrible business practice. This stuff should be illegal. I am paying for 5GB of data. How I download that data is my business. Hopefully they won't somehow munge my system and take this away. If they do, I'll go to T-Mobile or something. Not because they're better, just because these carriers should know that if they screw a happy customer, that customer will leave for elsewhere.
</rant> But thanks, enigma!!! You've done a great service to your country.

Sensation 3G

Hi guys!
I bought my Sensation from Vodafone, Italy. It was unlocked, but branded. The problem is, Im using the phone in Romania and neither before, nor after debranding it, I am not able to receive 3G signal. Please help!
Have you checked you have the APN's for your mobile network?
Thanls 4 answering dude!
I don't have a data plan, but I know that 3G signal should be displayed regardless of this. I have debranded it and installed this stock ROM: RUU_Pyramid_HTC_Europe_1.45.401.2_Radio_10.56.9035.00U_10.14.9035.01_M_release_208857_signed
Does that U I have bolded has anything to do with the signal?
No, I don't think so. You should get 3G regardless of what radio version you have.
Check you have the correct APN set up via this: http://www.htc.com/help/uk/howto_iframe.aspx?id=52432&type=1&p_id=399
It should be something like Vodafone PAYG WAP or T-Mobile Contract WAP.
I don't have a data plan. It should still display 3G, event without a data plan, right? What could it be?
I assume you have a SIM card inserted? If so, what network is the SIM card?
What network? Like, what provider? Cosmote Romania.
And my HTC is a Z710e model.

Yep, that. You need an APN to connect to the 3G network.
Please try follow these instructions and then reboot:
- Press Main
- Select Settings
- Select Wireless and Networks
- Select Mobile Networks
- Select Access point Names
- Delete all APN's in this section.
- Press Menu
- Press New APN
- Enter the follow settings one for General Data . The other for MMS

I'm not sure if it would have helped, cause in order to connect to 3G I don't only need to set my phone, but to be allowed to use the network, too, which is done by the provider.
My other phone didn';t need an APN in order to receive and display the 3G sign.
Incorrect settings...
Maybe I did something wrong, assuming that I don't need to have activated a data plan.
Ididn't really understand the last line "Enter the follow settings one for General Data . The other for MMS". Where do I make this modifications. I have created an access point as in your example, but how about the MMS one?
Thanks for helping dude, I really appreciate this!
Bottom line: without a valid APN, the phone isn't able to connect on 3G (like voice and video call?)

I see!
The instructions were taken off this website: http://www.unlockit.co.nz/mobilesettings/settings.php?id=153
I didn't think you'd need the MMS settings so didn't quote them.
Without 3G you should still be able to get voice calls and texts but no Mobile Internet.
If the APN didn't work I'm not sure what the problem is to be honest. Usually when people report 3G not working it is just an APN that needs tweaking.
I see.
Well, my question was: Must I have a data plan for 3G signal on HTC Sensation?
I can call and text, but I was wonderring if I could initiate a Vido call too.

No, you shouldn't need a data plan for 3G signal.
You should be able to Video call over Wi-Fi but not over 3G.
Then, that means I have a problem, or I only need to create a valid APN?

Hey there . On a site i found different APN to create:
Cosmote
Hope it helps.
Guys, thanks for everything, but I managed somehow to find the answer by myself.
It seems that my phone was connected on 3G, but the 3G icon only appears when data transfer is made. If there is no data transfer involved, the phone still connects to 3G, when this network is available, but the 3G icon is not displayed.
If you want to see what kind of network is in your area, just go in dual mode network ( Settings> Wireless & Networks> Mobile network and from the Network menu, choose GSM.WCDMA auto, which is the default setting anyway) and then check it in Settings> About Phone> Network> Mobile Network Type. Here, you should be able to see HSDPA or EDGE, or whatever.
That's all. Cheers!

I posted similar issues in the king cobra thread.

I have the same issue. I've had 2 phones swapped out because of it but it's done it on every single one. If I'm inside my work where I have issues with getting a signal and then go outside the phone will show I have full signal in the status bar but I wont be able to make/receive phone calls or send/receive text messages. The only way to fix it is toggle airplane mode or reboot the phone. Drives me CRAZY!!!!

Will try this today and post back. I'm just happy I'm not the only member of the club.
If the issue is software related Im sure a fix will be along. If its hardware there will be a recall I hope. Rogers is notorious for refurbished replacements.
1.88 radio and kernel fixes this. I also returned a phone because of it. New one still did it untill I ran the 1.88 ruu and changed APN. You probably don't need to run ruu but you should install the 1.88 radio and kernel. This will fix the mobile data issues, dropped calls and not being able to call out with full bars. The APN for AT&T is on page 4 or 5 of the 1.88 thread. Ill locate it and post back.
Ok this is for ATT. I'm Sure Rogers is easy enough to find.

If it is correct then you do not need to change. I'm not sure but they could be updated by your rom developer. When installing the 1.88 ruu only, the apn had to always be updated. If anyone is still having connection issues verify you are on 1.88 kernel and radio. Just because a custom rom says 1.88 base that normally doesn't include kernel and radio. Both ate available for flashing in dev section.

There is nothing different. That is exactly the same as what is already listed on my AT&T phone.

Not sure if it's a problem with the radio, but after installing 1.88 kernel, it definitely fixed a similar issue that I had, which was that LTE was not restoring after losing signal.

the option to choose a preferred network mode is not available on the at&t one x. I have also tried using other apns but it still stays on LTE. Furthermore, I have also tried dialing *#*#4636#*#* to go to more settings, and it still wont let me change the prefferred network. stupid AT&T! I believe there is a GSM patch available on the development section for LTE toggle, but it is said that it doesn't work on at&t. I did not try that patch so I don't know for sure if it really doesnt work. Is that GSM patch the only way? thanks..

Good luck! :good:
Now of course AT&T disabled this option, but here's a workaround:
go to Settings>Mobile Network>Access Point Names
Click the Menu button, and select "New APN"
Enter the following:
Name: Media Net (name doesn't really matter, as long as its different from the original APN)
APN: wap.cingular
Proxy: Not set
Port: Not set
Username: [email protected]
Password: Not set
Server: Not set
MMSC: http://mmsc.cingular.com

MMS Protocol: WAP 2.0
MCC: 310
MNC: 410
Authentication type: Not set
APN type: default, supl, mms (no spaces after each comma)
Bearer: Unspecified
After entering the values, hit Menu again, and select "Save". Now go back, and you should see your "new" APN listed along with the "original" one (should be AT&T PTA). Just select the new APN, and hit back or home. You will see the 4G LTE icon disappear, and you will lose data for a minute or so (if you use the browser, it will give a no connection error). Then you should see the "4G" icon come up (no LTE), and you should have your data connection back.
Like I said, I'm still testing this out. Try it out, and let me know if it works for you. You should probably try sending and receiving MMS, just to make sure those work (I tested by sending a photo to myself, and seems to work fine). The wrong APN info can sometimes mess up MMS, but if that works, and other data works, you should be good to go.
I'm in a LTE market, and LTE is actually one of the reasons I bought this phone. So I actually intend to keep LTE on for the most part. But it would be nice to be able to shut if off if in a fringe LTE reception area, which may kill the battery quickly and/or cause connection problems. Or possibly save some battery if in a non-LTE market.

FYI, I subsequently found out that the method I previously posted of adding the non-LTE APN apparently does not completely turn off the LTE radio. Somebody commented that it will still seek for an LTE signal. But you may get some battery drain benefit, anyway.
oh man thank you for this tip! I'm in Houston, bought the phone in town where I work, was getting 16.5 mbps down. So happy. Got out to my house in the suburbs and was getting 600kbps and couldnt find a way to shut off LTE. The 2.5mbps I'm getting when I switch access points isn't amazing by any stretch, but at least it'll be usable until ATT decides to expand a little bit. I love xda.

Well, I managed to piss off AT&T by using more than 5GB on my "unlimited" (Horse sh!t) data plan to watch Netflix on my phone, and they sent me their hate-texts and started throttling my LTE speeds...
So, using the Ookla Speed Test app for Android, I ran several tests and came up with download speeds ranging about 0.51Mbps to 0.61Mbps. Then I entered the settings outlined here and forced my One X to stop using the LTE radio, and ran more speed tests - BAM! Suddenly I'm getting download speeds of 1.53, 2.34, 2.35, and 2.52Mbps. I mean, still not super-fast, but around 200k/second or so is plenty fast enough to watch videos at decent quality on YouTube, and surf with general ease.
Seems like they're more interested specifically in throttling the high-bandwidth LTE signal, since regular 3G/4G is so much slower anyway (but still way faster than a throttled LTE connection). So if you run over your LTE data plan and get throttled, then run some Ookla speed tests, switch to 3G/4G, then run some more speed tests and you might be pleasantly surprised - can't guarantee this will work for everyone, but it sure helped me a lot.
FYI I'm in Honolulu, Hawaii in a 19th floor penthouse apartment, so I get 4-5 bars constantly; Your mileage may vary depending on your area.
Thanks for the post! Life-saver!

[Q] ATT LTE but cannot receive MMS?

This weekend I moved from StraightTalk (w/ATT SIM) to ATT. Everything worked fine on ST, but now that I'm on ATT directly.. I cannot receive MMS.
I can do everything fine -- send/receive SMS, access the Internet at LTE speeds, send MMS. I've tried a bunch of APN's and my current settings are below.
Any thoughts on what to switch would be greatly appreciated! Since I'm on a Nexus 5, AT&T has basically shrugged their shoulders and said, It's not an ATT phone, so all the features may not work.
Name: ATT Phone
APN: phone
Proxy: not set
Port: not set
Username: Not Set
Password: Not Set
Server: Not Set
MMSC: ://mmsc.mobile.att.net (removed the http to get past the newbie link filter)
MMS Proxy: proxy.mobile.att.net
MMS Port: 80
MCC: 310
MNC: 410
Authentication Type: Not set
APN Type: default,mms,supl,fota
APN Protocol: IPv4
APN Roaming Protocol: IPv4
Bearer: Unspecified
MVNO Type: none

That all looks right... Don't know why it won't work for you, it has always worked fine for me

How would I know if it is not?
Everything else works as it should. LTE speed, sending/receiving SMS, sending MMS...
Edit: support rep with ATT checked the IMEI and SIM number and they match what's in the system.

Sometimes it takes a little while for messages to catch up. As long as your APN is correct, and you are on the right plan, you should be fine.

It's been 48+ hours -- seems like long enough for things to sort themselves out or it can take longer than that?
No one has said the APN is wrong... I was hoping some other folks with a Nexus 5 on ATT would be able to comment/confirm that what I have works for them.

No joy. Wi-fi is off, data is on (I can get to Google). I've also tried with LTE enabled and then at 3G (LTE off). Pictures continue to send fine, but just won't receive them.
Even if Wi-fi is on, I don't receive pictures.
I guess I'll wait another couple of days and see. Worst comes to worst, I can switch back to StraightTalk w/ATT sim and be where I was. Seems odd to work correctly on a second tier (in my mind anyway) carrier and not a first tier one.
Thanks!

If he puts the http:// in front of the mmsc, then yes it IS a link.

Yeah, really not a reason that it's not working. What size MMS are you trying to send?
I've tried about 20 different pictures that I've sent historically, plus AT&T Support couldn't send me pictures... nor could any friends. I don't know the size of any of the images. Just for fun, I've tried four different SMS/MMS apps, yeah I know.. that shouldn't matter at all.
On occasion the app has said "resizing image" before letting attache and send it, so some were "large".

Have you tried resetting the APN and then re-entering the AT&T settings? Just to see if something needs to be cleared out?

Yes, I've deleted all the APN settings my phone had and then manually entered in the one that I'm using.
I am.. it seems, quite the anomaly!
Thanks for your time and thoughts.

My wife was having that problem on her GS3 with AT&T. In the messaging app we set it to roaming Auto retrieve and it worked after that.
Hope that works for you.

I just tried that and didn't work.
And, I would like to officially stack claim to my status as an anomaly. I had one (1)picture that I sent myself today out of about 50 that actually went through. That's right, one was sent/received.. no setting or anything changed and back to can't receive.
I did also try deleting all APNs, rebooting the phone (taking the "clean things out" idea to an extreme) and manually typed in the APN.. no good.
Could my problem be with the Message Center Number? I've seen that referenced in a few places... but as I can send, it seems that wouldn't be the issue.
If I dial *#*#4636#*#* and go into Phone Information, the SMSC is blank. While I can type info into it, there's no "save" or "update" option...
If I hit refresh it populates with "+131323149810",145
Part in "s looks right for ATT, but again... no way to save it. The Update button doesn't 'seem to do anything.

It's definitely a weird problem for sure. It's one of those problems that if I had the phone in front of me...it might be a different story.

[GUIDE][Edit APN]Enable native mobile hotspot NO ROOT[Snapdragon S9+]

All credit goes to BlueFox721 as this was a method he discovered on the Note 8. I tested it and it seems to be working and it does not appear to count against hotspot data (i'm on Sprint). Settings still stuck after reboot!
Step 1 - Download Shortcut Master Lite from the Play Store.
Step 2 - Open Shortcut Master Lite and select the Menu (three vertical dots in the upper right).
Step 3 - Select App Explorer, and then All Apps
Step 4 – Navigate (scroll down) to com.test.LTEfunctionality and select.
Step 5 – Select the first item labled "LTEFunctionalityTest" and select launch.
Step 6 – Scroll down to LTE APN Setting and select.
Step 7 –Select APN2 LTE internet (Sprint) or your carrier internet APN.
Step 8 - Scroll down to APN type and select.
Step 9 - Add "DUN" to the setting (it should read "default, mms,DUN") without quotations.
Step 10 - Select Menu and save your settings
Congratulations, your device now has Native Hotspot without having to toggle data!

If your APN settings get greyed out, dial ##brand# from the dialer. After your phone restarts, your APN settings should be editable again.
IF someone has another SIM they can test it with, perhaps APN settings CAN be added. If I had another carrier's SIM, i'd test it now.
This method does not work on Sprint build U1ARBG (March Ota update) I also tried this method with the build that the s9+ ships with, but it didn't work either.
I'll give it a shot on T-Mobile.... Thanks for sharing!
*edit*
It will not allow me to change APN Type and ADD DUN on TMO...
Thanks. It worked for me. I am on G965U1 on Sprint.

Trying exiting out of Shortcut Master Lite and starting from step 1 again. My settings were greyed out at first, but when I went back in, like magic, the settings were no longer grey. I hope that works. I restarted my phone and I am still able to edit the settings.

this allows hotspot but it still counts your data right?

Yeah, not working here. Thank you for the video though.
Prior to the U1ARBG update the APN2 EHRPD Internet I was able to add the DUN, but LTE Internet was greyed out.
Now I can't even edit EHRPD

Seems to count against your regular data, BUT not hotspot data.
I'm on T-Mobile and all I did was add a new APN in the Mobile Networks setting page, copy everything from the default/grayed out APN but added "dun" at the end of the APN type and it seems to be working for me.
I've maxed my hotspot data allotment so I should be getting speeds in the kbps but I'm getting 10+ mbps with this change. Still counts towards regular data though.
Can this work on tmobile network Cruz ican add to my line igot really old plan if I want add hotspot yo my line I got pay more for my old plan
Sweet! Working on my Sprint G965USQU1ARBG.
BUT, I recall that this same mod worked on the S7 Edge when it was first introduced, but eventually a Sprint update reversed the edit and wouldn't allow you to edit the APN settings. Let's hope that doesn't happen here.

Odd, it's working for me.
Just want to confirm i bought the unlocked S9 plus at bestbuy today and tethering hot spot works out of the box on the Verizon grand father unlimited plan. i didnt get the annoying add telling me i had to pay $29.99 to use the hot spot feature. I took some screen shots for you guys to prove it
Working fine here on Unlocked GS9+ with Sprint SIM card.

Thank you. I'm able to modify and add new APNs using this method. I have the USA unlocked version.
With my Sprint S9 Snapdragon, I have been scouring the internet for two days almost nonstop, simply hoping to find some magical way to prevent Sprint from forcing my tether to be capped. I have tried dialer options, I have tried every random HiddenMenu shortcut, I have tried ADB CMD and trying to rewrite the APN by hand, I have tried going into the settings and going through Mobile Networks, I have tried mounting /system in the recovery menu, I looked into changing the CSC because it's linked to APN locking... I've literally tried it all.
PDANet+, FoxFi, EasyTether, ClockworkMod Tether ... none of them would work. They would automatically be stuck at 2mbps instead of my normal 30 to 40. Hiding tether/hotspot this way was NOT an option at all.
And then following this to go into the APN settings, exiting out, then going back in again... it finally let me change the god damn junk! THANK GOD
Specifically, I think I had to do it in this order:
1) Open the Shortcut Master Lite and open LTEFunctionalityTest
2) Open LTE APN Setting
3) Open an APN you want to change.
3) If it's greyed out, close everything and then restart from #1.
4) When done editing, save, and you should be good to go.
If that doesn't work even after trying repeatedly (make sure Shortcut Master Lite is completely closed, etc) ... then you can try the following which allowed me to edit the APN on a sister Sprint S9+ phone:
1) Dialer App, ##3282# (DATA)
2) Edit
3) Sprint MSL for mine is 000000
4) APN Settings
5a) "APN" and "APN protocol" should be editable. Make a minor change, save your APN.
5b) Then change them back, save the APN again. Do this for each APN you want full access to.
6) Open the Shortcut Master Lite and open LTEFunctionalityTest
7) Open LTE APN Setting
8) If it's greyed out, close everything and then restart from #6.
9) After you finish editing, save, and you should be good to go.
Consider this working on a Sprint S9+ & Sprint S9 Snapdragon SM-G960U - 8.0.0 Oreo Build Feb 10th
---
This is very important to me because I live in the country. There are no internet service providers out here, they refuse to run data lines. My Hotspot is the only option I have and I switched to Sprint from Verizon for x3 faster speeds.
Again, thank you very much. If this didn't work, I would have had to wait until TWRP or Root was possible on Snapdragon to change the APN.
--
Anyone know the package name for the Sprint Hotspot App? I'd like to be certain I only use the native hotspot by freezing the Sprint version using Package Disabler Pro.
