[HELP] CM13+TWRP - Installation error, bootloop, PC doesn't recognize phone via USB - Moto G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Moto G XT1032
Hello,
I hope that you understand my English. I am kind of a layman concerning Android, but still wanted to install Cyanogenmod 13. I followed these instructions (can't post them apparently since I am new). Official instructions on the CM website. (Bootloader was already unlocked because I already installed Cyanogenmod 12, went back to Stock ROM and now tried to install CM13). Like alwas there were some minor errors during the first steps, but I handled them alright, I think.
The real problem started when I tried to install the zip-file of CM13 ("Installing CyanogenMod from recovery", step 8). I followed the instructions (wipe etc.), but the installation stopped at "Patching system image unconditionally" and it said something like "missing md5-file" although the file I downloaded on the TWRP website was right next to the recovery .img.
After trying and trying I started to go through the options in TWRP recovery (which was a fault, I know) and wiped some things that probably should not have been wiped. Next error message was: "unable to mount /system". New problem.
Then I thought, I might try the recovery that was right next to the downloadlink of the CM13 firmware. Installed it succesfully and tried again some things, now I have a bootloop and can't shut off the phone. When I shut it off, 1 second later the Google-screen with the open lock appears again". The only help was to manually shut it off with recovery.
I can't even start Android anymore, which means I can't activate USB-debugging, the installation files of CM13 are missing and the main problem: my PC only recognizes the phone in fast boot mode - I can't move files to the phone, it just says in the task bar: "Fastboot falcon S".
As soon as I enter recovery mode, the USB-sign on Windows vanishes.
Tried to move the files to the devices by "adb push cm-13.0-20160703-NIGHTLY-falcon.zip /scard", but it says "* daemon not running. starting it now on port 5037 *
* daemon startet successfully *
adb: error: connect failed: no devices/emulators found"
The device is not recognized by "fastboot devices" in cmd.
I hope that you understood everything. Already tried to get help in German forums, but nobody answered there.
And yeah, I definitely stopped trying to solve it by myself because I might just destroy it more.
Thanks for your help!

seems like we are on the same trolley.
I wanted to have a 100% clean system so I wiped everything.
I reinstall SDK, google drivers, motorola drivers, but no success. In fastboot mode it's written: USB connected, on the computer eject "Fastboot falcon S". I create file adb_usb.ini with id in it, restarted system, killed adb and so on. Tried different USB port, different cables.
Aendroit, if you find a way share.
I'm on W10 if that matters.
Ok. So I managed to go through the problem.
First, I was able to reinstall TWRP with fastboot (fastboot root twrp.....), so fastboot worked for me. Then it seems that on the main screen, where you choose options with volume buttons, fastboot works, but not adb.
I went into recovery and "adb shell" worked, so did "adb devices".
I used push command and so on.

I'm glad you got the solution now. Unfortunately I can't follow the instructions. Could you please take me through it step by step ("fastboot root twrp", I never used a command like this before). Thanks!
Because when I go in recovery and type in "adb shell" or "adb shell" on my computer, it says "no devices/emulators found".
Update: Got it. I can enter TWRP now, but in the installation log it said "Mismatched partition size (recovery)" at the end. If someone knows what that means ...

I meant: fastboot flash recovery twrp-3.0.0.0_2-falcon.img
Mismatched size is just an information, nothing to worry about. Now, when you are in TWRP try to check the device "adb devices", should work.

Thank you, my computer recognizes the device again! I was able to copy the files to my phone. Unfortunately I still can't install a custom rom. I tried Mokee instead of CM13 now and i always get the same messages:
"Checking for MD5 file...
Skipping MD5 check: no MD5 file found
Target: 146758281
Detected filesystem ext4 for /dev/block/platform/msm_sdcc.1/by-name/system" and so on.
I don't know what that is supposed to mean ...

Well, I'm not very good oriented in all this stuff, so I don't know why you got those problems, far from being a dev.
I copied ressurection ROM + open gapps nano (thou I always used banks, but this time wanted to save more free space) and installed it via TWRP without any issues.

Thank you for the answer. Mokee works now! I'm not happy that I can't use CM13, but I got Mokee working after a while and I'm glad about it.

[Q]Stuck in bootloop with deleted OS, abd not working.

Hey all,
I have a big problem with my TF700.
I wanted to root my device after unlocking the bootloader through the app, but by being dumb I managed to delete the OS in TWRP (thought it was factory reset) and now I'm in big trouble.
The only thing the tablet loads now is the TWRP 2.2.1 recovery. (TWRP came with a root-package, I didn't install it myself.)
Since I can't load an OS that is apparently deleted, I'm stuck with using the (latest) SDK to get the stock rom back on the tablet.
The problem is, it doesn't work, at all. The device is recognised by my (Win7) PC and the 'adb devices' command gives me the ID and 'recovery'.
If I try to push the ROM to the Sdcard folder (or any folder, for that matter) It gives me a "protocol error" with no other explanation.
If I try to sideload it it is stuck on "Waiting for device".
I tried the 'shell' command, just to see what that does, but it also gives me an error.
Other commands can also give the the "error: closed" message.
Since both of those commands don't work, I can't get anything on this tablet, since I can't get this version of TWRP to mount an external (micro) SDcard, the option simply isn't there.
Can anyone help me with this, of has my tablet been reduced to an expensive paperweight?
That's the problem with packages - you don't really know what's in it...
What root package did you use?
You have a very outdated recovery installed. I'm guessing here, since you didn't post your bootloader version and that's the first thing we need to know!
Can you still get into the bootloader?
Boot with Power and Volume Down buttons until you see the tiny script and post your bootloader version. Should be something like 10.6.1.....
Do NOT do anything else in recovery at this point!!!! If it is incompatible with your bootloader you could hard brick!
Once we know if you have fastboot access and what your bootloader version is, we can help you to flash the correct recovery in fastboot. With that installed it's a piece of cake to get you up and running.
But be patient! Don't do anything else you're not quite sure of!
*Update Below*
I believe the culprit was the 'Install recovery' method "Scott's Recovery install tool"
I tried a few but most didn't do anything. Every tool I tried comes from the xda forums and checked youtube videos explaining the steps.
If I boot using Volume down + power, nothing extra happens. I just see in the left hand corner "this device is unlocked", since I unlocked the bootloader using the ASUS app.
If I use the command adb reboot bootloader, it goes to TWRP 2.2.1.
Does this imply that I also deleted the bootloader?
Update: I deleted all drivers and software regarding the tablet from my PC and I installed the adb setup package from these forums and reinstalled the (universal?) driver package. This turned out to be a newer version of adb, and I actually managed to push a file to the tablet with no problems. I am reluctant to try anything else at the moment, since this whole ordeal had given me quite the scare (and the desire to learn more about this all)
Can anyone help me revive my tablet?

Ok, good - you got adb working. The adb command to boot into the bootloader is
Code:
adb reboot-bootloader
Note the hyphen
Also I wonder if you pushed Power and Volume Down long enough. You should feel the tablet vibrate twice, then see some tiny script and 3 icons appear. That would be the bootloader menu and in it, you are in fastboot mode by default.
The next step would be to check if you have a fastboot connection.
The command for that is
Code:
fastboot devices
Read my guide on flashing a custom recovery and rom very carefully and follow the steps outlined to get TWRP 2.8.0.1 on your tablet.
Ask any questions you may have in that thread.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2688891
Edit: Sorry, forgot that we have to determine your bootloader version first. So use the button combination or the adb command to boot into it and post it. Don't worry. I don't think you did anything to the bootloader - it's not that easy to mess it up...
Unfortunately, the adb code doesn't work, with or without the hyphen. The device will reboot, but will return to TWRP.
I've held down the Volume down+power button for more than a minute witout result. The device will just reboot after a while for as long as I'm holding it. I do see the screen flicker for a second.
I've also noticed, that after I push a file to the tablet, that after a reboot it loses the data I just moved.
After booting TWRP, when I look in the command line of TWRP, it tells me that it can't mount the 'system' , 'data' and 'cache' forders. (tw_mount)
And it specifically mentions (multiple times) that the /data folder failed to mount, giving the message "No such file or directory"
It seems I really managed to F'ed it up good...
My "force-boot-to-bootloader" kernel module might help you unbrick. Read this guide very carefully before you do anything:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/transformer-tf700/help/guide-t2853546
You people are my new heroes!
The last guide did the trick. The stock firmware is installed and I'm currently updating and installing all the apps.
Thank you all só much, you really saved me a ton of frustration.

Flashed stock recovery and thought I soft bricked my shield tablet.

First I'll give credit where it is due. From two threads on this site is where I got help with this issue:
I followed THIS guys steps for manually erasing and got the recovery images and lots of other useful information from HERE. Thank you guys very much!
OK, so, hopefully I can help someone with my little story as well. I was having issues with apps and programs crashing on me with lollipop and the new marshmallow update. The tablet just wasn't working properly and moving slow. I even had the SD card holding all my apps and larger files so I didn't overload the internal storage. So, I decided I wanted to flash back to factory/stock recovery and go from there. I did this using THIS method. I flashed via the "flash-all.bat" file (the command in fastboot is the same as the file name). I should note that there was one instance that failed during the install (I did try it again and got the same failure). Said something about “did you mean you wanted to flash this partition” or something, then showed it failed. After flashing I hit continue on the bootloader screen of the tablet and it said it was "cold booting." After about 5 minutes or so it started to boot but never made it past the NVidia screen. I tried wiping the phone with factory reset, wiping the cache, etc. and then re-flashing the recovery (again with the .bat file). I tried flashing TWRP but it didn't install apparently, because it still went to factory recovery. I even re-locked and then unlocked my bootloader to see if that would set everything straight. Nothing seemed to work. I knew I would eventually find a solution though so I kept looking. Stumbled on some other people that had the same issues but no solution (hope those people got it figured out). So here's what I did after some more research:
First, if you're in this situation and you did factory reset to try and resolve the problem, you may feel like you can no longer communicate with the device via fastboot/adb, but as long as you have the usb drive and your SDK tools installed (I used CodeWorks for Android all-in-one program) that shouldn't be a problem. You'll just have to be in the bootloader on the tablet.
-If for some reason you deleted or uninstalled your drivers and tools you'll have to download them again and then, the computer should still be able to communicate with the tablet. In the device manager under portable devices it will still show up as Module something or other. So the computer still sees the device but doesn't fully recognize it yet. Don't worry, this should still work! Just make sure you that fastboot is seeing the device by inputting "fastboot devices" in the command window and a 14 digit serial number should pop up. If it just says "list of devices" or there's nothing then you wont be communicating with the tablet.
Your device should be connected to your computer and started in bootloader mode. On your computer you should have the command prompt for adb/fastboot open. I just go to the folder where the .exe files are located and hold shift and right click in the white space of the folder, then select "open command window here."
From here follow the erase steps: stolen from manigault! :highfive:
fastboot erase system
fastboot erase userdata
fastboot erase boot
fastboot erase recovery
fastboot erase cache
Then flash your recovery MANUALLY:
fastboot flash recovery {dir}/recovery.img
fastboot flash boot {dir}/boot.img
fastboot flash system {dir}/system.img
fastboot flash userdata {dir}/userdata.img
fastboot flash staging {dir}/blob
fastboot flash dtb {dir}/tegra124-tn8-p1761-1270-a04-e-battery.dtb
You can download whatever recovery version you wish. I downloaded 2.2.2 because that's what my device came with out of the box on Christmas 2014. It will more then likely be a .zip file. To make this whole process a little easier simply extract the files in the .zip file where the adb.exe and fastboot.exe files are located (folder should be named platform-tools) and you can completely eliminate typing the whole directory before the file name. ***After your done flashing everything you can go back and delete those files if you want. Just double check that you're deleting the right files by looking at the original zip file. Not sure if it makes a difference but I deleted them anyway.
For example the commands in fastboot will look like this exactly :
(after extracting recovery files into platform-tools folder)
fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
fastboot flash boot boot.img
fastboot flash system system.img
fastboot flash userdata userdata.img
fastboot flash staging blob
fastboot flash dtb tegra124-tn8-p1761-1270-a04-e-battery.dtb
Note: Do NOT use the flash-all.bat command as this doesn't seem to work for this situation. Do it manually like shown above. And let each individual process complete before attempting to input another command.
After this step I didn't select continue on the bootloader. You can either select reboot or simply input "fastboot reboot" into the command window. It may take about 5 minutes to start installing everything but just be patient, it should start. Sometimes with these things you have to do things twice before it works. If for some reason it doesn't work the first time then start from the beginning and try it again. It took two times for me, but that's because I installed system.img twice and was getting double screen. Newb error... and I was a bit inebriated last night when I did this.
Hope this helps someone!
Thanks again to manigault and MidgetMob!
NVIDIA download files HERE!
i think i done the same thing
but the problem i now have is i cnt get tablet into fastboot on pc. i can load fastboot on tablet with power and volume down , but the tablet only shows as MTP device in device manager. i have downloaded drivers from nvidia and no matter what i try i cant install them i have been through all instructions but scince it went to mtp device i cant get device showing in adb. The only way i can get device showing in adb on pc ist to select apply update from adb ! but none of these commands listed in your post will work because its in sideload. is there anyway i cn reset , flash custom rom ect bu using commands while device is in adb sideload.
all i get is now send the package you want to apply to the device with "adb sideload <filename>".....
if you could shed any light on this it would be much appreciated , thanks , lester
did you update official android 6.0 before? then, not working stock recovery, stock boot...
If you can enter bootloader mode, download unofficial twrp 3.0.0.0 (here http://forum.xda-developers.com/shield-tablet/development/wip-twrp-2-8-0-1-unofficial-t2877117) and flash it.
i have a working boot.img file on marshmallow if you want.. please reply.
Sorry for the late response! I have no clue how you got into sideload??? Are you talking about through the recovery on your device? You're not able to get adb/ fastboot to recognize the device, right? It doesn't matter how you get the tablet into the bootloader. Whenever you have the phone in the bootloader then you'll use the fastboot command to "talk to" the device; i.e. "fastboot devices" without the quotes. That command should show your device if it shows as an MTP device whenever you open your "device manager" in windows. That's the same exact situation I was in. Download the codeworks from nvidia like I linked above. Hopefully then you should be able to recognize your device through the bootloader. If not DM me and I'll try to help you.
I'm having the exact problem as Lester. Tablet boots into bootloader but won't connect to computer. So I go into recovery mode and nothing works except apply update from adb. Which brings up the side load message that Lester quoted. And bootloader is showing "device=locked". I am attempting to fix this tablet for a friend that messed it up trying to flash a custom rom. Problem is he had no idea what he was doing and I'm not exactly sure what he did. I do however have a lot of experience with rooted android devices and flashing so any help would be GREATLY APPRECIATED!

Also, I've already tried flashing stock rom back onto the tablet by applying update from sd card function in the recovery but when I try to do that the tablet for some reason can't mount the sd card.

If you've got the device in bootloader then you need to use fastboot, not adb. Try the command 'fastboot devices' and see if the device id is listed. If so then grab a factory image, unzip it and use fastboot to flash the .img files using the commands 'fastboot flash system system.img'. Just make sure to match the partition names to the files.
Hello i have similar issue except when i try flash something i get this error ''remote: file write failed''
and i have to reboot into fastboot to get it flashing fully
but even though i managed to flash everything by rebooting when i boot system nothing shows up, i can just see the back light coming on and turning off after a while
Please help

Can't go after twrp

Hi,
I have a problem with my r7plusf.
I tried to install lineageOs, with the CM recovery I just got a "zip signature verification" problem. To avoid this problem i flashed TWRP and tried installing it without checking the zip signature. When doing that i got a "table error".
I try to reflash back the rom I had and now I am in trouble :
when i flash it it boots on TWRP instead of the rom.
I tried installing the colorOs recovery and it did not work (I just saw a message telling me "formating data and cache")
/*And now twrp is always telling me "can't mount /data".*/
I resolved this problem by formating the data partition
Does anyone know what i can do to reuse my phone?
Thank you by advance for all the help you could give me.
Little update :
I tried to build lineageOS by hand with this link : https://wiki.lineageos.org/r7plus_build.html to see if there was the cyanogenmod/lineage recovery included but when I try to brunch, I just get this error :
Code:
"ninja: error: '/home/user/android/system/out/target/product/r7plus/obj_arm/SHARED_LIBRARIES/libtime_genoff_intermediates/export_includes', needed by '/home/user/android/system/out/target/product/r7plus/obj_arm/SHARED_LIBRARIES/libandroid_servers_intermediates/import_includes', missing and no known rule to make it"
After looking at the files I just saw that the folder named "obj_arm" does not exists. For info Iam on archlinux whith linux kernel version 4.9.6-1 and I have GCC 6.3.1 .
Does anyone know how to solve this bug or has anyone got the cyanogenmod recovery?
UPDATE : I tried with the cyanogenmod recovery that someone gave to me and it didn't work either, the phone still boots on the recovery. I don't have anymore ideas anymore
Some one oppo forum just gave me the way to save my phone, i just had to boot in fastboot mode, plug the phone in my computer, open a command prompt and type the command "fastboot continue", everything just work fine now.

Need help recovering phone!

I'm in way over my head guys, so here's my situation:
I have no OS installed, for some reason I can't get into TWRP anymore (it goes to eRecovery instead).
I CAN get to bootloader screen (bootloader is unlocked).
adb does not recognize my device on device list command (it worked before, but now I can't get into the OS to turn on USB debugging and such...).
please help! I don't know what else to do!

I think the first step to fixing my phone is to get it recognized in the list of devices attached in adb.
how do I go about doing that?
In device manager I got it to recognize my phone as Android Phone > Android ADB Interface.
so I believe the drivers are updated, what else can I do to get my phone recognized in cmd adb?
If I need to provide any more details then please say, I am getting hopeless
Edit: I managed to get into TWRP. still no clue how to continue from here as I can't transfer any files from PC
I found a update.zip file on my phone's SD card, I can't remember which ROM version it holds, but when I try to flash it I get a few errors:
check_write_data_to_partition,write data error
E:unknown command [errno]
Update_huawei_pkg_from_ota_zip: update package from zip failed
Updater process ended with ERROR: 7
Error installing zip files '/external_sd/update.zip'
I think I managed to screw my phone up even more, I can no longer get into TWRP...

ASUS TF201 - issues getting any OS to boot (though TWRP works fine).

Hello folks.
In my months-long quest to avoid turning an ASUS TF201 tablet into e-waste ...
I've searched, searched again, searched some more, and while I've found answers (none of which have worked), a lot of them seem to be dated, or depend on files that are no longer available for download, so I turn to you for suggestions.
Current state:
The tablet will not boot Android.
TWRP works fine.
The problem(s):
I am unable to flash the device with ASUS' official firmware. TWRP returns an error when the ASUS firmware runs its "checks," then fails.
I have tried Chrombi-KK, following the directions step by step, but a few strange things occur:
1. When flashing through TWRP (.zip images sitting on an SD card), everything completes with no errors, but on reboot, the tablet displays its ASUS logo, but does not boot into Android. I let it sit there for three hours today, and it just sat there, displaying the logo.
2. When trying to flash from ADB (TWRP update for example), it sits there endlessly at "< waiting for any device >". This is odd, because ADB's "reboot" commands works fine.
Now, I'm at a loss. The hardware seems fine, but I'm stuck ... and this is after months of trying, giving up, trying again etc.
Is this a lost cause?
Any help at all would be much appreciated. I've tried so many things, so many online "solutions," to no avail. So I turn to the experts as my Hail Mary pass before sending this to the eco centre.
Thanks for reading, and hopefully ... just maybe ... someone will have the magical set of instructions to get this thing working again.
The only command to verify whether an ADB / Fastboot connection got successfully established is
Code:
adb devices OR fastboot devices
The command
Code:
adb reboot
simply in Android's system file called build.prop (re-)sets flag ro.bootmode to normal what is read by bootloader when Android boots up.

As it turns out, I had already stumbled upon your your "ADB-FASTBOOT-Installer" during a trip down one of the many rabbit holes trying to get this tablet working again.
adb devices returns:
List of devices attached0123456789ABCDEF recovery
adb reboot restarts the tablet, which I assume means the ASUS tablet driver is working.
I can't seem to do anything else with adb, however, such as push a new TWRP version, etc. This may be a key point, as it seems likely the version I have of TWRP may be too old to support upgrade using something like Chrombi-KK.
Is this a likely theory?
I would re-flash phone's Stock ROM to get rid off of all mofications applied so far to check for phone is working as expected.

ok, so good thing is twrp boots, now again if you have box with wich the tablet come try to get correct model number and search for official frimware to flash through adb using flashall.cmd
again, if official rom is not installing don't worry flash THIS custom rom using TWRP make sure to wipe all before flashing.

Yes, thank goodness it's not completely bricked, haha.
I think the version of TWRP that's on there may be too old, and I'm having trouble pushing a newer version through ADB ... so this is the current hurdle I'm trying to overcome.
Might you happen to have a link to the ASUS TF201 drivers known to work in Windows 10, so I can rule that out? If I can't get ADB to push a newer TWRP version from Windows, I may give it a go in Linux too ... but I'm trying not to open up new avenues of complexity, so I've restricted all my efforts to Windows as that's where most of the online help I can find tends to take place.
Thanks!
Edit: Unfortunately, the download link to [ROM][N 7.1] KatKiss Nougat [TF201] no longer works:
404 Not Found
This has been another constant obstacle, i.e., recommended files to download are no longer available.

Nobody needs TWRP to re-flash a device's Stock ROM.
It's typically done via ADB Sideload method.

404 Not Found
This has been another constant obstacle, i.e., recommended files to download are no longer available.

how you tried to flash stock rom, i mean do you boot into fastboot after booting into twrp or not?

Nobody needs TWRP to re-flash a device's Stock ROM.
It's typically done via ADB Sideload method.

As I mentioned before, "2. When trying to flash from ADB (TWRP update for example), it sits there endlessly at "< waiting for any device >". This is odd, because ADB's "reboot" commands works fine."

I've tried two methods.
The first is to try to flash it from TWRP, but this fails with an error. The stock ROM appears to be checking for dependencies, and it fails this check.
The second is to use ADB (fastboot) while the tablet is sitting in TRWP. It stalls at "< waiting for any device >".
So this the problem. Neither of those two methods work for the stock ROM.
With a third party ROM, TWRP appears to flash the device successfully (no errors or stalls). When I reboot the device, it will not boot Android, and gets stuck at the ASUS boot logo indefinitely.
I'm not sure what do next to get past these two problems.

here is the problem, ok so follow the steps carefully,
boot into twrp
then connect your phone to your pc
type "adb devices",
if some thing like 1234567890 -recovery shows up proceed else start-over,
after successfully detected by adb typed "adb reboot bootloader"
then after booting into fastboot mode type "fastboot device"
if something shows up proceed else tell me
make sure you have installed adb and fastboot properly,
after all this run the cmd file in stock rom, to automatically flash it.

the problem is your pc does not have adb and fastboot properly installed
try this one https://forum.xda-developers.com/t/tool-minimal-adb-and-fastboot-2-9-18.2317790/
also, use this official driver https://www.asus.com/SupportOnly/Eee_Pad_Transformer_Prime_TF201/HelpDesk_Download/
if your pc is 64 bit use win764bit version

This "waiting for device" problem happens when the USB device node is not accessible to your current user. The USB id is different in Fastboot mode, so you can easily have permission to it in ADB but not in Fastboot.
Each manufacturer implements Fastboot differently. So, if not already done yet, download and install the suitable "Android USB Driver" provided by ASUS. Then Fastboot should work.
BTW: Your device actually stucks in recovery mode.
Is OEM Unlock got enabled in Android settings? If not, Fastboot never will work.
