Emojis not working - Moto G 2015 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I got my son a Moto G 3rd Gen a few months ago and he's really pleased with it apart from it not sending or receiving emojis. Instead of an emoji the message is just blank.
He's using the stock messaging app and SwiftKey keyboard.
I've Googled and found references to changing the SMS encoding method to auto but can't find this setting anywhere in the phone.
Any help appreciated, he's only nine and emojis are an important thing in his social life

No replies, bummer

Can he successfully put emojis in any app aside from the stock sms, like skype or social media postings or emails? I know that for a long time, skype would only let you use the built-in smileys.
Is it possible your phone provider is treating emojis as images (which makes them mixed media messages, no longer SMS)? I'm pretty sure TracPhone does this, or used to. If
you haven't included mms in his phone's plan, that would maybe be the problem.
If that's not it, maybe try a different SMS app?
HTH

Or even try stock keyboard in messaging app?

Group MMS Fix?

Does anyone know of any mod or ROM that will properly support group MMS in android as it is properly support on iPhone, WP7, and BlackBerry?
On the HTC One X the messages arrive properly but when I send a reply, it gets sent as an individual SMS. Interestingly, if I attach an image (thus forcing it to convert to MMS), it will reply-all correctly.
So I guess .... something has to be modified so that the OS knows to send as MMS (with text only) when responding to a group
Use goSMSPro or Handcent. Need to enable it in both.

I appreciate the suggestion. I dont want to put words int eh OPs mouth, but I think they were referring to a way to mod or update native software so that the native messages app works properly with MMS. for many people, using a 3rd party app for messaging is not preferable.
that said, there are threads running around XDA regarding installing the stock ICS messaging app. perhaps that would work properly with group messaging on HOX (I would assume but haven't tried).
The stock app doesn't work with group messaging either, to my knowledge but someone can correct me if I am wrong.
Moto BLUR software has this implemented in their messaging app. Don't think its that easy of a thing to do.
Basically the messages come in as MMS and they are grouped together by the software.
This is the worst if you came from an iPhone and have a lot of friends with iPhones. I get group texts daily so I had to download Go SMS. After enabling group texting in Go SMS the group messages are shown properly in the stock HTC messaging app, but I still need to use Go if I want to reply to the group texts.
Gtg you have a one x to? Awesome this is a good thing
Sent from my HTC One X using xda premium
I've also been wondering this too.. I just installed Go SMS Pro but I still can't seem to get it to function like the iPhone would where its all in one conversation sort of like an online chat room. Hmmm anyone else have any tips?
edit: all working smooth now so happy.

This is good to know, thanks. So this issue seems to be isolated as a flaw in ICS, then, correct?

I wouldn't say its a "flaw", its just an unimplemented feature. Not sure why they never took the time to do it, it's pretty popular.

Oh okay, thanks. I wasn't sure if it was a bug or just not developed. Seems very odd that they didnt implement group MMS.

Exactly this.
GoSMS is ok but is rather ugly, and crash-happy. What will happen is that a group message comes in, then gosms groups it into the threaded convo so I get 2 notifications for every 1 message. It's rather annoying. Handcent is even uglier.
I share your frustrations. I have tried ChompSMS since I used BiteSMS on the iPhone and it doesn't support MMS. I tried Handcent and the UI is cartoonish and it doesn't display contact photos correctly. The HTC messages app allows me to send a group MMS, but then I get individual replies back and it doesn't maintain the group.
Using at&ts message app and it does group txt, but you can't start one. It has to be sent to you first and from there it'll always reply to group

this. it's gotta be here. I hope the modders can figure a way of getting the phone to reply with an mms message, attachment free, when the message is sent within a group thread.
Bumping this thread.... anyway for a mod or an app that can force a text-only message to MMS when there are multiple recipients?? that's all I need :X
developer support requested
This would be PERFECT, especially if this pref could be added to stock SMS/MMS application. No need for Handcent or GoSMS, which are both ugly and unwieldy, IMHO.

GO SMS will slow down to a snail's pace if you have consecutive group texts coming in (which happens frequently as people are using it to converse).
It's slow, it's rather ugly, AND it gives you TWO notifications for every one group text. It's seriously terrible. WP7, WP8, BlackBerry, iPhone, all properly support Group MMS. Even some featurephones do it correctly as well.
I swear this has to be some kind of crazy oversight from Google or some kind of weird political war where no one will address such a simple issue. I mean if Verizon and AT&T can make an app that corrects this, then what gives??
Native SMS retarded -- google wake up!

GO SMS is a NO GO as the OP has said. I agree Google is slacking here, or there has to be something else.
Is the raw code unavailable to developers to recompile and change the native text messaging application and it's MMS settings?

[Q] Android 4.4 Hangouts SMS issue

Hi there,
My first post here, although I've hung out, anonymously, looking at the resources within the forum.
Today I received my Nexus 5. It's a lovely bit of hardware, but I've come from an HTC phone (4.1.1 Desire X) and I love the Sense UI; just so you know, I hate stock 4.4 thus my post below is in utter exasperation
I'm having an issue with trying to send an SMS. Unfortunately, I have to use Hangouts (I refused to update from Google Talk on the Desire X) and I'm finding that I can't sending a frigging SMS to a colleague at work because I have his Gmail email address as part of his contact details!!!
This is absolutely the most retarded thing in a Phone OS that I have come across, ever. Unfortunately, as an early adopter of this phone, I'm stuck without an alternative. So far as I can see, in Hangouts, I would have to type in the phone number manually whilst being logged out of my Gmail accounts in Hangouts to send an SMS, or maybe deleting the user's email address would suffice.
Am I missing some way of sending an SMS that's not completely obvious here?
My N5 arrives tomorrow, so I can't be much help with the app itself, but if it's really confusing/awful you can download an alternative SMS app from the play store and set it as your default.
Edit: I hear you on hating hangouts. I cant stand the version they have on 4.0/4.1/4.2/4.3, been sticking with talk also.
I don't have it in my hands yet to test, but I'm fairly sure once you've opened the "new hangout" window, you can tap on their name on the upper left and switch to SMS from Hangout message.

This app simply uses the word "Hangouts" over "SMS" so basically new hangout means new text message unless you specify a hangout chat. If the actual hangouts for either is unavailable then a text message will be automatically sent to the number. New "SMS" is the plus button and you can immediately type the number or scroll to find your contact. Everything after seems to work just like iMessage.

Seems to be the downside of having the device nice and early, noone else has one to confirm the issue.
Unfortunately, the other apps don't seem to work as they have to be rebuilt due to the changes that 4.4 has introduced

I'm not sure what problem you are having. I just got my N5 today and when I create a new message in Hangouts and choose a contact (one that has a gmail.com email address as well as a cell number) I have the choice between starting a chat or sending an SMS to the phone number. Do you not see this?

I've never had an iPhone, which I'm guessing from the name is where that messaging application comes from. I tried to send a message to a collegue, and it sent it as a hangout, not an SMS. There is no option not to send it as an hangout, any more so than there is an option to send the message as a hangout, so I can't send him text messages.

Okay, yes, if I type in the person's name I now see several entries for the person, one is the Hangouts account which is top and the other is for SMS.
However, if I scroll down and select the person as I was doing originally, even though it says his phone number, it defaults to hangouts and you can't change it.
I don't have particularly many people in my contacts list so I prefer to scroll and select, as it's probably quicker for me, rather than type into the search box.
you need to verify your phone number before being able to use it for sms
hit the plus button and add a contact...then select the contact's name from the top of the screen (next to the green handouts icon), and choose their phone number instead of their email address

Quite aside from not wishing to verify my number with Google, I shouldn't have to. SMS should be completely devoid of this kind of requirement as it is very basic mobile phone functionality.
I have spent quite some considerable time today turning off location services and and any data sent back to Google. I've also been disabling certain Google Apps and would disable more if it would let me. I've also found that App Ops seems to have been disabled too, so I can't even control what third party apps do; which was part of the reason for getting a 4.3+ phone.
At the moment, it seems that I can send messages, and hopefully something like Contacts+ will be updated to work with 4.4 and I can then disable Hangouts.
you can disable hangouts now, you just need to install an alternative sms app if you don't like the default...try Handcent

So install your own SMS app...4.4 allows you to use any SMS app as the default App, and then you can even uninstall Hangouts if you want to.
That's the beauty of a Nexus device.

Sorry, I'm just angry that Google have just foisted the Hangouts app onto 4.4 users when it clearly isn't user friendly enough and makes one of my most common uses of the phone difficult.
I'll try Handcent. Contacts+/Messages+ doesn't currently seem to support 4.4 as you can't set it as the default messaging application and you can't send outgoing messages (It looks like you can send messages but they just disappear and aren't sent.)

The issue that I'm having is that not a lot of messaging applications support 4.4 yet. And as I've found with Messages+ if it doesn't support it you can have issues with messages that don't send/disappear.
You can uninstall Hangouts updates, you can't uninstall it. And if you uninstall the updates, you can't disable it.
Sliding messaging was updated to be compatible with 4.4, you can try it out

I'm with the OP on this, I received my N5 today and it's almost impossible to start a new SMS conversation from within the app.
The app itelf is quite nice, but the SMS experience is sub-standard to say the least. I know I can go install another SMS app - but that's not the point, it's like shipping the phone/software with no dialer in it.

I must be a brain scientist or a rocket surgeon or something... all I had to do to create to new SMS was click the "+" then start typing my contact's name or number. If my contact has a phone number associated with it I can select that for an SMS or their email for a hangout message......
Im confused and whether i understand your question properly. Anyways in the actual recipients message you can click their name and switch from a SMS conversation to a google talk/hangouts message. Not sure if that helped or not. You can more clearly see what i am talking about in this video. http://youtu.be/0ZFc3NFqfFk

[Q] Request/Question: Audio Clips in Hangouts

Hey guys....
I am wondering if anyone knows of a way to send audio clips through hangouts text messages. I am happy with hangouts overall and i like having it integrated with text messaging but i frequently send audio clips to friends/fam through text messaging. I have not been able to find a way to do this on my nexus without downloading Handcent.
Is there a mod possible to allow this? Or am I missing something???
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for the advice. I really dont want to use a 3rd party app though. I feel like they should include the capability in hangouts....
take this with a grain of salt, but i thought i read that they were looking into that and voice calls with an upcoming update
you can always ask the question here though (https://productforums.google.com/forum/#!forum/hangouts).

SMS Messages that are too long (Sprint)

Hey there,
If I send a message that is too long (like it breaks up into 2 messages after the 1st messages character limit is exceeded), the message will not send. I am using a 3rd party, 8sms, because I don't like utilizing Hangouts as my SMS and chat.
I'm sure they will blame it on me using the 3rd party app, because thats what they did last time I had a problem (not related to this)
Anyone else having this problem? Is it Nexus 5 wide, or just Sprint?
Thank you so much.

Sprint rep not very helpful. Did a bunch of phone resetting, changing the MSID, etc... to no avail.

I haven't tried any third-party SMS apps yet because I'm mostly happy with Hangouts, but it really annoys me that I can't even send a text with more than 160 characters. On previous phones, you could set up the messaging app to let you type to your heart's content and have the app automatically split the message up into 160-character texts. In Hangouts, it actually won't let you type more than 160 characters. You have to send the text and then start another one. There's no way that I can find to change this.

Yeah, that is what I meant by it not allowing me to do it on Hangouts either. It is truly annoying as ****. 8SMS is really just like the old messaging that we used to have before these updates. I am overall happy with it, just not with not being able to send a message over 160 characters, because it fails.
Does anyone else have a 3rd party SMS app that they like? I tried another one in the Play Store, but it had heaps of ads pop up after sending a text message... I gave that the swift delete quick!
Thanks for everyones help. This forum rocks!
I tried an app called Textra, just to see if it was 8SMS causing the problem.
Textra did the same thing...
I figured out the problem of why it wouldn't send text messages over 160 characters in 8SMS.
In the older versions of Android, on the messenger, it would automatically change the over 160 SMS to an MMS, and you could keep typing. By default, in 8SMS, this wasn't enabled. I had to enable it in settings.
Problem fixed.
Hopefully anyone who uses 8SMS will find this post. I highly recommend this app. I am not a fan of hangouts for SMS.
This is standard for SMS, some phones trick you into thinking there is no limit by not showing you the count or the limit and automatically combining everything or converting the SMS into another protocol (like imessage)
More info here:
http://www.wirelessdevnet.com/channels/sms/features/sms.html
Specifically from the site:
"The messages are limited by size. An SMS message can’t exceed 160 characters. (BTW this limitation is due to the limitation in the MAP protocol in GSM) In case of longer e-mails or information service messages like news, the messages need to broken down into more than one message. The need to break the messages into several smaller segments could make SMS comparatively costlier in comparison to GPRS (for the same kind of service). Also, This doesn’t look very appealing on a mobile device!
However
MMS (talked about later) would remove the limitation of small messages"
Personally I think in the year 2013/2014 and the technologies we have I'm sure it is possible to change this limitation by introducing a new SMS method or protocol/etc but that requires someone to actually spend the time and money to introduce a new standard that replaces one that has been in place for a very long time
I was having the same issue. There are two options to get long text messages to work on Sprint. I'm also using 8sms (great messaging app, really recommend it over Hangouts).
The first, like someone else stated, is to select the option to convert long messages to picture messages. Make sure you select anything over 1 message long to be converted.
The second option that I discovered is to enable "split counter" in the settings. This will split the texts and send them as consecutives SMS messages without converting them to MMS messages. Hope this helps.

[Q] MMS in Apps other than Hangouts

Hello all,
For starters, some preliminaries:
ROM: ViperRom 3.2.1
Firmware: Latest (4.4.4)
Kernel, radios: Stock
Has anyone been having trouble with group MMS beyond the Hangouts app? The Hangouts app works like silk when it comes to group MMS - I can send/receive to all my friends (regardless of whether they have a smartphone or cell phone), it can play GIFs within the thread and it doesn't deliver messages at the wrong time (a 5:09pm message gets delivered before a 5:06 pm message). The problem with Hangouts is that it is slow and has odd kinks that drive me insane (when you send a message it doesn't show it unless you exit and reenter the message thread, three second delay to display contact when searching for number). The glaring issue is that it is an app that I simply do not use for it's native purpose - which is to create Hangouts and not use SMS. Nobody I know uses Hangouts, so I only use it for SMS.
I have tried literally every SMS app there is - Handcent, GOSMS, 8SMS, Hello, Textra, ChompSMS, Evolve SMS, Messaging (stock KitKat modified), HTC Messaging.
These apps all have a consistent problem - I cannot communicate with my cell phone friends in group chats. They receive blank messages and cannot read my replies. I've tried modifiying my APN but I am unable to create a new profile in Settings>Networks>APN. This is honestly strange to me because Hangouts works so flawlessly compared to all these other apps. Any suggestions?

Have you tried Verizon Message+ ? That is what I am using and works well for me. I'm usually not a fan of Verizon Software, but the messaging app has a lot of options and doesn't seam to lag.

I tried that app. Super clunky, definitely looking for a better alternative.
Interesting.
I have been running Viper also ( until yesterday actually).
I have been using Handcent and group messaging seems to work fine. At least no one has told me otherwise.
I do notice, with Handcent that from time to time SMS/mms messages seem to get hung up for quite a few minutes( see the spinning wheel next to message). I always though that was a network issue. You have me thinking otherwise now..
I have never tried hangouts for SMS. I might give it a whirl.

Super clunky, okay. That's one way to describe it. lol. But did it work for group messaging? Have you tried a different rom? Viper is an international rom that has changes made for Verizon to work. Maybe there is a setting or library missing from Viper. Have you asked in that thread to see if anyone else has the same issues on Verizon?

I used CleanRom before this...really have no interest in switching ROMs but I see what you mean about it being international. I always had used Hangouts without compliant but it took a serious speed hit when it got updated/I updated to Viper
Tried many of them and constantly been sticking with Textra.

+1 on Textra. I had group messaging problems too until this app. There is an option under settings to use MMS for group messaging. I think it's off by default. Try switching it on and see how it goes. It fixed my probs, particularly when texting to/from iDevices.

Does textra have gif support in the message threads?

UPDATE: Some of the issues I have were actually due to me disabling animations in Developer Settings. Once I re-enabled animations, the issues with Hangouts "hanging" at the second to last message, rather then displaying my newly sent message, went away. The app also seems much smoother on the whole. I guess that disabling animations is a bigger detriment than benefit when it comes to Hangouts.
I still have the same group MMS issues in apps other than Hangout (people with basic feature phones only receive blank lines, rather than text). Hangouts remains the only texting app that works flawlessly with group MMS. It's a shame, because Textra is such a beautiful app.
