When and which of them should I wipe for flashing anything in recovery, except a ROM, since u need to clean everythibg, except the storage data for that one. So I'm aiming at things like kernel, open gapps, recovery update. Something like those, but most importantly, what should I wipe and when, if I install xprivacy through on 6.0.1 through recovery?

Hey, I'm currently on MIUI ics. I know I have to wipe/factory reset everything. But is it safe to flash on the current CWM? Or do I need to update it or something? Do I just flash the new JB rom like I would switching from MIUI to a stock ics rom? I'm a noob, sorry if this doesn't make sense.
What version of CWM are you running?
You should be fine, but it never hurts to check. You flash a JB rom just like any other. Wipe wipe wipe and flash.
The whole wipe wipe wipe is completely unnecessary. One wipe is sufficient and any additional won't do anything.
It's like saying that unless you wipe exactly 3 times the Android Gods are going to demand a human sacrifice for your phone to boot.
lol i think dvorak meant wipe cache, wipe dalvik cache, wipe data (wipe wipe wipe) but that's my take..
anyway, if you can flash MIUI ICS with whatever CWM version you currently have, you should be able to flash other JB ROM. Nandroid as always.. Goodluck!

This is what I did :
1. Boot into recovery and perform a nandroid backup of my MIUI installation.
2. Wipe.
3. Flash XenonHD 9 JB ROM + marmite 4.2 kernel.
My phone is running really smooth now. Good luck.

Yep, that's it. Of course wiping everything 3 times would be unnecessary.

if you get a cluster f*#@ of problems then clean install. It isn't that hard. Use Titanium Backup and good to go.
In Recovery:
1. wipe data/factory reset (this formats /data, /cache and .android_secure on sd)
2. format /system, /boot
this leaves you with only bootloader, recovery and radio...dalvik-cache resides on /data, so it's gone already.
3. flash rom
4. gapps & custom-kernel (if needed). No need to let the phone boot & settle before flashing them (most custom-kernels have a script that automatically wipes /cache & dalvik during kernel-install)
5. reboot
6. Run TB -- restore missing apps with data --1st option under restore
just updating rom:
1. flash rom-zip
2. wipe /cache and dalvik-cache
3. reboot
Do this before reporting any issues on the thread since the problems are often related to this and not the ROM or kernel.

Im using TWRP. I know that I need to wipe the Cache, Dalvik Cache and system. Do I also choose the Factory Reset option? How about Internal Storage? Then there is the Format Data option. Which of these should I do?

If you do a factory reset, you don't have to worry about wiping anything else.
As for what to wipe for installing a custom ROM, it depends. EOS recommends a factory reset when you are flashing their ROMs going from any other type of ROM, including stock. If your on ICS, to jellybean, factory reset. 4.1 to 4.2, factory reset. One nightly to the newer one, you don't have too.
Internal storage is not something you want to wipe... that is any pictures, files, music etc. etc. that you have on the tablet, it will be the same as when you unlock the bootloader, you lose EVERYTHING!! Factory reset, you won't lose anything that isn't on the system partition.
Make sure you are on the latest version of the recommended recoveries

when i flash a rom i always wipe cache, factory reset, and wipe system. those steps will erase everything from the old rom? any custom kernel? i know it does not do anything to the radio. what else doesnt wipe? what does it wipe? i am soff 1.09
wiping everything in custom recovery does not wipe the kernel ie boot.img. it also does not affect any firmware related things, it only wipes rom related things like cache,data,dalvik,system,sdcard
Was wondering if I could get some advice on the best way to install a couple patches in zip format for a rom I have...
Do I flash the rom as usual, re-boot and let it simmer a while, then go back into recovery, wipe and install the patches?
Or can I flash the rom, then wipe and install patches without re-booting until after all is done?
Also, If more than one patch, the same question applies as far as a re-boot, that is, do I need to re-boot each time after each patch or can I install the zips all at once, then re-boot?
And finally a related, much discussed issue, and that has to do with wiping the system when flashing...
Is there any harm in wiping the dalvik and cache right after a fresh rom install or rom restore from backup BEFORE re-boot?
The idea would be to have the new installation, regardless of a new system or a restored backup sitting on a clean base, as I understand, the install creates some junk in the cache, that's why it is suggested to wipe the system before you do a backup...

This is probably the wrong place to ask but I wanted to know what I should be wiping in TWRP before I flash a new ROM. It's been a long time since I flashed a fresh ROM (I'm on CM11S for quite some time) and I can't remember what I wipe to give myself a clean start.

Depends what you mean by clean start, if you mean you want fresh out of the box experience (no apps, no pictures, no anything etc) goto advanced wipe and select everything apart from USB-OTG.
If you want to retain all of your media (pictures, videos etc) the standard wipe in TWRP should cover you (wipes dalvic, cache and data), you don't need to wipe system as TWRP will wipe it automatically before it installs any custom rom.
