Definitive Battery Thread

Hello everyone!
I've spent the past week doing as much research as possible into what type of battery to buy for my G2 and i've come across alot of information to say the least. Alot of opinions, alot of useless data, and some useful data. I just wanted to summarize this info for everyone. And add any new information that people post in the thread below, including battery life data.
Popular Batteries:
- The Mugen 1800mAh - $45 (1400mAh in testing)
- The Senido 1750mAh - $50 (1400mAh in testing)
- The HTC 1500mAh 35H00123-11M (-00M).. Also known as the TP2/EVO battery - $7 (1500mAh in testing)
- The CHICHITEC 1800mAh - $20/each or $40 for 2 + Charger (untested)
Research:
- Mugen and Seido seem to have EXTREMELY inconsistent mAh ratings, HTC seems to be the most consistent.
- On the other hand, trying to compare these battery assuming constant maximum power draw is a little unfair.
The one thing that seems constant is that HTC's battery's perform as expected in every environment and over time, whereas the third partys seem to be able to pull values closer (somewhat) to what they advertise under certain conditions. Not to mention that we have no knowledge regarding the long-term affects of the 'tuning' that these third party companies have done.
We gotta realize that most battery's are using the same cell or the same knock-off cell, and we can't really expect to much of an increase in mAh in this battery form-factor.
Installation Issues:
A lot of these battery's will need to be modified to fit our phones in one way or another as they're meant for the EVO 4G/Incredible/TP2/MyTouch3gSlide/CDMAHero.. Even the ones that are labeled as "G2 Compatible" might not be as a lot of the 'higher capacity' cells have identical dimensions.
Removing the Wrapper around the battery might assist with door bulge
If you feel like you have to aggressively 'wedge' the battery in then you might want to remove/modify the little nub's at the bottom of the battery near the contacts using nail clippers/dremel/knife. Otherwise you run the risk of damaging the cell-side charging contacts.
Some of the hardcore guys in here have sanded down the battery to have a good fit
The 'fit' differs from phone to phone depending both on the dimensions of each specific battery (not the actual brand or company, but each individual battery seems to be a little bit different) and the G2 Door.
If you leave the door bulging indefinitely it might damage the door in some way, it's recommended that you remove the door and just use a case if it's a major problem for you.
Tips:
- After installing the new battery, remember to reset the battery calibration through your recovery. This affects how many times you feel the need to "cycle it through" before achieving optimal battery life.
- Don't believe the temperature sensor on 3rd Party batteries
- Individual "Before and After" stories are cool, but not that useful considering all the variables involved with the hardware, the radio & signal, the software, and the human being (placebo affect). Aggregating all the data together does give us some picture of whats going on.
- The best tell for battery quality is the weight of the battery compared to your stock one, although this is not a guaranteed method.
Conclusion
After reading through as many threads as I could find regarding this topic, It seems that the CHICHITEC batteries have come to be the most popular across all these HTC phones. While the 1500mAh HTC EVO battery seems like the best deal with the most consistent power output.
The average perceived benefit using these batteries seems to be between 30-20%.

Thanks, this really is usefull and spares us who are still trying to figure out wich battery they want, alot of time!

For CHICHITEC 1800mAh battery, is it safe to shave off the piece allowing the battery to be a perfect fit? Such as trying to use a nail clipper and clip it off.

All I wanted to do was add my experience. I went out on a limb and bought the 2000mAh batteries from Galilio.
I took the wrapper off and trimmed the tabs and have been using them for about 3 months now.
My battery door does have a slight bulge to it but I can live with it.
The other day I decided to go back to my factory battery because I now have a charger by my bed, one in my truck and one at work. I have to say, I am spoiled now. My G2 is loaded up and running like crazy and my factory battery lasted like 2 hours where my Galilio battery goes for about 9 to 10 hours.
I text ALOT and facebook runs all day, I use the navigation on a daily basis and play tons of games.
Hope my 2 cents helped.

sweet i am still breaking the battery in hopefully its good as urs, btw what rom are you running?

I'm thinking about getting Mugen 1800mAH, but people are having mixed results. Maybe one day we'll get HTC made OEM battery.

CM 6.1.1 I absolutely love it. Tried the CM 7 but don't like it yet.

im on 10 hours of uncharge, so far its been light use, uncluding 1 hour and 30 min of GPS some texting, surfing and HTC updates

Thanks for compiling this info. I've had greatly improved life with the 1800mAh Mugen, but wasn't aware of the inconsistency some people are seeing.

I would say that the Mugen 1800 performs like a 1400 is an exaggeration.

Please run the same tests on the stock HTC 1300 mAh battery for reference.

Inspire 4G Batteries..

Thought I would start a battery thread just to see what everyone thinks. I have noticed the battery is 1230 mah and thats a little small for my taste. I have heard nothing bad about battery life, but thought I would start this thread to throw some options out there on where to buy hi-cap batteries. Also if anyone has experience with a site or certain make of battery, that is made for this phone POST IT UP. I haven't really been able to find anything.....

You haven't heard anything bad about the battery? I have heard a whole bunch of bad things about the battery. I have also heard a whole bunch of decent things about the battery which leads me - and I'm sure many other android users - to believe that with SMART management and usage, there is no reason the battery shouldn't last one day.
If there was a proven extended battery greater than 1300mah on the market right now, I would have had one ordered and delivered to my doorstep already. However, because of the hardware design, this may prove difficult for manufacturers.
My plan is to get the phone, set it up, possibly root - and then evaluate if the battery is adequate - as many had said it is. If it is REALLY bad, I mean frustrating, leaving me stranded in a bad part of town with no cell phone... then I will return it.

Thats kind of what I had planned as well. I may also put a rom on it if they start coming out soon enough, because they have obviously shown to drastically improve battery on many many devices. BTW did find a couple batteries on ebay, up to 1600mah but obviously there is no way to tell if they are worth a dang or not.

They're not worth a dang from what I've read. Crap manufacturers label batteries as they'd like - good luck proving them wrong.
I'm looking out for a legitimate battery, not from ebay, that is over 1300mah. Will post if said battery is found.

I saw a review of the seidio "extended" capacity battery for the dhd and results were not very good. The battery is listed as a 1600mah, but it's true capacity was only about 85% of what it was rated. That percentage fluctuated as well and was some times as low as 70%. The HTC batteries while only being 1230mah were close to 95% of it's rated. So it seems that the stock batteries are the best choice.

Looks like I may be purchasing a stock battery, and a car charger.

well, I've read that the desire and inspire are basically the same phone, if that is the case than I know, personally, 4 people who own this battery and have said it adds about 2 hours of life with moderate to heavy usage.

I think you just pay them... it will convert US to pounds.
I ordered a pair of jeans from France this year and you paid as you would anything else... it just converts the euro into US and thats what it takes from your bank.

I would invest in extra chargers. I picked up an inspire today and that battery door is almost impossible to get off. It would be an act in frustration to try to change that battery even once! From what I have seen the battery is holding up pretty well. I crushed the phone for a few hours and downloaded about 20 apps on wifi. The level dropped of course but it held up better than my Nexus one is holding up these days.

^ That is one option I've used with good success. And the extrernal battery is just a USB connection so I can use it for lots of stuff. It recharges the internal battery at the same time, an added bonus.

I am thinking about switching to Inspire from HD2. Can anyone confirm that the Inspire 4g uses same batteries as HD2?

I ordered a spare from an AT&T corporate store today. The receipt lists it as 1400mah. I assume it's going to be the stock 1230 though. We shall see in a few days.

Your best bet would be mugen 1300mah battery. That's the one I am using and last 1-1.5hours more than stock.

replacement battery

can anyone recommend a uk supplier for a bp6x battery that the milestone 2 recognises? or ideally a seller on ebay as i prefer to use paypal? i tried one that said "genuine motorola battery" when it arrived i plugged it in and the dreaded "?" appeared and the phone refused to recognise it. so it was obviously a fake. almost all the listings ive seen appear to be copies. i dont mind a non original aslong as its recognised by the phone and works... the only original battery seller i can see are second hand ones and id rather have a new one if possible. thanks

Rule of thumb is don't buy batteries off ebay.
I was considering purchasing second hand ones, and even considered getting a droid 2 battery second hand, so at least it might be genuine moto, but thought better of it and feel validated with my choice.
At the end of the day, the battery can potentially fry your entire phone the second you connect it. You can't seem to get them direct from moto, but I'd suggest contacting your service provider and see if they can order genuine parts.
I suggest getting a portable charger for those outings where you know you will need some more battery life. Get a car charger, and if possible, a spare charger for work. Than most of your bases are covered and safer too

I'd purchased 2 from a seller on ebay and both work fine - no ? icon whatsoever, even though they're clearly fakes (no hologram). Will give it a week and see how they're lasting, and ill pass on the seller ID. They're handy to have as they can easily fit into a wallet and do wonders if you're getting tore into the Friday night scene.

ive got two spare chargers, and a car charger DreadpirateDan but my original is getting a bit knackered. itll jump from 80% to 40% in one go. then 40% down to nothing. doesnt last anywhere near aslong as it used too. so definitely time for a replacement. i got my phone on ebay so dont have a service provider to contact.

Holy moley that's crazy as, what do battery diagnostics tell you of your battery health etc? (if they even work, lol)
Also, have you tried battery calibration? That issue just sounds crazy, perhaps that might help?
EDIT:
Maybe you should get AnTuTu Tester off the market and run a battery test (will require your phone to be out of action for a few hours rapidly discharging though )
I scored 358 and am placed just above HTC HD2 and below LG Optimus 2X. The Galaxy S2 doesn't seem to have scored much more than me going by the bar graph - I've allways thought my battery to be shocking and potentially damaged health wise. So maybe that could give you an idicator as to how it's holding up, just for curiosity sake.

yeh tried that. the batterys just old thats all. theyre only good for a 1000 charges or something. so charging it couple times a day for over a year soon adds up. as they age the voltage becomes more erratic and it doesnt hold its charge.

I bought 2 original BP7X from ebay (and one bigger cover) and they are perfect.

BP7X is the way forward buddy. Can abuse the phone all day long and have 50% by the end with custom ROM and Juicedefender. I'm sure with light use you could get a week out of the thing.

ms2 is enough busty :F with bp7x and backcover is like to have a notebook in your pants.
i wish a batery that doesn't needs a backcover and works good without any block

This was were I got my batteries from guys. I've tested them both quite extensively over the holiday season and they have lasted well. Has proved to be a good investment actually as I sucked all the juice out of my phone taking 720 video at a gig over NYE and needed the phone to regroup after it. Hope this helps you. I also got one of those docks with the battery slot in the back to charge them up as a wee christmas present to myself too. I'm getting geeky in my auld age.

Yup. No problems on both counts there.

I have to say that I purchased one of those BP7x 1800mAh batteries and I am not impressed at all.
It barely makes 2 days without data connection always on.
Still I am using the phone underclocked at 800 mhz with screen on and everything forced at 300 when the screen is of wit setcpu.
It takes about 3 hours to burn 10% of charge

Well it only adds like 30% (or something?) extra life.. so if your normal life span used to be about 36 hours then 46 (barely 2 days) is just about right.

for replacement battery i would higly recommend "mugen" batteries. their average performance exceeds the OEMs. But if you go for the heavyweight usage, try their 3300mAh [HLI-A855XL] for milestone. not cheap though compared to ebay deals, but worth it quality wise.

2days! lol. ive never gone more than 24 hours even with the original battery fresh out of the box from the day i bought the phone. i can only dream of going two days without a charge

I have a Droid 2 BP7X and it works fine in my MS2. I'd be wary of the Chinese writing and the very cheap price on the link you provided though. And you will need a new battery cover (mine was supplied with one).

Has anybody found a battery case that works?

I looked all over eBay and all I see are cases for the international HOX and I really want to be able to have one that works for our phone. I remember mugen mentioning that they would have one out already, but they said that over a month ago. Are companies not making it because HTC's sales in the recent quarter was extremely low compared to the projected numbers? If anybody has found one please let me know I love everything about this phone but I hate lugging around a charger, and I don't always have access or the time to plug it in.
PS I don't want to hear anybody come in and say they get 4 hours of screen time blah blah blah on whatever mods they do. That's great, but 4 hours of screen time equals about 6 hours of total usage which is only half the day for me. I'm a college student and I do a lot on my phone whether it be in class taking notes, or on conference calls.
And I'm not complaining about the phone, just lack of this particular accessory. I believe this is a damn near perfect phone I just want the juice to make it even more perfect!

There's no battery cases that are either good or work for the S4 variant as the pins are placed differently.
There are however external battery packs that are relatively small and provide a punch. Had one for the Sammy Vibrant and was super easy to hide in back pack, as you are a college student.

+1 I want something that can at least double my battery life. That would be great.
EDIT: they reviews on this look solid! I would like to know how many full charges it would do on our phones.

Haven't fully tested, but judging by the MaH, I would expect to be able to charge it two or three times over at least.

Actually judging by the mah I'd say it would charge it around 4 times.
10,000/1,800 is a little more than 5 so its safe to assume 4 times over.

These external chargers actually lose quite a bit of power in translation... I think I remember reading it's a 35% loss but don't remember exactly, so that 10000 mah is really more like 6500 for the phone (somewhere along those lines, anyways).

Do you happen to know if that 35% is per use or overall?

Any updates on this front? Went to chicago recently and the daily murdering of my battery life had me itching for a good charger case!

Well I just ordered it. I've had little luck with off brand batteries but, My phone use to last longer so though I'd give it a try.
Will let you know, says it ships form USA shouldn't take to long to get?

i'm still waitin for the battery

Got it about a week ago. Came with a star bit screw driver that was the wrong size. I was at work so I just broke the 4 little plastic corners to remove battery. Had to take off some of the white plastic covering the battery to get the NFC coil off.
It's lasting twice as long as the old stock battery. Lasted 8 plus hrs as a computer. Clean install, downloaded apps, setup, and nandroid backup etc.
Use as a Media Device, and a "Phone". I think it was worth it!

Is it exactly the same size? Also what country do you live?

How much screen on time do you get? If it is over 6h, that would be very good.

I received my battery a few days ago, and a nice toolkit from Amazon yesterday:

I had a lot of trouble prying the phone's rear cover off, but fortunately got some help from my teenage son. We used this excellent video:

Better prying tools would have been helpful, although my toolkit is excellent in all other respects. I think that the video omits a 14th screw which must be removed (after the rear cover is removed), near the center-bottom.
On to the matter at hand: I replaced the battery on my spare phone, which runs stock ICS and some (but not much) software.
Since some of the better-regarded battery benchmarks wouldn't install from Google Play, I used Battery Benchmark ( https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.batterybench ) on that phone, prior to replacing the battery. From a full charge, after 20,121 seconds, there was 25% charge remaining. Battery Benchmark said that it detected a cheating attempt.
After replacing the battery I ran the same software. Again it only made it to 25% discharge, saying that it detected a cheating attempt. We made it a bit farther, to 22,734 seconds. This is only a 13% improvement, but it seems to me that the screen brightness (100% with the new battery) had been dimmer with the old battery; perhaps one of my kids or I increased it during the intervening days.
It's too much of a hassle to swap the batteries and go through this testing again. I was hoping/expecting at least a 50% improvement, and perhaps that is really present, but is "hidden" by my sloppy testing regimen.
It certainly takes a long time to fully charge this battery, but I didn't run any comparisons.
I hope this helps someone; if you order a battery and repeat this exercise, I recommend setting the screen to 100% brightness using both the old and new batteries, prior to running your benchmarks. If it's easy for you to run an out-of-the-box ROM (stock or custom, but with no additional apps installed), that would also yield more reliable test results.

If you have a screen benchmark that you'd like me to run, then I'll be happy to do it with the new battery, using stock ICS. Swapping batteries was pretty time-consuming for me, so I'm not willing to do that again. But we can compare my results with the new battery to your results with your original battery.

received the Battery yesterday.
45 days from ordering
removed the plasticpackage and: Contacs are broken

anybody dare to peel the gold sticker off ?
We can see the which model/capacity of battery was used in most cases.
I haven't had any good experiences from those gold sticker cheap chinese batteries, and most of them are not that good compared to the stock battery of equivalent models.

Please show your battery stats (like in post #8) along with the screen on time for a full discharge, i.e. from fully charged to <10%.

Wow. That seems like outright fraud. Did the seller have any response (assuming you contacted them)?

yes I contacted the seller. I want full refund. Under the label is the same battery as original photon battery.

Only a very high quality battery manufacturer can increase the output of a cell of the same physical size. Motorola & other OEM manufacturers would have built batteries with the max capacity possible for the given space.
Unless you find a way to increase the physical size of the battery, you won't get any improvement out of a 'cheap' replacement, most likely a reduction in performance.
If it's cheap, and from a questionable manufacturer/supplier, it will be rubbish.
