So I'll be getting a new Verizon m8 here soon. And since I've never had a htc phone before but I'm not new to rooting or flashing stuff.
I've been reading up on stuff here and around the web. I was wondering if someone could give me some advice before I jump in half cocked. When I get the phone should I use sunshine first? And does that get me s-off and unlocked bootloader? Then after that do I install twrp and then flash super su? Is there anything I should do between sunshine and twrp, and anything between twrp and super su? Anything to backup if I have problems.
Assuming you want to run the stock rooted Rom then that's it. If you wanted to run one of the number of custom roms then you would basically flash those in place of super su in your list.
Also I would recommend flashing twrp via fastboot and not by the TWRP app.

So I don't ever need to flash super su if I flash a custom Rom? Just want to make sure I'm getting this right, both of my LG phone's I needed to have super su flashed to do anything.

Most, if not all, custom roms will come pre-rooted. This doesn't apply to the ruus which aren't really custom roms. If you do happen to flash a rom that isn't rooted then you can just flash the super su zip in recover as you said earlier.

Congrats on the upcoming new M8.
Once you free it with Sunshine you will love it.
I bought an M9 launch day and never used it (it's literally brand new) as the M8 was that good.
I actually have a VZW HTC 10 - S-OFF as well and I'm still on my M8 while I transition.

Yeah I thought about getting a vzw 10, but I would have to wait till January otherwise have to pay full price. Which it's not in the budget right now lol
So I was able to pick up a new retail vzw m8 off of swappa for pretty cheap
And I've been trying to read up on htc stuff, and I have no problems with paying for sunshine. But do I need to root the phone first, or does sunshine take care of everything?
And after getting twrp on it, should I back anything up first before modding or flashing anything?
Also if I want to try kit Kat roms do I have to be on stock kit Kat firmware, and vice versa with lollipop or marshmallow roms?
Sorry for all the questions, just don't want to mess anything up hopefully lol

It's a good choice, M8 over M9. The HTC 10 is actually pretty cheap on swappa as well for what it is.
Sunshine does it all, just download the app, run it and it does everything, it won't allow you to pay unless it 100% works, it's a great app, they've done an amazing job.
No need to back anything up as you can always just run the RUU.
If you want to run KK ROMs just flash KK firmware and then ROM in custom recovery, and when want back to MM, do the same. Flash MM firmware and ROM.
You can even flash KK ROM make a nandroid then do same w MM to switch back n forth. KK may even run w MM firmware.

Hey everyone,
I'm kind of a noob when it comes to development for the HOX and HTC in general; I previously had a Galaxy S II and it was incredibly easy to root and flash custom roms. I just had a couple of questions regarding rooting for the HOX:
1. I'm currently on 1.85, and I know that means I can still root. However, the 2.20 update hasn't even popped up on my phone. Also, whenever I check for updates, it just returns to the previous screen, like there's no update available. Does this mean I can still root using the 1.85 one click exploit?
2. How "safe" is rooting/unlocking the bootloader on the HOX? I know unlocking the bootloader is not officially supported on the AT&T version, and that you have to get SuperCID in order to unlock it. With all this modification, is it pretty safe to root and unlock the HOX? I really don't have the money to spend on another phone if I somehow brick it lol.
Thanks!

Good to know, thanks! I thought it might still work but wasn't sure. I see... What would be an example of a soft brick? I've read that if a problem occurs, you can run an RUU to restore it to factory default. Also, I don't have much experience with ADB either lol. I've read Gunnyman's primer though.

Got lucky ended up with a 1.85 firmware device from att refurbished yesterday. I just want to double check that I'm not missing anything.
So from stock I need to use the one click root below first, then after this use the supercid bl unlock method and I'm good? Then I'll be able to get twrp recovery on there and start flashing?
One click root
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1644167
Supercid unlock bootloader
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1672284
Is there any files or numbers I need to back up before doing anything?
Anything I need to avoid doing that would cause me to lose root permanently?
Use the manual root method, seems to work better for most, myself included.
Ya what he said. I tried to root my phone 4x using that method it did not work. Finally used another method I found on the web. Try this one. Www.onexroot.com. there you will find the tutorial of how to. Not the one click root method. But the other. Also tells u how to unlock bootloader. I had to open 2 windows for this. I also went to xda and take a look at this one " there both the same except you got the step by step video tutorial .

Oh and a peace of advice don't do what I almost Did...DON'T FLASH AN INTERNATIONAL ROM!!!. just stay in the "At&t, rogers one xl, talar" or whatever its calld. You'll have a $700 paperweight

Thanks everyone, I'll use the suggested manual root, already saw some bad stories of people flashing international roms. I've got the att forum bookmarked so I won't accidentally flash an international rom.
I saw people talking about safely upgrading to 2.20 firmware to keep root, is there any reason to go to 2.20 if I plan on flashing cm10 or AOKP or is that just if I want the latest stock ROM with root?

Don't unless you like flashing a boot IMG every time before a Rom via fast boot or terminal emulator
If you were a bit silly like me, perhaps you flashed the JB OTA on your Telus HOX before you rooted, unlocked, got SuperCID and S-Off. I didn't have much luck searching the forum for exact steps on how to get that stuff after taking the OTA. All the info is here, but I was confused what applied to my Telus phone and what would work even after the JB OTA. So I figured I'd detail my steps here in case someone else wants a detailed guide. Obviously the credit for everything below goes to the original authors of the techniques. I'm just linking stuff.
Unlock
1.Register at HTCDev and follow the directions to unlock your bootloader. Its pretty straightforward. You don't need to download the whole huge 300+ Android SDK. You can just get the adb-fastboot package from this thread.
Flash Recovery
I flashed TWRP with one-click via this AIO toolkit. There is probably tons of other ways to do it.
Root
Not sure its possible to root the stock JB unless you install a different ROM. So I did a system reset in TWRP and the flashed the Viper XL ROM. Its pre-rooted.
SuperCID
Its quite easy - just follow this guide exactly.
S-Off
Follow this guide and you shouldn't have a problem.
Once you have all that, you can downgrade your touch firmware. The reason to do this is if you want to install AOSP-based ROMs like CyanogenMod or AOKP. I haven't done that yet because I'm pretty happy with ViperXL. If you want to stick with Sense-based ROMs it isn't necessary to downgrade.
As a final note, once you've got ViperXL and S-Off I'd highly recommend trying the ElementalX Kernel.

Yup, if you managed to unlock the bootloader then you're clear to go all the way to s-off (and you should).
I have a htc one S , but this SuperCID doesn't work on my device.
Does it work after the JB OTA with the One X ?
I'm unable to use my Phone without using custom ROMs, 'cause I can't flash any RUU (CID is T-MOB101).
(I had battery problems after JB OTA-Update)
This isn't the One S forum. I'd advise asking in the appropriate forum.

If I do this, will I lose my SIM unlock? I am using an unlocked Telus One X with Fido. Thanks.
You can s-off. You just need to change yiur cid to 11111111 first. Aosp roms are all in the original android development section of this forum.
I believe carrier unlock is done at the bootloader layer so it should not affect your sim unlock

I am planning to get my One (M8) replaced through insurance, and have waited to root/mod so I can do this. As a result, I haven't paid much attention to the forums. If I get it replaced. I'm assuming it will probably come with the latest firmware. Is the latest firmware fully customizable (root, s-off, unlocked bootloader, custom roms)?
Thanks so much!
Maybe. Subtle variances in hardware make the difference. No way of telling before you try.
Right now Weaksauce 2 + Sunshine seems to work for most on the latest firmware.
Sunshine 3 is supposed to be released shortly and hopefully will work on this and the next update....
So as of now, with the latest firmware, it's possible to install custom ROMs?

Yes - if Sunshine works on your phone. See above ^^^^^
Just try it. Sunshine will tell you if it'll work and only then you have to pay for it.
Well like I said, I don't have my new phone yet, I plan on replacing my current one via insurance. I haven't updated my current phone to the latest firmware. I don't see any posts by people who have been unable to root their phone, but I also haven't been on xda in forever. Have you seen anyone who hasn't been able to get the current methods to work? Thanks again!
jcase says it works on 4.4.4 without reservations.... Good enough for me.

Hi Guys,
I've been doing searches on here all night and I'm more confused than ever.
I just got a like new m8 that's still on 4.4.2.
I just rooted it with weaksauce. I would like to update to 5.0.1 and be able to root. I'm not sure if I need for s-off or unlocked bootloader, but I think I read some of these should be done before updating to lollipop.
I was planning to update with the ruu update from HTC website.
I think I read that I can't do the ruu update if I'm unlocked or s-off, but I can't unlock or s-off after updating to 5.0.1
Can someone who knows what's up with this clarify things for me? I don't want to update without being sure I have everything set right in advance.

I would S-OFF on KK then take the OTA to 5.0.1
That sounds like good advice and what I would do if it wasn't going to cost 50 to s-off our two phones. Our budget is tight after just buying phones at 150 bucks each. So until there is a less expensive s-off method I think were stuck with rooted Kit Kat. We just need root for basic stuff like titanium backup and to turn on tethering (which I hope I can do on this phone).

You do realize that without s-off your root will be pretty worthless for most things thanks to write protection in place right?

I was not aware of that. Will I not be able to use titanium backup to restore my apps and data? How about unlocking tethering?

I'll add to the choir here. Do yourself a favor and get s-off before doing anything. Weaksauce works but the changes only last until you reboot. With s-off, you can do anything. And yes, Titanium Backup will restore your apps and data. As for the tethering, you can flash a rom that has it enabled or you can just run stock and "unlock" it yourself. It's a simple edit of a file. It's well worth the $25 it costs. Do it if you can.

We are all new at some point in time and if there is anything I can suggest it is to listen to dottat. The kat knows his biz.
That $50 you "can't afford" . When you take one of those OTA updates unintentionally and then realize that not even $5000 can get you the s-off you so desperately desire for TB, tethering, or whatever your fancy is....it's pennies my good friend. You are so very lucky to be on KK, as that can still be dealt with. LP is another animal. To my knowledge there has been no way to get s-off/unlock bootloader. Take it form me, a flash junkie - you want s-off. You want an unlocked bootloader. You want root. Once you have it you never go back.
Otherwise you should have gotten an iphone.
These words are not to meant to condescend or talk down, it is to encourage you to take what you can while you still can.
I just found this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/verizon-htc-one-m8/help/verizon-htc-one-m8-lollipop-root-t3072841/page5
So it looks like you can get root on lollipop now.
If I am rooted by this method and S-on can I use titanium backup for full backups and restoring apps? Also, can I turn on tethering with sqlite editor. Or will I still need S-off to do these two things?
I doubt I'll be changing roms or anything advanced, just need my Titanium Backup and tethering.
I also see that Sunshine now supports lollipop, so if I do decide I need it later, I guess I can always do it later.

You won't be able to do what you want.

I'm not sure how you got that out of the last sentence ....Did you read all of the post? :
"We do not currently Support the VERIZON HTC M9, nor Verizon m8 running 5.0.x (4.4.4 and below are good to go). We are working it, no ETAs, no HINTS, NO DETAILS, NO UPDATES!! Please don't ask about it"
Your phones are yours to do with as you choose of course, but if you want to take advantage of TB and tethering in the manner in which you hope to, you'll need s-off. As dottat has pointed out once again, and as I've already said, you've come this far and you are lucky enough to have found two phones with the 4.x firmware still on them, you'd be throwing all that away in the HOPES that one day you can get that exploit - and you'll STILL have to pay $25 for it IF they do.
I read that there was S-off support for lollipop at the top of this post in red lettering http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2792487
Am I reading it wrong? It's confusing because below that it says "We do not currently Support the VERIZON HTC M9, nor Verizon m8 running 5.0.x (4.4.4 and below are good to go). We are working it, no ETAs, no HINTS, NO DETAILS, NO UPDATES!! Please don't ask about it"

The sunshine app itself does not officially support it. You must get root first via the kingroot...which is fairly unstable root. It takes a number of tries which for most people is tough.
You are really setting out on a tough path if you don't at least get yours s-off.
We have already given you enough justification at this point I believe you simply need to make a decision and go with it.

! What he said!
Both the M8 and M9 are unleashed after you have them S-0ffed. In addition to getting Wifi Tether,
you can modify things like Power Saver settings and other fun things. You can experiment with things
safely and obtain a faster phone that gets better battery life than bloated stock.
Devs post great custom roms that you can sample. Honestly, I like the 'new' look of my phone rotating
thru the different roms available here on xda.
Def worth the effort to S-0ff.
I got both phones S-off this week. I'm going to install dottat's prerooted 5.0.1 on them now. Crossing my fingers that I do it right.
Just want to thank everyone that posted for the great advice.
Me and my girlfriend can't wait to get on some modern phones, we're using droid 4 and droid razr that are grinding to a halt and barely function.
