Need serious expert help here... - Verizon Galaxy S 5 Android Development

My VZW rooted 4.4.4 GS5 decided to shut off, and reboot into recovery. Had TWRP with SS installed about 3 weeks ago, and all was working EXCELLENT, without any problems. I've been using this thing rooted and debloated for about 2 or more years. I have never tried to install any other custom ROMs. All I did was debloat the VZW crap off of it. I tried SS in the past, but it did not seem to do anything, so I uninstalled it, so I thought.
It appears as though through recovery, that it has been wiped.
The ROM installed was the 4.4.4, which all I wanted to do was debloat a couple years ago, which I did. Now the phone seems to have taken a crap, and I can't seem to get it to do anything. There is probably about 70% battery to play with. I can get it booted to recovery, but nothing else. I attempted to sideload the 4.4.4 firmware, but was unsuccessful. Maybe I don't know what I am doing. When I originally rooted, I used Odin to downgrade to 4.4.4, per instructions I found. But now, I don't know what to do.
Can someone please hold my hand here, and PM or email me so I can get this phone up and running again? This is both my personal and business phone. Please PM me, or email to [email protected]
Thank you.

Can you get into Download mode? If so, from there you should be able to Odin flash firmware located at sammobile's site.

It will boot to Recovery mode, and give me the options to install via ADB, from external, etc. Not sure if I know exactly what you are meaning by d/l mode.
It obviously does not boot normally.
When it boots to recovery, my options are reboot system, apply update from 1. ADB, 2. External, 3. Cache, or the two wipe options.
That is as far as it will go now.

Just put batt back in, connected USB cord from PC and tried to boot. Up top, in red Secure Fail: Recovery. Then a msg on the screen. System software not authorized by VZW has been found on your phone. Please turn off and go to a VZW store for help.
When it does turn on, it goes to the Samsung screen and says Custom, with the unlocked padlock. It has displayed that since the day I rooted, back about two years ago, but has always booted through.
Now it is going back to Recovery, and gives me those 5 previous options for installing / recovery. But that's where I am stuck, and need a little (a lot) of expertise and guidance.

Pull battery, put battery back in , then hold power, volume down and home at same time. If it boots to download mode then use Odin

I don't think it boots to d/l mode. It boots to Recovery, then gives me the options that I previously listed; ABD, External, or cache. I don't believe that ADB is d/l mode, is it?

It only boots to recovery.

You tried to boot to download mode with battery pulled - volume down, power, home button?

Okay, now it seems like I 'might' be getting somewhere. Yes, now the battery is OUT, and it did boot to ODIN, and I think it might be doing something. See?, need the hand holding. Will update, in a bit to see if this works. Thank you!

The phone says it's d/l, but there doesn't seem to be much happening on the ODIN screen.

You have to have usb hooked to pc , open Odin on pc. Then press up on phone then load factory tar to Odin

Working Root Method For 5.0 Lollipop Roms [OE1] [OG5] [OK3] [PB1] [3-3-16]

Okay, it went through what appeared to be an install, then it showed that it was upgrading, through 145, did a reboot, but now all it is doing is turning on and off, showing the GS5 screen with the Custom padlock logo.

Pull battery , boot to recovery, wipe cache. If that dont work, start over

It prepared the phone, rebooted, showed the red VZW screen, and now seems to be stuck in a boot loop. I have done a battery pull, and rebooted, but still stuck in a loop.

Should I try installing a different ROM? If yes, which one? Can you provide a link?

Already did, it's in the link

question..What if he ONLY wants to go back to his KK 4.4...all he has to do is ODIN the NCG, towelroot, install SuperSU and then flash the 4.4 and he'll be back...what is being offered may not be what he wants and then may not go back to KK if he so desires...you got to give and explain to users what will happen if done...

If you can get to DL mode, Run Odin as admin on your PC and then load up whatever stock firmware you want from HERE.

He can use this thread here which could be helpful as well. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=53447942#post53447942

It won't download anything unless you push it using Odin. Boot into recovery and give me the build number at the top. Then we can find the factory firmware to push with Odin in download mode.

Help?

I did this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2046439 then attempted to put CM10(http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1840414) on the phone. I downloaded the stable version for Verizon wireless and made sure it was correct etc. I went to TWRP and put install then went to the .zip and continued after doing that the phone resets saying "System software not authorized by Verizon Wireless has been found on your phone. Please turn off your phone and go to the nearest Verizon Wireless store for help.". I am not entirely sure what I did wrong but it will no longer let me enter twrp but it does let me go to the download screen. Did I brick it or what? Thanks.

That method did that too me as well. use this instead

You didn't brick it I had that pop up my first flash as well
Pretty sure It was because it didn't unlock the bootloader correctly.

How do I use odin to put the bootloader file on my phone since it's not an .md5 file etc.? Sorry, just don't understand.
" I held volume down/home for a few seconds and then held power. The phone booted to a mode I had not seen before (recovery/download as you said?) and I said cancel and the phone booted!"
Boot normal. use tool in first link to unlock the bootloader and CM should be up and running

also you should be able to get into recovery just let go of the volume, power, home as soon as you see the samsung logo pop up

I did the hold the volume button down/home at same time then press power but that sends me to the normal do I want to download press up to continue or down to cancel. I pressed down and it still gave me the warning. I try going to recovery but it prevents me by telling me the same message. I think it's the bootloader like you said but I don't understand how to get the file on the phone through oden. I downloaded that first link but it won't go through oden because it's not the .md5 etc and the computer isn't showing me the phone data through my files.
I am going to odin flash a stock image then re-boot.
I reflashed the phone using odin. I went through and used the "casual" rooting process which appeared to work. I went into twerp then pressed install then pressed the .zip for the CM mod. It re-loaded and now it's stuck on the CyanogenMod screen with a circle. I don't understand if it's installing or what?
I understand now why it wasn't working. Answer in here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=36341274 Anyways, now that I got CM to work. GAPPS refuses to work, it sends an error message saying that the Setup Wizard has failed. I don't understand that.
Checked to make sure the GAPPS version I downloaded was the one compatibale with the CM version, it was not so I re-downloaded the correct version now everything is working great. Thanks spitfire143 for all the help and getting me on the right track!

Upload Mode: MODEM CRASHED!

I was running the NKD Odexed ROM, and out of nowhere my phone just froze up and eventually went to Upload Mode where I was able to see that my Modem Crashed. When I pulled the batter and restarted my phone, I had no mobile service, and my Baseband and Software information both say Unknown. I cannot reboot into recovery, it just keeps bootlooping . I was able to flash the NK4 full restore, but when that loads up, even though it shows the LTE icon, my mobile data network status is set to disconnected. I also cannot boot to recovery from NK4 or any 4.4 bootloader to restore a backup. Any help would be incredibly appreciated. I'll be more than happy to buy some beers for anybody who can help me with this. Sprint is unable to help me on their end.
Edit: I should also note that I've tried Odin'ing the NKD modem several times when I am on android L, and the NK4 when on 4.4, neither do a thing to help.

I had almost the same problem yesterday and was able to restore my backup this morning.
Here's the steps I took:
1. Using Odin 3.10.0
2. Make sure your phone is completely off (battery pull if necessary).
3. Go into Download Mode (Volume Down, Home, Power), then Volume UP
4. Plug phone via USB to computer, run Odin. Make sure you have a blue ID:COM light in Odin.
5. Uncheck Auto-Reboot.
6. Odin either NE5 firmware or NK4 firmware (depending on what your nanoid was).
7. Wait till Odin gives you a PASS, unplug USB and immediately go into Recovery (Volume UP, Home, Power).
8. Restore your nanoid and reboot.
This is assuming you have an extSD card and your nanoid is on it. If you don't you'll need to get one. If you don't have a nanoid, copy the rom you want to flash onto extSD and replace step 8.
Edit: FYI, the firmware files include the modem and TWRP recovery.
Edit: My reading skills are a little slow today, if you prefer the firmware with Philz, here's NE5 and NK4 firmware with Philz.

Unfortunately, I can't count how many times I've tried this, both the firmware with TWRP, and firmware with Philz, my recovery will not boot. I get RECOVERY BOOTING.... in blue, RECOVERY IS NOT SEANDROID ENFORCING in red and Set Warranty Bit : recovery in yellow. This lasts about 30 seconds, and then it reboots to the same thing. The only way to get out of the recovery bootloop is to flash a firmware and not try to boot into recovery after, but then stuck with my modemless problem .
I can't even just go back Stock everything because I won't have service, my phone is basically a paperweight at this time.

It just seems to me that if you can get into Download Mode, it should be solvable. @tdunham, do you have anything to add that I didn't cover?
Try to do a phone reset with ##786# from the dialer. It's possible the phone cant authenticate with the network and that is why you're not getting signal.
I think this wipes internal storage but its worth a try to begin.
Next...
Pull the SD and the Sprint sim card.
Odin custom recovery and wipe absolutely everything including internal storage.
Power off the phone again, either from the recovery menu or battery pull.
Reinsert the sim card only, no SDcard, and do FULL factory Odin tar install, not the mini-bootloaders.
Let the rom boot fully but skip logging into Google and anything else and go straight into settings/backup and reset/factory reset.
Reboot again and see how it goes.
As a last resort you can try to re-pit (repartition) the phone but lets see how it goes from here.

I pulled the SD and Sim Card, and odin'd a custom recovery, but I cannot reach a custom recovery, just goes through the RECOVERY BOOTING.... boot loop explained in the OP. From there I've already done everything else close to 50 times now it just doesn't work.
When you go into settings/backup and restore/factory reset it's supposed to do something on it's own, mine just goes to recovery (ONLY IF STOCK RECOVERY IS INSTALLED OTHERWISE IT RECOVERY BOOTLOOPS) and the android guy falls over. It does not do the reset, I have to manually do it from stock recovery, but it doesn't seem to be helping.
Also, ##786# doesn't do anything. Neither does ##72786# as the Sprint rep was suggesting. My dialer (for one is lagging to all hell along with my keyboard) does not react, it just continues to show that #. This is on 100% stock too.

It sounds like you corrupted your efs but I cant say for sure because I haven't seen it happen too often. You can always try to flash pit through odin and repartition. I'll attach the pit file in a zip so you can try it.
It seems like I would be more likely to have luck on Android L because at least when I flash that I have a phone that somewhat functions, I am missing a modem, and can not get one to stick at all, but I can at least connect to wifi, log into gmail accounts and do anything else. Where as on a stock 4.4 refresh I have a sick lag, it shows I have a modem but I am not provisioned for data, and sprint support is no help. They want me to bring my phone to a tech which is not something I am looking to do knowing I tripped the KNOX flag.

I have never used the Nand Erase All or Phone EFS Clear options in Odin, but this seems like it might help?
2nd Edit: After flashing the PIT file with NE5 stock rom I achieved data. Now I have an incredibly laggy stock rom, which might just have to do for now, because I still can't get to a custom recovery.
I did not use Nand Erase All or Phone EFS Clear, but am still very interested.

I don't think you are haveing the same issues we are.
I had similar happen to me and the only thing that fixed it was to go back to the first stock, ND2 I think and work my way back up. It happened to me on NKD also, not sure if it was the same exact thing but sounds close. IIRC after flashing back to the first stock ROM thing started working but prior to that I Odin flashed every package that came with a pit file.

Downgrade on the sprint s5 is possible with Odin, no negative side effects. FWIW theres a few threads around too that back this statement.

[Q] no battery pull precludes recovery

I tried to use chainroot, and got stuck on the logo screen. normally you'd battery pull, go to recovery and wipe data. but i can't find any way to shut down the phone, before doing power-upVol-home.
And now i've tried to odin a stock recovery to undo chainroot, odin fails. could re-run odin with auto-reboot off, but again, no way to shut off and go to recovery.
at this point i'm stuck with the blue screen asking me to use smart switch on PC to do emergency recovery. but smartswitch says the device is not recognized.
thoughts? thanks!
I was stuck rooting on the boot logo too. Had to use odin 3.10 and did "run as administrator". Also if this helps to reboot the stuck phone press vol down+power together until the screen blanks out. If you need to get into download mode, as soon as the screen blanks out, press and hold the Home button ( Don't let go of the vol down and power though ).
Good grief.... the non-removable battery has made these recovery tricks so difficult
thanks twisted_mind. at this point, i only get the blue screen asking me to do smartswitch recovery, and the one thing i CAN seem to do is volDown-power-home and it easily goes to download mode. i have not been able to get to recovery mode no matter what i do (including volUp-power-home, even before this smartswitch message came up after i tried to odin a stock recovery).
so i can still go to dload mode, and stick in a stock rom. the ones i've tried are from sammobile, and a potential issue is that i don't know the exact one to pick (this phone is a demo here in europe and i didn't note the details under settings when it was working). so the ones i try end in an odin FAIL. again, i've also tried odin unchecking auto-reboot, but then the phone is stuck at the very end of dload ("don't turn off target", etc), and i have no way to battery pull, etc.
Instead of holding power to shut off you have to hold power and vol down

I have the turquoise screen that says "an error has occurred... use the emergency recovery function in smart switch...". if i do power + volDown there OR when the phone is stuck in download mode after the odin fail, the phone turns off but then comes right back on with the turquoise error screen. i've tried quickly going to the recovery key combo right when or right after the screen goes dark, but to no avail.
I can easily do power +volDown + home and go to dload mode. i just can't get into recovery mode no matter what i've tried so far.
if i could just find a stock rom that wouldn't fail in odin, or something else to use as AP/PDA in odin, i'd be set i think. wish i knew how to do this. hitting nand erase all in odin doesn't do the trick by the way.

so odin passed? (mine FAILs, with 4 different sammobile stock recoveries). I have the S6 Edge, maybe the S6 works fine and I just need the correct S6 Edge firmware.

umm, hey ammsamm, i went to the link you just mentioned, installed it and GOT SOME NASTY SPAMWARE INSTALLED on my machine from it. I'd normally flag you immediately as a bad user, but your other comments sound legit. do you have anything to say about this?

Samsung S6 Boot Loop

Hi,
Apologies if this has been asked before, but I've done a relatively thorough search and I can't find a solution to this problem.
I have an S6 (SM-G920F), It was playing up for a few weeks before this, not charging well, and what not, thought it was a cable/hardware issue. Then it stopped working entirely. Initially when it was plugged into the wall it would say it was 91% charged, but if you tried to turn it on it would turn off, and reboot into the charging screen.
I've done quite alot of reading and I've ended up flashing it with Odin (I have a single .md5 file, which i've loaded onto the phone via AP) using the most recent FIrmware UK EE for the SM-G20F. This was successful, however now it only loads the Black screen with white text Samsung S6 powered by android screen and then goes blank and back to the white text screen.
I downloaded an alternative firmware (the one previous version), but this has had the same effect. I've tried to repartition with odin, but this fails.
1.) Is there anyway I can fix this?
2.) If not Is there anyway to remove files whilst in downlod mode?
3.) If I cannot fix it or recover my data, is there anyway to wipe the data securely from my phone so I can sell it for parts?
At present, I can't access recovery mode, only download mode. But whilst Odin communicates with the phone in download mode, I can't seem to access my files from explorer?
1. I would say you'd have to clear cache, immediately after flashing the firmware with Odin, but to do that, you'd have to get to Recovery Mode first...
Why can't you get to it? Does it just start trying to boot nornally? Because if so, it's just a matter of timing it. What I do is... hold power+home+voldown to get to the screen that asks me if I want to get into Download Mode, I press cancel, and immediately start holding power+home+volup until I see the bootsplash screen, and release the power button but keep holding home+volup, and it gets me to Recovery every time, even when I have difficulties such as this.
2. Not that I'm aware of. BUT you could flash TWRP with Odin, and if you then can manage to get to Recovery, you just need to plug your phone into a computer, and your phone will show up in the computer as a device/disk and you can freely remove stuff from it.
If... IF this were to work, I would suggest downloading a stock-based ROM and flashing it. It's far more likely to work properly and bootup without issue than the firmwares you can get, and it's far less much of a headache to do.
3. Nope. There are apps that can wipe data securely (such as Shreddit which does it according to military standards), but it can't be done from Download Mode. There may be some script that could do it in Recovery Mode, but I doubt it.
I mean... technically... you could flash TWRP, go to Recovery, move to your PC all the stuff you want to keep, select the wipe option in TWRP and then transfer randomly generated data from your PC to your phone until it's full - there are many apps that can generate such data. It's not something you could pass off as very very secure, but it should suffice.
I seem to always keep going to trying TWRP - so, you know, give it a shot.

Thanks for your reply! So after flashing it goes straight back into the boot loop. Weirdly if its plugged into my laptop it spend about a second or two on the "Samsung Galaxy S6: Powered by Android" screen before plunging into darkness and shortly after repeating the same message. However if I plug it into the wall it spend over twice as long on that screen before repeating the cycle. It never goes any further.
I've tried your suggestion about perhaps its timing for recovery mode, but even if I go straight from cancelling download mode to trying the power, up and home key it doesn't go to recovery. I've tried a variety of timings both plugged into my laptop and plugged into the wall to no avail. If the phone isn't plugged in, it literally won't do anything whatsoever, won't even hint at turning on.
So Next I tried flashing it with TWRP via Odin and nothings changed, exactly the same bootloop and I still can't get into recovery mode.
I'm starting to think that sadly this phone my be beyond repair! Thanks for your help though, much appreciated.
Hi! I usually run out of my bootloops like this:
try this:
1: go to download mode, and press Power + home + volume —
2: As soon as the screen turns black, continue pressing Power and home, quickly release "volume —" and press "volume +". This will get you into recovery mode.
It always worked for me, so I wish the same for you. Good luck! (And sorry for my bad english)

Hi Vinicius,
Thanks for the suggestion. Unfortunately it didn't work, I even tried flashing it back to a standard ROM from TWRP, but it still didn't do anything, just back to the Samsung logo and the loop continues ever more!
Hi, I have this problem as well.
Originally I had TWRP and root flashed into my phone but for reasons I needed to remove root.
So I followed the Odin route stated here "Mobikin how to remove root from android" (I can't post links but this should be the top result when googling)
However I didn't know if the recovery/boot should have went into AP or BL on the Odin menu and googling didn't give me any answers so I may have tried both....
Right now I tried flashing TWRP and I can't seem to boot into TWRP as well.
I was able to get into recovery mode but clearing data/cache didn't fix it for me.
EDIT: I managed to flash in another stock rom and it boots into the SAMSUNG logo but gets stuck there. I already went into recovery mode to delete data and cache partition but it still doesn't boot.

Same experience. For all those 6 years that I used this device, the wifi was okay until now. It (wifi) is very buggy (turning on and off, and sometimes won't turn on at all) so I restarted the device, then bootloop happens. I flashed the stock rom via odin and clear data and cache. But it is still bootlooping. I think this is the sign that I need to replace my phone IF I couldn't find a fix to this.

How to fix bootloop (can't boot into recovery or system)?

My Galaxy S7 (SM-G930R4) has decided to not want to boot. I can't boot normally or into recovery. I can only boot into Odin mode.
I've tried to flash stock rom, but it doesn't seem to work. I've heard that I should use the ROM from samsmobile, so I'll try that next.
This all started to happen after I accidentally turned on the phone right before I took the battery out. I put that battery back in and it booted fine, but after a few minutes it rebooted and started to reboot over and over again. It won't even show the charging screen when it is turned off and plugged in.
OK, I tried to flash the stock rom with Odin, but it still is in a boot loop. I've flashed it 3 times. I've firmware files from different sites. It seems that this S7 is dead. Please help!
Try to flash another rom and keep in mind that it sometimes takes up to 10-15 minutes at the first boot.
You could also just flash TWRP...

TWRP for the Samsung Galaxy S7 (SM-G930R4)???
Also, now I've been greeted with the screen that says "An error has occurred while updating the device software." It says to use the Samsung Smart Switch PC software to fix it. Hopefully that works.
Where are you?
What firmware are you using? Branded or unbranded?
Have you looked on Sammobile for the correct firmware?
Are you able to boot into system recovery? Home+VOLUME UP+Power (Not Download)?
Oh you have got the G930R4. I thought G930F.
Then I don't know if there is a TWRP you could flash.
But if there is one you could just flash it and enter recovery mode and install a new ROM from within the TWRP environment.
Check this out.

Sounds like your device is currently bricked anyways, so just give it a try.
Maybe you can get a working TWRP recovery mode again.

I am in the US.
I'm on Android 8.0 (Oreo)
I have a US Cellular Branded phone.
As soon as the phone is turned on, it tries to boot into recovery, but it can't so it keeps on trying over and over again. I've tried the firmware from SamMobile, but nothing seems to work.
When I flash to Stock ROM, and I turn the phone on, it stays in a bootloop of the "Recovery Booting..." screen.
When I flash the rooted Engineering rom, and I turn the phone on, it stays in a bootloop of the Samsung S7 logo. I can't boot into safe mode.
I tried to use Samsung Kies... didn't work... I tried to use Samsung Smart Switch... didn't work... I've tried 3 or 4 different ROMs from different websites.... didn't work.
i have the same problem. was able to enter download mode several times, but at some point it died completely (not charging anymore). how do you manage to take the battery out? does the SM-G930R4 the possibility to easily remove it?

The glass panel on the back is glued onto the phone. If you remove the glass, there are screws and from there, it's easy. I broke the glass in the process... so yay me.
Mine won't charge either. It is completely dead, but it will still turn on when I plug it into my computer.
Really strange. Mine is not turning on, even tried several locations, charger, etc. Once I had download mode while having a black screen. Keep an eye on odin and instantly flash firmware if it got recognized. I press all three buttons while plugging in; that's how it worked the first time for me....
