Is it worth the jump from 5.0 to 6.0? - Sprint Galaxy S 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So i am running ok4 deodex rooted stock rom with xposed for touchwiz. And I haves been contemplating whether I should upgrade to the pca update to get marshmallow. What are everyone's experience so far with the new s5 update? Is it worth the jump, will i get improvements in phone usage or encounter more problems?
Sent from my SM-G900P using XDA-Developers mobile app

Yes. No doubt about it. Stock PE1 rooted here with xposed, firefds module (xtouchwiz version modded for s5) and the phone is running awesome with amazing battery life. I don't need any custom kernel and more tweaks. For me this MM rom is better than KK and LL.

I heard about an sd card issue that you cannot write to the sd card for some silly reason. Do you encounter such a problem?

No problem here. On some applications like "root explorer" if you use it to copy or write something to your external sdcard it will ask where is it, then you just select the external card and press apply. (this only happens on the first use)

Interesting I am tempted to Odin flash ok4 and take the update OTA later on today so I can be part of the marshmallow gang.
Hey @daniel3x how did you root your phone? I flashed twrp and flashed a supersu file to root mine like I always do but it got stuck in bootlop?

You must use SuperSU Beta
BTW are you on PCA version or the last one PE1? Make sure that you update to the latest version.

Improved speed and no more purple fringing, also semi transparent status bar? Seems like a pretty big update. 400mb or so and was just pushed to Deutsch international phones.
Sadly AT&T won't release any update until they see market benefit from it... Maybe next iPhone release day?

This is a patch, not an update. And AT&T has already released one patch for the S4 so why would you say they won't do it again?
Here's an English website that talks about the update.

is there any way of getting this update even if i did have a "modified device"?
i doubt bell would give it to me but would it be possible for someone on xda to port the update so that everyone in my position can use it or am i going to be forced into upgrading to a custom rom.
i realy friggin want that transparent status bar
On the I9505 Site there is a prerooted Odin flashable copy of the newest German version, odexed and soon a deodexed.
Maybe one of our developers will get this into a Zip flashable version.

I wouldn't do that.
If we do get this update anytime soon i would not flash it because it could have a patch for the boot loader hack.
**Move Apps to SD Card**
Thats enough reason for me to want some variant of this firmware update when and if its possible with a rooted and cwm recovery device such as mine... I hate not being able to move apps to the SD card when there is so little space. Ive thought of going with a custom rom but i use some of the TouchWiz stuff do I dont want to lose it.

Someone on another forum is reporting that you can only move APPS and not DATA, for example, GTA3 is only 15 megs for the app, but several gigs for data. Same goes with Google Music... songs saved is DATA and not APP.

If you are still on the Stock ROM you can do this:
1. Unfreeze AT&T updater (if you have it frozen)
2. Use ODIN to return to stock WITHOUT performing a factory reset. AdamOutler has a thread with the stock firmware download in the Android Development section
3. Boot up and check for updates
4. After you have updated, root it again
All your apps and settings will remain, and you may have to re-sign-in to some, but you should be good to go.
Wait till its released as a flashable zip then done.

When it is available do you flash with ODIN or via custom recovery (TWRP).
I am rooted with STOCK everything at the moment. Could I just remove root, update OTA and then re-root?

[How-To] Enable Native Tethering (I337 4.4.2 - Stock NI1, NB1, & NC1 ROM's Only)

The following files will enable tethering on your I337. Make certain that you use the version applicable to your current build and only use on stock ROM. Use on custom ROM's may cause issues with the ROM. Proceed at your own risk!
Note: This will modify your system causing future ota updates to fail!
Here they are:
I337UCUFNI1_Safestrap_TetherAddOn.zip
(To undo the mod flash the I337_NI1_TetherAddOn_Revert-to-Stock.zip using the same instructions below).
I337UCUFNC1_Safestrap_TetherAddOn.zip
I337UCUFNB1_Safestrap_TetherAddOn.zip
Instructions:
1. Root your device(See Post #2 for rooting options).
2. Install the latest Safestrap.apk.
3. Place the applicable Safestrap_TetherAddOn.zip on ext sdcard.
4. Reboot into Safestrap Recovery and flash the Safestrap_TetherAddOn.zip in Stock Slot (Do Not Wipe Prior to Flashing!)
5. Reboot. Done!
NI1, NC1 & NB1 Rooting Methods
NI1 Users: http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s4-att/general/how-to-root-i337ucufni1-t2881298
NC1 Users: Use Towelroot.apk
NB1 Users: Flash the NC1_Stock_Kernel in PDA Slot in Odin(AP in Odin v3.09+), then use Towelroot.apk to root your device. (Optional: flash the NB1_Stock_Kernel once rooted).
Alternatively, flash the I337UCUFNB1_4.4_Rootable_Stock_Odin_tar to get back to factory stock NB1 then use Towelroot.apk to root your device.

Most custom roms already offer tethering built in. Also they may already have a modified framework-res.apk(which these files replace) and may cause issues. So to answer your question I recommend only using this hack on stock.
I have an att i337 stock mf3, rooted using towel and su access. unlocked sim using tmo sim, which file should i download? also im on 4.2.2.. or if i update to atleast 4.3 with the newer modem will that fix this problem?

I'm surprised that you are one of the few that still has att i337 mf3 phone. if so, stay on it, root it and disable the update. else, you'll lost pretty much everything unless something else happen. however, the only thing i can recommend is that you follow another guide that can do it or use foxfi and the paid key.
Holy crap dude! Super cool! If only I didn't have a faulty motherboard everything would be almost perfect, only thing I I'm missing is wifi calling but whatever. I'm gonna have to live without it cause the tmobile roms just don't work for me. Thanks so much man! Hey you think tmobile detects this? I have 3gb free a month.

Correct. Installing safestrap will not wipe anything.
Awesome, installed without issues.
The connection does appear to be quite a bit slower than using the previous theringprovision.apk with 4.2.2.
Would flashing a different modem help this?

Can you try this version and see if the speed is better? I believe that I made a mistake on the first one: https://www.androidfilehost.com/?fid=23622183712475370

Nope just flash over previous version.
Flashing it now, I'll get you an update in the morning.
Edit: Seems quite a bit faster after flashing the new file.
I wish I had done a speed test first but the results below are from my second install
36.64Mb down 12.95 up.
Once I rebooted I got the message "Safestrap disabled"
is that ok? I noticed the security policy in the 4.4.2 update with Samsung seems to like the ban hammer with alot of rooted stuff.

I don't know what kind of LTE speeds you normally get in your location but those speeds that you posted are more than decent. And I wouldn't worry about the safestrap disabled message, that's normal. I definitely made a mistake when compiling the first version of the tether add on but this latest version is definitely correct enjoy.

mine keeps hanging up at 25 to 27% its only rooted ive tried to remove root and re update still same thing did you have to do anything to get the update?
i have the same tablet, but i do not see the update. Do i need to unroot the tablet to get the update?
I was rooted and had quite a few /system mods such as the LG G3 keyboard and at one point Wanam Xposed. Once I un rooted the update installed 100% but gave me an error on boot.
I downloaded the stock 4.2.2 tar file and flashed via Odin. This did not wipe /data and left me with a stock 4.2.2 un rooted device.
At this point the update installed perfectly.
Is the update speedier than the 422 stock?

LRA ☆SM-G920R6☆ Root without tripping Knox Counter

Hi. I'm finally can root my SM-G920R6. I use the KingRoot.apk the v4.80 and root the phone. But it's not full root. Them I use the SuperSuMe.exe on my PC to remove all the KingRoot app and install the official SuperSu.apk The program install it's self. And now we can install the correct binary and reboot the device and don't lose root... ohh and my Knox still 0x0... =) XD:laugh: :victory: :highfive:
Links:
●KingRoot v4.80
●SuperSuMe. for PC
Sincerely I don't know if full root or not. But for me is working. And other things I don't know is full knox disabled. The SuperSuMe block the knox in one of the process but I don't know if is disabled at all or not.
I wish this can't help all the SM-G920R6 user. And don't want to avoid the knox warranty.
The only thing you can see is every time you BootUp your phone it say Custom.
The next thing I'm going to do is make a full backup with FlashFire app because mi firmware not appear in SamMoblie. If one Dev can make something with this backup for make custom roms or something good for this devices model.
my phone info:
Android Version : 5.0.2

Build Number : LRX22G.G920R6WWU1AOE4
Hardware Version : G920R6.02

This is a little off topic for the op but I really need help right now.. I rooted with CF autoroot for G920F no problem then installed TWRP 3.0.2-1 zeroflteusc also built for G920F model and in the process of trying to find a better rom as soon as I had a custom recovery, me (being a dumba**) accidentally wiped my internal storage to do a clean flash of a rom therefore deleting the only backup I had. It was also stuck on Android 5.0.2 but I found a compatible rom with AllianceROM v1 with update v2 flashed for the G920F but I can't find any way to update past 5.0.2!! I've been trying to find a way to update somehow for weeks but nothing is compatible with my device and I'm stuck. Would someone that has my model running on Android 5.1.1 or 6.0/.1 please install the TWRP I mentioned before and make a backup of the system, modem, efs, and boot and post it online or send it to me it would be a lot of help.

Because my device is G920R6 originally and i want it back the 920F rom is barely compatible with my device as is and i want a stable rom made for my build and also to enlighten others of how i rooted this phone and what custom recovery is working for me. Even on 5.0.2 and an unstable rom my battery lasts 6+ hours of constant use so root is working fine for me.
So much hate.

950U stock rom 7.0 with flashable root... SafeStrap needed

First off Safestrap is need for this to work...:good:
This is a complete stock system .IMG I pulled from BQL1 /BRB1 just to keep the same as rest of the roms out there.....Fully bloated nothing removed...100% Stock
The stock images here will now work for SafeStraped Revision 5 or 6 bootloaders in order to obtain nougat rooted
No mods/No crazy fancy foot work....This is a do it your self stock rooted rom setup for all who wants it....
And no this uses the same kernel as other roms, Battery charges to 80% like any other for Snapdragon S8
Manual fix for 80% charge
https://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s8/how-to/wip-manual-charge-past-80-snap-dragon-t3918553
This is the last nougat firmware available before We went to nougat...
Super stock 7.0 No bags/No wallplugs
Without further ado
I have updated with BRB1 as well at bottom of this post.
Download the stock system .IMG from here https://drive.google.com/file/d/1kPJaF4AMNyMr-3RLfycKuX3ZOxPQeWz1/view?usp=sharing BQL1 here
We need busy box from here...... https://drive.google.com/open?id=1k1zOTMAAuqL1KydoHj_QpOwmOQQqSTXT I used this one as i know it works if you want to update go ahead.
We need system mode SU Not system-less from here..... https://forum.xda-developers.com/apps/supersu/v2-64-2-66-supersu-mode-t3286120
Ok Now we got all that. Place the system .img on internal SD card and extract there.....Then goto TWRP in SafeStrap......
We want to wipe system cache and dalvik....Like always...:good::good::good:
Then after that flash that sys.img to system..
We need to then flash Su and Busy box....For good measure factory reset after all said and done...
Before reboot Reboot to download mode....
In download mode then flash your respective CSC file in Normal odin I use 3.13
If you do not do this you will have a bunch of metro pcs cricket and tmobile crap as well as double and triple menus,So you are warned
Once all this is done reboot system as normal sign in and do your thing enjoy a 100% stock rooted rom.....
No xposed no nothing Be aware xposed will break Bluetooth pairing on reboots...
Also on a side note.If you are on bootloader revision 3 or 4 you cannot downgrade to root nor is root available for these revisions
Revision 5 or 6 bootloaders see here for safestrap, https://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s8/development/root-t3904613
Then you can follow this starting with system img... DO NOT ATTEMPT TO FLASH REV 4 OR LOWER BOOTLOADERS ON REVISION 5
Make sure to give our man @jrkruse the proper credits he deserves for Bringing this to revision 5 bootloaders..
Instructs for rev 5 or 6
https://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=79004426&postcount=29
Again you must already Safe-strap installed...
Credits
As always Thank @partcyborg for root and wonderful rom for our S8.
@mauam for the version of SU downloads
As well as @Chainfire for all of his hard work and SU
@YashdSaraf for his version of busy box
@TheMadScientist For all this crap here lol:good::good::good:
If I am missing any one just hollar at me:good:
Disclaimer This is a build your own system from scratch So any issues you may have can be possibly helped here but in the end it is your own accord of flashing and modding Dont cry to me when you break something
Im a mechanic Not a rom developer I just know there are several out there that dont like the other roms available for our S8 locked bootloader. So just another option:good::good::good:
This is Jrkruzes safestrap method and zips in this post very helpful
https://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=79004426&postcount=29
And BRB1 latest 7.0 here https://drive.google.com/open?id=1h6e-3qCkE4JhiAlGjk94jpCz2CVMir8Z
And here is the BRB1 baseband CP for odin https://drive.google.com/open?id=1BuUc-R6jU7ha4nn4vkPrLfvfz2axi5Ru
Flashing this is similar to flashing the first one.But if you are on my stock rooted now you can dirty flash this system followed by su then busybox and then open odin and reflash CSC or a no signal situation will present itself.
Other than that I did dirty flash all of my apps and most of my settings were left untouched...
Thanks i'll try later this week

I would assume its the same method as this i will download the firmeware to day and extract it all and post it up:good::good::good:
remember we can only go as far as u2 is.... and no oreo as we do not have a permissive kernel..
On a side note some reason I cant download firms from sam mobile so Im using some off site no name site But will upload em to my drive for your pleasure of downloading
And on a second side note you should be able to more or less dirty flash this one But I would reflash SU and busy box just incase as well as any other system based mods you do Cause as again this will be 100% stock so any debloation you have done will be undone again This note is for any one already running the stock rooted system not coming from other roms

Thank you so much! I greatly appreciate it. I will update to the stock (BRB1) IMG when I'm off work later and update from PartCyborgs (BQL1) which I've been using as my daily driver for months on end lol. Anyways, thank you again, it is much appreciated by me and the community!!

By the way @TheMadScientist, you should make a correction to your OP about your build number versions. One of them is wrong. Specifically when you say the build number BLQ1 twice in the OP. It should be BQL1 instead of BLQ1 so people don't get confused. I know it's a minor typo but I thought I'd point it out. Or maybe you noticed but didn't care to fix it, who knows lol. Also, quick question, is there anyway I could go about deodexing these ROMS of yours? Or should I message PartCyborg how to go about it?

I can't remember what he used to to it. I would msg him. I'll fix typos later lol. I didn't even notice
So now after several weeks. I can most def say cyborgs rom has much better battery life. Than stock. I still make it through the day but at the end I'm finding myself with 25 to 35% now instead of 35 to 55
I have slightly underclocked. And a few build prop tweaks from back in the day. But seems pretty rock solid....
I'm in oreo g950u.
My bootloader version 3.
is that work? Can you give tutorial in video?
I'm from indonesia.sorry for my bad english

This will not work with BL 3. You cannot downgrade either. There is no way for you to root with ANY ROM on the regular S8 above BL 3 as of right now.
Sent from my SM-G950U using XDA Labs
Thanks for the step by step.. I'm hoping to do this with the g950u1 firmware. I am guessing since you said you must start with rooted firm, if I use magisk and get systemless root the add safe strap then proceed to your steps that should put me in the right direction.. then I could make a full system backup to make a flushable stock pre rooted firmware I could store in case of a rainy day.. does this sound logical or am I a bit mistaken?. I'd like to create a true 4 file firmware from a system backup after I make any adjustments or add any apks so that if I ever need to reinstall.. everything will flash without having to readjust settings or use data to download any of the apps/flushable .zip files as well as avoid the need for re writing the build.prop and such. I'm open for any suggestions if you have any. Thanks again!
In first part there is no CP just sys.img SU & BusyBox
So I assume no need of CP there
And in BRB1 there is CP file do we have to flash that thru regular Odin or we can skip that.
Thanks

You can flash that to update your baseband to the latest rootable with Odin. Just so you can have all the latest updates possible
The CP is totally optional though
