Hello guys! I wasn't really sure if I should ask you about that but I think I really need help on that. I am an Android geek (but I am only beginning to learn app development so my professional knowledge may not be good enough). I talked about this issue with several people: some say it's not an issue and I shouldn't have brought it up, others say it's a problem. Someone from Samsung contacted me a told me that this issue shouldn't exist and that it has been caused by some app I installed (and this app has some administrator permissions).
I have no idea.
Anyway, this "issue" is that when my S7 is locked I can still unfold the quick notifications menu (by swiping from the top to the bottom of the screen) and turn off/on the Internet. Should I be able to do that? What if someone steals my phone?
I described the whole thing in more detail here: https://mobileguru.lol/security-flaw-in-samsung-galaxy-s7/
I guess there are many (or only ) highly tech people who may finally give me a satisfactory answer.
Thanks in advance!
Olga
My S7 does the same.
It seems your concern is that mobile data can be turned on without unlocking. The examples you give on the linked site didn't convince me of a serious security issue though:
1) A thief can turn off mobile data in order not to be tracked. True, but he can achieve the same effect by turning the phone off anyway.
2) Google Now gives traffic info after turning on mobile data. This indicates you're showing notifications on the lock screen. You can turn this off. I did.
It's a surprising finding however, at least for me. I never tried to sweep down on the lock screen before. Thanks for sharing.
I think a patch is required.same happens to me.
it reminds me of some iphone issues like this before.
even flightmode can be enabled disabled

Yes you have right but it creates some inconvenience if you want to unlock and then apply a shortcut very quick
I think we just look for thinks that are not important.

Samsung with the knox stuff about security blablabla .
It is maybe not important for us normal users but maybe someone finds it like a loophole(dont get me wrong i am a knox hater myself lol.)
if samsung cares about security should fix it.
i am sure that no app created this issue like samsung guy said. I reenabled all my package disabler pro disabled apps and it happens again.
Thanks for answers! Well,I thought about moving the shortcut into a different place but it doesn't help - I can still access all of the shortcuts. The funniest thing is that I cannot turn off/on location with the locked phone but I can turn on/off mobile data.
I know that a thief can simply turn the phone off (or its battery may day) and it will be impossible to localize it but the possibility of turning on/off mobile data decreases the chances of finding a stolen/lost phone. Of course if a professional thief steals a phone, we probably won't have it back but if an amateur does it, we may have a little more chance of finding it. That's my whole point here.
But if the phone is turned on in the emergency mode and it's locked this quick settings menu cannot be brought down!
Look into installing Cerberus
there are options to block the power button (so a thief cannot turn the phone off) and to block the notification pull down(so a thief cannot access the quick options from the lockscreen)
Also if a thief pops out your sim and installs a different sim - you can set to get text alerts with the new info from that sim(phone, sim card #)

this is 100% a flaw, I have said this before about the pull down and was told that, thats just how it is.
mostly everything when u click it will ask for a password but not the data lol that is just to funny

Even if there was an option to disable the pull down on the lock screen, I was sure there was an option in the past. Can't remember when/where I seen it, as I know it's always been an option in cyanogen mod.

the flaw is not that you can pull down the flaw is you can enable and disable the data.
wifi it will ask for a password
anything else will ask for a password
so like said before if some one was to steal your phone they could swipe down on the lock screen and then disable the data
any toggle on the lock screen should always ask for password

Well the flaw is that you can actually turn the phone off when the screen is locked.
I agree with the OP. This was just not thought out real well. There is no way you should be able to do anything with a locked phone, not even turn it off. There are plenty of issues and it will only get worse with Nougat. I hope they never push it onto our S7....
And it gets better with the latest update where they give you Samsung Cloud whether you ask for it or not and back up all your apps (including your passwords!) whether you ask for it or not. Snowden's worst nightmare...

Dude, even good lock isn't fixing this problem. I tried and tried even that microsoft lockscreen but none of them are working the right way.
I made a reddit post bout this and some users can only change the Sound/Flash and rotate toggle and get asked for a unlock of the screenlock when changing any connection setting but on mine S7 with the september security patch doesn't do that. It asks for a unlock when i want to toggle wifi or bluetooth etc but not for airplane mode and mobile data so this is a security problem indeed.
But maybe you can tell me which firmware you are running? im on a 930F and tried the latest german and dutch firmware and now i have the G930FXXU1BPHJ software but still not fixing it.

And how do you do that? Because then you press the arrow looking icon it will show all your toggles so even then you can disable mobile data.
Just been thinking, isn't it pointless even if you get this fixed so mobile data can not be disabled?
All they need to do is remove the SIM card and mobile data is disabled anyway

I can't enable anything besides volume and rotation lock with good lock installed, adjusting airplane mode, bluetooth and data/wifi takes me straight to a passcode lock.
I'm running on G930FXXU1BPHE, but even on previous builds with goodlock, and on my s6, I can do everything besides turn off any communication toggles..
- besides that turning the device off doesn't bother me, because all manufacturers put force reboot on their products.

People are so cautious when it comes to this.
I never understood why, if you can turn off your phone at the lockscreen, you're screwed.
I personally use remote commands and message on simchange, i'ved used roms that stop the device being turned off and instead email a photo as well as a latt long location.
All in all it just gives you a slim chance of hope to get your device back.
I'm pretty careless with my phone, and it has been lost and stolen numberous amounts of times, just an example, is at the gym out of my bag.
Now, i maybe ranting on because of my 4th cup of coffee, but Having someones face provides some great hope - with that said, it only takes 2 seconds for someone with a little common sense of phones to completely wipe your device in minutes without a trace.
But.. the chances of coming past someone with that knowledge is sadly... surprisingly rare.

Thanks for the reply dude! May i ask if you on reddit also? Because i posted this problem also and got some response back from a few people.
And some have this problem while others dont so i where asking which firmware they had and someone, who said they didn't have this problem linked me to the same one that you are having.
So guess that the optus firmware doesn't have this problem while my dutch firmware still have this problem while beeing on a newer firmware so thats what i find weird.
So optus with PDA G930FXXU1BPHG CSC G930FOPS1BPHE seems to be secured the right way and my dutch with PDA G930FXXU1BPHJ CSC G930FPHN1BPH3 has it not.
You think this could be related to the CSC? or just the firmware?

Unlock With WiFi has been reborn as SkipLock!
Unlock With WiFi is now available on the Android Market! Thanks for your feedback everyone!
Get it on the Android Market
What does the app do?
Unlock with WiFi unlocks your device when you're connected to your home WiFi network. What does "unlock" mean? It means you don't have to enter your password/pattern/PIN when you turn on your phone. When you're at home, or work, you don't need to worry about losing your phone, so why should you have to enter your password?
How does it work?
When you get home (or to work, whatever), and connect to your WiFi network, your device will unlock. Then when you leave, and the WiFi disconnects, the device will lock again.
You have to enter your password the first time after you connect to your WiFi network. This is so that if someone steals or finds your phone, they can't just bring it to your house to unlock it. After you enter your password once while connected to your WiFi network, you won't have to enter it again until you leave/disconnect.
What else does it do?
You can also set a lock delay, for when you're not at home. The default delay is set to 5 seconds, so when you turn the screen off, the device won't lock until 5 seconds have passed. That way, if you remember something you forgot to do, you can turn it back on without entering your password.
There are also options to:
Turn off WiFi when you leave home
Turn on Bluetooth when you leave home
Turn off Bluetooth when you get home
Turn on Sync when you get home
Turn off Sync when you leave home
If you have any problems with the app, please post on this thread, or PM me. Also, the app has a built in feature for reporting bugs. It will send me the system log file via email. You need to install SendLog in order for this to work, but please do so because the log file is extremely helpful to me for troubleshooting.
Please read the FAQ before posting a question or reporting a problem.
I hope you like the app, and look forward to hearing your feedback!
Known limitations:
See the FAQ for known limitations.
Versions:
There are two versions: free and full. The free version only allows you to configure one wifi network as a home network, and the extra options are disabled. Note that the free version no longer shows ads! If you like it, please buy the full version. The full version allows an unlimited number of home networks, and all the options are enabled. You can get the full version on the Android Market.
Changelog
I will no longer be maintaining the changelog here. See my website for release notes.
Cheers,
Ben

Nice idea, probably good app, but I can achieve all this and much much more with Tasker. Much more complex, indeed, and that is probably where your app comes into play - simple and easy.
But still, i prefer Tasker
Good Idea!

Fantastic idea! If you add in the functionality found in the Y5 - Battery Saver App, it could be an all in one app:
You get home
Recognizes Cell towers
Turns on WiFi
Connects to Network
Unlocks Phone
You leave home
Leaves area of Recognized Cell towers
Turns off WiFi
Locks Phone
good concept. it does what it says...prevents your phone from locking.
but on my phone (Incredible, CM7), it's kind of annoying because you can still press the volume buttons or trackball (if setup) to wake the phone. what sucks about that is you can inadvertently turn your ringer off, or wake the screen if your fumbling around with your phone your pocket or something.
again, app works as it said it would, and does it great. just not what im looking for.
i want to just disable the passcode, not the screen lock feature.
Downloaded and testing it
i have CM7 and it works fine ... (i can disable track ball wake ) but doesn't leaving the wifi on when your home increase battery drain ? food for thought
you could also add this : ask the user to specify a place as home with gps then lock/unlock according to that . it won't be as accurate as wifi tho
Works on Droid X
This app seems to work great. Thanks so much - this is perfect for me in healthcare with security issues related to HIPAA. I hate the idea of constantly typing in my password when I know that I have my phone with me at work or at home. Great app
I second the idea to have wifi automatically turn on when I get home or work.
Great idea. I'll try it after work this afternoon.
Just installed it on a DHD. Seems to be working so far. Thanks!
Update: Not working. my phone still locks. My phone is locked by the company exchange account password.
Hey you improved my idea...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=982872
your application is very similar to mine (VERY), but some things improved I recognize it... anyhow if somebody wants to be sure of what is running inside I'm providing also the source code licensed as GPL3
I hope you don't copy-pasted portions of it or you should be licensing as GPL3 also...
Just found this - I've downloaded and I'll test tonight when I get on my wifi. I have a password lock enforced via Exchange certificate from my place of work. It'd be great if it would work with that also...
Desire, Froyo.
A question about GPS enabling. I'm a Tasker user; I've installed a GingerBread (2.3.3) ROM in my HTC Magic and now Tasker shows me a message explaining that's not possible to enable/disable GPS without user interaction in GingerBread due to Google changes in Android code. So, will be possible to make such actions with this app?
Thanks!
Will test-drive this today. Thanks!
Hey guys,
I've been following XDA-developers for a long time, and would like to return something for all the help the community has provided. I traded my iPhone 4 for a G2X today only to find out that my BB data plan is incompatible -_-. Unwilling to wait until Memorial Day was over (611 closed), I decided to turn on Wi-Fi and tinker with it.
Unfortunately I fell victim to the phone's Wi-Fi's problems. It worked for seconds at startup, then simply stopped. Frustrated, I decided to take manners in my own hands. The evil culprit is T-Mobile's My Account program. Here is how to fix it (root and a $3.99 Market purchase required, no piracy!!)
First follow the directions in this tutorial to root your phone. Its pretty simple. ADVANCED: unrooting method.
Make sure Wi-Fi calling is turned on, as well as 3G/4G (from Mobile networks settings page)
Do a battery pull AFTER you enable the above ^. Wait 1 minute before rebooting your phone.
Wi-Fi should work on its own (although buggy) with these two enabled. If you have 3G/4G, you do not need to do this: for Wi-Fi only users, continue to reboot until you have somewhat of a stable Wi-Fi connection. It's very intermittent but eventually it will work for enough time to download Root Explorer from the market!
Go to the Market and install Root Explorer (purchase required, there may be free ways but I do not know of them and I do not advocate piracy)
Open this app. A popup from Superuser will ask you for permission. Grant it with "Allow"
From Root Explorer, navigate to /system/apps
At the top of the list box click the "Mount R/W" button
Scroll down and look for the following: MyAccount.apk and com.nuance.nmc.sihome (the latter may be named differently but it has a My Account icon)
A box will come up telling you that com.nuance.nmc.sihome has encountered an error. This box will refuse to go away. Simply do a battery pull.
YOUR WI-FI WOES SHOULD BE GONE, and your phone's stability should have improved. Enjoy!
You can download the latest version of My Account from Market now and cease to have problems.

You don't need to do any of this noob stuff if your wifi doesn't connect to your home router or any router for that matter. It's unneccesary and time consuming, not to mention risky since you could "brick" your phone. All you have to do is reboot the phone, simplest way is hold power button and volume up simultaneously, then it should connect, assuming you entered the correct password if router has secure connection.
I just turn wifi off then back on. Works for me.
And stop with the noob stuff the guy just wrote he came from an iPhone to a g2x.
He will figure it out as he goes.

I see two band-aid solutions, a reboot, and a restart...gosh that is advanced.
Verse a solution to fully resolve the problem, and keep it gone. More importantly a possible isolation of the cause.
These super duper pro android interlopers are unapproachable on their savvy solutions. Ummm no
Since the OP says its linked to My account program, and I know on first run it says a newer copy is available, I am going to wonder that many users don't touch it.
So since I am already freshly on a complete reset of everything (erase all date, or hold down volume and power) I am going to try.
1. Full erase reset
2. First thing upadate new version of My Account.
3 Hard restart.
4. See how it reacts
My wifi is decent except sometimes it does clog up and I have to clear buffers and shut down programs to get it to kick up. Start and stop wifi solves nothing on mine.
Anyways its about 10 minutes of time to do, since my phone already is in near out of the box setup.
Sorry but I'm not here to post "noob" stuff. Of course restarting the phone or its wifi radio were part of my first efforts. But the phone's stock software has a bug in which the default My Account program a) causes a DNS issue and b) displays itself twice in Manage Applications. Things work great if you have a working data connection from tmo but if not you will notice that wifi refuses to work on its own. I'm not dumb and by no means am I a noob. I've been following XDA since the days of the Wizard. By the way rooting and deleting useless carrier garbage like the buggy and persistent MyAccount.apk will not brick your phone unless you are careless.
"My Account" from tmo has been nothing but a pain in the ass for me. I froze it using Antek App Manager (a free app). I used the same software to freeze the other garbage that came installed by tmo, and battery and booting issues have greatly improved. Just my 2 cents.
Other stuff I froze include: Car Home, ea games, Zinio reader, AppPack, T-Mobile TV, and wifi calling.
Of course some are big fans of wifi calling but I don't need or use it.

Okay sorry, it causes the HSPA / Wi-Fi switching issue. Could you be any more polite about correcting me? FYI I haven't found any SOLID proof of this. Immediately after removing MyAccount and all of its derivatives from the phone DNS requests worked flawlessly; It's been 9 hours of constant wi-fi only use without issues (NO radio turned on). Prior to removing the app, only IP addresses would be resolved by the browser.

Is there any way to disable the warning message when toggling the standalone GPS service?
I am trying to set up Lookout and AndroidLost so that it can remotely locate my phone in case it's lost or stolen. But each time I send a signal for GPS to turn on, the warning message pops up first and the "Agree" button must be clicked to enable GPS. Makes the locating your lost phone via GPS kinda pointless if you have to be present to enable the GPS ...
The warning message doesn't seem to be coming from any of the apps. Seems to be the Android OS that's showing the warning. I get the same warning if I go to Settings > Location & Security and check the Standalone GPS services option.
Does anyone know how to disable this?
Thanks.
I agree, this is pretty stupid. None of my other phones did this. Must be a verizon thing.
anyone have a fix for this?
I agree also, i use my phone to go geocaching, and i am allways turning on and off my GPS. And i am getting tired of that stupid warning.

It must be possible. I was running either AB or gummy and I remember not having the warning. I'm running humble 1.4 now and it's back.

I doubt it's a Verizon thing since neither my Droid nor my Fascinate did that. Maybe Samsung is trying something new with the Charge?

I know that since the whole location aware controversy with the Android and iPhones, they've started to put that warning in. However, I agree, it's annoying so hopefully someone can help us out
I try to tweak the phone to save as much battery as it can, but I still want to be able to use the Lost Phone functionality. What settings do you suggest?
For now I'm using these settings:
- Allow WIFI to sleep when in sleepmode
- Allow WIFI to scan even if WIFI is turned off
- No GPS
- Location is on battery save mode
- Don't allow mobile data connection when screen is of (using Llama)
Now im using the default Google find my phone website. For the theftie I installed Lockwatch (it will take a pic after a few tries of entering the wrong code). But you need a data connection / wifi for the app to sent the mail? So how to circumvent this if wifi and data is off after the phone goes to sleep??
I don't have Lockwatch. But it looks like a really nice simple app. From what I can read in the product description it implies that Lockwatch turns on the required features by itself GPS, WiFi, etc. Have you tried "stealing" your own phone with your power saving settings activated? The other thing not mentioned in the product description is does the app continue to send periodic emails to update the phones location after it has been stolen and is moving? Maybe you know? I am using Lookout which can be interrogated at any time to located the phone. But it is not a lightweight app, which makes Lockwatch all the more interesting. Thanks for bringing it to my attention. I can't answer your question, but maybe someone else can, plus my question!
I monitored the battery life of my Moto G LTE for a while and I can say that in standby doesn't drain battery, even if gps and mobile networks are active (I tried using Runtastic while riding racing bike for about 15km: 1h of gps and mobile network consumed about 10-15%).
Remember that, even if you turn on location, doesn't mean that phone searches costantly gps signal, it searches for it only when apps request for it.

You're welcome. I try to test it a few times. I'm still not sure when the mailing and gps kicks in. I do receive a mail when fake stealing my phone So it works good from time to time.
There is an premium feature that will try to sent again when there is data connection again.
If you want even more lightweight, im now using Avira with Lockwatch. If you like your phone to take pics for app locking, you can try Smart App Lock. And if you dislike Chrome, use CM Browser

The "time to time" bit sounds worrisome! I'm on this group because I gave my wife a Moto G. She just wants a working phone, so now that it's pretty much setup right and she can "drive" it proficiently I tend not to mess with it (read - I am not allowed!) . We live in Peru 6 months a year and we both like the fact that I can ping her phone using Lookout if necessary to see that's she's safe. However, they removed the photo taking feature from the free version, and the paid version is now about $30 p/a. Quite reasonable, but this has prompted me to see what else is out there before giving them my money. I have read good things about Avira ($10 for Pro version), so your recommendation might be perfect. I have also just looked at avast! Anti-Theft (pro version $15 p/a), this also seems very comprehensive, I am not too worried about antivirus protection as she only uses the basic's. Anyway I'm still looking around to look at all possible options. Thanks!
Oh, and sorry I don't mean to pull your thread off track. But you do want a location app that overrides your battery saving setup when needed. So the more possible options open to you the better right? On our Moto G, the WiFi/3g data is always on. We get a 2 to 3 day typical battery life.

It's ok, maybe some good anti-theft app can do this overriding the battery saving setup thingy. Im now trying "Android Lost", "AntiTheft & Find My Phone" and "Theftie" (all free of course) . Since we are just both users, maybe we can help each other here on XDA.
Sure, I for one would like to know which app you consider to be the best. Also the reasoning behind the decision.
I hope that you you find one that can override your power saving settings. I would hope that they all can...

After a few tests, i think Theftie and Lockwatch are the best. But I still need wifi or a data connection. And as a backup i keep Android Lost. So in the end i cannot save battery if i want to use the anti-theft functionalities.
Let me know if you what you decided.

Have you tried cerberus? It's one of the most complete out there at a reasonable price
I have to say Cerberus is very complete, I think this is the first app I have seen that specifies in its description that GPS is turned on even if its turned off. Edit:- not quite, only on systems earlier than 2.3.3 on later version you have to jump through hoops and convert Cerebus to a system app. Then In the case @justanicename the phone still needs to get access to a WiFi of GSM internet connection. I presume the only chance is that if the phone is stolen the thief will try to use the phone and the GSM data connection will become active when the screen comes on?
I did some further research on the battery saving settings and found a discussion sayin that actually turning on/of the wifi/dataconnection/gps is draining the battery more. So I will try this for a while. Cerberus looks really nice, it seems that Theftie does a lot of what cerberus does too.
Hi, I tried Cerberus yesterday. It does everything as advertised. The memory footprint is 4.4mb, compared with Lookout's 19mb, though Lookout does provide antivirus protection. I started to try Theftie today, but was putoff by the requirement to sign in using Google+ a service that I don't like and don't use. So I removed Theftie. I will go with Cerberus costing the one time 3 Euro. Thanks @agusaon for the pointer.

Great app! I hope you enjoy it and never have to use it
Hi,
I inadvertently ended up with an extra S6 (long, frustrating story...) that didn't get returned. It's been quite a few months now, and it hasn't appeared on my bill or received any letters about it.
I'm hesitant to send it back at this point because that might result in it getting added to my bill, and will no doubt result in a lot more frustration...plus the one I'm being billed for has screen problems that Samsung won't cover. I'd at least like to use it for VR viewing with just WIFI.
I haven't opened or turned it on yet however because I'm concerned that would cause it to try to activate and register on their network, and hence trigger billing in their system.
I see a lot of flash services being offered, but that obviously requires turning it on first. What steps can I take to prevent it from trying to activate and register, so I can at least use it for WIFI?
Thanks very much for your help!
Take out the sim and do not connect to wifi. Then root it. You will need to root to disable the automatic activation apps. When done the phone will not activate and you will be able to use vr with wifi and have 0 issues. PM me for the steps

Thanks for the reply, and sorry for the delay.. I'm new here and expected a notification for replies, so didn't see it till now.
I'll remove the sim card and won't connect it to WiFi like suggested. I'm not entirely sure how to root it however given that it's a U.S. based model and I've been reading that's more of a factor than with international models. But that's probably the case only if you're wanting to use it as a phone and not just a WiFi device.
I'll PM you for the steps. Thanks again!
