oh,
before unlocking:
did you check in Settings, Developper options : OEM unlocking ?
If you haven't Developper options in Settings, go to :
Setting/About/Software information / More/
Then tap Build number (10 times) until a message appears telling you that it's ok for Developper options.

I install the rom NXT-L29C432B320 and now the phone work well. OK
But the build number of my phone is NXT-C900B320 instead of NXT-C432B320.
I try to use the srk tools Build name : Lod-Chong (Thai Food) 2.0 - 20161002. found https://forum.xda-developers.com/mate-8/general/how-to-install-nxt-l29c432b560-official-t3540042
I tried to use the menu 7 and after 9 to change the region of my phone but this does not work.
My question is how I can change the region of my phone to have NXT-C432B320?
May be after that i will able to install the NXT-L29C432B560?

Well you need to be root in order to change ro.build.display.id & oeminfo. Once you have rooted it. Change ro.build.display.id to NextL09C999B100 and change oeminfo to C432. Reboot your phone.

Were you on MM or nougat before this? And accordingly use the correct twrp. The ine you used may be not be the correct one.once the correct twrp installed, you may flash without error 7.
Whats the phone model btw?

Try to reinstall everything using a rollback (that will lock, not relock, the bootloader) and you'll be able to flash updates again

Thanks for the directions, links, and video. All went well (i kept the moto x4 on 8.1 instead of upgrading to Pie) - the only difference was I had to enter my password to decrypt the drive first, then remover Superuser (to let the magisk built in superuser run).
Just two questions. Do you know:
1. if I should turn off the "oem unlocking" for the bootloader after everything is installed?
2. if I should turn off usb debugging after everything is installed?

once you unlock bootloader that option should be greyed out.
no point in disabling it
usb debugging is your wish. thats for taking logs.

My "OEM unlocking" slider is still active - I can slide it off and back on, although I don't know if that actually does anything.

Oh yeah, I forgot about that. I haven't rooted a phone since 2010. So jhedfors mentions flashing back to stock to update via OTA but I'd flashing back to stock the only way to get it or can I get the update from Motorola's website and install that way?
Just went back to stock, and I wanted to make sure I usnderstand you all on OTA updates: do we really have to flash back to stock using the full firmware (as in the guide here: https://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-x4/how-to/guide-how-to-flash-official-factory-t3808348 ) before OTA? That seems like a lot of work. Is there a way to just temporarily disable Magisk, take the OTA, then re-install Magisk?
Your device does not qualify for bootloader unlocking.
i have amazon prime version
Is there anything I can do?

[TA-1021] How to Install/Boot TWRP 3.2.3-0 (modded) for Pie and Root it

/!\DO IT ON YOUR OWN RISK/!\
Recently, Nokia made us happy by fulfilling their promise to update our Nokia 6 to Android Pie. It's very exciting until you find out there is no way to root or even use TWRP on this device when Pie is installed.
Worry not, I've found a way to install TWRP and root our Nokia 6 using Magisk. Follow the guides below!
/!\ WARNING! This process requires you to unlock your Nokia 6 bootloader first. Bootloader unlock isn't officially available nor supported yet, so it is paid and MOST LIKELY you would have to downgrade your device first to Oreo with older security patch to unlock it (which requires more cash)
OK, if you are ready, proceed to next two threads for TWRP installations and root
=====================

/!\ TWRP installs on today standards' phones are strongly discouraged by the community. To be safe, always mod your Android device when your modding companion devices - be it a PC or a laptop, are nearby and connectable to your phone. After all, it's up to you to install the TWRP or not. /!\
=======================

> To just boot (preserve stock recovery)
• Download the TWRP image from the link provided in the OP.
• Put your phone into fastboot mode

• Download both the Magisk Manager apk and the Magisk installer zip from the link in OP. Place it into your phone's internal storage.
• Install the Magisk Manager apk (you have to install the Manager first)
