I see threads about root and custom recovery for other (old) variants, but what about the new galaxy J7 just released in the US for Metro PCS/ T-Mobile?
Unlike the old variants, this one was released with Marshmallow 6.0.1, so if I had to rely on a old rooting method, I would question if it would even work.
Is it possible to root this version of the device?
If so, how did you do it and what do I lose with root in this device?
Please post methods, thank you.
I now have this awesome phone and 8 cores wow. Can anyone confirm if the processor is 64 bit for the metro PCS version. Cpu-z reports Exynos Octa core 7580 1.5Ghz.
Thanks.

I used aida64 and yep it's a 64 bit processor. On metro website. does not say anything being 64 bit. But for the s7 it clearly states it. I was confused. The OS and kernel are in 32 bit though. I still can't get over that this phone is 8 cores lol. I am glad that Samsung decided not to use snapdragon and went with exynos. Feels more optimized.

Guys, a member by the name of paco_1 has found a way to root this variant of the Galaxy J7.
The link to their post: http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-j7/how-to/root-metro-pcs-galaxy-j7-ms-j700t1-2016-t3398939
Let me know if this method has worked for you and make sure you thank them for their hard work.
EDIT: Root Achieved - just follow directions.
Guys, its CONFIRMED.
Metro PCS variant of the J7 can be rooted.
EDIT: Looking for Root File Managers for this device (for some reason) will be hard. I tried a lot of them, but only one moved files to system partition.
Get Root Explorer by Speed Software. Right now it's worth the $3.99.
I'll wait for twrp. There is no stock rom to fall back on.

I am talking about J700H but I guess the situation is same ->
The OS is 32 bit that's right. Check "getprop | grep abi" and reveals that cpu.abilist: [armeabi-v7a, armeabi] but also cpu.abilist64 is empty, which means you can not run 64 bit binaries on device, there is no zygote64 available.
However the kernel is 64 bit. The easy way to check is "cat /proc/kallsyms" and you will see all the addresses like "0000000000000000". So?
You can not adopt temporary rooting tools (like iovyroot) easily to this device , all the code needs to be rewritten completely..
I was able to achieve root with the files/method provided by paco_1 .. Looking out for a recovery and xposed if anyone knows something I don't??? thanks.
So i guess no twrp for this phone. One thing i noticed. There is a setting in developer options "OEM Unlocking* i read that if you don't enable this setting and attempt to root. Your phone won't boot up anymore. I tried enabling it but it's asking for a pin code. Anyways, i just hope that the J7 get's a custom recovery soon.

It asked you for a pin code? What did it say exactly when you tried to enable it? I accidentally disabled developer options and because I'm rooted the FRP lock detected the custom binary and it kills the boot process before it even starts. All you have to do is Flash the stock tar then the auto root file and stock recovery and your back. I suppose the only good thing about not having a custom recovery is that you really have no choice but to dirty Flash so I retained all apps and settings in that whole process lol..

But there is no stock firmware for the metro pcs version. With that said, i finally figured the pin code. It's basically your lock screen code that you setup in the beginning. It did warned me that if i enable it. The security features will be disabled and factory reset protection will no longer be protecting my device. So i didn't enable it lol.
Sent from my SM-J700T1 using Tapatalk
Actually there is stock firmware for the T1 variant in the thread below. I've had to use it quite a bit trying to force a round peg into the square hole that is this T1 recovery situation.
As for the factory reset protection (FRP) do you really need that anyway? All that feature is good for is mildly inconveniencing the person who stole your phone

Hello Everyone,
Since our S4s use a Qualcomm Snapdragon processor, you will not be able to find games/apps that are specific to each device, such as phones that use the NVIDIA Tegra processor.
This Mod will allow you to find, buy and install games from the Play Store that normally wouldn't be available for users using a stock S4 ROM.
Also, this was not discovered by me - I just found this on some sites and thought I should share the info :silly:
Disclaimer: As always, I am not responsible for any damages this may cause to your device. Proceed at own risk.
This works by fooling the Play Store into thinking you're using a different device.
INSTRUCTIONS
Get Root Access.
. Using a program such as Root Explorer, work your way to the following folder:
Code:
[B]/system[/B]
Make sure you have Read and Write Access (do this by hitting the "Mount R/W" button at the top in Root Explorer)
Long press "build.prop" and hit "Open in Text Editor"
Locate the line where it says:
Code:
[B]ro.product.device=**********[/B]
Change whatever it says in there to 'olympus'. So you should now see:
Code:
[B]ro.product.device=olympus[/B]
Reboot phone.
You should now be able to view and download Tegra apps from the Play Store.
Remember to hit Thanks if I helped you out in anyway Cheers!
Note: Since these games are developed for Tegra devices, they may be a tad bit glitchy. However, I've tried a few games out and they seem to work perfectly fine!
UPDATE: Even though changing the build.prop will give you access to more games, Tegra Exclusive games still don't seem to be working. If I find anymore information, I will update this thread.
More build.prop devices you can use
Motorola Atrix:
Code:
[B]ro.product.device=olympus[/B]
AT&T Samsung Galaxy S3:
Code:
[B]ro.product.device=d2att[/B]
Nexus 7 Tablet:
Code:
[B]ro.product.device=grouper[/B]
Asus Transformer Pad:

No but I've flashed the pre rooted rom again and now it works again don't knowwhat went wrong... rebooted it like 10 times but didn't get it working
Maybe when you changed it it got the permissions wrong.
I used romtoolbox which has an inapp build.prop editter
Always backup tho before doing something like this, if all fail you can return to your previous state

Q&A for Galaxy Core Prime SM-G360T1 Root?
Some developers prefer that questions remain separate from their main development thread to help keep things organized. Placing your question within this thread will increase its chances of being answered by a member of the community or by the developer.
Before posting, please use the forum search and read through the discussion thread for Galaxy Core Prime SM-G360T1 Root?. If you can't find an answer, post it here, being sure to give as much information as possible (firmware version, steps to reproduce, logcat if available) so that you can get help.
Thanks for understanding and for helping to keep XDA neat and tidy!

I think that option's only there for the Samsung engineers to update the bootloader and for those who already have root unfortunately, as any changes made to the bootloader without root result in an unbootable device. :/

And yes I know the S6 has a exynos possessor and are core prime are qualcomm they are still both Linux base kernels. I would think the engineer bootloader would be unlocked so you could flash anything, not that it really matters I guess though as we'll likely never see one. I did already make an selinux permissive kernel with superuser and edited init file too that I think should've rooted the device. I even tried packing it into an ODIN file and also a flashable zip, but it doesn't let you boot into Android after flashing a custom anything from recovery or ODIN. I'm with you on the "who cares if we void the warranty" thing for sure. Guess I just wanted to make sure I could still carrier unlock it later with a tripped KNOX, as Samsung said I have to wait 90 days before I can do this. Also, I'm sure you already know that there is an official TWRP for the CORE PRIME already: https://twrp.me/devices/samsunggalaxycoreprimequalcomm.html I've been looking into how to port it though specifically for the SM-G360T1 lately, as pretty much everyone has reported it as non-functional. I figure if I can get a working custom recovery then, in theory, testing should be a breeze.
Well samsung of course gives Lil support for there low end phones no lollipop 5.1.1 source codes for any of the variants while custom recovery will be great I think without a custom kernel will cause boot loop

I hear ya. Bootloop's not really a big deal anymore though, which is good news for testing. If you get caught in a bootloop just flash my ODIN boot file...or, of course, if you were flashing a recovery when it happened, then just flash the ODIN recovery file. Works like a charm!

Ok I'm going and getting a new laptop today to being work on a metropcs stock root kernel I'm ready to trim the fat off this phone @bogarty I was reading last night and seen a guy on xda made a tmo kernel for the S5 following Aou and unibase github making changes were need be how is work on the twrp recovery going

Well I figured out why the other TWRP file isn't working for people. Looks like someone just compiled it directly from the generic source for all Core Prime phones without really making any changes. Also looks like they didn't add touch screen support, which is why you can't do anything with it. Made some changes to customize it a bit and add touch, but looks like there may be quite a bit more to be done. Have to start from scratch and work from source as the other TWRP is no good. Have to go out of town though today, so can't do it right now.

Yes. That was the first question I had too. If you haven't already after root, download SuperSU from the play store and open it at least once. Then, download a root browser and use it to go to the "/system/app" folder. Delete the entire folder in there called "SecurityLogAgent". Make sure to give the browser root permission whenever SuperSU prompts you. After that the security message will not appear.

i have the MetroPCS SM-G360t1 5.1.1 galaxy core prime
they say downloading the stock firmware for it should do the trick with odin
thing is idk if i can use the tombile frimware SM-G360t1 instead since core prime has that too, or does it HAVE to be the metropcs firmware
and i say if i can use that instead because ive been looking or hrs, since yesterday for a metropcs firmware yet no luck
but ican at least enter the phones recovery menu and i did the wipe cache and wipe datafactory reset then reboot and that doesnt work
i can at least go into download mode though

SM-G360T = Tmobile
SM-G360T1 = MetroPCS
Unfortunately I don't even own the device, and I deleted the stock boot.img from my AFH. @bogarty might have one tho. I'm with family right now and not able to pull it for you.
I do however have the stock firmware on AFH if you want a speedy download.

Yes. Just make sure you've updated to the newest firmware. In "Settings/About Device" baseband should say "G360T1UVU1AOFA". Then just go to @ShinySide's root thread and follow the instructions for root. Here is the link: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=62859013

I'm sorry to hear that. Warranty probably won't cover that. Were you paying for insurance on it by chance? It is one of the least expensive phones out there too. Maybe you could pick up another one?

I downloaded the root trapkernal from @ShinySide
and thank you so much btw for the awesome root that ive been anxiously waiting for
day by day
thanks again,
well i downloaded that but i factory reset it after but then restart it
i forgot the ome box was unchecked
so basically i turn it on and in big bold letters it says
custom binary blocked by FRP
i have the MetroPCS SM-G360t1 5.1.1 galaxy core prime
they say downloading the stock firmware for it should do the trick with odin
thing is idk if i can use the tombile frimware SM-G360t1 instead since core prime has that too, or does it HAVE to be the metropcs firmware
and i say if i can use that instead because ive been looking or hrs, since yesterday for a metropcs firmware yet no luck
but ican at least enter the phones recovery menu and i did the wipe cache and wipe datafactory reset then reboot and that doesnt work
i can at least go into download mode though

You should try downloading & reflashing the stock firmware in Odin for your specific device model. It's been known to do a true factory reset of the device, which resets the FRP. Just go to:
http://www.sammobile.com/firmwares/
Search your model number #, click on the most recent firmware in the list, download it and follow the
instructions at the bottom of the download page to flash in Odin.
Also, don't use King Root if at all possible. It's been known to cause security issues in some devices. Just Google "XDA (your device model ) root" & see if there's a better option. Good luck!
I only found a tmobile one will that work for me even tho I have a metro Pcs grand prime?

A quick guide on how to get past the FRP sync-with-the-old-account screen.
- Download and install Samsung's sidesync
- Connect your device on the same wifi network as is your computer
- Device will prompt you to use a browser - chose the default one 'Internet'
- Use the browser to download http://www.unlocksamsungonline.nl/setting.apk, to access the file go to bookmarks>history>download history>setting.apk == install and run it.
- Go to backup & recovery and choose factory reset (If it will ask you for a password, go back and go to 'Security' and setup a lockscreen password and then try again with that password)
- Wait for the reset
- You should be able to get past the sync screen now and FRP should be OFF.
Hope this helps.
I am trying to root my device for the first time (G360T1). I used the full firmware posted earlier in the thread. Then tried to use trapkernel via odin. But ev ery time I try I get a message on the screen of the phone saying "Custom binary blocked by FRP lock". Whats the work around here. I thought flashing to the earlier firmware postedx in this thread would fix it, but apparently not.
Thanks in advance.

Wow who's fault is it this time not the carriers
T-Mobile S7 Edge
Latest Update PD8
Eng Boot - System Custom
Knox 0x0
Question now is, is the new engroot method valid for the unlocked version (G935U). If so we may have a heck of a phone on our hands, easy to swap carriers and root (I know, Nexus / Nexi can do this too), sexy hardware and a hell of a camera.

I'm definitely wondering this as well. I'm grabbing the firmware that shipped with the device from SamFirm since the only web links I could find were behind rapidgator premium links, but not sure if I am feeling brave enough to try the engroot method yet.
Links for those curious: SamFirm Download
Not sure what to put in for Region Code? Look It up! For me, it was TMB for T-Mobile USA.
Use This app on your phone to check your PDA, CSC and Phone entries.
Here's what it looked like with all info entered and before hitting "Check Update". Then check the box for "Decrypt Automatically" and click "Download"

I don't know if you guys are aware of this but the G935U device uses the Snapdragon chip set instead of Exynos
which means that it cannot be rooted even if you have a S7 / S7 Edge G935U phone.
Also the G935U firmware will not flash/install properly on our Exynos G935F, it's the same idea as trying to flash
the tmobile, sprint, at&t or verizon Snapdragon firmware onto a Exynos G935F phone.
All the USA models of S7 / S7 Edge have the Snapdragon chip set which now also includes the G935U device.
Good luck,
Have a great day!

O RLY?
I know it's kind of breaking news, but that link is what munkypoo7 and I were talking about with engroot. Essentially the Snapdragon variants can use a signed Engineering boot file to acquire root. None of us were talking about the Exynos version (G935F), I'm pretty sure we were talking about SM-G935U being able to run the Engineering boot file that the other Snapdragon variants are able to run. I was just providing the steps for how to grab the stock firmware for the G935U as it doesn't seem to be publicly available yet.
So could we flash this via ODIN over the tmobile version?
I would be interested in enabling FM radio and adding EVS and video dialer from T-Mobile without loosing the bands. Can one advise which files from T-mobile to flash on this unlocked device? Thanks!
Anyone have the SM-G930U Firmware?
Use SamFirm tool for SM-G930U, Region code: TMB ?Auto)

I think so. One person indicated that they did so successfully. I am going to try it when I get some time...probably over the weekend.
Interesting.. so we don't need to buy one we can just flash the new software. That could be real cool.. I will wait for clarification

I did it on my Verizon S7 Edge today and had zero issues. It's way snappier than the Verizon firmware and battery life looks to be better (though it's only been a few hours).
The only thing to keep in mind is this firmware doesn't have *any* Verizon stuff on it, including advanced calling features (HD voice, etc.) or Verizon Visual Voicemail. Someone will probably figure out a way to shoehorn those features in, but as of right now, it's no-go. Despite that, I plan on using this firmware from now on. Being free of all the malware Verizon likes to load the phone with is very, very nice.
Why is it so impossible to root the vs987 ?? Where are those Android experts ???it's been one year and me and many people stuck on the marshmallow + locked WiFi hotspot with the unlocked Verizon G5s !! Is there a hope ?

This platform was dead before it started. Sorry to say. They can't get root with a locked bootloader. Verizon won't do it.

There are many Android experts that could unlock the bootloader Right ? Is it how it works ??? If yes that means they could unlock it ..
Sent from my VS987 using Tapatalk
My understanding, not as a programmer by any means...is that the phone needs to have an unlocked bootloader prior to even having the ability to gain root. If the service provider (Verizon) doesn't unlock this, root cannot happen in a traditional sense. Carriers such as T-Mobile have a root for this phone as they come with unlocked bootloaders. You wont see root on the Verizon variant.

no there isnt hope unless u figure it out the "experts" have tried time and time again
the bootloaders arent locked they are signed with a very special key that would take ever computer together in the worl roughly 200000 years plus to brute force into. verizon and att are the worst
now you all know. as said before if u wanted to root you should have studied before buying a "locked" device
if u want root either get a rootable device or figure it out on your own
as with the g4 there will more than likely never be root for these "locked" devices
not being an ass just the cold hard truth

they cant unlock the bootloader or it would have been done
lgs verity key prevents this through qfused motherboards highly encrypted partitions that the bootloader verifys and if one thing is off bam lg secure boot error.
which again is basicly hardcoded into the device.
no one is going to waste their time trying a 99.9% impossible feat
The phone is just not popular enough the Verizon Galaxy S7 I believe is unlocked for the bootloader. If the phone is popular enough a developer will work on it.

You need to be on marshmallow or have anti-rollback to be 0 which <1% of ppl have. Also, it's not a complete root, so although you have root permissions, it's unstable and you have no root manager (SuperSU/Magisk/etc.)
Root
