Nvidia shield controller - Shield Tablet Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

hey guys im thinking of getting the shield controller but i was wondering what you guys think of it, does it suffer with horrible dead zones like ipgea 9023 that i have, and also do you have any other suggestions for different controller for first person shooters

Buy it, it's a fantastic piece of hardware.

I got it yesterday and I've been having a blast. The quality and functions are top notch!

[Q] Two questions from a prospective TF300/700 buyer!

Hi guys! I've just sold my first generation Kindle Fire and I'm heavily considering purchasing an Asus tablet (although I am having a little bit of trouble deciding between the 300 and the 700, SO DIFFICULT), so I'm new here. Here are my two questions:
Question one: If I connect a tf300 to my 1920x1080 monitor, will it output a full 1080p resolution? If not, will the tf700?
Question two: I know that connecting PS3 or Xbox 360 controllers is quite common amongst Transformer owners and I know that I'm able to map controllers for TegraZone or Google Play games, but if I perhaps download a PS1 emulator such as FPse (I really want to replay Final Fantasy 8 ), will I still be able to map its controls to a PS3 controller so I can make it as if I were actually playing a PS1? I played with FPse on my Kindle Fire, but it was annoying having to use the touch screen as a controller.
Thank you all for your time and help
I was in the same problem, and I decided to buy TF300T, reasons:
1. Right now almost all android apps are not fully 1920x1080 capable, even some apps don't allow native 1280x800 resolution...Sure TF700 IPS+ panel is amazing...but It's too much expensive for me.
2. CPU differences are not so big between both tablets, about 0.3Ghz.
Your questions will be answered :
TV output on TF300T is 720p, enough for me. I don't know about TF700. But you can play mkv in 1080p on TF300T also.
Xbox360 and Sixaxis fully compatible (playing Onlive, Dead Trigger and others...).
I use emulators like FPse, ePSXe, N64oid, Mame4Droid Reloaded...all of them fully playable. If you have ICS, you can OC TF300T at 1.5Ghz, and you can play PS1 games with OpenGL (enhanced 3D graphics) at full speed.
For me the answer is TF300T, if you buy it you will not regret at all.
Thank you for the help! Do you use a 360 or sixaxis controller to play your emulators though? It's not buggy is it?
Had the Kindle Fire rooted and rom-ed
Ran great. Got the chance to get the TF300T and couldn't pass it up.
LOVE the Bluetooth and micro sd.
Not a hard decision

Another one coming from Kindle Fire here.
TF300 is great, but there are some downsides I felt. Weight, size and I/O jitter, although it got much better on Jelly Bean.
But KF was more practical and I could take it out on a bus or on the street easier.
I guess Nexus 7 could be a better upgrade. If I'm not mistaken, with root you can use a OTG cable to plug usb devices, and from my experience, HDMI out is not something you really use. Never used on TF300 and spent precious bucks on a MHL adapter for Galaxy Nexus and never uses it.
But if you are looking for bigger screen and dock, go for it. I love my TF300, just miss my KF because of the size.
It's like an awesome netbook which you can take the screen off.
Thanks for all your opinion guys I think I'm settling on the TF300...
I dedicated today to TF300/700 research and in the end, I couldn't justify paying around $150 more for a TF700!
Sorry for being repetitive, but does really no one know if I can map PS1 or N64 controls on my Xbox 360 controller?

That's possible You can map the buttons to the controls inside the emulator apps.

$300 Shield or $400 Asus tablet?

For $100 more you get 16gb more internal storage (apps2sd is not much help), and an amazing display with same chipset. Gamepads work fine with Android 4.1 on up. More battery life too.
If the Shield drops another $50 for the holidays, I will lean more back to Shield. Already have several tablets, so Shield would be a better device fit perhaps. Unless I sell some tablets.
I prefer Asus tablet.

Maybe not the best question since both can be done on the shield. Also the Shield most likely will still run games better due to its lower native res.
I'm guessing since the tablet will also sport the tegra 4 chipset, won't it be possible to also stream games to it the same way shield does?
pear or apple... eat what you want... they are different mate, shield is for gaming, you can't use it in portrait.. or at least not as easy any device; the tablet well, its a tablet.
I can use a controller for the tablet and it has more storage for games. Still, the Shield is more gamey of course in design.
I wish Best Buy had these or Gamestop had demos.
I have a tablet, phone and the Shield. The shield is the best portable android gaming device in my opinion. Sure it may have cost more than my other two devices but I wanted the best handheld emulator available and this is it.

It is if you play PC games. Because you can't really easily do that with a tablet. But if you don't game on PC, then just use the tablet with a controller. Me, I *love* the game streaming. I can be on the couch or in bed and play my PC games. How awesome is that?
The shield is a tablet and at the same time it isn't. If you think your going to be doing more tablet specific things that a true tablet would do better then go with the tablet, if how ever you want an android device built for gaming(which is a big difference from a tablet that was converted to play games) and would enjoy a great way to play games on a handheld divice whilst also enjoying most of the perks of a tablet, then get the Sheild.
Tablets:
Pro: Bigger screen, longer batter
Con: can be less portable, not as handy for games, can be cumbersome to handle.
Shield:
Pro: Quick and easy game play, very comfortable for long periods of times. true hardware buttons/joystick.
Con: smaller screen, not as easy to control touch based applications,
You must yield the power of the shield it is as awesome device and i replaced my tablet for just one device to rule them all.

yes, I traded in my xoom2 and 3ds to get shield. I figured in two or three years the shield will emulate 3ds games, but then ill have a shield 2 by then.

I've been seeing a suggestion of using a live wallpaper that uses gpu resources to keep your shield from downclocking after it wakes up. Haven't tried it out yet though.
That would help the throttle, but reduce battery life and not help the bleed in sleep mode.
Nvidia better be pronto on a fix.
A tablet and a shield are two completely different things. The only thing they have in common is that they both run android. I would suggest having a tablet for productivity and a shield as a gaming device.
A shield is definitely not a tablet replacement, but it can work as a great android desktop/media device if you hook it up to your monitor with a mouse in keyboard.
There is in issue with HDMI lag but Iv not tested this. Probably an update would fix it.

I have been playing with a pabndaboard es for a while and all android builds I have used on it run slow as......but when I switch to a live wallpaper it improves. Also on the pandaboard not using a live wallpaper makes android crash.

It is a tablet replacement IF you only bought the tablet for games like I did.
I have both Shield and Asus Transformer. The Shield is the most revolutionary gaming thing I've seen in a while. I would get the shield, put on some emulators, and you have access to 10,000 games in your hand
What asus tablet is it ?
I see I forgot to mention what I would buy IF i were looking to get one of these two devices. I already have the SHIELD, but I were to make this choice right NOW knowing what I know now.
I would buy the ASUS tablet, as the shield is crap, nvidia is pointing the finger at everyone other then nvidia for every shield problem out there. Have a problem with the geforce drivers needed for shield streaming? Here is nvidia's response "steam needs to fix it". Would you like to make a suggestion for some you would like to see added? Send in a bug report, we will add "new" features based on a bug report for something that is not currently in the software.
Everything works fine other then games on the shield, and the Geforce drivers for shield streaming. If you don't try and play games on the shield it works okay. If you don't install the geforce drivers for shield streaming PC games play great.

Sorry to hear about your streaming experience but the Shield is most definitely not crap. Mine streams just fine the few times I have tried it. I use it for android games and emulators. It works fantastically for this. I have owned at least 7 different Android tablets and none of them can play games like the shield can. I currently use a Nexus 10 and a Nexus 7 (2013) both of which are great tablets but cannot play games with them like the Shield. I also have a Rocketfish Miracast receiver and use it stream android games to my TV. The only problem I have with the device is screen resolution (needs to be 1080p) and screen size. I wish the size was a bit bigger but I realize they were trying to match the controller size. The resolution however, they could easily get a 5" 1080p screen. The battery life is very good and the Tegra 4 is blazing fast.

Question(s) for iPega-9023 controller Owners

How is the Dpad on this thing? http://www.amazon.com/Wireless-Blue...ller-IP117/dp/B00MUG3JPU/ref=cm_cd_al_qh_dp_i I'm really interested in playing some Dreamcast fighters and other emulators and I'd really hate to have another episode of receiving my Moga Pro for my phone just to find out it has an absolutely terrible dpad. Also, is there any noticeable input lag/delay? And does this controller actually tightly hold the tablet in place, or will it just fall flat on my face if I try to hold it upward laying down?
Actually, I found it quite good. I'm not playing fighting games on it, so I don't know how it will perform under heavy high speed usage, but playing through Chrono Trigger with it was pure pleasure.
Low latency in keyboard mode. Between 16 and 32 ms, it's 1-2 frames. Near perfect.
i cant fault it at all, nice positive response on the dpad and great for fighting games. ten times better than that circley mess on an xbox 360 controller!.
one of the best gamepads ive ever had really. and works perfect with the nvidia mapping tool .
Works great on my 2013 7 running KitKat. Can't speak for Lollipop.

can you use an ipega controller with the shield tablet for Nvidia Now? Or only the original nvidia controller works?
How is this compared to moga hero?

The Dpad on this works great and I do not perceive any lag. The controller is *incredibly tight*. You can hold the tablet upside down in it and the thing won't budge.

Yes you can, the tablet fits in it just fine, even with the smart cover on it.
I love mine I use it all the time. Mainly fps and racing games. Works very well.

Looking for a controller

I am looking for a controller for my Galaxy Tab S 10.5. I have found two that I like http://www.amazon.com/Extendable-Controller-Portable-Bluetooth-Smartphone/dp/B00OZEO576/ref=sr_1_4?s=wireless&ie=UTF8&qid=1437295563&sr=1-4&keywords=iPEGA&pebp=1437295736501&perid=1SDD60FY1CAV84ZG65KV and http://www.amazon.com/Megadream®-Co...&ie=UTF8&qid=1437295563&sr=1-2&keywords=iPEGA . What are the pros and cons on the two controllers that I mentioned? The only difference in the two that I can see, is the color of the buttons. If there are other controllers that you would recommend, keep in mind that they would have to work with a Galaxy Tab S 10.5 in landscape mode mainly, please post your feedback.
The difference is that they are made by 2 different companies
The Megadream controller is not an iPega made product despite what the deceptive discription text would try and lead you to believe.
If you absolutely positively have to have your controller "hold" your tablet while you control it then....... I guess that would be an ok choice. For a 10.5" tablet you do not have many choices to begin with.
If you want though far better quality at a fraction of the price and happens to be shaped like a controller then
Gamestop Red Samurai V2 is a far better choice. Though it is getting harder to find one.
I use the 8.4 tab s with the ipega 9023and it's awesome

How is the quality of the 9023? Is there enough tension on the sticks & buttons not to feel sloppy? I am still a little concerned about the fit in landscape mode, the Tab S is 9.75 inches length wise. Is there any other controllers beside the Gamestop Red Samurai V2 that you would recommend , it is not available online or the few stores near me. I may get a PS3 or PS4 controller down the road to play with.
Quality of the 9023 is great for the price I play on it all day at work (night guard) and I have no complaints . I can put a nexus 9 in landscape mode with plenty of extra room to stretch so no worries about width

Double post, sorry
I am thinking about one of these MOGA Pro power and IPEGA I would like to know about the quality & durability of them. I will be using them with my Tab S 10.5 & with my HTC One M8
Just bought me a mi game controller. Had some problems for the tabs to pair but once done its a great controller for 20€. I love it on Asphalt 8.

Opinion needed - Purchasing the K1 May 2016

Hi.
I hope this post does not make people mad. I just need a current perspective. Most searches on this are older.
I am thinking about buying this tablet but I am unsure. I hope this does not draw haters. I am just trying to reason it out and be a better informed buyer.
My reasons
1. Tablet seems to be out of stock. A lot.
-Does this mean truly it is being discontinued? Is there a new version on the horizon?-Is it just so good they can't keep them on the shelves?2. Should I go with the Zen 8 with 4GB of ram or other comparible? I mean for few dollars more...
3. Is the Shield K1 only good because of the Game pad mapper support for touch only games?
4. Would the Ipega controller(or similar) with touch game pad mapping be just as good?
I want a good gaming tablet and a good media tablet.
Thanks.
There's no definitive answer on the Shield X1 yet. I wouldn't bother playing that waiting game if you need a tablet now. I don't know how Nvidia handles their Shield line of products as this is my first Nvidia portable, but if it's anything like they do with their GeForce video cards, then you'd be seeing an announcement about a successor a month in advance of its release.
Supply isn't keeping up with demand right now. I was on vacation when I decided to pull the trigger on the Shield K1 because my Nook HD+ felt sluggish. I bought the Shield K1 a week before they started going out of stock everywhere last month, and even though I didn't need it immediately since I wasn't on vacation anymore, my phone died this week so I've been using the new tablet while I wait for a warranty replacement phone to be delivered. Fortuitous timing.
The biggest problem I see with the ZenPad S 8.0 Z580CA is that there doesn't seem to be a way to unlock the bootloader currently, so even though you can root it, there isn't any active development for it, and it's still stuck on Lollipop. Also, everyone seems to say it has pretty bad battery life.
As for performance, the Shield K1 will smoke the ZenPad in pretty much everything graphics-related because of the Kepler GPU. The Shield is still the best Android gaming tablet, and while its raw CPU and memory performance isn't at the top due to the SoC's age, it's still more than good enough to not be an overall system bottleneck.
I've only had two issues with the K1 so far. One is that I can't get the camera to save to external SD. This is the writing-to-exFAT issue that's apparently related to Marshmallow permissions, but I've had my LG G4 on Marshmallow since February and never had any such external SD write issues, so I don't know if it's an Nvidia-specific thing. The other issue is the hypersensitive touchscreen, which can be recalibrated in the software. I also still need to install a tempered glass screen protector, which might change the touch sensitivity as well.
I can't answer your game controller questions as I haven't started playing any games on mine yet.
For me, the SHIELD tablet is currently the best one in the market. Only problem I have had is that since the Marshmallow update, the sound over HDMI is broken (doesn't work) though the image is working perfectly fine.
1. Tablet seems to be out of stock. A lot.
-Does this mean truly it is being discontinued? Is there a new version on the horizon?
Probably no , nvidia reps are saying it is just a production rate not meeting higher demand.
-Is it just so good they can't keep them on the shelves?
Yes the price reduction gave this shield an epic boost compared to other tablets at the moment.
2. Should I go with the Zen 8 with 4GB of ram or other comparible? I mean for few dollars more...
Thats a good tab but i've seen a few hick ups in performance during a review video on youtube. besides tegra k1 is far more superior that intel soc. (you also have to consider the fact that intel soc are x86/64 architecture so there are few comparability issues in apps and games)
3. Is the Shield K1 only good because of the Game pad mapper support for touch only games?
No it is good because you are getting high end performance tablet for 200$ , it plays every game you throw at it with ease, you have all the things you need as gamer in built (console mode , twitch , 1080 screen , direct wifi controller)
4. Would the Ipega controller(or similar) with touch game pad mapping be just as good?
i dont have it so i cannot answer that.
Upcoming shield k1 successor will likely not be in same price range as the k1. It is expected to be somewhere between 300 to 400$. Shield k1 was relaunched around nov 2015 , so i highly doubt that it is at its end of cycle. In one of geforce forums a nvidia representative said they are viewing shiled k1 as a relaunch tablet and its EOL support in no way near . so you are covered to get android N for this device.
Its the best bang for buck at the moment and still keeps up with soc from this year.
Thank you all. I went ahead and ordered a K1. With 2 day shipping put it out to the middle of next week. So i did 1 day. Lol. Should be Tuesday now. Stock is still low but at least they have them. I hope it comes sooner.

You made a right choice. For gaming there truly isn't anything else comparable out there. Media wise I'm not so sure, just on the basis of the subpar screen.

Just my luck. Never fails. Just like my shield TV. Now you can get it with 2 game pads.
Anyone need something new to come out sooner. Let me know. I can just buy the old one and after i click order the announcement of the new device will soon follow. oh well. I am still looking forward to the k1.

Haha lol , im sorry but i think you can return the shield if its unopened besides i think the new tablet will probably be 100$ more. Performance might increase only 10-20% , battery size might be little less as it is said to be lil thinner.
so i think you are not losing much comparing price to performance ratio.
Nah.
I am sure it will be a keeper for a while. Thx
